Great tip! Thank you much!
Yep works great, I use a laundry detergent bottle.
I need to remember not to toss them! @@zeromark202
Laundry detergent or fabric softener bottle
I use a clear ketchup squirt bottle
Nice idea! There’s several ways of measuring and this one certainly is valid!👍
Thank you for watching and taking the time to share. Means lots to my family and I so thank you again!
Good idea on opening the zip tie bags
Thanks Dave! I trully have never had a bag split like that one did! Of course, it was when I was filming!
Nice mate I like the added coloured tabs good idea 👍
Thank you much. Definitely a dab of hot glue/silicone/gorilla glue to hold them in place will be a good idea. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Great idea for opening the zip ties
Good idea! Thank you
I like your addition to Chris’s of adding the colors for different lengths. I really enjoyed your recent trip to Brock’s place. Will we be seeing footage from Kansas on this channel? Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Hey, much appreciated! It was a very busy and great day for sure. There will be some footage coming out a little later. I am a tad backed up with footage and let me tell you, that is a good problem to have!
Chris likes to tape his on so it doesn't move. I like mine to rotate out of the way. You'll get better with it the more you use it.
Well, I appreciate you watching and letting me know it will get better. I was kind of excited and then I watching myself using it while editing and thought, wow, I look like someone trying to throw a ball for the first time ever with their non dominant hand! Thank you again for being here and commenting!
I don’t tape the zip ties for same reason, fold them in when storing the saws. Never had them slip down, have broken them before though.
dang! All those UV rays makin em brittle huh!? @@zeromark202
Nah broke the cheapos, since bought big heavy duty ones and haven’t broke.
👍👍good idea!
Thanks CF. I think it will work out well once I get my routine down.
Always good to watch a pro work 😊.
Sarcasm or not, thanks for watching!
I always just knipped corner off bag, I like ur way better OW..
Thank you buddy! You are the first to mention this tip and I sure think it is a good one myself. This really helps out keeping them in one place for sure. Appreciate you lettin me know
Learned the zip tie dispensing tip a year or so ago, way better than chasing them down whenever you need one! Being able to unlock and reuse zip ties can come in real handy in some circumstances😉 great tip for measuring firewood👍🏻 heard of using them to measure, just never seen how it's done.
Thanks AP! I figured I would just use a variation of what I have seen. I will likely be making some modifications to this but I think this is a good start for sure!
Neighbor Joe,. Great video
You are correct on the $20 magnetic firewood marker. Just save your money.
Joe I have never seen that ziptie trick. Wow why have I never thought of that. Great idea and thanks for sharing it with all of us
excellent sir! Glad I brought something to ya. Personally, I think the bag trick may be the best part of the video. I am VERY fond of that way of doing it!
I just watched the "In the Woodyard" version #436 of this, and he uses 3 zip ties cut for a 16" cut. He uses electrical tape to create a stiff collar on the handle end of them, & pink tape to make the ends stick out. Three of them make it more obvious for making fast cuts. The reason I would go this route is you don't go down the log & mark it. You just cut away @ 16" each time. That's where you save yourself time & still make faster cuts. My only reservation with his style of zip ties for my situation - I like to use my chainsaw cases when I am hauling my saws around. I can't access any of my property with a pickup truck, and I use the cases for my ATV & UTV. My saws look good for their age thanks to them, too. His method of attaching the zip ties would not work for saws being stored in a case. Like you - I am still brainstorming! 🙂
Thanks for finding the episode number there for me and others. I would certainly want to not have them mounted rigidly on the handle for numerous reasons. You use the hard plastic cases then huh? You know, I have a Stihl one and was going to get rid of it on market place but may be acquiring a larger Stihl saw here in a bit. May be a good thing to keep around for that saw alone. Thanks for bringing it up sir. This is a good conversation!
Ya the magnet is just another thing to lose in the woods. I like my 16" zip tie. I was wondering if your bar came loose on the up cut causing the chain to derail.
I am wondering that as well. Because I had just changed the dogs out. Now, I believe I would have noticed when I put the chain back on. I cannot recall at this point. Thanks Kenny!
Niiiice!
Thank you for watching. Appreciate you being here!
I use my bar for doing quality control when cutting 16" firewood. I do like the zip tie method with a piece of white tape on the end at 16"
Awesome! Thanks for watching and letting me know!
I have seen other people do this, but for some reason you might’ve inspired me to try it 😂. I do have those cheap magnet ones. They are pain in the butt constantly setting it down somewhere almost stepping on it or you can’t find it when you need it this is a pretty basic solution to a problem 👍
Awesome Tom! Thanks for the feedback on that. I figured that is what would happen to me. I would set it down and step on it or something. This is new to me as well but I am going to give it a shot!
