- (Edit: I never expected this many views, and so much love and support for this video, and my lifestyle. Thank you all. However, I feel it's important to note now that I did not create these to be "CZcams videos," or to monetize in any way. I simply uploaded them to CZcams in order to share them more easily with friends and family. So I can't say there's another one in the pipeline yet, but hopefully I'll be inspired to make more soon :) Also worth noting - Mara Noka and I have completed another North Atlantic crossing with @womenthewind4226, we filmed the whole thing, and we are now in the process of putting together a documentary (2023). Love you all!)
Instead of writing about this voyage, as I was already far behind in publishing stories anyways, I decided to document the trip on my iPhone SE (with no case and a cracked screen - we made it). This is a very long, boring, scenic video of my solo E to W Atlantic Crossing in 2020, escaping from Spanish lockdown to be closer to my family near the Caribbean.
Dear Kiana, this was such an entertaining, interesting, beautiful, and captivating video. And I really liked the sounds. From the wonderful worldly style music to the sounds of the ocean. I feel like I got to go on this adventure with you. I would give anything on earth if I only could have. But then I wouldn't want throw off or impose on your peace of mind in solitude on your journey. I grew up in a sailing family as a young boy, and my father was a boat designer and builder of catamarans, and so when I stumbled on this video, it caught my eye. All these years and I never knew about Mr. Wharram's interesting life and quest to explore catamaran design and sailing adventures. The wharram's seem a lot slower than what I'm used to, but there are many things about them that are undeniably good. The first thing I noticed is the simplicity, balance, and the strength of the construction and rigging. The next is how functional, comfortable, and nice the interior space is. Then for it's length there is relatively very little structure above deck, which comes in handy when you don't want a lot of windage creating unnecessary drag slowing you down or blowing you off the heading that you want to keep. And the general design of the boat seems very sea worthy with the double ended hulls, it fits in nicely to the swells. I notice that you have many ocean sailing skills that seem to be instinctual like you may have spent some time sailing as you grew up. You seem to have a sixth sense about how to do what's right, safe, and pleasant. Just keep your eye out for harsh weather, high seas, and shallower oceans and coastlines where rogue waves might break. You seem to have every angle covered. I'm looking forward to seeing your next adventure. And above all you are one of the most beautiful women that I have ever seen in my entire life. Happy sails to you.
Wow thank you so much for such a wonderful comment!! Really truly.
I am a fan of Pip Hare, and you are a beautiful contrast. I started sailing in the early fifties so that dates me somewhat. Take good care of yourself and your boat, and thanks for the lovely Atlantic crossing.
Yes, you put it nicely, I agree completely.
You mentioned your father - If I may ask, was his name Joe? Joe Quigg, legendary surfer?

Flimsy boat but very fair weather - and nice peaceful vibe 👍
I have never had a film instill such a strange mixture of calm, crazy and inspiring all in less than 30 min, she deserve some kinda award for this

Gotta be one of the BEST you tube videos ever -- This is a REAL HONEST OPEN OCEAN ADVETURE -- shown to the World by a down to earth wonderful woman who exudes courage, confidence and a warmth second to none. Well done Kiana and may you continue to show us much more of your travels. You are fantastic and SO different from the norm -- beautiful Wharram proves itself to be a very capable platform for open ocean sailing and you nailed it ! ! ! ! All the best - --
We saw her in Wrightsville Beach NC a few weeks ago, she was getting ready to head back to Portugal. What an amazing adventure, and a great way to live a life.
What he said 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻💥💥💥💥 Flipping downright amazing and beautiful story 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏻
Would love to know more about the back story - how did you start sailing? How did you get your Wharram? What is your life story before you started this? And so on. Intrigued! 🙏🏻
You may be happy, well, comfortable, and at peace.✌️☮️ Seems like a unique adventure.
Found your website and now have the backstory thanks
One Word....beautiful👍
One of the best travel videos I've seen on CZcams. Very heart touching and inspiring. A perfect illustration that you don't need a fancy boat to go on an adventure, nor an expensive camera to make a great movie about it.
This is the most pure adventure i have ever seen on youtube. So free and un-cluttered. Truly inspiring. I absolutely love the music, but mostly the simpleness of your boat. Its not about what you have, its what you do with it.
Love
truly Emil. not what you have but what you do with what you have. the most beautiful things are the simple things.
@@finderwhale6531 Yes, yes, yes.

Speechless. Like a step back in time to purity and honesty. Old wood, worn canvas and the most incredible oceanic meander where the journey is all that matters. Breath. Taken. Mind. Inspired. Thank you
Thank YOU!
