This is the REAL Def Leppard - all testosterone and whiskey - before they started pouring sugar all over it. One of my ALL TIME favorite albums - EVERY SONG ON THIS ALBUM ROCKS. Listen to Saturday Night (Hi 'n Dry) and Lady Strange. Pure fire. This one goes to 11.
Amen brother - This is when I first discovered Def Leppard and in my opinion is their best album, followed closely by Pyromania - after that, everything pales in comparison. I loved it when Pyromania came out and my friends were saying "hey, have you heard this new band Def Leppard?" I'd just laugh and pull out High'N'Dry and blow their minds!! RIP Steamin' Steve Clark!!
Wonder how many of us 50 and older remember finding this album after Pyromania dominated the charts. I first heard High and Dry and thought how am I finding this now it should have been a huge hit. Those were the days its absurd the groups we could see in concert every weekend that are now legends and it was just another show. Rush, AC/DC, Def Leopard, Bon Jovi, Queen,Journey, Billy Joel, Motley Crew, Pat Benatar, REO Speed Wagon, Meatloaf, and that new group GnR.
For me, when I saw the video on MTV for Bringin’ on the Heartbreak that did it for me. I begged my mom to front me some allowance and take me to the record store. So I was a huge fan of this album before Pyromania hit. But yeah I rushed out and bought Pyromania on the first day it was released.
Lol. I actually found their debut On Through the Night cassette hidden in a clearance bin at a place called Record and Tape Traders for like 99 cents in 1981. I was hooked and I was only too happy to pay full price for High and Dry in 82.
This was the Def Leppard I fell in love with. Remember when the album came out, I wore the needle off the record player! Sure some of the later stuff got a little more radio friendly but underneath it all there is a sound that is all Def Leppard. It would be for the Pyromania album that I would see them in concert for the first time, and who were they opening up for, none other than Mr. Ozzy Osbourne himself. Not a bad gig for a bunch of teenaged kids breaking into the business.
Wow, I saw the same tour in Tampa!!!! They were my band and amazing, then Randy came out and changed my life. Agreed, this is still my favorite album of theirs. Raw edges
I have been begging for someone to do a reaction to Let it go by Def Leppard forever.... finally somebody did it Thank you for reacting to one of the greatest epic songs ever...early Leppard is the BEST....
I like the original "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" and I like that it segues into "Switch 625." The remixed version, which was recorded a couple of years later, doesn't segue into "Switch 625" however
This is the Def Leppard that I loved in 1981. I was almost 15 when the High N Dry album came out. I had already committed myself to Heavy Metal and this was what I wanted my band to be like, young, loud and testosterone driven. It's also cool to see Pete Willis.

One of my fav Def Lep tunes. Loved them in the early days. Sounded raw. Wasn't so much produced. It was like the album was recorded in a basement and was just pure
Def Leppard is my favorite band of all time, first heard it as a kid in my older cousins classic Camaro, full blast. I swear I got Tinnitus from it but didn't care. Good times, let it rock!
Their early sound is where it's at. They started to inject some pop on the next album Pyromania, but they still kept enough of the old. On Hysteria they went full pop and haven't looked back, although I don't dislike the album, most of it at least.
With all their albums post Pyromania, there are only a half dozen that kick ass like they did on "High and Dry" and "On Through The Night". Mutt Lange took over producing on Pyromania, and the move into pop rock was inevitable. Overproduction removed their raw power. It worked for them financially, but killed ma as a fan.
High N Dry was their best album by far. They have an instrumental on the album called "Switch 625", which was used at the end of the season 4 finale of Cobra Kai.
This was the first video that I ever saw of Def Leppard before they really hit it big. Bringin' On the Heartache and High 'n' Dry was from this same album. Pyromania came next and that's when they started getting more notice on MTV. Pete Willis (dark haired guitarist) was fired from the band after the High 'n' Dry album and that's when Phil Collen joined the band for Pyromania - Photograph, Foolin', Rock of Ages, Rock! Rock! 'Til You Drop, Too Late for Love
Actually Pete Willis is all over Pyromania, having recorded all the rhythm tracks before being let go. Phill came in and killed all the solos though. Definitely the better fir for the band in more ways than one.
Pete Willis!! Nuff said. I know what you mean J., the group's harmonies are untouched in this genre as far as I'm concerned, still gives me chills when I listen to this LP. One of the greatest rock albums of all time and their personal best in my eyes.
The late brilliant guitarist and songwriter Steve Clark. They have never been the same for me since he died. Will always grieve for him and the amazing talent that was lost that awful day, 8th January 1991. Never forgotten……
Brings back so many great memories. I bought tickets from a scalper to see this tour. They were the opening band for Blackfoot at the Santa Monica Civic
This here is Music! I think This was Def Leppard’s best album! Love every song on it! With Steve and Pete on board made it Better. The Big C means that 🤷🏻♀️. Does anyone else Love Mirror Mirror? Another great song! And Lady strange. A GREAT GROUP! ❤
So glad you are getting back to the Leps. I have seen them LIVE 10 times and will continue as long as they keep touring. They have never disappointed in putting on a great show.
