  • If you like the idea of a Chevy Volt, but want hot looks, better performance and more cachet, Cadillac would seem to have your number with the ELR. But is this car too derivative of the Chevy?

    I'm seriously considering one now. They failed so horribly mainly due to price that their resale values have plummeted. I can pick up a 1 owner car with 20-25k miles for about $20-25k. The depreciation took out the biggest problem with the car - it's price.

    Now an amazing buy in 2022. For just over $20K, I have a car that gets 37 miles pure elctric range - which is the length of my commute - which means I never have to use any gas. But I have a 300+ mile range gas tank if I need it, so no range anxiety ever. And this reviewer must have had an early car; the brakes on mine are smooth and predictable, and the gas engine (when it kics in) is nearly silent. Also, the CUE entertainment system get lots of negative reviews, but I think it works great once you get used to it. There aren't many ELRs out there (only 3,000 produced), but if you're interested in them at all, do a test drive and you may be convinced like I was!

    I want to praise GM for actually trying electric propulsion,
    But this small of a car at this big of a price makes the Tesla S look like a steal.

      Update!!!
      After six months on sale Cadillac has only sold 390 ELRs in total
      To put that in perspective Rolls-Royce has sold 770 cars in America in the same time. Avg price of those 320k. yeesh

    My local Chevy/Cadillac dealer has an ELR for 75k. On the same lot is a new Volt for 32k, Camaro SS for 35k, C7 Corvette for 66k, and a rare Camaro Z28 for 75k. As practical as the ELR is, it would be hard to not buy a Volt and spend the rest on a Camaro SS for the same price of an ELR, or just buy a Vette or Z28.

    I like the CNET car reviews. This guy will point out the negatives and not put the candy coating on it. I think that Cadillac more than doubled the price of the Volt for moderate upgrades. The thing is, even if you like the style and updates over the Volt, you would be an uneducated d****ebag to pay that much for the wreath on the grille. And, that is not the typical Cadillac buyer.

    4:55, that is NOT a lean burn engine. I operates at stoichiometric fuel:air ratio or richer. There are no new cars that are 'lean burn' Honda and other did it in the late 1999s and early 2000s but then stopped. Atkinson cycle is not lean burn.

And if your talking about them being reliable in general, german cars are among the worse when it comes to engine failures.... Do your homework.

    I know a lot of car companies today are going high tech with touch screen and touch sensitive buttons but really a touch button to open a glove box? I wouldn't mind just a simple little plastic Handel on it that's all I'm saying. And another thing the price 80k? That much money for a earth friendly car I can understand it's luxury and gonna cost more money but common for that price I can buy a tesla model s. Never the less the new ELR is pretty nice looking change from Cadillac

    My Honda Civic gets 380-400 miles on a tank of gas and it doesn't have an electric motor. I'm confused only 37 miles on battery alone? Not sure why but the hybrid technology should be better than that especially for that price. Now if you said 300 miles on battery alone I would have been impressed.

  • @mobiusalpha
    @mobiusalpha Před 10 lety

    It sure would be nice if reviewers would get a clue and stop comparing the ELR to the Tesla Model S. They are entirely different offerings targeted at different consumers. The ELR is a very refined choice for those whose commute pattern falls within the 45 mile or so range that drivers are getting in the real world. Also, responsible journalists should stop saying the Tesla costs less. When comparably equipped, the base model Tesla costs far more. Tesla has been heavily criticized for the way they display costings on their site. If you build a vehicle out with comparable equipment and add back in the $7,500 government rebate that Tesla take off the top of their listed price which Cadillac does not, you will find the base model Telsa Model S cost quite a bit more than the ELR. Also, great features like adaptive cruise control are not even available on the Tesla. Finally, remarkable ELR features like the lack of range anxiety and stunning looks are not available from Tesla either.

  • @Trades46

    Knock $30k off that price tag and it would make a nice alternative to a Lexus CT200h or the Mercedes CLA250.
    At $75k, I wonder who in the right of mind would actually consider one, remembering a Tesla Model S is only a stone-throw away but offering blistering performance & unparalleled seating/cargo flexibility.

    • @toyotaprius79
      @toyotaprius79 Před 9 lety

      Trades46 They reduced it by $9000 (admitting that they jacked up the price to make it look premium) on the 2016 model and improved acceleration by 1.5 seconds to 60mph.

      @Trades46 Před 9 lety

      toyotaprius79
      $66,000 is still too much money for what is essentially a ~$47k Volt coupe with some leather.

    • @toyotaprius79
      @toyotaprius79 Před 9 lety

      Trades46 That seems like quite the understatement. Yeah, it has the Volt engine, but I'm seeing that as a common defense against the ELR now. It sounds as if it's unacceptable when someone says it, but now that it's out of production for the Volt, Cadillac/GM is now using the most value and power out of it. It's the same drivetrain that's propelling a car that weighs 120kg more to 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds. They increased the torque from 295 lb-ft to 373 lb-ft without any mechanical change. That has to deserve some praise.
      The 'some leather' ia not enough too. It's interior is of high-quality luxury, something that the Model S had to sacrifice on, it was especially spartan over a year ago for its flagship P85 that used to be $100,000. Interior is one of the Model S's biggest weaknesses, while it's the ELR's strength. It's basically an impression of the famed Fisker Karma. The ELR performs in a similar way in interior quality, acceleration and handling (both 0-60 ~6 sec, turning's secure and comfortable) and despite its mad +$110,000 price, everyone loved the Fisker because of the image and styling itself. Lets hope the build quality and reliability from the Fisker is not shared in the ELR!
      For an attractive, comfortable cruiser that now has decent acceleration, I'd say it's now worth its price. It's a proper cruising Cadillac, which is something that can't be said for it's unrecogniseable and overdone CTS-V. At least the Caddy is saving its long, old image in the ELR. The car's a sure way to stand out amongst the Teslas. Unfortunately, its fate is bleak once the old Gen1 Voltec drivetrain ends production, and Tesla's status of importance among the Joneses would have sealed the deal for the ELR. That would just make it even more exclusive, which is why Cadillac raised its price in the beginning in the first place.

  • @danwat1234
    @danwat1234 Před 5 lety

    The 2016 ELR has a lot more power and tech like faster Que system than previous. But .. just buy a Tesla folks. ELR has a small trunk opening, no hatch like the Volt. Front seats don't even recline all the way in some years

    • @toyotaprius79
      @toyotaprius79 Před 9 lety +1

      Travis Wang I hope you got it by now, it's been 6 months... Anyway, it is a good car, very rare and stylish, it could be a good sell if you hold on to it for over 10 years. I guess that's possible is because this is based on the Chevrolet Volt. The Voltec drivetrain is bulletproof to say at the least.

    • @Lucky8s
      @Lucky8s Před 9 lety

      Travis Wang I hope you didn't buy it. Just because they were selling it for $55k doesn't mean it's actually worth that much. You can get a Prius and a sports car for that price.

    Why in the world would anyone get this over the Chevy Volt? And if they want a luxury car, it's the same damn price as the Tesla Model S! Basically this car is less useful than the Volt (and definitely WAY less than Model S) but MORE expensive than the S?!

  • @gary_beniford
    @gary_beniford Před 9 lety

    I think GM has some god ideas to stay in the game but they are not implementing them well for one thing a caddy should never cost that much for getting so little and should not be so underpowered and should not have all the flaws like coolly pointed out bad breaks, shaking steering wheel and break pedal when the gas engine comes on etc. for that money there are so many better cars out there any buyer would take over this.
