Kabru's observation is just that the siblings (or at the very least Laios; if he knows anything else about Falin besides that she went to Magic School, he hasn't said anything about it so far) are bad at dealing with people. Laios gave his money to obvious scam artists for an absurd amount of time because he's so bad at reading other people he cannot detect obvious scam artists. The assertion Kabru's making is that someone who is so bad at reading people is likely that way because they are not *interested* in reading people-- and he basis this assertion on his own personal experience, as a person who pays attention to the tiniest fragments of information about human relations because he's sincerely interested in it. Furthermore, he thinks anyone without the skill to navigate people like that shouldn't become king, presumably because he highly values those skills.
Whether or not that's a fair assessment is to be seen, but from the audience side there's something to that-- Laios *is* in fact bad at reading the room, conveying himself to others, and understanding what other people are thinking and feeling, and conversely we've only really seen him interested in monsters. He's already suggested he leans on his sister to help him in social situations, and interestingly Falin herself came across as the eccentric individualist when we see her flashbacks to school-- Marcille was her only friend, after all.
Interestingly, this also works in reverse-- Kabru is so used to humans that when he was staring down a sea-serpent, in his head he was obsessed with finding the "carotid artery". Attacking the carotid artery is obviously an easy way to drop a human, but it doesn't make any sense to think about a snake in those terms. He is so obsessed with humanity that monsters confuse him.

Short version: He thinks Laios would be a terrible leader and therefore cannot be trusted with the power you'd gain from conquering the dungeon. This is not a moral judgement, but a pragmatic one.

When I read this chapter I thought he was close to the truth but was constantly missing it because he was making assumptions about Laios and Falin, mainly because he hasn't actually talked to them and does not know them. He comes to a bunch of conclusions that might seem reasonable to others but only because he's constantly looking at it from the outside and hence he ends up missing vital details.

    • @raymondthrone7197
      @raymondthrone7197 Před 3 měsíci +58

@@Regenmacher175 He's off on a couple specific details (he thinks they've resorted to banditry for example and hasn't even considered that they're cooking monsters) but on the whole I'd say he's shockingly accurate for someone who hasn't met the party in person. His analysis of Laios' character is pretty harsh, but honestly far more incisive than basically anyone else in the story: he has (correctly) diagnosed that it isn't that Laios is stupid, he just does not care enough to worry about interpersonal context, social dynamics, or really anything in the world outside his bubble. And all that without even talking to him in person!
Of course, the unsaid addendum is that Kabru himself is so laser-focused on those very things that he himself has become rather warped.

kabru's beef with the siblings (mostly laios tbh) is that they're kind of bad judges of characters that ended up unknowingly enabling criminals. the manga explained it alot better than here imo. i think this scene in the manga originally had some additional throwaway comedic examples of the toudens unwittingly getting themselves into situations, that make kabru's dislike seem less unfounded. hoping those scenes werent cut for time and im just misremembering when they appear

I think what came across to me whan I read this chapter is that Kabru is making a bunch of assumptions and acting upon them when it comes to Laios and Falin because he does not know them and has not talked to them. While Laios is not great at social interactions and not good at reading people, saying "they are not saints" sounds like Kabru is somehow waiting to disprove some kind of public perception because he ascribes bad motives to the Touden siblings...while he himself just killed a bunch of people and dumped their bodies in the water where they can't be found. He seems like the kind of person who likes to give a bunch of speeches about how important it is to be moral whilst exempting himself from those very same obligations when it suits him.

He is not wrong, both twins have no interest in humans due to their past in the village because of how they discriminated against Falin. The sister for her part, having her connection with the spiritual, also became detached from humans. They are indifferent to people but have a fascination for monsters, which is why Laois focuses on wanting to learn everything about them: their history, their anatomy, their behavior, even their taste; This interest in monsters is what makes him very good at fighting them.
Kabru is his total opposite, the antitheis of Laios, he is expert in fighting humans and putting together strategies against them to reduce or kill them, but he has no talent for fighting monsters. He is very analytical and pays a lot of attention to people and observes and predicts their behavior very well. Due to his past, he hates monsters and dungeons. He also has his sights set on conquering the dungeon and breaking the curse (something that Laios never gave importance to, until the Orcs made him reflect).

