- Phrozen Sonic Mini 8K In-Depth Test And Review - Part 1
I received my mini 8k right on christmas day 2021, but i only able to test it and upload the video now.
Part 1 is mainly consist of the printer build, and some troubleshooting for the problem that i saw on people that already have their mini 8k and post about their problem on social media.
FYI, i never do the tuning whenever i replace the fep, i did this in this video for the sake of argument. LOL
If you want or have model that you want to be test print on mini 8k, i can print it for you and show the result on part 2 video. i will keep this offer open for the next 3 days since this part 1 video uplaoded.

Idk why is this guy still here? Dennys should be hired by Phrozen / Prusa / Formlabs already! He is Truly Remarkable!! 👍👍👍👍👍
Great video as always! Thanks for taking time to figure these things out.
Wow. Thanks for this in depth review dude, very very concise and to the point, and a tonne of work went into this. This was exactly the review I was looking for, all the other guys just gush about the print and don't go into any more detail..
You are a legend. Love your in-depth videos. I can’t wait for my Mini 8K to arrive. What a rollercoaster ride this video was for me!
Thank you
this was extremely helpful. I'm considering buying one of these and I appreciate all the time you put into troubleshooting the issues.
Thank you!
I love your every review. really honest. show ploblem and ways to fix it. Best 3d printer review chanel for my opinion.
Thank you
Thank you, Dennys! Your experience is awesome! Phrozen should hire you )
Maybe one day! LOL
Your videos have been an absolute lifesaver for me since I just got back into 3d printing! Spoke with you for just a tiny bit in a FB group as well! Was wondering if it'd be possible to make a video about supports? Like ideal sizes of the supports, where and when to use certain ones, etc? I know there's tons of videos out there on it, but your videos are the ones that really got my printer working with such great quality, so I trust you more on it all lol
Yes i am planning to.
But since support has a very wide range of variation
I am thinkin of making series video of it
It's so funny to see your boxes of labeled test prints. I feel much less crazy now! I also have piles of carefully labeled and sorted calibration print samples sitting on a storage shelf for all of my machines and resins.
So far I haven't had any print quality issues with the black tape installed, my 8K has been pretty much perfect out of the box printing layers as tight .02mm layers. The Phrozen 8K Mini is hands down the best printer I have ever owned. Truly amazing prints.
Great video as always! I learn something every time I tune in.
Hahahaha gotta keep all tests sorted right.

Thank you for sharing. Very detail.
Cross pattern, FEP frequency, it's like viewing a drum tuning video :D.
well i never install my fep with tuning the frequency, i did it only for the sake of argument. LOL
OMG I feel like I am in 3D Printing Masterclass. Man, you are my Hero :)
very Pro work thank you for sharing
Awesome trouble shooting skills
Dennys thank you for sharing all your hard work! (Here and on FB). My 8k won't come for a few months yet.
I believe you wont regret your mini 8k
On some print result o have here it is definitely #epic8k
LOL
Thank you for the video!. I'm very perfectionist for everything and I found your video really helpfull.
Same here.
LOL...
@@wangdennys I will try with everything that you put in the video...I ordered the tape🤣🤣
Try first without replace the original fep.
I already ditch the original fep on kapton tape.
thanks for the review mate.
cheers Jakob from fb
thank you
Great video ! Is there a way to correctly do the compression test without a digital calipers for mesuring ?
This is interesting and maybe it would explain why my prints always have massive compression on the first minimeter or so.
I might have to raise the build plate a little bit and test out.
Hi Dennys,
Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. Just an information ; for my mars 3d printer i need to put 8 sheets of paper (8x0.09mm) to counter compression effect. Now "disk compression.stl" and "Compression Steps Test 1.stl" are perfectly printed ! Regards
Wowwww 8 sheets of paper?
Good to hear the result.
But man 8???
LOL
Man, thanks for all that hard work! Best sm8k video so far 🙂 do you have resin profiles for the 8k resin with 0.02 layer height??
Not yet
All still print using grey 4k to even the playing field on print comparison with 8k.
I will make separate video specially testing the 8k resin.
do you know if the newer firmware update for the mini 8k resolves the z calibration issue with the tape? SHould I remove the black tape still if I'm using 2 paper to calibrate?
HI Dennis how thick is the yellow tape that you used in sostitution of the black original one? I understood that is clapton tape is it trow? and overmost the tape in the square is superimposed, so it doesn't create a double thicness where the tank touch the plane?
CiaoSergio
Great video man:) where did you get that head? would like to test print my new phrozen sonik mini 8k
So the key to successful prints : ANGER IN HEART
Noice!!!!
LOL
Hi Dennys , Do u have any solution to keep the orange acrylic item from resin ? I have trouble cleaning the acrylic item, can you share some tips with me?
great video as well!!!! =)
Check previous video
1. Perfect bed adhesion
2. Super easy resin calibration
@@wangdennys watched both. That’s why I had asked if you could do a dummy’s video on how to configure. No worries thanns
What should be the 3 measurements for the steps in the compression disk? Lychee says overall height is 2.10mm but curious what the other steps should be. is it .10, 1.10, and 2.10?
