We had an attempted robbery and came face to face with our burglar, whilst living on a sailing boat. I'm not sure I'd go as far as to say that this is every sailors worst nightmare (as I'm sure it's not) but it is very much a serious concern.
Living on a sail boat has many aspects of vulnerability that you don't often need to worry about when living in a traditional house, but even though being robbed can happen in a house or on a boat, you can't help but feel somewhat more vulnerable on a sailing yacht. There's no garden, no fences or walls, no security lights, etc, and in some cases you could even be at anchor with no one else around you.
Neither one of us had ever been burgled before and certainly never come face to face with a burglar, until now!

I had a fella in Key West try and steal my dink - I caught him, seems he brought a filet knife to cut my painter but didn't know it was galvanized steel cable! And yeah he tried to swim away too... Since I was anchored about 200yrds from any shore, I was able to get in the dink, start the 9.9 merc on an 11ft Achillies and just keep him swimming for about 45 min until he tuckered out and asked for help. When he tossed the knife, I picked him up and had a nice ride into the Marine patrol office - they were looking for him.
Fair play, that's a solid way to deal with a thief. 🍻🍻
Glad you guy’s are ok. As a retired Police Officer I’m saddened that you feel the police did not take this seriously, we all have our off days but still no excuse.

It's a shame for sure. I have five mates who are all in the police and they're all legends. Can't win em all.
He showed evidence of a trail of destruction, spoke about blood being everywhere and identified the probable suspect, then he called the police and they declined to send anyone. I don't think he just felt that the police didn't take it seriously - it was patently obvious that they didn't care. What a useless bunch of 'good for nothings'.
Sadly my experiences with the police have been just as depressing, you hand them everything on a plate and they just shrug and go mneh of pfttt.
We found out yesterday that they did apparently go to the hospital to see the kid, and he apparently escaped from a psychiatric hospital, which he's now been sent back to, which also means that the police can't charge him as he's not of sound mind.
One of the boat owners here had been chasing the police up.

Cheers, Mike. We're both fine and it was just a dumb kid who seemed a bit out of his mind. We could of encountered someone like that anywhere, in the park, in town, walking the dog etc, just one of those things.

Nice one Dom. It is unfortunate that the Hampshire Police do not see marine crime as a priority. When we had a theft in Southsea Marina the response was "Why are you calling us, Your insured?" And that was 20 years ago.... Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.
Makes me think about taking the law more into my own hands in the future and that's never a good thing.

squad cars and a slack handful of obese officers.😂

It's hard to know what you'll do until you're faced with the situation. Truth be told if he hadn't of smashed the place up, I'd of just let him go.
Well done guys! Really envy your calm nerve. You're probably right saying "at the end no one got hurt, nothing much happened" but on the other hand just from the video footage you've showed, this guy caused hundreds of £££ damage, that someone will have to pay. Would be fair at least "name and shame"... Well at least show face and shame (as we can't cane people publicly any more)... And btw the police force in this country really sucks!! Don't know what we pay the taxes for if they can't be asked to come investigate serious things like this...

Tracey, I think the greater point is that they're not poor people.
Especially as viewed from those outside. They all own a lovely brilliant white vessel. Yes they may still be just managing (marina fees, maintenance and nautical prices see to that). But that damage looked deliberate to me.

Really, really sad to hear such a story of damage and mayhem. You guys did well to follow through as far as you could. Naughty Mr Plod though. Anyway well done on yet another positive step in the right direction and yes, you are on a fine blue water boat that would probably cry at the thought of being a canal boat! Good luck with the rigging, I’m about to tackle my own rigging issues....broken stay etc.

A lucky man could have been a lot worst.
I woke at 3:30am in my apartment and it was hot humid and everything just sticks to you. When my eyes opened I was looking down my revolver sights at the dark form of a person halfway in my window, I didn't say anything for a split second, then the person froze, then I said you need to leave. Almost ripped my screen off my window, but never any more troubles.
The most we're allowed is an air rifle and even then you'd likely get arrested for shooting it at someone, even if they were a burglar 😂

Once again a great story telling Dom! We lock our paddle boards with a thin steel cable with eye loops on, cheap from amazon and a waterproof padlock, it’s really small and doesn’t get in the way and just stops those opportunity thief’s. That’s disgusting what he did to people’s property and that’s very disappointing about the police. Glad your both ok! Look forward to the next one 🍺🍺🍺