In the manga (omitted in the anime), right before their parties got killed by fishmen in episode 7 (and got revived in this episode), there was a scene where she was shown sulking and annoyed when Kabru was staring at the mermaids. We couldn't hear her grumbling as both her and Kabru was wearing earplugs to protect them from the mermaid's voice, but Kabru then teased her by saying that though he couldn't hear her he assumed she's saying something along "hey, look at me, not the mermaids😅

This is one of the series where I actually am anime only so I can talk about my thoughts without worrying about spoilers! Huzzah!
I agree that Kabru definitely seems like a foil of Laois.
Laois has an almost uncanny understanding of monsters while Kabru is amazing with people. And vice versa for their weakness.
Kabru is obsessed with being the one to take down the dungeon (seems to think it’s his destiny). Meanwhile Laois never really thought about it before (orc episode).
As a leader, Kabru command’s respect from his party but seems to fail often, while Laois gets constant (deserved) disrespect but is surprisingly effective.
On his comment on not liking the siblings, it does seem strange to me how he worded it. Only two things I can think of would be he either thinks they are knowingly funding smugglers or they are dumb and being taken advantage of.

Kaburu is so fucking cool?? not that I value people based on their strength, but he seemed kind of.. in the most polite way possible; pathetic the last times we saw him. suddenly however, he fuckin' brings out the most interesting possible personality, an innocent, pure-seeming self that slips into a 'killing machine' mode on a dime if necessary, concerned with morality, but not idealistic. he carries an aura to me, a powerful charisma. despite the Griffith vibes I got from him this episode, I feel like he's to be trusted.
I also appreciate the justice in ones soul it requires to kill those scumbags and dump them in the water, like, there's no way leeches like that deserve to live, let alone be revived. tata~!

Well, I personally don't think him ended up dead two times is pathetic. First, with the treasure bugs, even Laios Party, a party who has a monster study expert as their leader, almost ended up falling to the same trap if not for the sword warning them about the lurking danger. So them getting obliterated is understandable.
Regarding his second death, the anime cut the entirety of the flashback why he and his party ended up dead again. In the manga, they were all wearing earplugs to avoid getting enchanted by the mermaid's sound. Both him and Rin were on the front leading the way (yea now that i think again this is stupid) and by the time they looked back, their entire party already getting drowned and killed one by one leaving the two all alone facing a flock of mermen. Despite ended up dead, at least the two are successful enough to chase the mermen away (even killing some of them) so that their dead bodies could float, discovered by others, and be revived again. If they were eaten or submerged under the water, it would be impossible to revive them again😅

When he says he wants to expose Laios and his sister for who they really are and that they're not saints I get the feeling he had something against them based on nothing other than the scenario he built up in his own head. Yeah the people who Laios gave his money to ended up being crooks but to never even talk to Laios in person and to then assume he's a scam artist is a bit much don't you think? We know Laios is bad at reading people and relies on Falin for social interactions occasionally but that's something Kabru could have easily discovered himself had he even once talked to the guy and it might have impacted how he sees Laios here. A thing I definitely don't like is Kabru's self-righteousness when he just killed a bunch of people and dumped their bodies in the water where they will NEVER be found and revived. Sidenote, there is some coloring errors in this that make a difference... The gnome in the party, at times the food he's eating is colored as meat, but it should be bread. This is important because he's vegetarian for religious reasons.
(No, this never really comes up in the story, but the author wrote those sorts of details for every character.)

Kabru confuses Laios' poor ability to interact with people with disinterest, since he was easily scammed, he thinks that the brothers are not interested in dealing with people, but really they are both bad at interacting, Falin had few friends and Laios He doesn't read people well, he only thinks about his own things. He doesn't think Laios is a good king, although he is not entirely right, perhaps he is not wrong about something.

Fun fact: The girl with the feathers is based on the myth of the Crane Wife. An abridged version is that a man saves a crane and later a beautiful woman appears and asks to marry him. After he gets married his wife asks for privacy to spin silk. The silk she makes is beautiful and valuable but she grows weaker and sicker and he worries and peeks on her spinning to see her turn into a crane and pluck out her feathers and turn them into silk. The crane then explains she the same crane he saved and she wanted to repay him but now he's discovered her true form she cannot stay.

