There are rules to surviving a sequel! Scream 2 luckily follows these rules and becomes a damn good follow-up to the original. With a killer taking our characters for a bloody ride through the cliches and tropes of horror sequels, Sidney Prescott and friends are once again fighting for their lives while Ghostface lurks about. Is Scream 2 your favorite scary movie?

Losing Randy broke my heart. I nearly screamed at the screen in the theater when he got pulled into the van.
I actually like to try and figure out which killer killed which victim in these first two movies. Some are obvious. Others, not so much.

When I first saw Mickey's reveal in the theater, I thought, "Who?" But it makes sense you don't see him a lot in the film since he's busy doing much of the killings. You'll notice 'Debbie Salt' is sprinkled throughout the film at key moments on subsequent viewings.

LOL that first kill had waaaaaaaaaayyy too many coincidences working in favor of the killer. But the Randy kill was even worse. You're telling me Mrs. Loomis snuck into that van, and somehow got Randy in an endless open area to walk EXACTLY where she needed him, grabbed him, killed him, removed the costume, walked away in a highly public place and there were ZERO witnesses to this??? Actually one of my favorite kill scenes in the entire franchise but so ridiculously improbable.

Obviously the other sequels would've played out differently, but while I commend them having the guts to kill Randy, even if I did hate it when I first saw it, there's a part of me that wishes they had the guts to kill Dewey too, instead of him getting stabbed in the back in Scream and Scream 2, yet miraculously surviving each time.

    I'm really enjoying these reviews!
Despite the logic issues, I really enjoy the opening scene. Jada Pinkett let out a horrifying scream that's pretty memorable, and not just because Regina Hall parodied it to perfection, in Scary Movie.
Gale Weathers was at her best in this movie and Scream 4. When they reintroduced her character she started out as sincerely talking to Sidney, but quickly reverted back to her old snide, callous self from early Scream 1. Gale seeing the aftermath of Randy's death changed her (although Scream 3 screwed up her characterization). Her chase scene was great, and it looked like Courteney Cox was well prepared, with a noticeably toned body compared to the first film. She looks incredibly hot too, with her slight tan and reddish hair. Mrs Loomis was jealous.
I think killing Randy was effective, because I enjoy how they brought him back in Scream 3. Dewey should've died in this movie though. Maybe it would've been overload to the fan base, but if there's a choice between the two, it absolutely should have been Dewey. Having him survive again was kind of lame, after looking back at the series.
The movie does a better job of hiding the killers, but there comes a point in time where Mickey just stops appearing, and I don't think he ever had a one on one moment with Sidney. That's not too alarming, but it's noticeable compared to Derek. I guess the same logic could be applied to Cotton though.
I really like how, until act 3, the movie kept Debbie away from Sidney, the one person who could identify her. And, her motive is very clear and well established. Mickey's too, and he was a more calculated, forward-thinking version of Stu.
Overall, I think Scream 2 is still good, but could be a bit shorter. Maybe more intense kills, like Olivia's death in Scream 4. I wouldn't expect them to go all out though, like Casey in Scream 1.

    • @ericmichaud1273
      @ericmichaud1273 Před 4 lety

J Par J Par I completely agree. I would never put this movie above the first, but it’s a legitimately solid movie overall, it’s the only Scream sequel that I can say that about.
I was actually very disappointed Mickey wasn’t in the movie much, I wanted to see more of his character and he was great in the finale. In the first movie in nearly every scene Stu or Billy is in there is some sort of clue that you can actually notice upon rewatch. Not with Mickey though. I understand why Cody dislikes that it was “more obvious” in the first movie, but I actually think that made it’s twist a lot more clever.
I dislike the fact that they killed Randy, but it was a solid death scene. I didn’t like the tape in Scream 3 though, to me that was just another half-baked idea that movie loved to keep throwing out.
My personal problem with Scream 2 is that I didn’t really think Gale or Dewey had much of a place in this story. I would’ve preferred to get to know some of Sidney and Randy’s college friends, instead of going through basically the same love story we saw in the first movie (only to repeat it AGAIN in 3).