You know it was only the day before that I was saying that we shouldn't just leave the paddle board sitting up on deck, then, the very next day, after not listening to my own advice, we nearly lose it 😳🤭
Sailing Cadoha yeah search safety cable lock on amazon, less than £15 for a 16 foot 2mm diameter stainless braided cable, I lock them to my roof rack with it! Bentley the dog is getting used to the paddle board now so we will have to paddle over when I am released from the yacht if your still in the UK! Stay safe ✌🏼

Congratulations - You are a great story teller and produce cracking videos. The reconstruction was well done (and amusing). How did you do the ‘Freemanesque’ narration. Glad no one was hurt and you recovered the board. The police have not covered themselves in glory (which is emerging as a common theme). I thought the miscreant who jumped in the river finally realised he had no option but maintain a ‘social distance’ 😂

Hi team what an unbelievable thing to happen I live on the southwest coast of Scotland and had travelled down to that exact area were you are to collect an outboard engine, I stayed overnight in the car Park you were talking to the ambulance crew I had a conversation with a bunch of young guys having a smoke (spliff) about watching there riding on there scooters to stay safe ,also a guy and his family were struggling to trailer there boat on the slip what a suprise take care 👍

We eventually managed to fly back out to our boat....via Zurich and took us 3 days to get here bur feeling great to be back in Greece. Almost back to PAOMIA as now on a coach from Athens to Lefkada.

We will! So many people have said that we need to get down to Greece, also with the whole Brexit situation, if we end up only being allowed in the EU for 90 days at a time, Turkey is always not too far away I guess 😁

Truth is that he can swim really well, but the life jacket makes it much easier to handle him if it gets a little bumpy, we can clip him to us, or in his padded room, so he can't walk around where hew likes when it's best for him not to. The handle on the back of it again is also super helpful in a lot of situations wouldn't be without it 👌🏻🙏🏻⛵️
Sailing Cadoha I don’t know to many dogs are good swimmers but in choppy seas it helps him keep above water should he accidentally get overboard till you can get back to rescue. People understand the risks but the puppy doesn’t so it’s up to the people to protect the precious cargo of their beloved pet. I’m just glad to see you do that.
It would be totally frightening to be inside your boat at night asleep, and have someone smash a window. That was a very close call. The easy to see and take away paddle board could well have save you from real damage. That aside I now see a vulnerability in our boat with two forward facing large widows. I will have to find the materials to have aboard for an “in far away places” seaworthy patch.
It's a double edged sword I guess. It's romantic and wonderful in so many ways, but you're also that much more vulnerable too. But yes, 'm sure we would have both jumped out of our skin if a window was put through on the boat whilst we slept. 😳😔

That seems to be about the crucks of it. Someone did turn. up a couple of days later, to 'collect' evidence, but it was all cleared up by then, so a pretty pointless trip.

@@jayfigg7981 Nothing new about this in the UK. In 1998 I called police because a group of teens were using spray cans as flame throwers, setting fire to fences and garage doors. As I came past they were attempting to flame a cigarette lighter to coincide with my arrival. The cops said they would send someone. This was still going on around 30 minutes later. I called them back and they said, they didn't have a car to send, but would send the first available. Next day I called them about what action had taken place. They said they had no resources to answer that call. The damage was around £12,000. No one died so all good.

It was amazing because we had our boat, a car and a van in the car park, and all were (luckily) untouched, yet several vehicles either side of us got trashed 😔

That is exactly the reason 12 years ago I decided to leave the UK. If you are the victim of a crime the police will do whatever they can to avoid pursuing the perpetrator. It is shameful. The tragedy is, that year on year it gets worse.
Really sad the cops didn’t deal with it. That was a lot of damage. No consequences.... it will happen again. If cops don’t do there job call the station and ask to speak with a supervisor. Nothing worse than lazy cops.....
They have had a lot of calls from so many people in. the marina, including the owner of the marina. They sent someone to 'collect evidence' days later after it had all been cleaned up. I think they were just trying to appease the guys at that point.
Sailing Cadoha Yeah...that is really sad.....I was a cop for 30 years.....we would never have kissed this off. It leaves a bad taste in the citizens mouth giving them the right to say things like, “stupid cops what good are they”. I cared about the community I policed, and a especially since they already had a suspect identified it would have been a slam dunk case. There is one thing I can’t stand is lazy cops. My department would never have tolerated this lack of response and effort to do something from those cops. Please don’t think that all cops do police work this way. These cops should have been disciplined for not doing their jobs.....
@@backthebadge4009 I'm super pro police and realise how hard a job we ask people like you to do, and I hate seeing the vilification of the police right now due to a small amount of terrible cops, so I'm especially gutted that they didn't exactly cover themselves in glory on this occasion either.
Several friends of mine from Jiu Jitsu are cops and they're really cool guys, I'm sure that's the case more often than it isn't.

