Who is Sinterklaas?

  • For Dutch people, december 5 is sacred: it's the day they celebrate Sinterklaas. He visits all children in Holland to give them presents if they have been good, accompanied by his black Petes. Where does this curious tradition come from?
Saint Nicolas was born around 300 AD in the Turkish port of Myra. The GREEK port of Myra at that time and Saint Nicolas wasn't a Saint by then, just Nicolas. He was a bit of a lad, because as a baby he stood up in his bath and thanked the Lord for his birth! Very chique-o-las.
As a priest Nicolas performed some remarkable acts. Once he saved three boys who had been cut into pieces by an innkeeper, and then stuffed into a barrel. Our Nico happened to pass by, did a little praying and the boys had no longer kicked the barrel but were once more alive and well. Thank you Sint Nicolas! He also showed his generosity to three poor little girls, by throwing bags of money into their bedroom in the dead of night. One of those baggies of cash got stuck in one of them bitches pumps and that's why we still put our shoes out at night, hoping for some dosh. Chocolate coins are accepted. No change given.
Nicolas was promoted to bishop of Myra, but died soon after on December 6th 342. This is when he was declared a good saint and then somehow he moved to Spain and spends his winters in The Netherlands. From Myra to Almere. The Lord works in mysterious ways.
