One thing this manga has over Frieren and Witch Hat Atelier: It has an actual ending. For real, it cannot be understated how amazing it is for a manga, or anime, or any piece of media including video games nowadays, to have an actual fully realized ending that doesn't involve an axe.

Even better, the ending sticks the landing. I was both sad and excited that the series was ending. Sad, because I enjoyed it so much and wanted more. Excited, because it looked like it was going to end well. There isn't a lot of really anything that has satisfying endings.

This. It's the only long series manga ending I've ever read that felt right. From start to finish, you know the author gave alot of thought on how the story would build up to a finale to end. Many mangas I won't name just improvise after a certain point.

dungeon meshi is so so so detailed, but the pacing is also efficient and satisfying. the details ryoko kui thought of but dont need to show in the story, she gracefully puts aside to publish as extras instead. nothing overstays their welcome and even then there is so much subtle storytelling beneath the main plot that they dont need any filler eps. the fact that the mangaka refuses anime adaptation until the series nears the ending is a contributing factor too

I've read the manga and no spoilers, only vibes: Ryoko Kui's work genuinely reminds me of Terry Pratchett's works in the best of ways. It's funny, it's tongue-and-cheek, it's goofy, but it's incredibly visceral and heartfelt and it deeply resonates with me as an autistic reader, and you can really tell just how much she loves *people* and those messy, wonderful, complicated connections they can make. I'm so glad more people are getting to experience it.

@@RutabegaNG He definitely displays it in unconventional ways from a neurotypical perspective, from what I've gathered. His love language is acts of service and action. Spoilers for the anime only folks who haven't made it past the frogs and the tentacles yet:
One of his clearest displays of empathy is when he is hyping himself into sacrificing his leg in order to get access to the dragon's weakspot. "It'll be over fast. It's nothing big. Not compared to Falin's pain." is the exact quote from the official English manga translation, but that's the whole reason he started eating the monsters and basically speedran the dungeon. A deep and profound empathy and love that required he pushed himself beyond his limits and took care of himself so that he could keep it up. It's why he has a pretty good amount of bodyfat still and is well hydrated, while Shuro looks like total shit by the time they get to their brawl. Laios saw the mistake that got his sister killed, which was fatigue and malnutrition, and made sure he would NEVER make that mistake again.

Early on the depth is hidden in details, masked by the comedy. And as you said, the comedy is very intelligently interwoven into the characters, making them more relatable. But, most crucially, as the hidden depths begin to slowly surface, the comedy becomes tied closely into the drama and horror. And that I think is the key to Delicious in Dungeon. The balance of comedy and genuine drama and horror is impeccable, making the characters more believable and relatable, and keeping the entire story grounded. Instead of losing itself to the pursuit of ultimate epicness or horror, this series manages the amazing task of keeping everything close, personal, and most of all, believable throughout by never forgetting other aspects of its characters. Thus, the comedy actually makes the drama more dramatic. And that is what makes a good, delicious, balanced meal.

I was asking myself why I wasn't enjoying Frieren as much as everyone and you pointed the right thing. I also agree with you for DM side characters, they seem to each have there own ticks, personnality and even charadesign that is more plausible in real life than in anime tropes. What I mean by realistic charadesigns is that they feel cultural and personnalised at the same time were Friren ones feels more random I guess (I don't mean that Frieren charadesigns are bad, but some doesn't feel really inspired or unique). As he pointed in the video, DM isn't afraid of showing their characters lacks which make them more real.

The show's focus on adventure is based on how much the director loves the manga and how much Kui loves western fantasy. Kui also loves drawing just as much as she loves food and fantasy. She planned out a whole fantasy world with different countries, how they interact, the different races that show up, the ways their societies function, etc. She's a true creative in the genre.
I'm just gonna say, what Tolkien did for literative fantasy is close to what Ryoko Kui's doing for anime fantasy. She has 4 books full of reference sketches and notes about how modern fashion would work with every fantasy race. She includes rough sketches of every new idea she had in every volume released.
The production is all very Tolkien-esque, with all the appendices, notes, and artwork that would never see the light of day anywhere else.

the world and characters are extremely well thought out and so much of it barely even gets touched on within the main story. theres just so much information about the world that it feels like a place where an unlimited number of stories could take place. honestly it would make for a really fantastic ttrpg setting, which makes sense cause the author literally read through d&d handbooks for inspiration for dungeon meshi lol

I think I saw this all over my tumblr dash before starting it, and Senshi's English VA, Sungwon Cho (ProZD), is why I caved and started watching. I watched the first episode (I think four episodes total had released), got hooked, and immediately binged the manga. I'm so excited for the rest of the anime and seeing more scenes brought to life. So far episode 17 has been my favorite, and I'm incredibly excited to see how they adapt certain things.

Great video essay. I just started and caught up on Dungeon Meshi two nights ago. In one night. I was blown away. I do NOT care for cooking, sports, or gambling animes, so I had almost written off Delicious in Dungeon because I imagined how annoyed I'd be fast-forwarding through the inane foodie parts. Instead, I found a grand story, chock-full of violence, lore, tension (MaricillexFalin shipper here. Lolz), hope, beauty, and ridiculousness. I have barely notcied having to cut past the 3-5 minutes of food prep and cooking each episode.
Honestly, I'd kept up so little on the show, I had thought it was done airing!!! Lolololz on me. Looks loke I'm waiting on the edge of my seat each week with you other weebs.

Its a story about how far we are willing to go to eat what we want and avoid what we dislike eating, both literally and figuratively

video came out the perfect time just finnished episode 19 and read a little ahead in the manga. og i only watched this cause im a cook my self. i felt the first 3 episode were kinda weak but i was like the cooking and comedy was enoug to keep me going but as we got to episode 4-5 when we were getting a lot cooler monsters and deep history of the dungeon teased i was thinking things were getting interesting and geunenly good, by episode 7 the fights and chase scenes were actully getting intese and the lore dumps about stuff like revival the war the elfs and dwarfs had to the living painting episodes witch was not only brilliant but turned out way more importen down the line then one first would think. then when we got to the red dragon like wow im sure we seen it not spoiling for people but wow. we have all joked in anime for many years trigger would save anime and end the isekai. over exaguration we all grown tired off im sure, but i honestly think with both the production and popularity of this a frieren we may just enter a age of real fantasy anime hopefully unpar with frieren and dungeon meshi
