    Hey Wicked, check it out. If you pay 4.5 cents / kWh, then it costs you only 50 cents to charge from depleted to full. Yes, the battery pack is 16 kWh, but you only use less than 11 for those 38 miles. The rest of the battery is reserved for extending its longevity. Almost 20% of capacity at the top end is never charged, and about the same at the low end is never depleted. It's a lithium-ion thing. Having that protection, along with active thermal management and limiting the current draw (no ludicrous mode), these batteries are set for decades of life. Volt and ELR got it right.

    Years later, I still love this car and wish I had one. Compared to today’s care though, I really wish the battery could be swapped to increase the mileage. The 39 miles is nothing to right home about in today’s market. Beautiful looking car tho.

    WOW! - We are Clones! I just recently got the Exact Same Fully Loaded Car in the Exact Same Color and in the same Mint Condition - from a Cadillac dealer in White Plains NY. It was never sold and was instead kept as fleet vehicle, and I was so lucky to find it and purchase it for the same unbelievably low $31k price - with just over 11,000 miles on it! Like you - I Absolutely Love my new 2014 Cadillac ELR! I'm getting an EV Range of over 45 miles per charge! Despite my sales rep's promise of a full charge on the batteries and a full tank of gas on delivery - when I came to pick it up the batteries were fully drained and the gas tank was only about 2/3 full. But I didn't make an issue over it, because it was such an incredible find and I was so happy to be driving away in this Incredible car of my Dreams!
    I had ample gas to make the 40 min drive home, where I plugged it in for an overnight charge. A few days later I topped off the tank, and over the following 2 weeks I drove 510 miles using a combination of the battery power only and the gas-generated electric power, and when the fuel level got down to about a third of a tank I topped it off. It took only 6.9 gallons of gas to top it off - yielding an impressive 73.91 miles per gallon! Included in the 510 miles of driving was 3 round trips of 72 miles each, and a long trip from my home in the Hudson Valley NY area down to NYC and back. By recharging the batteries each night (using the supplied 110V charging cord) and then strategically switching between battery supplied electrical power and the gas-generated electrical power to best suit the differing driving conditions, I was able to rack up the 510 miles, which included a long drive from my home to NYC.
    I arrived in northern NYC with 30 miles of driving range on the batteries, and had to drive south on the Island from 125th street down to West 38th street. And with it all being stop and go driving with traffic lights on every block, I switched over to the Tour Mode and did all of my driving in NYC strictly on the batteries, including going into a parking garage inside a building, where the quiet zero-emissions all-electric drive was such a welcome perk! The fast pickup from the high torque (an impressive 295 ft.lbs.) of the dual electric drive motors - both from a dead stop, and when merging into traffic and passing other vehicles on the road - delivers such a fun and exciting and exhilarating driving experience, that unlike anything I've ever experienced in any gas-powered car. I mean this car's acceleration Blows Away the rapid acceleration of my 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP - which was powered by the infamous 3.8 L Series III Supercharged V6 that cranked out 280 ft. lbs. of torque.
    The super exotic exterior "Bat-Mobile" styling, and the awesome luxury detailing and features of the interior of the 2014 Cadillac ELR far surpasses the best decked-out cars from Tesla. And the on board gasoline-powered generator completely eliminates the Tesla's driving range limitation. Whereas a Tesla can realistically be safely driven for about 185 miles before needing a time-consuming re-charge, I can drive up to 340 miles on a full charge and a full tank, then after a quick fuel stop at any gas station (where it takes less than a minute to top off the small 9 gallon tank) I'm right back on the road again.
    A few extra notes are worth mentioning here: Don't believe the criticisms and the negative comments from some of the "expert" reviewers of this amazing car - because they'll having you believe that this is a compact car when in fact it is a big midsize car (bordering on full size!), that has a surprisingly Big Trunk with a more than ample opening, and plenty of room for a 6 Foot man in the rear seats ( my 6 ft. tall 200 lb. son found the back seat very roomy and comfortable). And once you've calibrated the CUE to respond to your touch - it responds perfectly to your touch. Guaranteed that the critics who complained about the poor response of the touch-screen never bothered to read the owner's manual - especially the section on how to calibrate the touch screen to respond to your touch.
    The Cadillac ELR is such an awesome luxury car with an incredible electric drive technology that's so advanced, that the vast majority of the drivers out there were literally incapable of understanding, comprehending and fully appreciating it when it was first introduced in 2014. That, along with high price tag scared away so many of the potential buyers, that GM was forced to halt production with a total of only 2,954 of these landmark engineering masterpieces ever produced. If you can relate to what I've posted here and if this sounds as exciting to you as it is to Wickedshrapnel and I, and if you are fortunate enough to find and acquire one of these rare ionic luxury cars, you too will Fall in Love with it - Guaranteed!