Gonna try this, i like mine at 12 and 18 and i usually get 10-20 lol
We are in the same boat! Let me know how it goes. I haven't got to use it much yet but I look forward to seeing how it works in the long run. Thank you
I used a heavy duty zip tie on the handle it’s what I had it worked
Thanks for watching and sharing! Stay safe and glad to have you!
for sure improvement on a good idea!Like your videos Joe keeping it real
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. It is appreciated for sure!
I have a hole drilled in handle the the zip tie threw keeps it from sliding down while cutting cedar. I cut oak and ash as I cut a stand of cedar. Today probably a cord of oak and 150 cedar post. That's a normal day take the leaner oak and ash as I go. Spit that stuff in the woods. No bark to kleen and the waisted time hauling logs. Just blocked the hardwood today probably split Friday and push brush
Awesome information! Love hearing from guys like you out in the field day in and day out. Be safe and appreciate your watching and commenting
Awesome bro!!
Thanks for the shoutout, I got the Husky cap idea from FB group, just like zip ties from ‘In The Woodyard’ it’s not stealing it’s just good ideas and people sharing.
Firewood is all about production speed, I love the zip tie method the measurement device is always there ready when I need it and less touching another tool and making another step. Is it the most accurate idk but fast and works. Have used lumber pieces cut to 16” before then for measuring, I still keep a 16” cut scrap piece of lumber where my splitter if I need to double check a log that maybe got off. I have the zip ties on every saw I own.
I was thinking about putting ties on en all! Glad to know you have done that. I was kinda feeling a bit strange about it but no longer do! Well...... since the 562 is going back in the shop, we can skip that one for now! hahaha
Not again, geeze
I used to use the zip ties, but i found that i get too sloppy with my cuts, its cheap and 100% works.
I'll be the odd one out in the comments here, i love my perfect stick. Its made my lengths literary perfect since using it. Yeah its something else to buy, or set down and pick up, but i slam it in my back pocket and rock out.
I do like your addition of the different lengths, thats really cool idea. How about this, keep the tails on, of the different measurements, and then use the tails as a guide facing forward 🤷♂️ that might get in the way more, but worth a try?
Great video and cheers ✌️
Oh and killer tip for the zip tie bag opening, I'm gonna have to use that next time i get a bag💪
That the "Perfect Stick" Durable? I have never seen that particular one before. I just found em on facebook and they had an etsy link. Looks 3d printed. Is the shaft fiberglass or something? Thank you buddy!
I entertained the tails staying on for a minute but I really want this thing to fold up out of the way cleanly. However, the ties may be coming off eventually for something like the perfect stick!
Nice idea!🙏🏿🇺🇸🪓
Thanks!
I like your idea of the zip ties Honestly never even thought about that I always just guess it but like that idea an also love seeing the 620 singing in the wood
Awesome! Hopefully you can take this idea and make it your own idea. That is what I have done. Simple variations till you get it right. Have a good one and thanks for watching
@oakiewoodsman yes sir you got that right an have a good as well
Harbor Freight sells a 50 mm Round Magnet, which holds 25 pounds for under $5. It has a hole in the center of it, which makes it perfect to attach a 16" or whatever size wooden dowel with a single screw. If I am bucking firewood, I slip my magnetic measuring rod in my rear pocket. I usually have a plastic wedge in the other rear pocket, when I am concerned about pinching my bar. I see advantages to the bungee ties, but a measuring rod attached directly to the bar probably measures more precisely. I also like that I can attach it to either side of my bar. I don't have to be facing the log a certain way. Once I make my chainsaw marks, I slip the rod back into my rear pocket. The 25 pound holding force holds it in place just fine for this. My magnetic measuring rod has become part of firewood cutting equipment, just like plastic wedges & a small sledgehammer. I buck all my firewood wherever the tree may fall, because I don't have large equipment to haul logs out. Slipping on a magnetic measuring rod onto any chainsaw bar seems easier than lugging around a small chainsaw just to mark logs for bucking. I'd rather use a 16" stick & a large chunk of chalk to mark my spots than do that. I'm not saying my way is better, but making a magnetic measuring rod didn't cost me much. I'm sure I stole the idea from someone else on CZcams, too.
You are correct for sure. That magnet is why I ended up at HF i just didn't like it when I saw it. I am still thinking on it and believe I may try some sort of variation on this yet still. I want to be efficient and this zip tie thing is nice in a way but also requires bending over which I would rather not do.
