Instead of changing a tradition why don't we simply expand it and paint the faces of every disbeliever and objector puke green? We are discussing a kids party-tradition here, has anyone who has a negative opinion on this ever discussed this with kids? Good explanation! I'm looking forward to explanations on "Suikerfeest", "Easter", "Christmas" , "Halloween", "All Saint's Day", "Thanksgiving". Need more suggestions?

The black face is for:
1. So the kids don't recognize the face of the neighbors
2. Because Sinterklaas has history in FREEING slaves who later offered to help him out of gratefulness.
3. Because tradition is tradition, you can say we need to change it, rather more than 90/100 people dont care or really wanna keep it. Because its the last bit of Dutch traditions we have. The people offended by it could be better off moving away from the Netherlands or dealing with it

Zijn wij dan verplicht om het uit te leggen "aan de hele wereld"? Er zijn zoveel landen in de wereld met tradities die leggen het ook niet uit aan de rest van de wereld. Volgens mij is het groter gemaakt dan dat het is nadat de VN zich in de discussie heeft gemengd. The only thing I learn from this sad discussion is that the world wants the Dutch to tell the world black people aren't welcome in December. Or that black people can't give presents or make kids happy. Seems like the wrong message to give to the future

This Black Pete symbol is an issue. It’s black face pure and simple. The curly hair made it even more so. It matters little to me regarding Gay marriage when this clearly racist practice persists today. There are many less racist ways to update this tradition.
Adding gays to the tradition of marriage was REMOVING discrimination. Removing the face paint as soot as was tradition to appease ignorant is not removing discrimination. Its adding to it. They are the the same sort of liberal event in the least and to compare them is disingenuous.
Adding gays(which is fine on all counts) did destroy "the tradition" because marriage is defined as a "traditional" union between a man and a woman.
