  • Sailing boat flooding mini drama to one side, a serious question for all of you, is this THE most beautiful port to sail into, in England?! It certainly makes dealing with boat drama more bearable when you're surrounded by this much beauty!
    We also want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who is (or has been) supporting us, from friends and family, to you guys who hit the like, share and subscribe buttons and now to our patrons, it's really just unreal that you all helped to make this adventure what it is becoming and we hope that we are able to give back to you in entertainment value at least, as we try to show case the wonder, the majesty, and the beauty of these fine British Isles.
    For those of you who want to support us yet feel money is tight, or the outlook with the economy, post Covud, is a bit bleak, then that's perfectly understandable, however, if you can put up with a mere 30 seconds of an advert which is shown on this video, then you have helped immensely. You, by watching this much of an ad that's placed on our video will have played a part in making the difference between us being able to afford, say, an average new life raft (when the time comes to upgrading), to us potentially being able to level up to an all singing, all dancing, self righting, top of the range sail boat life raft, and it's these kinds of upgrades that really could make all the difference in a potential life and death situation. So to those of you who watch 30 seconds of an ad for us, sincerely, from the bottom of all of our hearts, than you! ☺️
    In this episode we (once again) experience epic highs, quickly followed by more sailing boat drama as our sailing yacht floods after we come back from a walk. We are lucky enough to sail into possibly the most beautiful entrance to a port which we've experienced, and can only hope that our amateur film making skills can do justice to the magnificence of this amazing place.

    Excellent footage of Dartmouth. Just want to give you a thumbs up on the rescue of your pup, and as a side note, I'm sure that in the event of a Mayday, you would have every boat in the area responding after your wife dons her emergency suit 😊. Again wonderful job on the video and you guys really brighten my day.. please keep up the good work

    Well Carly probably just got you another 10K subscribers - you found yourself a wonderful gal with a great sense of humor . I noticed a sign for pasties when you paid for your dingy . We in Michigan enjoy them also - brought across the pond by your Cornish miners in the 1800's . Best to check all the hoses , clamps , valves and thru hulls yearly - some of the hoses get brittle with age . Although it won't have done you any good this time a high bilge water alarm is a great thing to have . I don't know how many times I've heard " we didn't know we were taking on water until it was to late " . Was a professional grade video in a great location - Thanks for your effort

    Fixing stuff when cruising on an old boat is all part of the adventure! I try to turn these issues into a positive as you learn more about the boat and understand what tools are important . As a one man and his dog newbie I chose to sail last year locally and spent 4 months cruising the west coast of Scotland. This gave me most challenges that I would expect to get if I was sailing in other parts of the world. However, sailing on a budget, the costs and support to deal with these issues were far better than if I was sailing in say the Med!

    Funny, Mark’s had that same chat with me too. Having seen your situation we’ll heed his words in future!
    If you don’t have on of those gadgets (which we don’t), you have learn to lasso the buoy to secure you temporarily whilst you thread a mooring line carefully through the eye of the buoy. It’s easy enough once you’ve done it a couple of time. It’s a useful trick when you get into a crowded mooring field and the only buoy left is the one without a float because no one else knows how to lasso a buoy. 🤠

    The "handbags" are called pickup buoys and its easiest to moor a sailing boat or large motor boat by taking a line from the bow and going to the back (swim platform is ideal) where you are much closer and can tie on to the mooring buoy easily. Before letting the boat drift back into position.

    Good job both, it's always a butterfly in stomach moment if you suddenly come across alot of water in a bilge, that's why it pays to know every valve, connection, and system so you instinctively can rule out very quickly the obvious and find the source, which you did. It's good practice as second nature to have auto bilge pump on and everything else closed and switched off when leaving boat just in case the unexpected happens and you can't get back to her. Love the drone footage and editing, and funnily enough I've rowed my dad from that slip about 15 yrs ago. Love the cushion on step idea for Hank, I'll do that for my Lab, and what was really ironic is that tonight my wife and I had to sort one of his paws out after he nicked it on some rocks out on cliff walk.

    • @CadohaAdventures
      @CadohaAdventures  Před 3 lety

      Hope your pup is OK. Part of the issue for us with the flooded boat was the fact that the float switch on the bilge pump also failed 😔😔😔

      @@CadohaAdventures ah ha I see, and there's me thinking you were going to get through one episode without me having a pot shot at you 🤣🤭 so what your saying is you haven't been regularly checking the bilge pump function in manual and auto,,,tut tut,,and now bend over.....bilge pumps are cheap nasty bits of cheap Chinese tat, generally speaking, however one saving grace is they're so simplistic they rarely fail after confirming they work in the first instance? The float switches are so simple they shouldn't fail, unless you had dust and general gunk clogging it, which means you haven't checked it you very very naughty drone flying, dog owning, ..,...,.,......o.k lesson, if a boat is on the water regular an auto bilge pump is a must, I assume your bilge pump switch is a dual one, with auto and manual setting? Make a habit of pressing the manual button once a day before engine start-up, if it works and your strainer is not clogged then from the manual press you can assume the auto float switch will work. You can confirm this too once every 6 mths by pouring water into it and seeing it actually work. (Or get a bit of wire and poke it through the grill and lift the float)..... moral of the story, bilge pumps crucial, working crucial, regular testing crucial. I assume you got a manual bilge pump too and the handle is tied off next to it, and the hose from that pump goes where it needs to? And you got some spare hose tucked away to easily extend the pump hose in case you want to use it down below in a locker for instance? You need to seriously address all that and have a practice drill, you also need to have a selection of bungs and patches and know how to use them. There's a good video on here about that, I think it was a yachting monthly episode. 👍

    Best knot to tie a length of line to your mooring device is a "Double Sheet Bend". It does not undo when not under tension and as the main line is thicker, it doubles back on itself so passes through any eyelet on mooring buoys much easier. I started off with a Sheet bend and then made it a double sheet bend, works every time. Reef knots come undone when not under tension and two bowlines is too bulky to fit through some eyelets. Important that the main line (thicker) is the part with the big bend

If there’s room, refit the new pipe with two hose clips, as it’s not unusual for the hot water pipe to become detached as it heats up.

    The easiest way to ‘catch’ a buoy (pron. ‘boy’!) is to lasso it. Warp on each cleat, out under the pulpit and around the stem, one end in each hand and a big loop between them. Approach the buoy and throw the loop over the buoy. Let it sink and it will catch under the buoy. This is only temporary, but it allows you to hold the yacht close to the buoy while you get a full turn on the eye of the buoy (you need the full turn to ensure the warp doesn’t ‘saw’ on the eye) with the warp you’ll actually use. You can of course leave the loop as a backup. Makes things really easy because all the helm needs to do if get you over the buoy, the the hoop over it and drop back and you’ve caught it 🙂

    OMG all that water.....oh how sad. Glad you realised the problem quickly, I always do a taste test....fresh or salt. My friend left his main house battery isolator switch on, by mistake and didn't know and then drove 150miles home. Three weeks later he returned to 6 x massive house batteries totally dead.....0 volts. The cause was the fresh water pump had emptied the small amount of water that remained in the port tank, a dripping galley tap drained it and then ran dry ....so the pump just ran pumping air until it killed 6 x 250 Ah batteries. Good job the bilge pump didn't need to work much during that period !! The batteries were AGM Optima and did recover which surprised me and provided another 5 years of service.