I have a photon mono x. Im about to order one of these
Another very interesting review. :) Every video I learn something new about 3D printing. It's really a pity Phrozen products seem to have issues right out of the box. Mini 4k had issues, now Mini 8k. Frankly, as a newbie to printing, I wouldn't know how to troubleshoot if I see those print lines. However, thanks to your testing and troubleshooting, new Mini 8k owners have some potential solutions.
Separately, an observation. Correct me if I am mistaken, but if I recall correctly, Mini 4k had better light uniformity as compared to Mini 8k.
Well they are budget printer after all
But wait for the part 2, you will figure out if it worth it or not when you see the print result.
Mehehehehehe
@@wangdennys I am sure it prints very well after your troubleshooting. So far, other reviewers have indicated that there has been a noticeable increase in detail / crispness of prints, especially with the 8k resin.
As for the price, the Mini 8k is considered pretty pricey. My Photon Mono 4k is less than 50% of its price. :)
Spoiler alert
It is epic8k
LOL
People can decide on part 2 wether mini 8k is for them or mini 4k is enough.
LOL
@@wangdennys Waiting for part two :) and thanks for your hard work!
Hi. I love your kitty logo! I have several wonderful rescued kitty pals =^..^=
Thank you
Thank you for your explanation. Really i am happy to see your video , i am new for this 3D printing. Pls kindly help me ,how to avoid bad printing line / wave form line in the image.
Great review! But what surprised me to see is that the build plate of the 8k is wider than the 4k one. The specs on the Phrozen site state the print volume of the 8k is L16.5 W7.2 H18 cm, and for the 4k L13.4 W7.5 H13 cm, so the 4k should be wider right? (7.2 vs 7.5) But in your video the 8k one looks longer *and* wider.
I also checked the parameters in Chitubox and Lychee, there they also use 7.2 width for the mini 8k. So that's really the print limit? even though the build plate physically is wider?
Build plate can be wider
It is different from build size.
And as always, build plate will be slightly longer and wider compare to build size
Thank you for the review. I learned a lot.
I measured the thickness of the black tape on a SOnic Mini 4K.
When you measure two layers of black tape overlapping on corners it totals 3 to 5 times the height of a single Z layer.
Then add to that the build plate itself is not perfectly flat. They do not trim the tape so that it does not obstruct the contact with the build plate.
So it is not possible to have the FEP flat and parallel to the screen and the build plate all on one plane.
It is all I can do to stop myself from using some really bad language.
How hard can it be to attach a screen flat onto a surface?
Why would anyone expect overlapping layers of tape to be trouble-free?
I feel you 😆
Currently, after your review which printer do you recommend, this 8k or the other 4k? Is the sonic 8k really worth that price? I plan to use it for jewelry.
We shall see on part 2 ok
You could use a right angle USB extension cable to bring the port to the front.
the usb port is already at the front, only the power button that is at the back.
but usb extension will a good idea for other printer that has usb port at the side
Dennys, english is not my first language, so forgive me if i aks something verry logical.
Can you tell me a bit more about the black tape and your tape?
- i mean, you install a mat screenprotector on the schreen (inside the black tape)? is the tape still higher then the protectore then?
- if you remove the blakc ape and ude 2 rows (slightly overlap) what is the difference in hight then ? of how can that be such a difference ?
Honestly
No idea the why overlap kapton tape is fine
But not the black tape.
LOL
I did print full plate and place object at the corner where the kapton tape overlap
But it still come out fine.
So i cant really explain it.
But it just works.
🤣😂🤣😆
What castable resin do you recommend for this printer, one that will make use of 8k capability and print at 20microns? I think current Phrozen castable resin is meant for 30-50microns
I have x-one and senertek
Gonna test it.
Hello
Can any one tell me how i can get parametters for the resin
Very good in-depth review. Do you have any link for the head you tried to print ?
Unfortunately it's my friend design and he is sharing it to public
I am sorry
Hello Dennys, could we use 3M Scotch tape ? As the mono screen is not directly under the FEP but a glass plate is. The point being to stop resin from getting in the housing . What are your thoughts my friend.
Still better option is kapton tape
To minimize thickness and it also block uv very well
@@wangdennys thank you for your reply
@@wangdennys I didn’t realize the black tape also blocked UV as well or is that it’s #1 priority?
So both the 4k and 8k mini need to have the tape replaced?
I'm thinking of getting the 8k and while troubleshooting is part of the process having to make modifications out of the box doesn't sit well with me 🤔
Some user claim they print fine right out of the box.
So what happen to me may not happen to others.
This is just an alternative for solution in case someone need it.
@@wangdennys Thanks for responding, appreciate it!
Will definitely give it a go then.
Do you have any video on calibrating machine for different resins? I would like to use B9 Emerald green resin as my caster is good at casting this... Any advice?
