Halloween II (1981) - Movie Review

  • The night he came home continues in Rick Rosenthal's Halloween II. With Laurie Strode helplessly recovering in a hospital, Michael Myers continues his killing spree in pursuit of finishing what he started. A sequel that continues a classic while taking numerous cues from another slasher franchise, Halloween II is a fan favorite of the franchise. But is it a favorite of mine?

    My favorite film in the franchise. One theory that someone brought up one time that might make the robotic myers make sense: At the end of the first, Michael got stabbed in the neck, the torso, the eye, was shot 6 times and fell off a balcony. Perhaps the human aspect of Michael died at the end of H1 and only the pure evil remains in H2. The evil is now THE ONLY thing keeping Michael alive. I imagine he would walk like a zombie after taking such a beating in the first film.

    Personally, I think it would have made more sense and been more interesting to have Michael pursue Laurie in this just because she survived. Up to that point, she had been the only one of his victims to survive him. I think it would be reasonable to think that someone so obsessed with killing as Michael would become obsessed with the one woman he couldn’t kill and become obsessed with her. No sibling connection required.

    I've always been fine with the brother and sister connection. To me, it almost makes Myers seem more evil in a sense because he doesn't want to kill his sister because she did something to him - he wants to kill her just BECAUSE she's his sister, almost as though he despises the fact he has a familial bond with anyone. Whereas most brothers would go out of their way to protect their siblings, especially sisters, Myers goes out of his way to kill them. I also don't think it takes away from the fact that Michael just likes to kill in general because of all the other people he killed that he didn't have to to get to Laurie. To me, this just explains why, even in the first one, he seems to have a particular goal in killing Laurie, not that he doesn't want to kill others, too.

    • @saiyan970
      @saiyan970 Před 5 lety +23

      His goal wasn't to kill Laurie In the original 1978 movie, Myers saw Laurie by chance when she dropped of the keys for her father plain and simple, he wasn't there waiting for her and he certainly didn't know she would show up, he set is sight on her and followed her, once she met up with annie and lynda he set his sight on them too. Everything was random.

    • @gnc623
      @gnc623 Před 5 lety +13

      @Universe7Gaming Maybe I'm projecting the second film on to the first a little, but to me, it always seemed like he had a particular determination to kill Laurie, even in just the first film, at least just from my point of view. I mean, I can't really argue the original intent as Carpenter has clearly stated it was all originally random, but I guess the connection has just never bothered me. I thought it fit nicely, but some don't, which is fine.

    • @gnc623
      @gnc623 Před 5 lety +13

      @Stone Gasman, For me it wasn't the connection that ruined the franchise, but the fact that there WAS a franchise. I actually think the Michael Myers story should have stopped after II and that they should have pursued Carpenter's original idea of wanting to make a new Halloween movie every year about a different story.

    • @gnc623
      @gnc623 Před 5 lety +11

      To be honest, I was surprised when I found out that Carpenter actually wasn't too fond of the idea of the brother and sister angle and that it was originally supposed to be totally random. (Not shocked surprised, but just like, "Oh really? Huh.") Just because I thought it flowed together so well. Maybe I'm just seeing things a little differently or didn't see what some did, but that bit was actually a surprise to me. Maybe it's because I never saw it that way that I'm not bothered by the sibling connection.

    • @klasicktha1
      @klasicktha1 Před 5 lety +4

      Ehh the brother and sister angle was one of the worst things to happen to the series. Halloween 2 could've been fine without it. It didn't need that at all because all the motivation was there so to speak....Loomis popped his has in the chest 6 times or whatever to stop him from killing Laurie and he wanted revenge 🤷🏿‍♂️simple

  • @ganthc
    @ganthc Před 5 lety +4

    I love H2. The brother sister angle made sense because he murdered his older sister, and shows why he came home. Otherwise why go home? Why not just have him go to Chicago and kill with impunity? Also, it’s hard to call the horror elements in this film cliche when this was still one of the first slasher films. Loomis’ side story was him trying to find Michael. The school thing was cheesy, but I was fine with the reveal of the sibling connection. And Laurie wasn’t totally clueless, since she was recalling childhood memories of visiting Michael in the mental ward. And the ending with the Mr. Sandman song and the flames is perfect. I remember having nightmares about this movie, how terrified I was during the whole movie, because you feel as helpless as Laurie in trying to get away from Myers. Such a great movie, and a great sequel to the original. The soundtrack was awesome with the 80s synth, and the forced perspectives that were used to build tension. Loved this movie!