Early Def Leppard like this is so much better than the more popular later stuff. You'd also like another hit from them from this same time period, "High and Dry."
High n Dry and On Through the Night are legit hard rock from them. 80 and 81 these albums came out. I was a senior in high school. Great music! Tks for playing it J Man.
Don't think i've seen this video for 20 years or so!! Back in the late '80s my cousins had this vhs cassette with Def Leppard videos and me and my buddy always wanted to borrow it and this was one the videos on it. This is definetely a trip down memory lane!
As a lifelong Def Leppard fan, High N Dry is one of my all time favourite albums. I do love every Def Leppard albums and think that some people cut up the post-Pyromania stuff because it's "too poppy" or "overproduced". My personal opinion is who cares? Pour Some Sugar On Me doesn't become a crappy song because it was played on the radio and everywhere else a million times. When Hysteria was released, everyone knew in 1987-88 that the song was going to be huge because of how good it was. When you know the band's influences from when they were young, you can hear it on every album, done in their own style. More people should give the newer stuff more of a chance. From High N Dry, try Lady Strange, You Got Me Runnin' and Mirror Mirror. The rest of the songs are great too.
High and dry and pyromania imho were their best albums, when they came out with hysteria I felt like they turned into journey, “music to attract women”, not to say it was bad, but they had toned down their music, and I always loved that adrenaline rush you get from louder and faster music.
I absolutely LOVE this band!! I grew up with a brother 8 yrs older than me so this was the type of music I was hearing before I even knew what real music was.. Finally got lucky enough to see them live with KISS in Scranton PA a few years back. That show kicked ass. They blew it out of the water. I was so impressed. They sounded just as good as the album..
Jamel thanks! Love your channel and your mission to "Keep good music alive" In your effort to cover their earlier material, you stepped on every stone EXCEPT two of their best tracks, IMO.... MIRROR MIRROR and SWITCH 625 (Steve Clark's Magnum Opus, RIP)
But you HAVE to listen to Bringin On The Heartbreak/Switch 625 together! One flows into the other. Edit: Still get chills hearing that transition in my head.
@@sikwilly45 ... while it is RECOMMENDED the two be played 'in sequence', I listen to them independently all the time. Does not diminish the song, in any way. But, I'll admit, listening to them together gives each a more complete appreciation of them. Thanks for your comment.
@@josephbishop3590 I was directing that more so towards Jamel in case it was his first time listening. Sorry I didn't clarify. But both songs are strong on their own merit indeed. The fact that Bringin On The Heartbreak was remixed and a new video produced is testament to that. Then there were those who would ask, " What's that song?" during the end credits of "In The Round, In Your Face". Like Reese's, they're two great tastes that taste great together. 😀 Thank you for reply as well. Here's to good music and good times. 👍

Rick Allen lost his arm on December 31, 1984. It was between recording the albums Pyromania and Histeria. Steve Clark Clark passed away on January 8, 1991 from alcohol poisoning between recording Hysteria and Adrenalize. He was also Def Leppard's principal songwriter and lead guitarist until his passing. Vivian Campbell joined the band in 1992 taking Steve Clark's place. Adrenalize was dedicated in memory of Steve Clark. The most heartbreaking part of what the band wrote about Steve on the insert was, "and then he was gone". Thanks for sharing Jamel!~APRIL LIPKE ~APRIL LIPKE
I loved Def Leppard on the first two albums.... Lol, we would hackey sack and have them jammin' on the JVC cassette player! Ahhhh, the 80's.... This whole album rocks!!!
This was Def Leppard! Way before the pop crap they put on MTV. This is the music that made me love this band. Either this or Bringing on the Heartbreak was the first of their songs I remember hearing. But this album turned me on to them, and then they started the slide…
This was when they really rocked. Pyromania was good, and put them on the map. Hysteria was a pop album that shot them into the stratosphere. But this album, High & Dry, KICKED ASS!!! R.I.P. "Steamin' Steve Clark".
Man! You went all the way back to the Pete Willis days! Respect. High N Dry and Pyromania were the two favorites for me. They were never the same after Steve Clark passed.
@fallingdunes I do love those two. Don't get me wrong. I just love the other two more. Hysteria was a great album and brought them the success they deserved. It definitely had more of a pop sensibility, though. Not knocking it, that's what was ruling the airwaves at the time. Me and the rest of the high school crowd were eating it up. Early Def Leppard often gets compared to Bon Scott era AC/DC because of the raw sound and heavy reliance on the hook. High N Dry was their greatest work in that sense. With Phil Collen's arrival on Pyromania, the band began the transition to a more radio friendly sound. As Great White's Jack Russell once said, " There's the rhythm hook. But the lead is a hook, and the bassline's a hook , and all this sound is happening. Holy crap!" (Paraphrasing). The "Terror Twins" had a chemistry unlike any other guitar duo. While Phil's talents pushed the band to create their own unique sound, Steve's blood and guts style kept them firmly grounded in their hard rock roots. Pyromania was the ultimate showcase for that. Sorry for the mini novel, lol. Take care and ROKKON!!!