This is the kind of content we really want to see. It’s so joyful and authentic. I’d love to see more about your boat and your journey. Would be awesome if you’d reconsider and make more videos
OMG, I fell in love with this young lady! She has it all: sweetness, spirit of adventure, humbleness, good looking, love for simplicity. She's an angel!!!
I’m amazed how you mastered that passage with the navigation tools you had. Your calm demeanor is an inspiration to all. It gives me hope. Thank you!!!
agreed! amazing!
Wayne I love her compass totally dig it , the whole boat has had many journeys i would say , the deck lovely old wood , the mast and boom wow , the sails not much life left in them I don’t think , Awesome boat love it, if it could talk , I would love to hear it’s stories .
My time for adventure and sailing is gone. Whether I wanted it or not, the passion remained unchanged, just like in the times when it was enough for a guy from our entourage to come up with an idea, and the rest of us, without even a minute to think, jumped to make it happen however impossible and crazy that idea may seem. Dear Kiana, in November on the 24th I will be 65 years old and I can say that until now, I have met very few people as true and with such a strong character as yours. Kiana, without a doubt, the video you posted is an inspiration to all young people of your age and not only. It is strong and sensitive, true and dreamy, and last but not least, balm for the soul. All at the same time. It is the truest of all the navigation videos posted by CZcamsrs and seen by me so far. Thank you, stay as you are, never change! Fair winds and following seas, ma'am, always!
Dude! Why too old, DO IT!
I did at seventy and at 75still doing it so go for it
Sven Yrvind is still getting after it at 84!
You aren't too old, just go sailing.
You can do it even if you don't own a boat: There're boat clubs, and OPB (Other People's Boat) as well as racing (regattas) you can participate in on OPB or a boat club's boat
Kiana, this was an amazing video you made in sailing from Canary Islands. Very enjoyable to me. I'm most impressed with the fact that your NOT on a $500,000 yacht. Your sailing a pretty old vessel it appears. Your charm, bravery, and determination is truly the grit you have to be alone and do your thing here. I give you 👍up for safety on the seas and to fulfill your dreams. I'll be watching for more. Cheers. ⛵️
Thank you so much! I would never be able to afford sailing any other way 😅
@@kianaweltzien4469 you are rich in so many other ways!
I think James and Hanneke would be proud. So much of the Wharram philosophy toward sailing is evident here, working with the sea instead of against it. Lovely video, safe travels for the future.
Essa mulher é muito guerreira merece muito o respeito de todos...
So clear, so pure! Thank you❣
What a lovely sail! Is anyone else mesmerized by the sky at 18:27 ??
Finally, a sailor that doesn't drama everything up. Yes, some people experience hardship a sea, but it seems like a lot of CZcams sailors live for the drama not for the sailing.
Thank you Kiana for bringing us along :)
Once again over the Atlantic with you as captain 🙂 Still a wonderful sail and I enjoyed every minute
The music, purity, naturalness, humbleness...it is so inspiring. Congratulations for having decided to follow your dreams and share them with us. Take care and keep going!
wow, this is an amazing video. I think this might be my favorite ocean crossing youtube video. firstly the vibe is amazing. the boat is fascinating! there is so much rustic unfinished wood. the mast and boom appear to be whole trees. the main sail look like it's made from a discarded jib, I can see the UV wear strip on it. And there is even a little shack with a tin roof (and solar panel) on deck!
but also the way you express the emotional journey of the trip is unlike any other sailing video I've seen on this site. so raw and authentic.
Thank you so much for such kind words and I’m so happy this video evoked all of those emotions for you!!!!
@@kianaweltzien4469 thank you for making it! I realized that what I am really want when I read or watch a sailing story is I want to see people taken to the edge. That could mean the edge of their ability or to be with nature. It probably means both fear and joy. It's an inner journey as well as an outer journey.
Kiana, you are a real She of the Sea, a website created by Jenny Matthews from New Zealand. Good luck. Enjoy our beautiful Ocean Planet.
Down to Earth :) Awesome :)
Amazing how you could carry around that heavy outboard, nice video
Such a wonderful video! Thanks for making and sharing!
Just so chilled and wonderful... I really loved your videos. Thank you for sharing them with us. They show another world in such a beautiful way!
Bloody marvelous!
Well done you and thanks for allowing us all to sneek a peek into your wonderful adventure.
Dear Kiana
I used to sail a lot on the Adriatic, it's a small sea compared to the oceans.
