    Kabru is the exact mirror image to Laios. He is an expert in everything human - both psychology and anatomy - and can easily manipulate or kill anyone he runs across. But he knows nothing about monsters and keeps wiping his party in the dungeon because of that; he keeps trying to apply his knowledge and skills against humans towards monsters, and they just don't work here.
    Laios is the exact opposite.

    • @EinManU
      @EinManU Před 2 měsíci +20

      yea - i realized that when he was talking to his party after the sea serpent fight - and the fact hes trying to use his knowledge on humans not for personal gain but for the good of the whole while being an extreme realist makes him very interesting imo
      Yes, he is deceiving people, but not really of ill will - hes always doing whats most beneficial to his party and to someday clear the dungeon. Or atleast thats what i got out of it, i dont know whats gonna happen later in the manga.

    laios' and shuro's fight was so important to me as a neurodivergent person... the fact that laios cant understand social cues or "read the room" and having that genuinely hinder his relationships and not just have it be a gag is so real

    • @itsquestionhere

      yes!!!! laois being autistic is so important to me, because even comedic moments about his special interest or smth aren’t like . malicious it’s just “wow he’s really into monsters” and not only that, his knowledge of monsters is the driving force in there entire quest to get falin back, he knew all about dragons sleep/digestion which gave them hope and set them off eating monsters which led to them meeting senshi etc etc, his enthusiasm is the reason they’re all this determined and have gotten this far, without it being a constant “lol look what an insane freak he is . i guess hes helpful sometimes everybody point and laugh”

      @whiskeredwolf4861 Před 2 měsíci +43

      I really appreciate that Laios is actually angry, too. A lot of the time the neurodivergent character will just be sad, since the writers want them to be sympathetic. Sometimes they’re even made to apologize. But here, Laios straight up decks Shuro in the face. He’s upset and hurt and probably doubting a lot of things now. It feels so much more real. Laios is portrayed like he’s being very reasonable, too.
      (Major spoilers below)
      This moment (and a lot of others) is seriously amazing in hindsight. It’s moments like this that makes his talk with the Winged Lion so understandable. You *understand* how frustrated and angry he is because a lot of the world doesn’t make sense to him. The autism/whatever Laios has is such a strong running theme in Dungeon Meshi, it’s part of his character, but it’s also a driving force in the plot and the climax. Amazing.

      Not only that, but also the fact that Shuro apparently tried to let him know “in ways most people would pick up on” too. I had (and often still have) so many situations like that. To be honest, that line was literally the first time it really hit me that Laios was neurodivergent cuz I saw nothing weird in his actions or reasoning.

      @EinManU Před 2 měsíci +15

      I'm neurodivergent as well, and ive been in fights similar to that, as most others like me have probably been too
      Just for this, for realizing how much i relate to him, he went from one of my least favorite characters in the anime to my second favorite. Just... suddenly the way hes been acting makes sense. all of it.

His inability to be honest and express his emotions, in favor of staying quiet and unobtrusive, is probably a commentary on Japanese social etiquette. His feelings about Laios only prove further that he isn't actually in love with Falin as a person, but rather than an idea of Falin because she is so much like his brother. Laios being once again an accurate example as an autistic. Especially when Shuro says he's not taking it seriously. I cannot express how often I felt that in life. Reality is Shuro is meek to the point it borderlines cowardice. He's envious of Laios's frank and honest nature.
    Also Shuro fell in love with Falin because she doesn't behave like most women Shuro knows. (That whole scene with the caterpillar? It's because Shuro was surprised Falin wasn't disgusted by it. Meanwhile she's just fascinated by the fact it was female.)
    The frustrating thing is he LOATHES those qualities in Laios but loves them in Falin. Difference is Falin can read social cues better because she was already friends with Marcille. Problem is she's TOO considerate of other people, so Shuro might've misread her behavior as romantic.

      @@syzler8664 it's mainly because women in Shuro's homeland are raised to be rather demure (also doesn't help with how the women in his life behave around him because of his higher status). (Also because Shuro loves bugs and it scared off girls whenever he showed them off. Hence why he developed feelings so quickly.)
      Because Falin is frank and honest, like Laios, Shuro potentially mistook it as her showing romantic interest. But it's just her being friendly, and again being too considerate.
      Also a problem is Shuro loves the IDEA of Falin.
      (A funny note to is in an omake, when Laios was checking out a magic mirror to see what everyone would be like as the opposite sex. Female Shuro would've fallen for Laios. Which again plays into Shuro loving the idea of someone.)

    I think it's more of a non sexual nudity than fan service tbh. Specially since because it's all in the manga too and I think it's incredible world building actually! Anime tend to humanize monsters too much but in Dunmeshi even the human-like monsters are disturbing. Their appearance it's usually to mimic and lure their prey and it makes them even more terrifying.

    I'm gonna have to say, i'm with laios here.
    Her design is so cool, i love it. also the way you can clearly see the human part is always the first thing to move, dragging the rest of the body after it - for example with that tail-swing at 37:57. Its just so good - the animators and the mangaka clearly thought a lot about how a creature like that would move and fight.
    also... this is one of those cases where i'm not sure if i should be scared, aroused or amazed. All of them probably, i'm Scarouzed

    They showed how Kabru discerned that Laios is extremely obsessed with monsters, while being totally carefree/naive about everything else. Are u sure u want someone like that as master of the dungeon? That's a gigantic responsibility. And i have concerns how it would affect the dungeon and its contents/inhabitants (monsters etc).

