    I ordered a Woodpeckers square made from G10 as I sometimes drop my tools on the concrete floor. I had given these a look but the poor markings of the square gave me poor thought of these tools. I have ordered a new European style disc marking gauge from BangGood that should arrive at the end of the month. It looks well made and I shall see.

  • @kklogins
    @kklogins Před 2 lety +8

    you should use a white permanent marker to fill in the engraved squares, then immediately wipe away the excess paint with a clean finger or use alcohol and a cloth after it has dried up. Your eyes will thank you for it.
    while a pre-painted tool might scratch up and lose it's paint over time, an engraved tool has the benefit of just needing a little patch up work. to me personally most of the time I prefer the latter option as it gives me more confidence in the longevity of unbranded products.

    Thanks for the great review. I've leant from experience that for making these combination squares, machining accuracy is one thing, using adequate materials is another. Aluminum and plastic squares are never reliable no matter how precise they look when new. The tiny keys inside the blade slot will wear out quickly causing big errors. So if you want reliability, the square frame has to be forged or at least casted iron. Of course if the machining is precise, it's a bonus.

  • @Mike--K
    @Mike--K Před 2 lety

    Another great video! I agree that the combination square set should be accurate out of the box, but these are manufactured (or should be) to allow adjustments later. The scale does not sit flat in the cast iron housing, but rides on two tabs on both sides of the clamping screw. When the scale is no longer square with the housing, it is possible to remove small amounts of material from one of the tabs with a jeweler's file until the scale is square again. It is "file a bit and check" effort, but this has worked on all of the inexpensive combination squares I've used.

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  Před 2 lety +1

      I get the idea. But this set had too much failures. But I agree some adjustments is possible.

    I'm a new subscriber to your channel and I'm really enjoying your comparison videos of the China tools. HOWEVER, I've spent a lot of time watching and waiting to see any tools that come in Imperial measurement and haven't seen anything yet! I'm a new woodworker looking to step up from the Home center measuring tools, but I don't want to spend Woodpecker $$$. Do any of the China tools come in Imperial for us folks who are still inching along?! ;-)

    • @HookedonWood

    The squares I use are from scala. They're the squares we sell at the store we work in. Most of the other brands I tested weren't really square,Stanley, bahco, wolfcraft. The only other one that actually was square is the Dewalt builders style combination square. That one seems perfect as a saw guide.

    I was just referred to your channel! Thanks for the in-depth reviews of these tools as I've been thinking about buying some of these kinds of tools as I'm starting out and don't want to pay the high price of the woodpeckers.
    One thing I wanted to mention as I'm guessing probably nobody else that watches this channel will have noticed :), as an audio engineer, listening on my studio headphones there's a low frequency bass noise present in your shop while you're talking (you can tell as when you give the score card or pause the video it stops). I'm guessing it's an Air Conditioner unit running? It's super easy to filter out when you're editing your video with a High-pass filter set either 60 to 80 hz (I haven't run it through a spectrograph to confirm). High-pass meaning all frequencies above the set point will be allowed to pass :D Anyways, small suggestion, love the videos and thanks so much for making them!!

  • @peterprowse8932
    @peterprowse8932 Před 2 lety +1

    Hi Dennis. I always enjoy watching your videos and have learnt a lot. I purchased the combination square based on your recommendation but mine is massively out of square making it useless. There is no way to make any adjustment to correct it. I can see from the comments that other viewers have had similar quality control problems with this item. I have purchased many items from Banggood which up to now have been OK. I contacted Banggood and they have asked me to supply information which was on the packaging which was thrown away when the goods arrived. Seems like they don't want to take any responsibility for dealing with the problem. So I can't even give this a 1 Star recommendation and would warn anyone considering buying this item.

      @HookedonWood  Před 2 lety

      I am sorry to hear this Peter.
      I heard more complains about this combination square, which is a shame. For what it is worth I also sent a email to Banggood about this product. I think I will change my recommendation in the description of the video. Thanks for letting me know.

  • @paul9532
    @paul9532 Před 5 měsíci

    You can actually adjust the squareness of combination squares by removing some material on 1 side of the clamping mechanism. The ruler is pulled against 2 raised parts on either side. If it is less than 90 degrees remove some material of the strip closest to the inside if it is more than 90 degrees remove some on the outside strip.
    Edit: of course you would want it to be square from the beginning, but that is exactly why most Chinese stuff is cheap, lack of or very little quality control.

    Hi Dennis, with the first square you showed, I have a concern, regarding the it being aluminium and stainless steel. I feel like over time, with lots of use the head will wear and it lose its 'squareness' but for $20 its cheap just my 5cents. 🤷‍♂️

  • @GraemePayne1967Marine
    @GraemePayne1967Marine Před 2 lety

    The first combination square, but it does have a latent failure mode. ANY combination square made with an aluminum (or other soft metal) body and has s steel ruler blade will have this problem. Continual use of moving the soft metal body along a steel rule will cause wear of the raised areas within the body. These raised areas are what holds the the rule square to the body when the clamp screw is tight. Wear changes their height which in turn changes the angle. It is always preferable to have this or similar tool made with rule and body materials of similar hardness. Like cast iron body and a steel rule.