There are also Adriatic winds of 70 knots, and because of the many islands there is shelter, but it can also be dangerous.
I was not lucky enough to meet a Lady like you who enjoys modest and small things. God willing, I will soon set sail in this way myself, but on a trip around the world.
I know Wharram catamarans well, I built a Tiki 31 when I was twenty, but because of the war in Croatia in the nineties, it was destroyed and afterwards there were never enough dollars to rebuild it.
I'm one of those who could sail with a woman like you and only occasionally stop by land.
I wish you a calm sea, lots of happiness and a kindred spirit with whom you will brighten up these moments of solitude, happiness and sadness.
Dubravko.
Thank you for sharing your experience in such a well produced video
Girl you are such an inspiration! Happy New Year to you and wishing you all the most beautiful!
Wonderful, inspiring and amazing, thx for sharing and taking the time to put this together!
WOW! What an amazing trip and solo too. Glad you made it safely.👍
I hope you keep sharing your adventures, great work 👍🏼
The spirit of adventure on display. You are amazing.
Amazing, thank you 😊
Awesome journey! Thank you for sharing! Fair winds always!
Thank you. What an amazing journey, and so incredibly well captured. I feel overwhelmingly inspired by your strength, and honestly a little envious!
Wonderful video you put together. You managed to capture the sea's beauty and bring us along on the experience!
Wow! Captivating. And I’ve never seen such perfect weather in on a crossing. Thanks for showing us your journey.
Thank you. What an inspiration you are. Looking forward to your videos.
Quite possibly one of the finest sailing videos I have seen. A landlubber like me comes to see sailing videos to experience the romance of the sea, to live vicariously through those who have been more fortunate or braver to leave land behind. Often, sailing videos focus on the technology, on wind vanes and route plotting software and the latest doodads on board, but this video is different. Simple, beautiful, with absolutely lovely music, it struck a chord with me like no other. Well done, and may you always have fair winds and following seas. And thanks for sharing your adventure and allowing us to come along. 🙏🏾
😄😄
Best sailing video I've seen yet, and looking forward to others. Great job!
absolutely fantastic !
No word ! Yes, two. Absolutely fantastic. Well done, mate!
Wow! Just found your channel and love it. So so inspirational! Please keep posting content!!
Just amazing and inspirational! Good on you!
Very beautiful adventure, also the video brings a genuine message, I felt many of the things not said. Thanks for sharing!
Way to go Kiana! You definitely win, thanks for sharing your adventure!
I was initially speechless while watching your video in amazement! Once in a while the world offers up a treasure like this. You and your journey is an absolute gem!! My congratulations on your successful solo adventure that has touched me in an unexpected way. My best wishes to you in the future young lady. Fair winds and happiness!
Thank you SO MUCH for your kind words! I would have never expected this video to have such an impact...
@@kianaweltzien4469 You're most welcome! It comes as no shock to me that you are surprised about the attention you got...that's exactly why you are so deserving of all the praise!
@@HuldraX. I've made the Guadalupe trip twice with you. Count the back button freeze time, about 3 x's. I read all comments, like all those men I am captive of your light & breezy self, enchanted in your romance. Wanting your next journey to have a 1st mate for peace of mind, sound sleep for hours.
Love your vid Kiana . May there be soft winds in your sails and clear skies .
Thank you. You have inspired a lot of people in taking a chance with life.
I just spent the day once againdigging rot out of my old Tangaroa and came home feeling a little despondent, and then stumbled across this video and now I’m inspired again! Amazing voyage, you are a natural and your love for what you are doing is so beautifuly apparent. Hope to see you out there some day. Thank you :)
This is one of the most inspiring video's I have ever seen on CZcams !!!
I love your videos, they’re so real and they actually make everything else look like high drama…..you also seem so relaxed and confident about what you’re doing & where you are. I thought it was very “telling” that you were more concerned about whether the other boat got your wishes for a good trip, than you were about your radio going out!!
You are truly impressive!
Thank you for sharing
YOU are So inspiring! I just signed up to crew at a local harbor to learn how to sail! Thank you! 🥰
Just watched your CZcams video of crossing the Atlantic. Lovely video, really enjoyed your sailing adventure and really love your boat, makes a change to see someone cross an ocean in a simple sailing craft. Its also great to see young women achieving these solo adventures, congratulations on your achievement.
Wow. Great stuff. First time on your channel. Perfect soundtrack, and biggest adventure. Living vicariously through you. You are very brave. Blessings
Excellent video, enjoyed the ocean action and your encouragement for others to just get out there and do it.
