Sailing Across the Pacific Ocean on a 36-foot Beneteau - Ep 32

  • It's not the right time to cross the Pacific and Galapagos is closed so we tackle the 4,000 miles from Panama to French Polynesia against the wind and the current at the wrong time. It is an epically fun adventure though and we loved it!

    OK guys, pro tip, when you know you have a Fish on that’s going to steal all of your line and you will not be able to boat it with the rod you have it hooked on; you have two options. 1. Drop sail and Motor towards the fish.
    2. Or firmly grasp of the spool of line while there are still several wraps around the spool and break the line at the leader instead of at the reel. Loss of lure but you get to keep your line. Best of luck! Smooth sailing!

      Fantastic tip, thank you! We have just replaced most of our fishing gear so hopefully we don't have any more situations like this. We were ignorant going into the whole fishing thing and feel really bad about the fish we hooked but lost with gear still attached to them. We've gone to a heavier line, with smaller lures, and so far its working well. No more gear has been lost, and we're catching fish that are a manageable size.

  • @robertlee8042
    @robertlee8042 Před 3 lety +8

    When you hook a fish let out the sheets immediately given your undersized fishing gear and tackle. You don’t need a rod. You need 100 lb test tied to the stern rail and a pair of gloves.

    The contrast between this and your Canaries passage (the first long haul) is incredible. You might not notice the difference in your demeanor but you're both so very confident now, I dare say you're beginning to _enjoy_ it!

    Great job, great passage. Thank you for allowing me to join your adventure. Remember to wear your sunscreen! Not doing so in early life took me away from my 25 + yrs sailing adventures myself. 2 skin cancers, breast cancer, and am now on 9th round of surgeries, followed by....NO, NOT by following seas, but rather chemo. But....No worries, I'll kick ass on this also. I OH SO enjoyed your this part of your adventure. Look forward to more! This OH so helps me keep in the Carpe Diem mode, reminding me....I'll be back on the water again, sooner rather than later. Glad I found your site. Highest regards. Ty, Ty, Ty again. Be safe

    I started watching your videos with this one and was inspired not just by your journey but by your couple dynamic, enthusiasm and perspective. I went back through all the videos in order and now find myself watching this again with fresh eyes -- knowing what you have gone through to get to this point.
    Asher has become an excellent skipper and Dani you bring a level of reflection that goes beyond just commenting on your trip and sailing. I must admit I will be a little sad when your passage is over. Although the ocean adventure is coming to an end, I hope the story does not. I look forward to you building your home, getting married and buying a bigger boat -- then setting off on more adventures on the high seas.
    Now I am off to become a Patreon and peruse the local ads for a sailboat.
    Congratulations on your engagement and as you head back to New Zealand may you have fair winds and following seas.

      Sailing Bacchus Home , I have my sailboat here in Jacksonville, Florida where I live. I’m hoping to head to the Bahamas this late October November. I’m a relatively new Sailor as well with an old 40 foot Hunter as my first boat. I was impressed that you were sailing a Beneteau across the oceans! Many have told me boats like these are production and really only coastal cruisers. You have proved them wrong!