    The brother / sister storyline is kind of a juxtaposition for me. If he’s just a dark evil killer, why does he keep pursuing her? She got away? So what, many other human beings to dispatch from the earth. That to me would be the mindset of someone who just wants to kill. He can’t just be OCD so he has to get her, there HAS to be a motivation to keep pursuing her. Otherwise he could’ve just got up from absorbing Loomis’ rounds and found another teenage party to brutalize.

Dick is an amazing Shape, imao the zombie walk etc could come from all those injuries limitations during the movies, and maybe lack of masks and need to wear what he finds! I don't have any problem with the sister thing, and Jamie Lee Curtis played ok for what she had in this one! It always scares me the idea of someone just not stopping to come after you, no matter what and the burning Michael is one of my favourites moments ever in a horror movie! It's definetly more creepy, but maybe not as enjoyable as the 1st movie, but i think it's the kind of movies were the flaws can be seen as plot-ideas and are working very well!

    In my honest opinion it's the second best in the Franchise after the Original. You can actually end the Halloween Franchise here because *Spoilers* Michael Myers and Dr. Loomis both die at the end of the Movie (Yes, I know that it was late retconned in H4 and H20 but if you pretend that those Movies don't exist, you pretty much assume that those two died). No more Sequels!

It’s a good sequel, but if you’re able to get your hands on the 2-Disc Shout Factory blu ray, GET IT. The 2nd disc has the extended TV version that tones down the “Friday” gore/kill factor and snail-paced scenes of the theatrical version and adds more scenes of Laurie Strode and some of the other characters. It’s more character-driven and much better paced and constructed in the narrative. It’s my overall favorite cut of Halloween II. 🎃 Great job, Cody!

    I’m watching the Halloween series for the first time with you, so loving these reviews as a follow up and agree with you on most things!! I agree with lack of character development in this and lack of Laurie. But my biggest issue was the way Laurie acted as a final girl. Jamie Lee Curtis has a status as THE Final Girl. And while I loved her last quarter in the first movie and think that status comes from the first movie being the trendsetter for slasher movies, I’m still yet to see her really FIGHT as a final girl. She spent the majority of this movie out of the picture and then when she was confronting him she was crying/screaming/running away instead of actually doing what we all love and root for - acting like a tough a** heroine. I am an avid Scream fan, so maybe I just have high expectations of a final girl due to Sidney Prescott being so kickass in the series. But I really hope Laurie steps up for the sequels as at the moment that’s the main thing that has let me down coming into this franchise with new eyes and high hopes.
    Side note - don’t have much of an opinion about the bro/sis storyline yet so slightly interested to see where it goes, but agree it could have been taken out of this as I loved the lack of motive in the first.

    Good review Cody but can't fully agree with all your complaints, I agree not seeing Laurie's reaction to finding out Michael was her brother was a missed opportunity but where in the film could you find time to put a scene like that in, it's a tricky area! Saying that Laurie picked a car that would not start is not true Michael went outside and damaged the gas tanks on every car and flattened the tires to make sure no one would leave and some have argued why didn't Laurie head towards town but she had a cracked ankle and she probably ran out of adrenaline so she had to rest and she hid in a car! I do agree character development needed some work and some scenes from the TV version do improve on this and if some of these scenes where put back in the movie it would make the movie stronger!