Cheers from New Zealand.
Thanks for this. I used to have this kind of emotions whole crossing mountains alone, for weeks. And you just made me realise that the sea can offer precisely the same thing. Food for thought. And respect to you.
Only watched 12 minutes so far. Extraordinary! Well done. Beautiful filming! ⛵️
Amazing! Loved every bit of the daring adventure
Kiana, exemplo de coragem e liberdade.
Muita felicidade e muita proteção pra você.
De Curitiba , PR, Brasil.
Your video just popped up in my feed. What an amazing woman. Such a casual approach, like" I think I will cross the Atlantic today", just wow, and solo too. What an experience and amazing journey it must have been. That boat looks so old and rickety but obviously capable of such a voyage.
This is amazing, I admire the courage to cross the Atlantic solo in your Wharram.
Amazing video! You can instantly tell when someones expressing straight from the heart. Keep inspiring people to follow their dreams 🧚🏻♂
You are sooo special! This is by far my favourite video on the whole you tube! Love your energies
I love your calm peaceful way of presenting your content. It is anything but boring. Your pleasing editing draws me into your passage. It’s as if I’m traveling with you. Your style is so calming. I just discovered your channel and look forward to more hours of viewing. Wharram cats are by far the simplest and most economical passage makers. I love them.
Your calm and attitude are unique. What a nice way to let us enjoy your journey. I was living on and sailing for 11 years on my own boat. I am too old now for this fun. Thank you, and all the best
How brave is she... following her dreams! respect, thanks for sharing
Beautiful video and a beautiful boat. Thank you. Good message at the end. You are right, doors open. I'm living in a tent motorcycling South America after crossing the Atlantic. I've had nothing but good experiences.
Just stumbled over your video, and what a gem it is. Thanks for bringing us over the Atlantic with you. Best wishes on the rest of your journey through life.
Thank YOU so much
This is a crazy adventure, unlike any other I have seen on CZcams. That you did this by yourself on a rustic homemade boat is very unusual. Your filming, editing, choice of music is spot on. Good luck on your future travels. I am looking forward to tuning in.
Thanks so much for making this beautiful little film! Really brightened my day!
Thank you Kiana from Greece. I hope to see more of you and your sailing. Absolutely wonderful.
I love the way you make it look so casual as if you just decided you are going sailing. To me it's obvious your experience at sea and I identify with you for keeping it simple, minimum amount of electronic instruments, electric devices and engines. And the skills to build and repair stuff as needed while navigating your craft across an ocean. Modest, humble and clever. Keep it up, and pass it on.
Thanks for sharing
I'm in love! I remember your Wharram from Corralejo, while being at achor there myself, right before covid. Somehow I came across this video, and I am very impressed by your courage and spirit. This spring I hope to be sailing again myself after a very long overhaul, and videos like this help a lot to keep me going. So thanks!
Hey Kiana, that was beautiful..
I live on my sailboat also with my little pup Benji, and you’re video has inspired me to do more big crossings solo.. so thankyou 🙏
Fair winds and with luck we’ll cross paths one day ☺️⛵️🐬
Priceless
Kiana you are so inspiring!!!! beautiful and a wandering soul... such an amazing film thank you... restored my own dreams of building or buying a warram and just heading out beyond the horizon into the wild blue ocean... Sail on lovely lady sail on
Wow!! You're a legend! I first learned about you from Paul Trammell's podcast. I loved watching this video and look forward to watching your other ones. I 100% agree with your sentiments at the end of the video. I've been grinding away on my boat for the last year and a bit. It is taking forever, but I so look forward to getting out there and sailing. I hope we cross paths out there on the big blue. Fair winds Kiana!
I just couldn’t stop watching! This was an incredible video.
Best sailing movie on CZcams. Keep making them. I never comment on CZcams stuff but this one really struck me...amazing.
YESSSS!!! LOVED THIS!!!! So perfect!! Most of the women sailing on youtube are part of a duos or as eyecandy crew on mens' boats...and even though those are all fun to watch, too...your beautiful video was such a refreshing respite from the heavily edited content-for-content sailing vids. You're just IN your adventures! Your two videos are very special and your words at the end of this one, so inspirational!! I really needed to see and hear this today!! Thank you for sharing and safe travels to your next adventures!! ❤❤❤
I'm so thrilled and impressed with your journey and how brave you're! So connected to yourself, to your boat, to the sea and nature. What an inspiring young women you're. Please keep taking us with you to all those beautiful places and experience. Bons ventos 🇧🇷
... wow kiana ... the positivity you can transmit is simply... mind-blowingly-amazing, thanks for sharing this
I loved your video and subscribed. I look forward to many more.