    "The more we learn about Falin, the more Griffith she becomes"
    THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THIKING, AHHHHH
    Also, don't like this Shuro guy (for now). First he's telling how dedicated to his unrequited love he is, losing sleep because of her and everything, then decides to go back to his home, refusing to see everything through, which is okay, i guess, the man knows his limits and has his rights... but then he STILL wishes Falin would go with him??? What the hell man?? That's just cowardly and off-putting, like she is just a beautiful fantasy for him to dream about. Get a grip, Shuro! X(
    What Laios said was true: you have to care for yourself first and make sure you're strong, healthy and of sound mind in order to help others, especially in such extreme situations.
    Thank you for the reaction and discussion!

    It's become obvious that the Touden Siblings are both autistic. But, whereas the trait is tolerated or even seen as charming, free-spirited, or waifish in Falin partly by virtue of her being a beautiful woman, Laios is just seen as weird, awkward, and creepy for his neurodivergency. With the world making constant demands of him to conform or change to meet societal expectations.
    Falin understands this somewhat and makes effort to be kind to her brother--as she's practically his only friend before going to the island. They're the only ones who understand each other. Seeing as they have the same weird interests and thought patterns.
    However, for good or ill, Falin being there has also partly enabled Laios, as having just one person understand you and be your friend was enough for him to never need to change for the world. He has never seen his love and fascination for all things monster as anything but a good thing, as it's one of the things he shares and bonds over with his sister growing up. Instead, his frustration over his constant "otherness" or "othering" is directed outwards instead of inwards. He thinks the world around him should change. Not him. He knows the world wasn't built for him, but why should he change who he is for a world that never bothered to even budge for his sake?

      I don’t think it has much to do with her being a girl. I think it has to do with her being less on the spectrum than he is. She had trouble making friends growing up and seemed like the only friend she made was Marcielle. You’re right tho that Laios needs to and has been learning how to function without her. I actually don’t think that dream he has of her leaving was about death, and more about how he needs to accept she won’t always be there for him anymore.

    The fanservice situation in anime has (somewhat justly) created a very strong backlash effect, but the kneejerk reaction goes too far at points. Boobs do move if you jump down two floors and harpies as monsters would have no reason to cover themselves. More than focusing on the puritanical aspect of absolutely zero attempts of sexuality, one should really consider stuff holistically and see the intent behind things. I did not see much anything sexual about Falin's boob physics, the shirt ripping, or the harpies, and even if one did, I don't think it is a problem. Sexual fanservice was not the focus of those scenes in any way, except for maybe poking fun at the whole discussion with the Marcille and Shuro reaction shot. It is not a binary value of whether there is only bad fanservice or puritan prudence, what I think this series achieves is a realistic, human relationship with its characters sexuality in a story where that is not the focus of the story.
    I will absolutely say that Delicious in Dungeon has no fanservice (sans Senshi). I will absolutely say that it has sexual content. Are those the same thing? Abso-fucking-lutely NOT. It is just a refreshingly true to human nature story exploring so many aspects of it without shying away nor overstating any. This all ofc applies to the side theme stuff, it is pretty clear and expected that eating, cooking, and ecology are very much a hard focus as the main themes.

    • @lightningbulb227
      @lightningbulb227 Před 2 měsíci +7

      Heavy agree, all of the "fanservice" in the most recent episode felt very natural and non-obstructive. There was no uncomfortable pause where the show had to work in a "look boobs!!" moment, it just happened and was passed on as if it were normal, which it is. I also feel the Marcille reaction shot was in character(since she's probably romantically in Falin and it feels in character for her to be outwardly embarassed/flustered in a moment like that) and not just a bit for comedy, or at least I think so.

    • @chelronin7843

      @@lightningbulb227no it made sense for marcille for sure. she would definitely act surprised at falin doing that, even if she was a monster.
      i am really bothered that they specifically target falin for the fan service. anime, unfortunately, has an issue doing this. especially anime with low fan service, they choose 1 girl to be the main “fan service” character. if you watch a lot of anime, you will definitely notice it now. im assuming its 100% a management issue because “sex sells”. really dumb but whatever
      re zero is another anime i love, it has little to no fan service. but even it has a character that is sometimes used for fan service. idk why tf some anime studios are so insistent on doing this

    • @ma.2089
      @ma.2089 Před měsícem

      @@chelronin7843 Ok going to have to hard disagree with you. You’re saying that fan service exists in this for Falin (as if the show hadn’t shown Senshi’s crotch SO many times. I guess it’s just a joke when it’s a man, but if it’s a woman it’s fanservice), cuz her boobs bounced. Ohhh noooo. Forget the fact it actually makes sense for the plot and is pretty unobtrusive.
      Re zero has fan service. How can you say Dungeon Messhi has it but re:zero does? It’s far worse than this anime in that regard and it can be argued that the anime has LESS fan service than what the artist of the series has done.
      Basically it isn’t just one target. Ppl are so against sexual stuff in any nature that the existence of boobs jumps straight to fan service.