Hey Oakie, I've watched other vids with the various measuring systems and the zip ties seemed the cheapest and most effective as you can measure the cut & buck the log all in 1 shot without having to make 2 passes down the log....
That is what I want to do ultimately. I have never really wanted to do this method because it makes you bend over in lots of circumstances. We will see however! I think I may have another trick up my sleeve though
I hook my zip ties to a quick release clamp that I can pop on and off my saw in seconds.
That sounds like a cool idea. Is there a way you can email me a picture of that? Super cool to see how everyone does things!
I investwd in a prosizer laser measuring tool. It works good but kinda pricey. I made my own laser measurer after and it cost me under 30 CAD
seems like an interesting option for sure. I would have to have the green laser though for visibility. That may very well be the best option, but like you said, a bit pricey! Thank you!
I might have to try zip tie setup too!!
Worth a shot!
I just measure a stick and my Husky dealer has log chalk like 25 cents apiece and I go down the whole log and mark it then cut it.
that may very well be what I do next! Lets c! Thanks Ted
I told you about this trick months ago 😂. I just use a paint marker. Black zip tie cut to 16, and i used a yellow paint marker to mark the last inch just so it's easy to see. I do agree those little ties will probably slide.if they want 14, I overhang the 16 by 2 inches. If they want 18, I under hang it by 2 inches. I did it for sales also. I'll burn whatever, but the Bible says that unequal weight and measures are an abomination to YHWH. So when I sell it, everything is exactly 16 (or very close), and we use 4ft by 4ft skid boxes to make sure everyone gets exactly the same. Just a little over a face chord. 10 pieces or so. Also, if you find you're throwing chains more, or you're getting jammed up with chips when you're noodling logs, take off your factory echo chain catch. I found that having 2 chain catches caused the chips to get stuck when noodling, and they'd jam up the chain. Just something I learned.
I remember you saying something but I believe my colored ties was my "unique" idea. I dunno. I may end up cutting this one to 16 because I really don't think I have a need to cut at 18. I do have one guy that likes them there and another at 24. We will see how it works out.
Great tip on the extra chain catch. I was wondering if it would be an issue somehow. I am kinda afraid to pull another bolt out of the case after my last experience though. OH well..
@oakiewoodsman yeah I don't blame you on the chain catch thing. If it was me, I'd have that on a dealer bench, or at least call them and tell them. That's unacceptable in my mind. I'd expect something like that from stihl, not echo. That's not echo quality, and I'd bet you get a free repair.
Yes, I have never seen anyone use color coded zip ties, so you're probably right on that part. You're obviously much crafter than I am 😆
I wonder how they would handle it. It would suck cause my saw is base gasket deleted and all that. They may not want to touch it now! I bet their option would be a new short block. But who knows. Thanks man!
@oakiewoodsman they can only void warranty if they can prove the mods caused it. Your saw being ported has nothing to do with the screws in the bottom end. Porting and deleting a base gasket is got nothing to do with the crank case really. It's the same as warranty on like a needle bearing or clutch. I'd be amazed if they voided warranty for that and if they did I'd go over and above their head and call a rep, and remind the rep of how many echo products you have.
I just put a sharpie mark on my bar
May be a good idea! I have done it before. Thought I would try something new!
@@oakiewoodsman Your idea is I think easier on the wrist. With the sharpie mark you have to lay the saw along the log, so that's potentially a wasted movement.
We will see! Certainly not optimal in a wood pile with a long bar!
Only mark 1 then cut it!
Will do! Makes perfect sense and I appreciate you watching and commenting!
I've seen this zip tie trick somewhere else too. I have one saw set up with a zip tie, it does help and isnt in the way.
I dont waste time and effort marking the logs, I simply cut from left to right and line the zip tie up with the end of the log.
You fell for the youtuber set up bs with your 620, you're not falling trees on a hill side you dont need a full wrap or big dogs.
Put the stock stuff back on the saw with a 20 inch bar and it'll be a lot nicer for fire wood, a bunch of pro saws are sold with smooth dogs in my area as they work best blocking up fire wood.
You are right about doing it in a single pass. As I was reviewing footage, i thought, why am I doing it that way?!! OH well. I will be making some changes and I sure appreciate the feedback. Have a great one and thanks for being here!
Hus-ka-varna... :)
Thanks for watching!
Why not just cut a 2x3 to 16 inches and some colored chalk cheap simple but whatever method is good unless you have a magically accurate eye which I definitely don’t 😉
That may very well be a good option. I just have a tendency to set stuff down and loose it! hahaha.. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@oakiewoodsman yep i hear you i misplace everything 🫤