@@sikwilly45 Fair enough but do you know that Pete Willis played 90% of the guitars on Pyromania, Steve did the rest and then Steve and Phil did the solo's. Pete did do one small solo on Pyro. That heavy sound you are hearing on Pyro is Pete. Steve and Pete were both rockers, Steve just went along with it, I doubt he was happy about the pop direction. The pop was Mutt, Joe and Phil's thing. Phil wrote no songs on Pyro.
@fallingdunes Yes. Pete Willis is actually listed in the album liner notes as the guitarist and Phil , if I remember, isn't mentioned. It was Pete's inability to play the solo for Rock of Ages one session that got him kicked out of the band. I'm pretty sure all of Phil's solos were his own, however. I don't think he mimicked any solos from Pete. I could be wrong, but I thought Steve did those. You're spot on about Mutt's direction for the band. Hysteria was Mutt's vision of "a rock version of Thriller," the one album that kept Pyromania from reaching Number 1. Given the number of tracks that charted, I'd say he succeeded. Edit: My apologies if my agreeing with you sounds like I'm disagreeing with you. I just woke up, lol.
@fallingdunes I see what I did wrong. I made it sound like Phil's arrival was more cause and effect instead of coincidence. You're right. The heavy sound on Pyromania was Steve AND Pete. It was just that little bit of Phil's technical prowess that lent itself to the pop ear. The first step in what they would later become. I loved Hysteria and really liked Adrenalize. I suppose I subconsciously love the Clark and Willis work more, as much as I love Phil Collen's work.
One of the best hard rock albums of its era. Pyromania was still good, but they got too radio pop friendly for me with later releases. This was their high water mark for songwriting, sound and attitude IMO.
Many years ago in high school, was in a band. School forbade us from playing this song. We were even going to change it to say get ready for the back seat. I believe the oldest in the band was 17.
Underrated song from an honestly great band. I know people tend to "tee hee" over liking Def Leppard but fuck that. I still love these. a LOT of 80s metal didn't hold up but these guys sure did.
My god On through the night, then High n dry, and they were only in their early twenties, Rick Allen at this album was just 19. They were amazing between '80- '84.

This was Def Leppard! Way before the pop crap they put on MTV. This is the music that made me love this band. Either this or Bringing on the Heartbreak was the first of their songs I remember hearing. But this album turned me on to them, and then they started the slide…
High and Dry is their masterpiece, as far as I'm concerned. This was them raw and unbridled.
i remember the first time I ever saw this video, i was completely blown away. Thanks for the video!
This album is my favorite. Hi & Dry is a phenomenal album and a phenomenal song as well. Many bangers on this. Just Me & My Wine is a hidden gem.
This was when they really rocked. Pyromania was good, and put them on the map. Hysteria was a pop album that shot them into the stratosphere. But this album, High & Dry, KICKED ASS!!! R.I.P. "Steamin' Steve Clark".
High n' Dry is a great album. Lady Strange is another fantastic song from this album. Sadly, I have never seen them live, glaring omission on my part.
Oh man, Lady strange may be their best song. Absolute fire.
Love these guys! I've seen them so many times live (45+) over the years and I'd go again in a heartbeat! It's been a blast being their fan!!
Def Leppard: Mirror Mirror
Jamal makes Kahless smile! Oldies but still good!
Hey Jamal! Loved this, thanks!❤️
RIP Steve Clark. You are missed. Have to acknowledge Pete Willis,
Man! You went all the way back to the Pete Willis days! Respect.
High N Dry and Pyromania were the two favorites for me. They were never the same after Steve Clark passed.
But why do you not love Hysteria, that was Steve, and some of the writing on Adrenalize.
This has always been one of my faves by them! Keep On Rockin'
this is one of my all time favorite songs......love it
Yeah, some classic Def Leppard here! Awesome
One of the most important songs of my teen years 😄 thanks bro !
Best album by Def Leppard. Great song. Lady Strange too
Jamal you are so one of us. rock on friend🥰
The good stuff. When they were still lean and mean, young and hungry. Vying for the big time.
This LP is their best release 👊🏻
Many years ago in high school, was in a band. School forbade us from playing this song. We were even going to change it to say get ready for the back seat. I believe the oldest in the band was 17.
Good selection! One of my favorite album-kick-off tracks.
Def Leppard, 1980's Arena Rock!!
Very underrated song! It ROCKS!!!
This is when def Leppard rocked before they WUSSED out commercially
Underrated song from an honestly great band. I know people tend to "tee hee" over liking Def Leppard but fuck that. I still love these. a LOT of 80s metal didn't hold up but these guys sure did.
My favorite Def Leppard song🤘🏽🤘🏽
My god On through the night, then High n dry, and they were only in their early twenties, Rick Allen at this album was just 19. They were amazing between '80- '84.
LOVE Def Leppard!
Their best line-up. RIP Clarky!
One of my all time favs !!!!
The real deal. The kegger party music of our youth. Next: "Saturday Night (High 'n' Dry)"