    +Wickedshrapnel - great review. Just a tip - you can get better electric range by putting the car into Hold mode when you are truckin' at 80 mph in Tejas. Save the battery charge for around town driving. Air up the tires to about 38 cold. If you have the original OEM tires on the ELR, they might be ready to be replaced. Mine were toast at 20,000 miles. I found a set of bf goodrich g-force comp 2 A/S tires to replace the Potenza OEM tires, and it transformed the way the car handles, especially in the rain.

      I really enjoyed this car but I sold mine a few years ago. The touchscreen in the middle went out and they wanted $2000 to fix it and I refused and just traded it in. So the only thing to beware of is any type of service outside of warranty will be expensive.

    • @mrtennessee1o1
      @mrtennessee1o1 Před 2 lety

      @@Wickedshrapnel Just now seeing your video....I hate to hear that you traded yours in. I've owned one since about 17 and the car is as I'm sure you already know is extremely very rare and also at the time (and still is) a special and very innovative Cadillac. There is (and has been) a replacement for the CUE system touchscreen issue. I found one from an excellent company called "Cuesreens" by Ultima Industries and they are an independent company from GM and they only specialize in offering replacement for the CUE touchscreens.
      What I found out while researching is that most current/previous owners may not be aware of is that the touch screen in the ELR, ATS, XTS, CTS models years 2013 - 2017 are built to fail and they mostly only have a lifespan of about an average around 3 yrs. GM uses a basic touchscreen that has a gel like substance behind the touchscreen and once it drys out due to heat and dry air it will basically become non-responsive, go black, or may spider crack. Dealerships charges for replacement of this is to change out the entire cue system which can range anywhere up to $1300 or more including labor (I've read blogs with even higher quoted prices). The Cuescreens company have screen replacements for around $130 - $149 and you can literally change it our your self in a couple of hours with there thorough included instructions.
      I know this info may come to you late but I hope that it will also help someone else out that also has an ELR or one of the other aforementioned vehicles in those model years or if you consider owing another one in the future. I have ordered my replacement screen from this company and will be changing mine out once I receive it.

    Don't have time to watch the last few minutes of the video, so sorry if you answered this:
    What does kicking in from electric to gas mode feel like? I assume that happens while driving? Does it feel seamless? Does it do anything like kick in a little before the battery would run out and slowly transition to gas power so you don't feel it, or is there a noticeable switch? I've never thought about what the experience would/could be like.

    • @Wickedshrapnel
      @Wickedshrapnel  Před 7 lety

      +pasta0328 This car is 100% powered by electricity. The only thing that changes is where the electricity comes from, the battery or the gas powered generator. You can feel some vibration from the generator when it is running and hear it slightly other than that the car drives the same. I think the 0-60 times are slightly faster on battery only vs generator as well since the power can be drained from the battery faster than the generator can generate power.

    • @pasta0328
      @pasta0328 Před 7 lety +1

      Oh I see, that's really interesting. Do you lose gas efficiency running electric via generator vs a gas powered engine? Seems like you'd get lower mpg there just because of the conversion, but of course higher mpg overall because it can be run off of battery.

    • @Wickedshrapnel
      @Wickedshrapnel  Před 7 lety

      33
      MPG from the generator. Similar build of car that runs on gas is the Chevy Cruise which gets 39 mpg. That car weighs a lot less though because it doesn't have a big battery like this one. The electric equivalent when it is running on battery is 82
      MPGe though which blows gas powered efficiency out of the water.

    • @pasta0328
      @pasta0328 Před 7 lety +1

      Yea, definitely more efficient overall when you include battery. That's pretty impressive efficiency running with the generator, too. Thanks!

    yeah such a nice design, love it. I'd like the 2016 with the performance package. has a slightly bigger battery and slightly more power. i believe the the 2015 volt and 2014 elr have same power, since they have the exact same powertrain. 2016 slightly beefer.
    batteries are close or similar depending on the year.