    It's the best sequel for me personally I'm one of those who watches Halloween and this film back to back it's a great double feature. The first one is a classic and is an all around better film, but there's parts of Halloween 2 that I look forward to seeing after watching the first film. The mask is the same from the first film, and while looking somewhat different is the last time the mask looked anything like the one from the first film. I actually like that Halloween 2 is more violent, but I never felt it was overdone.
    My biggest issue with this film is how little Laurie is utilized in the sequel, and considering the revelations she should have been more involved throughout. I'm mixed on the choice to make Laurie and Micheal siblings. On one hand it gives him motivation for stalking Laurie, and why he possibly comes home in the first place, on the other hand it ruins the mystery, and the execution of this revelation isn't handled all that well, and does make the rest of the sequels contrived/goofy.
    I still feel as a plot twist it works well enough if this was meant to be the last film, but obviously that isn't the case. Other than that I really enjoy everything else about Halloween 2, any other issues I have are more nitpicks. Halloween 2 is the only sequel I really like, and is the only one that felt like it had any reason to exist. H20 has it's fans, and I guess it makes a decent trilogy, but that film doesn't really do anything for me personally, it's just alright I watch it occasionally, but I don't have much feelings towards it one way or another.

    I've been into creepy movies and tv shows ever since I was a young child. My love for the tv show, _Goosebumps,_ led to my first adult horror film franchise, _Halloween._ Those movies _terrified_ me as an 11/12-year-old but I was an immediate fan because of the thrill of the suspense and the thought that Michael Myers could be right behind you, and you wouldn't even know it until it's too late. I can still remember how I felt, seeing them for the first time, and the escape it provided me by indulging in something that kept me on the edge of my seat.
    Those movies will never get old. I play them every single October, particularly _Halloween I, II, & H20._
    That, IMO, is the perfect trilogy/trifecta.

I think the original Halloween was better but Halloween 2 was okay. I agree, usually I'm okay at Hospitals at night but this felt creepy. I was thinking "where is the staff?" There KIND of is a realization scene, to me st least it could be viewed at differently. After Jimmy tells Laurie that it was Michael Myers that was after her she has the flashbacks of Mrs Stroode telling her shes not her mother and of herself visiting Michael in Smiths Grove, then thats when she then goes into shock. I always took that as Laurie realizing Michael was her brother.

    • @AFellowCyberman
      @AFellowCyberman Před 4 lety +3

      I think her going into shock was faking. She knew Michael was there looking for her so she faked being comatose so she could escape when the staff weren’t looking, so Michael wouldn’t find her.

And that scene where they're all at the school and saw that Michael wrote "Samhain" on the wall always bothered me since I was a little kid when I first saw it. Why did Michael even stop by that school in the first place? It just seemed a little out of character. Still a good sequel, but the flaws definitely become more apparent as i watch it more.

Dr. Loomis was chasing ghosts n finally shows at the hospital with 5 minutes left in the movie. The turn Laurie Strode into a scared victim where in one she showed courage. The third is it was so obvious that that wasn't the same Michael other wise i really enjoyed two.

    I Just realised something. You know how we never get to see Laurie actually find out that she's his sister. Well, maybe we do and we Just didn't know it.. Remember that weird dream sequence where she remembers her adoptive mother saying: "I'm not your mother." And young Michael in the hospital. And that all comes after she's told by Jimmy that Michael is the one who attacked her and ponders why he targeted her.
    Well it might be that the dream sequence was a visual way of showing that she's figuring it out by herself. She never gets it variated and confirmed by anyone but she's sort of figured it out.
    You could still argue it's not done very well and we still never get a real reaction from her.
    But I *think* that's what the scene is about. I think the idea is that she worked it out on her own. And when someone does eventually confirm it to her verbally, she won't be surprised.
    When you consider the kind of thought processes.. She knows she's adopted but her parents won't tell her anything about where she came from or about her biological parents.
    She finds it weird.
    Then she finds out that the guy who Just attacked her and keeps coming after her, is the kid who killed his sister.
    Yeah it's far fetched and would make more sense if she had a little more to go on, in order to figure it out.
    But that's my take on it.
