This is the best Def Leppard song. This guitarist is Pete Willis who is basically the founding member and primary songwriter. He was asked to leave after developing a serious drinking problem which affected his personality making him unbearable to be around. Steve Clark basically drank himself to death, sad story. I saw them in 1983 on the Pyromania (2 consecutive nights) when Steve Clark was still alive and Rick Allen still had both arms. Got some great photos from it, too.
I seen them also in 1983 they opened for Billy Square in Rupp Arena in Lexington Kentucky great show me and two buddies from school we got so wasted lol
I was a huge Def Leppard fan in high school was my favorite band.....when Steve died of meds/alcohol (when I was a senor) it blew my mind, I was in shock. RIP Steve.
This came out in 1981. Rick was 17, Joe was 21, Pete, Sav, and Steve were 19-20. Rick's car accident that claimed his arm was 12/31/84, 6 or 7 weeks after he turned 21
Steve Clark aka. The Riffmaster Overdosed mixing pills and alcohol. Cut down in his prime. As a request I always suggest you do the Tesla tune “Song and Emotion” which was written as a tribute to him. The bands were good friends. Tesla alone is worth reviewing. They are an excellent band.
The guitarist you guys noticed is Pete Willis, one of the founding members of the band and a primary songwriter/lyricist in the band’s early days. This album came out in 1981, 2 years before Pyromania that had Photograph. Pete Willis was fired from the band in 1982 amidst issues with alcohol that compromised his ability to show up on time and do his job, but he was included (as he should be) in the band’s induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was replaced by Phil Collen whom you guys saw in the Sugar video and Photograph. Phil is still with the band today. We lost Steve Clark in 1991 due to drug and alcohol OD. RIP Riffmaster Steve!! Rock on guys!!!
They were just teenagers here. Drummer was 16…maybe 17. And this was their second album. What they did and put out was amazing….there was no one who could touch Def Leppard for their age.
High N Dry ,1981. I was Freshman in high school and remember this well. Def Leppard were just out of their teens in 1981. Actually, Rick Allen, the drummer, was born in 1963, so he'd have been 18-19 in this video.
This Album was when they first started getting some real airplay, then the album Pyromania hit and that's when they really became superstars, It was after that Album that the drummer got in an accident and lost his arm
One of my favorite songs from them. This is before the drummer lost his arm, and yes that is a different lead guitar player back then. Steve Clark died from alcohol abuse.
1981....I saw them on this tour! I was 17 years old then.... I am almost 59 now! Hey they just put out a new album ast year...you should check them out.
The magic era of John "Mutt" Lange. Him producing this talent was just perfection. High and Dry was a masterpiece. And he worked the same magic with ACDC.
Def Leppard bribed Mutt by giving him full royalties on Pyromania, a certain band member argued against this, he then went on to have full royalties on Hysteria. He took over the style of the band, after Pete left they would never be able to write another High and dry or Pyromania. Hysteria was their pop pinacle but after Mutt went they could not achieve that same pop perfection, nor could they achieve that rock perfection that many think the first 3 albums had. They are essentially a tribute band now.
Early Def Leppard, the band members were in their late teens. You guys need to listen to their first album (On Through the night) came out in 1980 and In my opinion, was their best and hardest album, and were first introduced to the US.
July of 1981 is when this album came out “high and dry” and I was only 9 at the time, but these guys and AC/DC are who got me into hard rock 🤟🏼😃🤟🏼This entire album is playlist worthy!
Steve Clarke is the other guitarists wrote most of the incredible riffs in the early days , group was Neve the same without him. Steve died after the Hysteria tour .
High N Dry was released in 1981. It was their 2nd album They were all in their early twenties, except the drummer, Rick Allen. He was probably twenty here. He joined when he was only 15.
The short blonde hair guitarist was previously in glam metal band Girl, which featured Phil Lewis on vocals who was in Torme and went on to join L.A Guns with guitarist Tracii Guns, who was the Guns in Guns N Roses.
By the way Pete Willis got kicked out for excessive drinking and partying, so the story goes. But man, Pete and Steve were magic duo for a couple of albums. Be Well.
Blonde guy is Steve Clark. He passed in an auto accident. The guy with the short blonde hair is Phil Collin, alive and well today. The youngest member is the drummer Rick Allen who lost his arm in a car accident and engineered a drum kit that he could play with one arm. The band stood behind him every step of his recovery. Side note: the brunette guitarist seen in the later videos is Vivian Campbell (from the band Whitesnake), he replaced Steve Clark.