The thing about Kabru is that he's very good at reading people and putting things together; so good that he doesn't stop to consider that he might be wrong. He's already convinced that Laios and Falin are either gullible fools who are too easily taken advantage of, OR they're just putting on an act and have some kind of ulterior motive, and he's so committed to it being one of these two things that he never considers anything else. He and Laios are, in my opinion, complimentary freaks. Laios's "dark side" comes from him just being... for the most part genuinely unaware that the things he's saying/doing are messed up or weird. Meanwhile Kabru's "dark side" is deliberate and purposeful, and only really exacerbated by being in a party that doesn't seem to call him out when he's being creepy. I cannot wait until they end up in the same room together.

I think Kabru is actually pretty on the money about Laios being kinda indifferent towards people, I mean we meet him literally spacing out in the middle of a Dragon fight when his sister gets eaten, he is absolutely detached thinking about food.
The problem is how does Kabru come to that realization with the knowledge that he has? Maybe he could tell that Laios didn't really care whether people he helped needed the gold or where just exploiting him (witch I suspect is true, he wouldn't care about that), but this whole reasoning from the story to his conclusion is missing. Maybe a translation thing tho.
I also think you could just pull up some dialogue that you want to discuss and not try to remember what it was. Obviously you probably see that again in editing, but we won't see your thoughts)

I think it's interesting because it's not a question of what makes a good person, but rather what makes a good king? If defeating the dungeon gets you a kingdom, what kind of person would you want to get that crown? Laios is hyperfixated on monsters and monster ecology, he doesn't know how to read people, he got scammed, so in Kabru's eyes, someone who is VERY interested in reading people, Laios would make a horrible king. And the thing is, he's not entirely wrong. Being kind and altruistic is great and all, but you also have to be sharp and crafty to be a king and you need to be able to show and project strength when necessary.

You've watched 13 episodes already and still manage to not understand..
Laios has been giving money to those people as a matter of habit. He might have cared a bit at the start, but he was INDIFFERENT, i.e. he wasn't interested in what was happening. They kept scamming him and used the money for nefarious deeds and he never gave a fuck because, AS PER HIS ADMISSION, humans are boring.
Laios didn't even recognize Kabru's body just a couple days after finding him the first time, but he recognized the kobold. He doesn't care much for society, he doesn't care to understand people, except for those few in his party (and even then, he never understood Shuro liking his sister even though it was obvious to everyone, EVEN KABRU who wasn't a party member).

  • @BumbleBee-ur4uo

I personally hate kabru, and I think that's he's a serial killer and a psychopath.
And i have a feeling that due to what he said later, even tho at first, he just said that he was going to report them, he was planning to kill them when they turned their backs.
I've seen some comments saying that the theifs deserved to die (and for that, i say, "You're a psychopath too"), those theif didn't just get killed, due to the dungeon's magic, their souls will never leave the dungeon.
And from what I've learned and experienced in psychology, when he says that he can't wait for the main character's team to show their throw faces, he believes that they are hiding their true selfs, because he's not a good person and is hiding his true self and intentions, and it subconsciously causes him to believe that anyone else who is good and does nice things is also hiding their true selfs and intentions.
He also has a dictator'ish/communist'ish mindset, in the way that he would gladly kill or do worse things (like the scam artists) to anyone who does anything that goes against his moral compas when he knows that there won't be any lawful consequences for it.
And I think that this episode with Kabru is one of the biggest reasons that killed my desire to continue reading and watching delicious in dungeon, kabru and his team are not the first characters in this show who the story tries to make them look good even tho they are uttely evil (mainly the orcs).
And the way the team talked and what they said after they killed the theifs and dumbing the bodies in the lake "imprisoning their souls in the dungeon" (which i also believe was done to hide evidence and cover for the crime they've just done (which is much much worse than just pety scamming) so that the theifs wouldn't to the authorities about what happened), was very triggering for me, because many times in my life, people wronged me very badly, and then a bit later i would slightly eavesdrop on them and they would would smug talking like that and talk about me in an insulting manner.
"For anyone who feels like me or shares a similar opinion.
    You're not alone".