    My 2014 Cadillac ELR is hands down the most exceptional car I've ever owned! It totally blows all of the Teslas away in styling, luxury, quality, reliability and driving range. You'll pay much more for a Tesla and get much, much less - including much less driving range. Though the EPA rated electric driving range for the 2014 ELR is 37 miles - with a skilled driver behind the wheel it is easy to get up to 48 miles on a full charge. Over 98% of the daily driving I do around my local area is well under 48 miles - meaning that I get to make all of those trips solely on the car's battery power, where I get 250 mpg equivalent. Under those circumstances, the ELR will perform in 100% battery-powered driving exactly as well as the far more expensive Tesla cars. But it is on the longer trips - especially long trips on a tight time schedule - where the ELR does what no Tesla or any other 100% battery-powered electric car can do. My recent trip to Cape Cod from the Hudson Valley New York Area clearly shows how - within tight time constraints - my ELR enabled me to stick to a time schedule that no Tesla could ever handle. On the day my wife and I left for the trip, I was able to make the 277.5 mile drive to Hyannis, MA without having to stop to re-charge the batteries and without having to stop to refill the small 9.3 gallon gas tank. We did make one stop for lunch on the drive out - but there were no battery-charging stations at the Diner where we had lunch, and I didn't need to recharge the batteries anyway. I made the trip to Hyannis well within the time schedule, driving 15.1 miles using power from the batteries and 262.5 miles using electric power from the on-board generator, consuming only 6.93 gallons of gas. We hit two traffic jams where I switched the gasoline generator off and crept along on battery power to conserve fuel. And when we arrived at our destination, I had averaged 40 miles per gallon overall, and still had 135 miles of available driving range remaining - with 95 miles of driving range left in the fuel tank and 35 miles of driving range available on the batteries. I could have easily driven another 120 miles with a 15-mile reserve. Or in another words - when I left my home with a full tank of gas and a full charge on the batteries - I could have driven up to 400 miles with a 12 mile reserve remaining - before I would need to add gas or re-charge the batteries. No Tesla and no other 100% battery-powered electric car can go 400 miles on a charge. In fact, it will take up to 10 years before we have battery-only electric cars that can drive 400 miles on a charge. In the meantime - the battery and gas-generator technology - as found in the Cadillac ELR and the Chevy Volt - is so much more practical for today’s current battery technology.

      Sorry, but your story is a little hard to swallow. On my best driving manors, and with zero freeway driving, the best range I ever was able to achieve in my ELR was just short of 325 miles. Your claim of 400 miles possible rings hollow.
      Good luck in the future with your Cadillac. 😉

    I have a legitimate question .. what is the allure of the ELR , the range and power are low for even the vastly depreciated price . If you love the car that’s most important I’m just confused on why a bolt or used Tesla with more room or power wouldn’t be the choice for 30 grand a few more thousand and you have a Tesla with 180-250 mile range plus and for around 20k you could get a barely used Hyundai Ioniq or Honda Insight or even a Prius I get its slightly sleek looking but that’s all I see was just wondering if any owners or soon to be owners have any insight. If the battery still provides power while the engine is on and gives almost full power that makes sense for around 20 but if you just hand the tiny gas engine for backup that’s not enough

    This should have never become an electric car. The car is beautiful to the eye, love the interior, have no experience with the CUE so I can't say anything regarding that.
    This should have been a mid engine V8 monster. I would seriously consider buying a high mileage model and stripping open the trunk and rear seat . Remove the front engine and battery and make it a trunk space like in other mid engine vehicles such as Porsche. Put sound proof plastic or Plexiglas directly behind the seats showing a nice Cadillac engine cover.

    I completely forgot about this car, I was going to go for the Tesla but I was concerned about 100% electricity as I travel long distances on the weekend and didn't want to be stranded (stupid people use the Tesla super chargers as parking spots) This car seems to depreciate super badly. Anyone have any idea why that is? I'm concerned before pulling the trigger.

    • @Wickedshrapnel
      @Wickedshrapnel  Před 7 lety

      +sonyab523 because they weren't selling at $75k they stopped making them. Good deal if you can find a used one around $30k.

    • @sonyab523
      @sonyab523 Před 7 lety

      Wickedshrapnel thanks I did a bit more research into and you're correct. I've decided between 14' with 9700 miles with the brown interior and lux package for 33k and 14' with 14,000 miles with the brown interior option, lux package and adaptive cruise control for 31k. Not sure which one to go with.

    • @Wickedshrapnel
      @Wickedshrapnel  Před 7 lety

      +sonyab523 I use the adaptive cruise control constantly so I am biased. I would want that one.