Cold rainy day stuck inside, but I stumbled upon this. I was once you so let me tell you the real story. This is the best version of the band. You have just scratched the surface. There is an album called , "On Through The Night.". Song for song one of the best rock and roll guitar albums ever made. The same line up as you see in this video. Early and raw. " High and Dry" is great , but after that just Pop Radio Stuff. The real rock and roll version, Is the original. SIDE NOTE> These guys toured a lot with Tesla. They became good friends, especially Steve Clark, who did pass from alchohol and pills. RIP. Anyway, Tesla wrote a song called "Song and Emotion, about Steve. Check it out, and that On Through The Night album. Every song is a 1. Great stuff. I subscribe. Be Well.
Had to laugh at the lyrics... the big "see" - Haha, I have the album with lyrics... It's "Big C" And refers to the same thing as "The big D" in Wet Leg's 'Chaise Longue'
Oh the days when Def Leppard really rocked!! High 'N' Dry album (their 2nd release 1981) is by far their best, most complete album! All of their first 3 albums were/are killer!! You must react to "Rock Brigade" off their debut (my fave song of theirs) so kick ass!! It's too bad they ended up having to change their sound so much with the over-produced Hysteria and beyond (but props to them for sticking by their drummer Rick Allen) it just fundamentally altered this bands sound (not that it's terrible but it just doesn't hit as hard...though they certainly garnered more female fans because of it, with the softer edge to their rock). Keep Rockin'!
The 2 best def lep albums are on thru the night and high n dry. Which had both pete willis and steve clark. Other great early lep songs are wasted, lady strange, high n dry, mirror mirror, rock brigade, on through the night, you got me runnin...check those out
I'm so old that I saw Def Lep when Rick Allen had both arms. I waited outside on a hot hot and humid Iowa summer day. Sat alllllll night long so we could get as close as well could. Now...Steve Clark passed away from alcohol. TESLA wrote a song dedicated to Steve Carlk. It's called "Song and Emotion ' and if you havent listened to that one yet I would higly suggest it! So so so good.
you guys need to dive more into High n Dry and go further back to On Through the Night and Rock Brigade , Wasted etc....their two best albums IMO, just raw and dirty.
you're talking about pete willis the guitar player, the little guy, he was a big part of their sound, the riffs and even on pyromania even though he got fired. they were young in 1980/81, their avg age was like 19 or 20
The amazing blonde guitarist is the late brilliant Steve Clark, who died aged 31 on the 8th January 1991, breaking my heart. He was pivotal to the success of the band with his playing and songwriting. He never played for his ego, he played for the music, like David Gilmour from Pink Floyd. But he became an alcoholic and struggled badly from a lack of confidence and insecurity, despite his success. The band has never been right for me since he died and I would never go to see them without him. An amazingly talented and gentle soul who,is still greatly loved by thousands.
Great early Leppard song! Yeah, this is before they became huge. Mostly just on headbangers ball on MTV early 1980's. You can here the AC/DC influence a lot here. Guitarist here was replaced after this album. Listen to the lyrics and get what this is about and then have a good laugh when you figure it out..LOL
Love that you’re interested in Def Leppard the same way I was at your age (back when they were new). I regret not going to their show last year. Luckily they’ve done a lot of behind the scenes vids for us along that tour.
The lyrics in this video are off on a few things, but this is one of my absolute favorite Def Leppard song...but they are my favorite band, so I'm bias. :)
Their first two albums, On Through The Night, and High And Dry are their best! Def Leppard got very poppy with their next album Pyromania(their downfall in my opinion) Phil Collin took over for Steve Clark, great guitarist, but the came out with one of the dumbest, although popular, songs of all time Pour Some Sugar On Me, can't stand it! After their two rocker albums they became two poppy for me! Let It Go and High And Dry are two straight forward rockers that are amazing live as well! I was 15 when they came out with High And Dry and it is still their best album by far!