I saw Scream 2 in the theater in 1997 and my theater was the same mad house as the film's opening scene theater. There were actually people in costume running around during the opening and tons of rowdy people yelling at the screen. I do not think that the studio had them as plants, since who would care about a little, local theater in West Palm Beach, Florida, right? It actually was surreal seeing such a crazy theater scene almost mirroring our own, since there were not people killed at my showings, but it freaked me out completely.

You know I was thinking about the new upcoming Halloween movie which ignores all the sequels after the original Halloween and the sequel takes place in present time, I really think that they should make a Scream movie with the same basic concept making a movie that ignores 2,3, and 4, and the sequel takes place in present time and they could fix their mistakes and the new sequel could have Sidney returning back to Woodsboro and reuniting with the survivors of the original Woodsboro murders, Gail, Dewey, and Randy. But then the killings start happening again and it brings up memories of the night in 96 and together the 4 must stop Ghostface. And throughout the movie Sidney and Randy work on their relationship with each other and in this movie Randy gets the girl 😉

It's an opinion whether movies like Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, The Godfather Part 2, etc. are better than the original. What bothers me is his Aliens line. Good review! My Phantom Menace cinema experience was similar to the Scream 2 opening, though a little less crazy once the movie started. My scream 2 cinema experience was also slightly similar in that there were multiple people wearing Ghostface masks, while watching a movie where characters are wearing Ghostface masks in a cinema while watching a movie where a character wears a Ghostface mask (Stab) lol. It was hilarious and awesome!
Good point about the gore. Scream isn't very gory, but we do get those two shots of people gutted with intestines hanging out, and we get that headshot at the end. Scream has more blood, but not necessarily more gore. The cop with the pole through the head is kind of the equivalent to Casey's hanging gutted body and Steve's gutted body. The rest of the kills are similar to the original, there's just more of them and a little more blood.
I agree about the death in the bathroom stall though. It's well done but makes absolutely no sense at all. Even when I was 15 and watching this for the first time, my reaction was WTF due to how nonsensical it was, and implausible. The cheapest bathroom stalls are super strong and you aren't going to be able to stab a knife though them, and does Mickey have psychic powers to be able to tell when someone's head is on the other side of the wall?? Kevin Williamson and Wes should have thought up a more creative kill, because Maureen's death was well done and clever.

I had to pause for a second to give my take on what you said about how the humor sort of vanishes when Randy gets killed off. I think that was the point, or at least that's what I took from it. It's sort of like the movie is saying, "ok we've had our fun. We made you laugh. But now it's time to get serious." Or maybe like a "ok, did you forget this is a horror movie? Do we have your attention now?" While I admit at first viewing (I was 10) seeing my favorite character get killed off sucked. But as an adult, I've come to really understand and appreciate that choice. Something had to happen to re direct the tone of the movie.

Nice take on the film, I saw both in the theater and totally forgot that there was only a year between releases. Scream is and will always be my favorite of the series but part 2 is very good. Now as for part 3 you can take as long as you want to review it (looped in Hell as Drumdums says) , skip to 4 it's at least better. Keep it interesting and looking forward to the big October ranking!!

I have been to a movie premier like the one in the opening of "Stab" for Scream 2- I caught the premier of Zombieland at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood way back when. There was a zombie walk ahead of the showtime and people all came in costume and just tore up every bar, restaurant, and storefront by the theater that day like a true zombie apocalypse. Then stumbled through people's tables, knocked over pitchers of beer, crawled over parked cars and traffic was totally stopped. The cops were called. I thought the show was gonna be cancelled. But the show MUST go on, and so it did. The theater was wild, the crowd was everywhere, and THEN when the film actually brings the characters TO that same historic theater IN FILM! It was just chaos.
Such a blast and the right kinda movie for a crowd like that.
So it does happen. But not too often.

