- Taking old cars and making them better is a part of American culture: the hot rod. In this episode of State of Repair, Jim Belosic takes a 1981 Honda Accord and makes it electric... and very fast.

As someone that grew up in an auto salvage/recycling yard. I think it's cool what he's doing. I still haven't encountered an electric car aside from one hybrid car. Electric cars are definitely the future and I hope I have the resources to do something similar someday to learn how the new electric drive technology works.
It's not as hard as it sounds. Most of the software is available for free online, you just have to know how to make batteries and motors work together.
Electric cars have been around since the 1830s, so it’s not new tech. Pulse detonation engines are , on the other hand.

1. Plan your work, and work your plan. Be ready for failure, plan for failure.
2. Have plan B's, always at the ready.

4. If you need to, find other like minded people to help.

The whistling sound of a big turbo plus a top engine makes everything and the car looks amazing. FF also helped a lot building the image of a car that can be worked on, that can be rebuild (in the movie they buy a car, the parts and put some love into it). It can be improved by a wise guy.

So much power you can ripp the tires right off lol Does standing backflips 65 plus mph only thing i miss is the smell of the nitro burning ! awhh smell of candy lol
The anti-ev people always like to say shit like "gasoline has 100x more energy density than the best batteries!" and yet with 1/100th the energy Tesla power is fuckin smoking everything at the drag strip. An electric car absolutely destroyed the pikes-peak hillclimb record, and pretty soon they'll be smashing records at famous racetracks. All this, with "1/100th the energy density." Imagine how obscenely fast these cars will be when batteries have 1/4 or 1/2 the energy density of gasoline, let alone energy parity. Absolutely mind-boggling. The sky is the limit with electric cars, people decades ago thought we would have flying cars, I guess they'll just have to settle for inhumanly fast, silent cars that cost nearly nothing to run and almost never need mechanical service.
Cool man, you did what a lot of us wish we could do. Right on make a lot more if possible.

it's amazing, watching videos on YT about electric cars today. And seeing the lead batteries, talk of sixty mile range, and skepticism about EV's. It seems like it would be from ten years ago. Maybe five years ago. Then I look at the dates and it's two years ago. A year ago. The amount that EV's have evolved and improved in the last two years is mind boggling. It rivals the advances in smart phone technology.
Great job!!
how the f*** is this street legal?
the car is pretty old... its a loophole alot of people use especially in CA you can get an old car 30+ years and do what ever you want to it. while all the young kids are spending 30-40k on a new car then getting pulled over for loud exhaust all the real car guys are dropping in 600hp turbo charged ls engines into 240s legally.
It's a factory body with a Vin and registration papers, everything else is irrelevant so long as he's got lights, windshield, seatbelts, stuff like that. It'll obviously pass emissions.

Too fast for what he was licensed to drive.
10 second quarter mile is fast...but quite average for most comprehensive builds. You can find Honda CRX's with K20 engine swaps pulling 8.X second quarter miles here on youtube.. electric could do better, we just need more pioneers.

The fact that you made an amazing powerhouse and got kicked out because it's better than the locals makes it worth it. Like hot rod mechanics of old, the new that beats the old is progress
Nah, it's a certification thing. Apparently on many tracks, if you are going to run under a certain time (ie. hit very high speeds) you need certain certifications, and register to do so. They talk about this on Tesla Racing Channel. As far as I can tell, it's about preparation of the vehicle and driver, and insurance.

I have to laugh when he calls this a "hot rod" like back in the 50's...
The one thing you dont talk about is price to build ... you reference that this is compared to "hot rods" from back in the day your dead wrong .... this is not a teenager project or some thing you can do on the cheap side (if it was everyone would be doing this )
This for people how have alot of money and or alot of Disposable income for now ...
To build a car with this components and software you are running is Astronomical even when buying used parts ... hot rods back were cheap and easy to build this is not... so I dont consider this a "hot rod" .. more like a rich mans toy ...

Whenever I see this sentiment expressed, and you are by no means alone in your scepticism, it reminds me of this Edison quote: “After the electric light goes into general use, none but the extravagant will burn tallow candles.” What is the expensive play things for the rich, like gasoline cars in the 1920, will in a generation be the cheep everyday norm.