@gulfgal98 I wish they would've stayed with the hard rock style! I did see them on the Pyromania tour, but had the misfortune of being subjected to Billy Squier the warm up band! I never saw a guy get booed off the stage so quickly in my life and rightly so! Billy was a bit of a fruit loop if you know what I mean and he was a bit graphic with the microphone, mic stand, and his fruity prancing around the stage! They were in Albuquerque where I'm from and after the 2nd song people, including me,started to became agitated and started booing and he left! Thankfully, Def Leppard came out and played i most of Pyromania, some from High And Dry, and one or two from the first album! I did have the Pyromania album, but listened to it maybe 2 or 3 times, put it on my shelf, and promptly listened to High and Dry!
You've also been doing a lot of Tesla reactions and seem to really like them as well. Regarding the death of Def Lep guitarist Steve Clark, you should check out the track 'Song and Emotion' which they wrote about Clark. Clark had a way of writing such cool, memorable guitar riffs that were hooks in the songs. They tried to come up with a part for this song that is reminscent of Steve's playing. Very haunting.
Songs in this album are FIRE! And come on, Rick Allen still with his two arms before the 1984 accident, Pete Willis the "different" guitarist. Shame he had to be let go considering he was so talented with his piece, him and Steve Clark, I mean that solo....
You two seem like you're really in to the 80s hard rock and I graduated high school 1981, so it's right up my alley. You guys need to check out Dokken... they had a ton of great songs and George Lynch is probably the best one of the top three metal guitarists of all time. Also, Queensryche from the late 80s. They had a bunch of great albums culminating with "Operation Mindcrime" and "Empire" they probably had seven or eight official videos that were playing on MTV all the time... just a super, super talented band.
Pete Willis was the original Lead GUitarist who was in this video. He was replaced by Phil Collen. Steve Clark rythem guitarist who is in this video is also no longer with them. Amazing original Band!!! I saw this tour Live in 1982 - was my 1st concert!!!
that's Steve Clark, the blonde, he passed away years ago from alcoholism, the dark hair guitar player, Pete Willis quit for some reason, this is from 1981, oh hell yeah play list worthy
What's interesting is that "On Through The Night" didn't make the On Through The Night album. It made this one which was released the next year. Check out "Rock Brigade"
No, the blonde haired guitarist is the late great Steve Clark. A brilliant musician, classically trained and always played for the music and not his ego. A very sensitive and gentle guy who lost his battle, with alcoholism mixed with some prescribed medication on the 8th January 1991 aged just 30 and broke my heart.
I saw this tour October 3, 1981 at The Orpheum in Boston, when they opened for Blackfoot. It was my second concert ever at 16 years old, and five of us took "The T" "in town" alone. I was pretty much responsible for everyone else, because I knew where we were going, and I was just tougher than the others. This video, along with "Saturday Night (High 'n' Dry) and "Bringing on the Heartbreak", all from the same set as here, were in HEAVY rotation on early MTV. This song is about getting fell@ted. The lyrics girl got several of the lyrics wrong, because it's "cool eyes", "The Big 'C' ", and a few other misheard lyrics. This is one of my favorite songs ever, and favorite song by the band, long before I realized exactly which s3x act they were singing about. Pete Willis, the guitarist in blue (my favorite band member), started the band, and was a primary writer on the first three albums. He has said that getting kicked out of the band was a relief, because his stagefright was a big reason his drinking had gotten so bad. Check out his work with a later band he was in called Roadhouse. Darryl 'Dimebag' Abbott listed Pete Willis as one of his favorite guitarists, and influences. Steve Clark, the other guitarist, never seemed to get over Pete's exit from the band. That, along with family issues and severe stagefright, caused him to spiral downward in his alcoholism. He died of alcohol poisoning in 1991. If you look closely, Pete is in the "Photograph" video. The Polaroid that gets crushed through the grate towards the end of the video is him. It was probably Joe Elliott's idea, because he really seemed to have issues with Pete being the "head" of the band, to the point that he assigned the replacement guitarist, Phil Collen, Pete's royalties for years. Pete finally won his case against them to regain his place as founding member (netting him a financial portion of everything they do), and getting his back royalties. The first two albums are their best, in my opinion, and I do like "Pyromania", but Joe Elliott, and Mutt Lange took the band in a more radio friendly direction to pay off the band's debts, and it worked better than they ever imagined. 🤘💖
Um, to my knowledge, Steve was the main songwriter, as stated in an interview with Joe Elliott in a boat on Sydney Harbour of all places (I’m an Aussie). I am involved in the Steve Clark Remembered page, and also the website Steve Clark Guitar in Loving Memory, started many years ago by the brilliant Bev Knight from Scotland who knows everything about Steve, his gear, and his mum.