Cops called, their response: "Yea, 1000 of dollars of damage, not a big deal, we might get around to it". Cops see someone jaywalking, shoot to kill. Glad you guys came out unscathed, but is sucks for the other people who didn't.
It does indeed seem like a shame, I think burglary generally just isn't a crime that's pursued here unless it's fine art, huge amounts of money or high end jewels that are stolen.
I'm totally guessing of course.
We had an eye witness (me) who the police never asked to speak to, CCTV which they didn't ask for, DNA evidence that was never collected. I'm not a cop, but I imagine that would have all come in handy.

Found your channel and am really enjoying the binge! I was a copper from 83 to 2000...cannot believe they could not be bothered with this, especially as the damage would have run into thousands, and the perp was basically being served up on a plate...we would have been all over it like a bad suit back in the day...not sayin ALL cops are useless and lazy these days, but.......
I have lots of friends who are cops (used to train with most of them) and in very pro police. Hopefully this was just a blip on the old radar?! 🤞🏼

I think he just jumped over the fence from a building site which was adjacent to the marina. Yes, it was such a shame what he did to others boats, although before our time was done in Itchen, everyone had managed to get their boats and cars all put back together. 🙏🏻

Wide decks great.
We really like the lay out, it's about the roomiest old 38ft boat we saw, although the cockpit is pretty small. As for the aft cabins, they are really small, but fine for a couple of friends coming to crash for a few days. We actually changed all the insulation in the starboard side cabin when we redecorated it, although now our plan is to turn that into a kind of utility room with a large freezer, washing machine, and a water maker 😁

This doesn’t surprise me with the police. If insurance companies will pay out they don’t care. Exactly how many thousands of pounds worth of damage has to be done to get them off their backsides I’m yet to find out. Next time mention that you think he may have a firearm. That will bring them.

hello i was one that said you should go though the bay instead of the canals adding to the story if you took a skipper as it is your first time on your boat going offshore nd i don't think it would cost a lot more than going through the canals (just an idea )

Ha ha, it came with the life jacket, although having thought about it more, as much fun as it is to watch him terrorise kids swimming in the water, it'll probably make more sense to get him a brighter, heavier duty life jacket 😁
You had practically given Police their guy and they decided to let him go . Brave of you to chase him . I would have second thoughts about that . No one hurt luckily . I could do, although I'm not sure I really know how to maintain safety for liveaboards just yet, we're very much in the early stages of the learning process ourselves 😬
It's terrible to be burgled but what is even more distressing is the attitude of your police. That kid will do it again now that he knows he can get away with it. Disappointing really. Glad you're both ok and Hank (the guard dog lol)
Yeah I'm fairly gutted about it. I have five friends in the police, people I used to train with back in the day and they are all good guys, I'm not sure the new breed are cut from the same jib.
wow i cant believe the damage. Cone is one thing but thats just not right i do not feel sorry for him at all. Plus the time and money its going to take those owners to get everything back in shape. That Hallberg Rassy pilot house looks tottaly trashed so sad. Glad you guys are ok and nothing was damaged.

The police are underfunded and have had numbers cut so they see it as low impact / insurance will deal with it and that guy is like that because it's a social issue & not down to them.

We did, yes and eventually it turned out the man had escaped from a psychiatric hospital, so no charges were pressed when the police did eventually catch up with him.
As you say, we've all been drunk, and climbed up the odd lamppost onto a building roof, and had to be rescued by fire brigade, cos we suddenly sobered up once we saw how high up we were, but hey were just drunken stories to pass down to our kids, that was just pure anarchy, little scrote, hope he caught something nasty from the river water, top marks for chasing him down and passing it onto the police though, to be fair, I always considered a liveaboard a lot safer than a house ? Security wise, the boat rocks if anyone steps on it, and as you say, you just know when the sounds around you change a little, glad you got off lightly
I guess that's another way to look at it. Although I normally sleep through anything, especially as I take my hearing aids out when I go to bed.

Hi guys, pretty shocking damage and luckily you got off lightly but at least you followed up on the guy. Shocking also the police were not interested, especially when there is evidence all over and it would seem an open and shut case. What are the police there for? Anyway' I was in that same yard just over a year ago. I assume you are dealing with Pav at Rigit? I sincerely hope you get a good job done and it is done on time and at a good price but I have some experience of his work I can share if you are interested. It's actually probably quite lucky the paramedics found him before I did, as there were a lot of very angry lads back in the marina to drag him back to.
It begs the question, where was Hank in all this, tucked up with Cali I suppose?...