I just loved watching this . I love that you're just so into being out there. You do it so simply and you film it in such a beautiful way that it captures the essence of the trip, of the movement from one side of the ocean to the other. And what a woman! Good on you, you're an inspiration ! Finally I loved seeing a gaff rig on CZcams, only way to go! Keep on filming girl, you're so good!
Thank you so much Alistair!
Absolutely brilliant, beautiful adventure! Thank you so much for sharing. I’m getting my boat together as we speak .... and you are quite ol the inspiration. 🙏❤️🧘🏽♂️
Yeaaaah! Fear winds to you!
Hello Kiana, what an exiting adventure ! Nice quality film, you have a lot of courage!
I was watching another sailing video and decided it was time I watched yours (yet) again. As joyful, inspirational, and soul heartening as ever. Thanks once again. (And a great reminder of simple things can be on a boat if you chose to make it that way).
It was a pure joy watching your sailing Adventure 😍😍
Thank you honey
Your one of my heroes as a women solo sailor. I only discovered sailing in my fifty’s with my hubby. If I had discovered it before I got married I definitely would of been a solo sailor.
Bravo 👏
I'm blown away. What a crazy / amazing / beautiful journey. As others have said in the comments - this is pure, unadulterated adventure that's about as raw as it gets. I sincerely wish you the best on all of your future journeys!!
It's been four years since I'm back on land... but after watching your little film... I think I started to realize what I miss so much and why I at home I don't feel like home. So I must wish you fair winds... and a big thank you for waking up that desire to go back at sea... where I belong. Absolutely amazing... both the little film and also your adventure. You made me feel like I was out at sea again.
P.S. Funny that all sailing adventures start in Miami )) I was anchored for two years in front of the Flamingo building at the end of Lincoln Road.
Love your spirit. Keep going and keep filming.
One of the best sailing videos I’ve seen on CZcams! Thanks for taking us along and sharing your positivity and sunsets. Epic. I dream of/focus on coastal cruising but this makes me think the wide open ocean looks ok.
There's nothing like the wide open ocean.... the routine, the flow, the impermanence... Sending you fair winds! Thanks for your kind words.
It was a huge relief watching this, a journey I wish I can experience on a self made sailboat, i dont know nothing about sailing nor boat building, i dont know how this dream got into my head, and dont know how to make it come true.
Thanks for sharing, the video made me huge motivation, because i think it is most scary thing a human being can do, to cross an ocean.
I wish i can do it,just to have much time to write a book about the struggle in my head, the feelings, the ideas, the artistic busy brain o'mine... being in the middle of the ocean can trigger something in me to make some good arts.
Again, thanks for sharing!
What an inspiring video. Just beautiful and also a reminder of what an elemental force of nature the sea is. Thank you Kiana. I've been following Wilding sailing, which I love, I guess I now have two channels to follow!
This is the most REAL Atlantic crossing I have seen, and the mos human. Thanks a lot by sharing it. I hope you will continue with your adventures with that solid "machine" that a Wharram cat is, and don't forget to make us know about them. Good luck,
"It's not the destination... its the journey!"
This video encapsulates that ethos perfectly. Kiana, you are one of a kind, inspiring, authentic, beautiful and brave. I can't wait for your documentary. Congratulations on all you have achieved, and for all that you will achieve I wish you fair winds and following seas! Take care.
CZcams has certainly opened up my world to some wonderful people, you young lady are well beyond wonderful. You're a rarity, love every single thing about your channel! You've most definitely hit the top spot for my CZcams sailing channel!
This could be one of the less words video ,onestly made , with sincere emotions I have ever seen . you made a piece of art , thank you .
Great video! Really gives you the feel of being out on the ocean. I’ve done many singlehanded passages, and there’s something different, and incredibly peaceful, about being out there by yourself.
That something is now something I can't live without...
Well done on an epic adventure. Story well told. You will inspire many more to follow in your footsteps I'm sure.
I too am a wharram owner (Tiki 26). Love wharrams!!!!
Dear Kiana, amazing video of the crossing, kudos on all your adventure, love to see more of your journey and your style of videos, very laidback and calm..Thank you and stay safe.
I grew up on an island and I spent the last decade at sea as merchant mariner; this video makes my heart yearn and ache in all the ways that make the human experience beautiful - Thank you so much for sharing!
