  • In Holland, Santa Claus is not as popular as Sinterklaas: an old man with a white beard in a red suit. Sounds familiar? That's because Santa Clause is actually a mix of both men.
Father Christmas is called Santa Claus in English. It sounds a bit like the Dutch Sinterklaas and that is no coincidence because Dutch immigrants bring their tradition with them to America in the 17th century. British immigrants have their own celebration with father Christmas a few days later and so the two party boys mix it up, creating Santa Claus...
A miracle! Over time we learn more and more of Santa's unique abilities. It appears he's able to squeeze his rotund figure through chimneys, to fill stockings with gifts. The first depiction of Santa appears in 1881 and 50 years later a well known soda manufacturer gives him a make-over.
Since then, jolly old saint Nick is as red as the soda can and as sweet as the beverage. In 1939 Rudolph makes his debut, the famous reindeer with the nose so bright. This helps Santa to guide his sleigh at night. Old Nick has only recently begun to visit good old Holland because he still faces stiff competition over here in the form of his older ego, the REAL Sinta Claes.

Thomas Nast drew him red, bishops historically have worn red. Want an expert analysis? William Federer shows the transition from Saint to Santa(same word) way more smoothly than this.