The implausible movie opening here is something I've come to recognize as "theatricalism" in film; example given: at the beginning of the original Halloween '78, the camera focuses on Michael Myers as a child just standing there, then the camera floats away as the parents stare at him from the left and the right. In Scream II, she's on stage in a moment of theatricality in the much the same essence...so indeed it's pointed and noticeable, and I think it's a trick in the bag that film-makers apply at times. Of course the haywire movie theater people are ridiculous...overall, it could be a part of an intended theatricality. GREAT CHANNEL - SIMPLY THE BEST!

Awesome review. Did you see the original killers were leaked and there was a last minute rewrite for the ending? Interesting alternate but seems like way too many killers. Also I thought Randy’s getting pulled in the van was way worse than the bathroom kill. What are the odds he’d end up there, at least in the bathroom scene Omar Epps was drinking soda

ERRR It was Billy. First you hear his voice and second you see his boots. I believe you can compare his boots to him or Ghostfsce in other scenes.
I just f-cking realized all 3 of the original s had the killer in the bathroom scene. Angelina was supposed to be the second killer in 3, but no one really would've wanted it. Roman or as Sarah Darling called him, "Ronan" was bad enough.

I'll be embarrassingly honest. I actually liked Scream 3 the most. I do hope they eventually go beyond 4 and try for a fifth movie someday, though. I sometimes wonder though if Neve Campbell's character should have bowed out of Scream 4 though (without getting killed) and maybe the girl that Lucy Hale had a bit role in the beginning of the movie with could have stepped up as the new heroine/final girl. I think she could have had the looks and charisma to pull it off, for a new trilogy of Scream movies, 4 through 6.

I’m just glad to see someone finally posting that they don’t hate Scream 3 lol. Scream 2 has always been my least favorite of the franchise. Scream 3 had a different writer so I could tell some of the differences in the dialogue. I wasn’t crazy about the multi-voice box and the comedy was a little over the top but I still enjoyed the movie. My best to least are: Scream, Scream 4, Scream 3, Scream 2. 😊

Scream 2's original script leaked on the internet. They had to rewrite it. If I'm not mistaken, I believe that Derek and Hallie were originally going to be the killers, Joel the Camera Man was a student at the school and Randy was working for Gale as her camera man.

The opening scene logic bugs the hell out of me too. What are the chances the characters are called Maureen and Stephens and that they are together ( for the copycat idea)? How did he know the guy would be going to the toilet and that two ghost faces would be using the urinal forcing him into a cubical? How did he know where to stab on the wall to hit his head? How did he know the cinema would be full of idiots cheering and screaming to mask his second kill? I like this movie but the opening sucks.

Concerning the opening scene, I agree there are logical issues there but the cleverness makes me not give a shit just like Tatums iconic garage door death. I can not justify how the killer would KNOW which bathroom Omar would go in but I can assume that since the killer was locked in the only other stall in the bathroom, he knew Omar would choose the other one next to it. And the only excuse I have for the killer knowing where his head was is maybe the killer offscreen looked over the stall while Omar’s Head was planted on the other side and BAM! Stab! Now as for the wild and crazy kids in the theater scene, I’ve been to college campus movies in the last 10 years that have rowdy kids acting stupid and drunk and also I’ve been to some good area theaters where the movie was boring so the audience started turning it into a party lol I guess the ushers weren’t getting paid enough to give a fuck. Lol So I totally by that opening scene. It just doesn’t happen often.

Nice video, haven't watched your first Scream one yet, but do you think you could do a video on who think is the killer in each Scream? As in, who was the one under the mask in that scene? I think it could be a cool discussion video. For example, in this film I think that despite Ms. Loomis clearly being the one who killed Randy, to me Mickey had to be in the van with her. Mickey's camera caught it on film, the killer just manhandled Randy, and you clearly see a man's figure leave at the end. I think that was Mickey while Ms. Loomis left the back of the van. She killed Randy, but Mickey was in there too and is who pulled him in and threw him around, (and recorded it).
