- 40 Days. Veggies soon empty. Alternative diet: eating dried salted fish. How does that work??
Join us on our longest sailing adventure so far with 4000 miles from Panama’s Las Perlas islands to French Polynesia’s Marquesas archipelago across the seemingly never ending ‘Pacific Puddle’ as sailors call it. 40 days wide ocean, battling unfavourable winds and currents as well as tunas, mahis and deep-sea creatures on the hook. Watch Ilja getting out his McGyver skills when essential gear breaks down. Experience huge dolphin pods showing off their joyful somersaults around our boat as well as helicopters approaching Thula as close as 10m thousands of miles in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Yep, it sure is ♥️
Excelkk look ent video, planning to crew on a friends 49 ft Hylas from Panama to Fiji…thanks for sharing! Capt Chaz
Danke dafuer !
Fair Winds !
I dream of spending time at sea with my wife some day when our kids are grown.
Wonderful video, Thank you very much.
Good Job Thula, good job.
Great vlog. Helicopters at sea are from tuna boats and have short lifespan because captains are only interested in tuna worth ‘0000’s each and will leave helicopter stranded to catch them. Helicopter pilots buzzing touring sail boats are only interested in sunbathers.
My favorite part...When you catch a fish big enough to make you revert to your native tongue. Lol Loved it. Great videos guys!
Enjoyed your epic journey. Editing's so good. Your videos are as good as the best
Hi Guys, nice video of a long trip! The helicopter is from Panama and is a civilian registry model Robinson R44 Clipper I. The range of these is only a couple hundred miles at most so must be from a ship. I agree with the guy who commented on leaving your winch handles in, watched a lewmar fall out, skip across the deck and into the atlantic once. Expensive lesson to learn. Fair winds!
And, if the pawls break, the handle will break 'whatever' it spins around into. They're only held in place by little springs.
I love your real sailing videos. You all are such a nice couple and work together so well. Wonderful..in a word. Thank you.
Awwwe, thanks! 🙂

Thank you for making this sailing video. Well done on your crossing. And well done on the generator repair - excellent work! :-)
Thanks! Unluckily it flew apart just after our arrival at the Marquesas. But we found a good solar solution.
Fantastic 👍
That was awesome!!
Stay safe and healthy, in 2021.
Have a lot of nice sails, this year.
Greetings from Spakenburg The Netherlands Gerben T and Gabriëlle.
Thank you!
Great video guys! Greetings from Lithuania!
great video at crossing the pacific ocean
Well done and nice you sail a Vindö
Great achievement and great video footage.
Thank you!
Great video,keep it up!
22:40; the flag you found in the ocean we call in the Antilles a “palanka”. They use it for long line fishing.
Ah, alright! We didn't know.
Four thousand miles sailing on the Thula they are ready to hula, land ho, land ho, what a way to go. Two shipmates with dolphins saying we know you’re alright when you’re out of sight in Germany, remembering all those magnificent sights. Those amazing creatures are wonderful teachers. They teach us that God exists though many insist saying nay nay no way. But in a way its not God who finds us it’s we who find Him, sometimes at sea if we have wise eyes to see . 💒
Wonderfully said. Thank you!
On the Mahi... the rounded head is a female, the blunt head is the male. Great videos, thank you!
congrats on a safe crossing
great video
Amazing.....
very nice thank you
Great video, you had warm rain - we call it summer in Hamburg. ;)

Hello !
From Texas 😀😉
Klasse Video !
Tolle Aufnahmen, Danke !
Love to watch.6 month a go I but un Albin Vega 27 and hop one day , do some serious sailing.. but the motor brok down .the mast compression problem. And so one and so one . What to do? I love your enthusiasm is motivated me to keep going . And one day, I will live my dram. Fair wind. Bye bye Mario from Nord Holland.
GOOD LUCK
Be safe
The food looks Great, keep the real life going!
Found your lovely channel and subscribed. Thank you for sharing your life at sea. A little request - show us what lures you use. You are very good at catching fish. We hope to sail like you one day soon. Cheers.
We actually use octopus lures, nothing special :) The ones with glitter worked best! Keep up the dream, make it true. It's truly worth it.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great job of sailing 4000 miles despite taking 40 days....at least you have a flexible schedule and stayed safe! That was an inspiring generator repair and sail recovery repair! What would you add in packing your provisions for future Pacific crossings? How much water did you bring and how much was left? Thanks!