@@karenglenn6707 , the twins stated several times that they knew who Steve Clark was, but wanted to know who the little guy in the blue shirt was, and I'm not the only person who answered their question, or stated that he founded the band. Pete Willis actually met Joe Elliott after he started the band, and invited him to join. I love Steve Clark, but Pete Willis has been cheated out his credit in his own band, especially by Joe Elliott, for decades, hence the lawsuit that he won against the band. I still have magazines, and articles where Steve and Pete were interviewed together talking about their writing styles separately and together, and how they chose who was soloing where (guitar solos do not get songwriting credit in the music industry, unless bands share full credit on those particular songs.) They, also, did give advice on practicing at a lower volume so that you can hear your mistakes, because so many budding guitarists would just crank up the volume on their amps. Both Pete and Steve together are the pivotal sound of early Def Leppard. And it was one of the first bands I listened to that acted as a unit, when viewed from the outside. I listened to the first two albums every day for such a long time back then, and dealt with with some bullying over wearing the High 'n' Dry concert shirt, because people at my high school, and in the surrounding towns, didn't know who they were, nor did they like the incoming New Wave of British Heavy Metal. That being said, talking about Pete Willis, who he is, especially in relation to Def Leppard, does not take away anything from Steve Clark. They were bandmates AND friends, and both had stagefright, which bonded them more. He and Phil Collen got along just fine, but there were times that Pete's absence showed far more with Steve when recording and touring. Watching him slide downwards was absolutely heartbreaking, and especially hearing that he had died. They both have a special place in my heart. 🤘💖
Actually, the longest founding member of the band is Rick "Sav" Savage who had a band in high school called Atomic Mass. Several months after the band was formed, Pete Willis joined and that is when Sav switched from guitar to bass because Pete was a better guitarist. Pete Willis was instrumental in bringing Joe Elliott into the band and that is when the name was changed to Def Leppard. Pete Willis was also the guy who discovered Steve Clark whose contributions to the band were enormous because he came up with the guitar riffs that were key to the songs' hooks.. Pete was fired from the band due to his drinking which interfered with his playing and his interactions with his bandmates. Steve Clark also had a major drinking problem which led to his death, but according to Joe Elliott, Clark never played a gig drunk.
Yes exactly! Pyromania was the last decent album in my opinion, everything after that wasnt worth listening as they seemed to turn into girl music lol.
You guys make me very happy because you like Def so much I will always love them but I wonder if you play any Deep Purple their vocalist is unreal and so is every member of the group you won't be sorry
Seen them in 83.
Krokus opening up 👍
These guys need to do some Krokus. Headhunter album, so good. Screaming in the Night 🔥
Pete Willis was never the primary songwriter.
no pete willis was fired
Lady strange is another great song off of “high n dry” album which I think is their best !!
Believe it! Lady Strange and Mirror, Mirror (Look Into My Eyes) are the two best songs from the album! Keep Rockin'!
I second the motion.
Steve Clark is a tragic tale alcohol abuse. Tesla has a song in tribute to him called Song And Emotion you should check out
Not drugs. They all used cocaine at times but Steve’s issues were always alcohol, from a young age.
Def Leppard band member were 19 and 20 when their debut album "On Through The Night," was released. High 'n' Dry was their 2nd album.
Rick Allen was 15 or 16
Steve Clark aka.
This is them at their best. Pyromania was the welcome to stardom album, but this is pure rocking.

High 'n' Dry is Def Leppard's Second Albom from 1981
You guys have really been getting your 80's groove on lately. Good job and keep on rockin'!
🌴Reeaall Leopard 🔥🔥🔥First 3 albums absolute 🔥In Through the Night, High n Dry, Pyromania
Steve Clarke is the other guitarists wrote most of the incredible riffs in the early days , group was Neve the same without him. Steve died after the Hysteria tour .
Classic Album
Their first two albums were absolutely rock hard, they are now my age and I saw them 3 years ago, they performed this spot on...
My fav Def Song 🎶
By far their best album..
Great album, their heaviest one.
High N Dry was released in 1981. It was their 2nd album They were all in their early twenties, except the drummer, Rick Allen. He was probably twenty here. He joined when he was only 15.
Awesome to see Rick Allen still Excell at drumming just like this with just one arm after all that time.
