    I am the Proud Owner of a 2015 Cadillac ELR (Electric Luxury Roadster) and the 2015 ELR tested her is essentially identical to my 2014 ELR since there were no changes to the 2015 model. The fact that I am able to get up to 50 miles on a fully charged battery - as opposed to the 35 miles that this brick-foot test driver was able to get on the batteries clearly shows how totally unfamiliar he is with the technology in the ELR. For openers, the Regen Paddles on the steering wheel provide only One of the Four Levels of Regenerative Braking available to the driver. And considering that the steering wheel mounted Regen Paddles provide the strongest and the highest level of regenerative braking - using the Paddles exclusively for regen braking will definitely make for a clunky braking experience.
    But when you learn about the four different regen braking options and you learn how to use them properly and effectively you can easily slow and stop this 4,000 vehicle very smoothly without putting any heavy G's on you or your passengers. Proper utilization of the regen braking system, along with proper driving technique (aka - don't drive with a Brick Foot - like this completely unskilled test driver does) and you too - like me can get up to 50 miles of electric-only driving on a fully charged battery. Furthermore, through proper use of the regen braking system and by learning how to switch between the battery and the gas engine powered electric generator it is possible to increase the highway MPG and hence the driving range of the ELR beyond the book specs. In a recent 224 mile trip that I took from the Hudson Valley NY area to Harrisburg, PA - I averaged just under 40 MPG and still had 126 miles of driving range remaining - which translates to a total range of 350 miles. No Tesla on the planet can come remotely close to that range.
    Best of all: whereas a Tesla (which can't even go 350 miles) would, at the end of its battery charge, have to hunt down a charging station and be delayed there for a few hours to recharge its battery - I can make a quick 5-minute stop at any convenient gas station along the way (2 min to top off the small 9.5 gallon tank and 3 min to stretch and grab a cup of coffee) and then I'm back on the road with another 350 miles of driving range. Don't believe the posted MPG and Driving Range numbers for the ELR - they are very much down-rated to account for the vast majority of the drivers on the road who drive very inefficiently with a Brick Foot - which is also a very dangerous way to drive and which is the main reason why there are over 40,000 deaths on our highways here in the USA alone and over 1.5 million people injured annually from motor vehicle accidents - not to mention the Billions of Dollars in Property Damage.

    The ELR is not only the most beautiful Cadillac ever made, it is one of the most beautiful production cars ever made. It is achingly beautiful on the outside, and the inside's pretty nice too.

    It's mind boggling that you can buy a Nissan Leaf or Prius Plug in and still have over 50k left over for other toys instead of buying the ELR.

  • @sonyab523
    @sonyab523 Před 7 lety +2

    I'm kind of glad they priced it poorly. Now I can get it super cheap with low mileage for 30k vs. 75k.

  • @tbirdboy
    @tbirdboy Před 10 lety +1

    Cadillac will never learn. The Cimmaron and the Allante were sales disasters. It looks as if the ELR has some distance from the Volt but it'll never shake that relationship.
    And the Allante tried to compete with Mercedes 500SL on price but didn't even come close.
    Don't suspect it'll fair any better against the Tesla.
    But it is sleek and Cadillac has a hell of a marketing department. ..

  • @FoodyTunes
    @FoodyTunes Před 10 lety +1

    Beautiful car, great materials, excellent quality. I personally wouldn't pay for this if I had the money though. If the price was lowered when Cadillac eventually comes out with it's Tesla competitor that would be great. Otherwise, this car is simply a statement from GM showing off "Art and Science" theme, which isn't necessarily a bad thing for Cadillac which is trying to shed it's old brand perception.

    What the hell was Cadillac thinking when it priced this thing?

    • @weedmastersr
      @weedmastersr Před 10 lety

      It's all about following emissions regulations and crap like that. You see, each car brand will have to have a certain average of fuel efficiency, emissions and other environmental stuff to follow. The average is calculated between all the car models that brand sells. In order to achieve those government requirements, Cadillac needs to make "green" cars like this to keep their environmental impact down. It's just made to please the government. They don't really care if they sell any, and hence the ridiculous price.

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 Před 8 lety +2

      +pwoo124 I have a guess:
      GM spent their better part of welfare money from Obama in 2009 developing the Volt at full steam, even when the entire company was falling apart. When the 2011 Volt hit the dealers, sales were marginal at best due to high cost, bad publicity of GM & the political correctness of the Volt's development. GM obviously then decided it needed another car to use the expensive Voltec Electric system to try and recuperate the R&D cost.
      Buick was mainly a China-oriented brand & it won't work on trucks, hence Cadillac being chosen. To make it more upscale & luxurious yet fit in Cadillac's lineup, it was designed as a sleek coupe. Then GM execs saw the Tesla Model S. They probably figured if a no-name manufacturer can make an electric car yet charge ~$75k for one, why not an established luxury brand like Cadillac making an electric "sport coupe" charge even more? Hence the ridiculous asking price of this ELR.

    I own a Chevy Volt and love it but the Elr is insanely overpriced

  • @hyylo
    @hyylo Před 10 lety +6

    The real reason why this is so overpriced is because the fat unions at companies like Chrysler and GM are so unproductive. Costs continue to increase just like they do with the fat unions in the public education system.
    GM and Chrysler will continue to make uncompetitive cars until all their fat managers and the unions are removed and replaced with people with brains like the guys at Tesla.
    The big problem is that GM and Chrysler workers go on strike and blackmail the american tax payer for bailouts just like the teachers union.
    There was once a time when all american cars were amazing. You now only have Tesla that is trying to be innovative.

    • @rscars1948
      @rscars1948 Před 10 lety

      The i8 is a high tech RWD sports cars. This is a Volt based FWD luxury coupe. The i8 has the performance to match a 911, giving it an argument for its price. This is around the price of a Tesla, yet is less practical and slower too. It has a nice interior and all but the i8 is an exotic whereas this is sort of a showcase.

    • @notasucia5601
      @notasucia5601 Před 10 lety