I was on a different boat back in 1981-82, (A Herreshoff Marco Polo 'Valkyrie) and we had 200 gallons of fresh water. There are plenty of rain squalls in the trades....so we arrived in the Marquesas with full tanks. That was the year of the first recorded El Nino....and there were 7 hurricanes....there had not been one in the area for 40 years. Friends of ours were lost on the trip down to Papeete, we had left the Marquesas a week earlier than they did, so had a nice sail down. Took two direct hits from cat 2 storms while we were there, one of which we were one of only two survivors in the anchorage....everyone else broke their 3/8" chain and went on the beach. Being a larger boat, we used 1/2" and did ok. Blew all the paint off the fronts of the masts though. Sure would like to know where Valkyrie is these days.
We had 400l and used little bit more then half of it.... for the next time a bit comfort would be nice like a freezer or more storage!
Keep!
He guys, thank you for your incredible footage. Would be even nicer if you would leave the fish in the water :).
Fair winds and all the best wishes!
Thanks! As you have no fresh veggies left after 1.5 weeks and the body needs quite some energy doing night shifts all the time, one fish or two won‘t hurt as we only take what we need. Also for us it’s not easy killing a fish but it‘s also really challenging if you have no supermarket around the corner. I guess the big illegal fishing fleets are a slightly bigger problem 😉
9:02 - "Uncertain Changes" by Yonder Dale
Well done! Which baits did you use? Tips? Seem to have been very successful at fishing😂
Thanks! Mostly octopus (rubber), so specific color. We let it trawl quite a while away.
When there was no wind at night, I just let her drift with no sails.
Hello! Great video. I have relatives in Bopfingen Germany. All the best from St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada.
Do you know Holly who is sailing her 27 foot sloop named Gecko?
Yes we do, we spent some time together in the Polynesian isles (see teaser)
Ok guys. I've benn watching your trip from the very beginning and I've arrived this far. I have a question for you: Are you really doing this on a 33 foot wooden boat???
Yes, why not? 😉 No the boat only has a wooden superstructure, the bottom is GRP.
@@ThulaSailing Ok, but she is a 33 for, right?
Thanks for your answer and good wind!!
That was an Oar fish not a sea snake.
That fish was a huge thing. How many meals will it make?
3 days and some more salted and dried!
👍⛵🎣🌊💯
Moin! Also wir habe eine Vindö 45. Die 45 steht für die Segelfläche am Wind. Wir sind 33ft, also ein bisschen mehr als 10m
Great video. I'm curious to what the boat is.
Looks like a Vindo 45.
That's right
Nice video - if you did it again how would you do it differently ?
a faster boat!
Yes faster and bigger, but for that we have first to work a bit!
Mako sharks will jump out of the water to catch birds
Thanks for letting us know, we didn't know that!
2000 dollars to just stop at the Island in the Galapagos ??? Is that an average price for stops???
This is how the cookie crumbles nowadays in Equador. You pay over 800$ for National Parc fee, the agents are quite pricey (you need to take one), we would have needed extra technical equipment, your hull must be clean&your boat fumed (if you call it that way) with certificate. All this adds up to quite a bit. Some fees are quite understandable to keep the special environment intact, with some fees you ask yourself if they are really fair rates as you can hardly move your boat around the islands anyways. But for sure it will always stay a unique place, maybe better to be travelled to by airplane though?
what is the make of your boat ?
A Vindö 45 from Sweden
Neptunes hahahhahah
What’s your boat’s maker and model?
It’s a Vindö 45
Hey Thula! How many foot have you got ? 🌻
33🙂
33🙂
@@ThulaSailing Big Thanks for your videos ! Iam really in love with your boat, trip and personality’s Guys.
Good win to you 😎
You should have bought a honda
C des allemands?
Oui des allemands 🙂
The only negative thing I would say is once you catch a fish kill it right away, why let it suffer !
The quizzical gateway centrally harass because outrigger conjecturally scream to a hollow gosling. woebegone, unequaled selection
Can't stand all this fish killing. You guys look pretty well fed - is this really necessary? Most people I know have or are switching to plant-based diets. Et tu?
Too much babble.