Yes
Check my older video for easy resin exposure calibration
@@wangdennys thank you!
Hello, I have a question. How many leveling errors do you allow?
i did a 4 point compression level disk test, and only one point has a difference of 0.2mm in height. Do you need perfect leveling?
(I tested it with 30um.)
It depends.
If you need perfect leveling or not
@@wangdennys I usually print out small models. So I'm thinking of perfect leveling. Thank you for your answer. The leveling of 3sheets of A4 paper could reduce errors a lot.
I'm very satisfied with this.
Ordered early bird and they still haven't shipped :/
9:00 what does he means exactly i dont really understand someone plz explain
Sorry, that is the best way i can explain it.
How wide is your Vinyl Press Tape? Does it mater?
Vinyl press tape?
The kapton tape?
The width doesnt matter.
I did a 0.2mm shim + 2 sheets of paper (0.2~mm) =0.4mm~. 4 bottom layers and I ended up with 1.40~mm thickness disc. But what I am not quite clear on is do I set z=0 (I have a saturn) after levelling is complete? The thin section is 0.22~mm.
1.4mm, that is way too short.
Try raise 0.4mm z offset
@@wangdennys great, was thinking that but I am not a pro like you ;) thanks!

Hi! Could you please so video, start to finish how to calibrate? Kind of a dummy version? hehe.. =) I have one of these, I haven't set it up yet but wanted to make sure I have something to reference. Especially since this is diff then my other printer which has a calibrate function on it.
Just curious, why didn't you suspect the Z rail when you saw the print lines?
If you see at the back in the video
I already done the stability torture tests.
😆
@@wangdennys I see.. so passed torture tests but when print normal models, got print lines?
Yes just as you described
@@wangdennys learned something new.. thought the print lines would appear on all prints including the torture tests.
Print lines appear more visible on the oval tube model due to the curve
On stability torture test it also appear but i didnt realize it.
Hence all my crazy lots of tests to check and compare.
What is the correct range of tightness for the fep in hz? Like 350?
I am sarcastically do the fep tuning to show it is useless.
Just make sure it is tight.
Sorry I’m not good at understanding sarcasm lol. Thanks
@@brendon6930 LOL
the gap from screen to fep always baffles me for resolution becuase the light can spread out before it gets to the fep
It is not noticeable even with the help of macro lens.
No need to worry.
Buyer beware! these might have brittle LCD's. Mine chipped on the first failed print and phrozen is refusing to file a warrantee claim for it.
Hi Bro, i have question.
Have you ever changed the welcome logo on the Phrozen Mini 8k??
i once found a tutorial to change the welcome logo for sonic 4k, but i can't use it on mini 8k.
i need it for educational purpose, could you please help me bro.
or does anyone here knows how to change the welcome logo?
Nope
Never change it yet and have no idea.
Kind of confused me how the black tape was causing the FEP to come loose after you already tightened it.
No
The screen is not glued to the platform.
And the blacktape is kinda flexible, causing the screen move while printing.
Kapton tape more rigid and hold the screen in place well.
Would the same thing happen with the Mighty 8k. Cause I still have the black tape from phrozen around the screen
i got my mini 8k printer to and tried it 1st time, big fail as one of the base fall during the print and the supports made mini dent on the plastic base, not easy to see but in an angel. does this means i need to re-calibrate the machine, 2 paper etc?
First try relevel with 3 papers first.
Then adjust bottom exposure again.
Check my previous video about bed adhesion for reference.
@@wangdennys i will give it a try soon, many thanks
@@wangdennysthanks, the 3 paper does work and it is much better now, but I notice two problems. 1st the print kept falling off on leeches slicer's light supports auto, and my model is very small like war hammer chest size. I now stick some middle size support in to stronger it. 2nd is there are lines on the flat surfers, (not the print line) only occurs when I lay my print in flat print. not the lines in highs as they aren't noticeable does this normal ?

Your stress tests and standard for quality are so much better than other youtubers, really helps to make my decision.
Do you like the printer?
We shall see on part 2
Ah I figured out why I have a massive hard time figuring out the compression and all on my Mono X; it's because the Mono X has this dumb 10 transition layers that you can't turn off. So the the 10 layers after the burn in layer will always be overexposed and throw off all the compression tests.
Yep
We cant turn off mono x transition layers.
@@wangdennys I have a Photon mono 4k, not x, but maybe the only difference is the size and I'm strugling with compression too. So no way to solve it? How to calibrate time exposure and compression considering the files are thin? I used your calibration file and the columns are short indeed.
Did you find a solution Cake?
@@renatosilva2078 leveling your built plate with 3 A4 80gsm papers
@@renatosilva2078 My solution might not work for you, since you use the regular Mono 4k. The Firmware might work completely differently on your device. I don't even know if you have the 10 transition layers build in.
My solution is for my Mono X specific, which involves putting the Burn In layer at 1 and using a long Lights Off display. This is going to change massively on other printers, because Mono X behaves so differently.