The short blonde hair guitarist was previously in glam metal band Girl, which featured Phil Lewis on vocals who was in Torme and went on to join L.A Guns with guitarist Tracii Guns, who was the Guns in Guns N Roses.
Not seen anyone review this song. Glad you are!

Yes on the Playlist.
Oh the days when Def Leppard really rocked!! High 'N' Dry album (their 2nd release 1981) is by far their best, most complete album! All of their first 3 albums were/are killer!! This is the original line up !
Bought this album when it came out! 😀 I was 15... I'm now a 59 year old lifetime fan, and still declare this to be their best album!!
Right there with ya on that!! Best album release of 1981!! Keep Rockin'!
This album was released 1981 ….they were all about 21……Rick Allen the drummer was younger at 18
I'm so old that I saw Def Lep when Rick Allen had both arms. I waited outside on a hot hot and humid Iowa summer day. Sat alllllll night long so we could get as close as well could. RIP Steve
I rank this album as one of the best ever made. Period.
Ric allen, drymmer was 15 when he joined the bamd. Pete Willis playing the white guitar. This was the original line up.
Rock of Ages was around this time too. EPIC song!
2 years later
High n Dry came out in 1981. Drummer rick allen was 18, Steve Clark, Rick Savage, and Pete Willis were 21, Joe Elliot was maybe 23.
you guys need to dive more into High n Dry and go further back to On Through the Night and Rock Brigade , Wasted etc....their two best albums IMO, just raw and dirty.

I would recommend the studio version of Billy‘s Gor a Gun.
Their early stuff is the best.
Love that you’re interested in Def Leppard the same way I was at your age (back when they were new).
I regret not going to their show last year. Luckily they’ve done a lot of behind the scenes vids for us along that tour.
Great reaction! I highly recommend Bringing on the Heartbreak/Switch 625!
Pete Willis is the guitarist playing the Gibson explorer
The lyrics in this video are off on a few things, but this is one of my absolute favorite Def Leppard song...but they are my favorite band, so I'm bias. :)
Steve Clarke was a beast on guitar
Pete Willis was the orginal Lead player,.
Got kicked out for being a Drunk,.
But he was a total Badazz~
They were babies! 😂♥️
Their first two albums, On Through The Night, and High And Dry are their best!
Their Bets Album - try Switch 625
that's Steve Clark, the blonde, he passed away years ago from alcoholism, the dark hair guitar player, Pete Willis quit for some reason, this is from 1981, oh hell yeah play list worthy
What's interesting is that "On Through The Night" didn't make the On Through The Night album. It made this one which was released the next year. Check out "Rock Brigade"
That was done intentionally.
Blond haired guitarist is Phil Collen.
Check out another rocker from this CD,Me & My Wine
Heattt
Guitarist Pete Willis...he wrote their best stuff...
Umm no, he and Steve collaborated for the time that Pete was there. It was not solely Pete at all.
He was the clever one, believe me.
Def leppard was so much harder on their first albums, to much success mellowed them out
This was the "original" Def Leppard.
Check out It Could Be You and Wasted on their first record On Through The Night
Steve Clarke drank himself to death. He died in 1990 after the Hysteria album.
16 and 17 1982 I believe
They were about 18-19 here
Legendary!
Steve Clarke, one of the best guitarists ever.
Pete Willis is the one in the video and was replaced by Phil. Great guitarist.
Steve Clark died from alcohol poisoning in 1991
Hahaha, it's not, "get ready for the big see", it's "get ready for the big C"
10 arm Def Leppard are the best
Yes exactly!
Pyromania was the last decent album in my opinion, everything after that wasnt worth listening as they seemed to turn into girl music lol.
Now we have Wap. Lord help the music industry 🙏
You guys make me very happy because you like Def so much I will always love them but I wonder if you play any Deep Purple their vocalist is unreal and so is every member of the group you won't be sorry
In this video they're all about eighteen or nineteen years old
Do you get the gist?
Their first two albums were their best. Now listen to rock brigade.
That’s Pete Willis they kicked him out because he could not stay sober enough to play live and in the studio.
They replaced one guitar player because alcohol and he would walk of stage and get a drink in the middle of playing a song
NEVER EVER pause during a guitar solo, it's a reactors #1 sin!
Pete Willis they kick him out
Pete Willis is the other Guy Got kicked out for boozing replaced by Phil Collen Phil and Steve the Terror twins RIP Steve
Pete Willis