    • @HookedonWood
      @HookedonWood  Před 2 lety

      sounds logical. I have to say that it is completely flat from inside. So it does not have two points the ruler is leaning on. Luckily the ruler is clean and does not have burs. But I can understand what you say. But, I do not think this will happen very quick.

Too much clutter when trying to make to much functions into one tool, especially when there are other affordable tools that do specialist tasks better. A Starrett is a Starrett, you’ll look hard to find a set that competes. There are som that do, but I don’t regret buying Starrett.

    Dennis I am admittedly not a heavy buyer from China. I have noticed that you get products from different manufacturers in China. Sometimes its supposed to be the same product ( squares/levels/pencils/etc.) but manufactured by different companies within China. One maker I notice more times than not is "Drillpro". It appears to make better quality products by your recommendations. Not so for some of the other products in this review. Could you spend a little time talking about those different Chinese manufacturers that appear to give consistently reliable quality products in your experience? (Not just this review has brought this thought to mind.)

    Thanks for another great review. I've bought a few of your top rated tools over the past few weeks and all have been of very high quality. However, I have just received the aluminium set square and unfortunately it is of very poor quality. The mechanism and block is OK but the ruler is very crudely made - it is curved and the edges are very rough which is very noticeable at each end and I wouldn't trust the reliability of the scale as a result. Other people have also rated it highly so I suspect it's either a poor batch or just poor quality control at the factory.

      Did you use one of my links or is it perhaps another item that looks like it? I would contact Banggood. I know that this is not always easy, but I also know that in the end, they find a solution.

      @@HookedonWood Thanks for the reply Denis. I did use your link so I got the tool you reviewed - the one with the black anodised finish and steel ruler. That black part seems fine and locks the ruler well. But the ruler itself is of terrible quality. I will contact them but don't expect much to happen. Another ruler might fit the mechanism. Thanks for the great videos and highlighting things available in places you wouldn't normally look. All the tools I've bought using your links have been of exceptional quality so I'm not too bothered about this - I just wanted to flag that the supplier might have changed and people aren't necessarily getting the same tool you received. 😊

    Bought the recommended aluminium combination square, anyone else having quality issues? After waitung several weeks because it was out of stock it arrived yesterday and is 1mm out of square at the far end of the ruler.
    I have bought many other items from Banggood and have always been very happy with them, this is the first issue I've encountered.

      I got mine some days ago and have the same problems. Flip-over test shows 1,75mm gap at a length of 260mm!!! By far not parallel! The ruler has a thickness of only 1,65mm (should be 2,0mm) and is therefor very weak, it was already slightly bent (was not flat). My small Starret has a 2,0x19mm ruler, this is much less of widht but it is much more stable. The base block is not flat, there is a small elevation running around the whole block (not milled or grinded before applying the colour). It is the same one Dennis tested because this video is linked in the description! Bad experience, let's wait for the reaction of Banggood....

      Well, I got the replacement square the day before. The base is of beeter quality, the ruler looks better but the angle is a DESASTER. It is much worse than the first one. The flip over test shows lines deviating by 3 mm (at 200mm length). The first square had "only" 1mm deviation.

    I have the Veiko T square and the Veiko 12 inch precision guaranteed square and I can tell you neither one is even close to being square. Bangood would not send me a new one of either square saying it was past the return date. They did manage to find 15 bucks to give me for my troubles. I trust you Dennis to give me honest information about these Bangood tools and that is why I bought these two. If I can't trust these tools to be square then what is the point of going to Bangood for ANYTHING? I finally broke down and bought a Woodpecker's 12 inch square - and it is square. It's what I used to confirm these Veiko squares are worthless paper weights. I took pictures and sent them to Bangood. Any idiot could see they were off by a mile. Not happy at all.

    I've bought a lot of tools off of Banggood, based on Dennis' recommendations, and I have to admit... I've not been impressed at all with these squares from Banggood.
    The customer support, of BangGood is horrible. I recently bought the 12" Veiko square and it is off. There are gaps, based on checking it with my feeler gauges and comparing it to my 857/00 knife edge square. I've sent pictures to BangGood and they wanted to give me $5 USD in BangGood credits for my inconvenience.
    $5 USD for the $42 I wasted on the square? What am I going to do with this square, besides throw it out? I definitely will not spend more of my hard earned money at their website, and I will definitely not go off of Dennis's reviews, especially for anything that I need to be accurate\precise.
    For the amount of money I've wasted, time, and headaches... I should have used the money to buy some Starrett combination squares as well as a few SS Woodpecker squares.
    Never again!
