  • This video tutorial will walk you through how to change the oil on a 2019, 2020, or 2021 Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra. My truck has the 5.3L V-8 with Dynamic Fuel Management. Everything should be the same with the 6.2L V-8 with DFM, but if you have 4Cylinder turbo, a V6, or a V8 with Active Fuel Management, your oil quantities and weights may be different. Below are some useful links related to this video. Thanks for watching, Please comment, like, and subscribe to help support the channel!

    Filter Wrenches: I actually recommend you buy these at the auto parts store where you buy your oil and filter. They come in a lot of different sizes and its a good opportunity to check for fit since you have the filter right there. A high quality strap style wrench is a good investment.

    Do mine myself now to since my dealer charged me $109 last time for a oil change. I bought everything myself for $62 at my local parts store and 20 mins I done it myself. My dealer is an hour away and since covid they only do oil changes during the week. So with lost time from work and gas to get there I was upwards of $200 for an oil change. I service everything else myself so figured save some cash and do it myself. I took step ny step pics with time stamps for the warranty incase a claim ever arises.

    Torque spec is 18 lbs for sure. All full synthetic oils will get dark fast this is normal and expected. Dark syn oil is not a indication of it being dirty or old. Detergents in the oil are activated with heat and turn dark. Dark syn oil just means it is doing its job.

    In the manual that came with my 2020 silverado 2500HD 6.6L V8
    NOTE THE EXTRA TEXT "AND 6.6L V8 ENGINES" THAT'S NOT IN THE MANUAL IN THIS VID.
    "Viscosity Grade: Use SAE 0W-20 viscosity grade engine oil for the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engines. Use SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade engine oil for the 2.7L L4, 4.3L V6 and 6.6L V8 engines."
    I live in Texas so its get cold(if you can call it that if you're from the North) during Jan-Feb, and with the exception of a freeze that comes every now and then, it's HELL out here so I would never need 0Winter. So Chevy has added the 6.6L V8 to the SAE 5W-30 list.

    Hi, great video and good information. I have always been a do it yourselfer when it comes to vehicle maintenance . The main advantage is you can let the oil drip for as long as possible and get that extra little bit out. You will not get that at any oil change facility . The one thing I don't like is old oil remains in the cooler, I wish there was an easy way to flush it out without having to buy double the oil. The only difference with my 2020 Sierra is I don't need to put it on ramps, I can slide right under even with my beer belly.... Cheers

    Great video, I know a lot of people have stated that for 60 bucks let the dealership do it. I never take my vehicles to the dealership to do it. It is not worth the wait time nor the peace of mind that is done right. Most dealerships never have their "A" techs do oil changes. They use the less experienced Lube techs to do the oil changes. I have heard of too many stories of the dealership not doing it correctly. I know when it is done that everything is tight and filled correctly. Also, i can use the oil and filter i want in the truck. I keep very accurate records of the oil changes in a log book in the truck. Thanks for the Video. I always look online for videos like this.

    Really nice video. If you are fortunate to be a Costco member, full synthetic dexos oil is at about $4.00 a quart (up a dollar or so over the last year and sometimes free shipping) and NAPA filters are made by Wix (just an FYI), so before any promotions, cost will be around $45. for me. I prefer the Wix (various retailers, including Rock Auto if shipping is reasonable) or Wix made filters and I watch for the occasional sale price. Be certain to not buy the 5,000 mile rated oil filter, buy only filters designed for synthetic oils. I also use jack stands when using the drive-on ramp- seems like just an added peace-of-mind habit for me. As far as dark oil, it's supposed to get dark after normal use. Changing oil at longer intervals is a plus considering the cost and quantity of quarts needed in newer vehicles. Vehicle use and driving conditions are always a prime criteria, naturally; short interval oil changes are a total waste of money, IMHO. Cheers.

    Thank You, I will be doing this myself rather than take it to the dealer. I paid extra during my purchase for the dealer to do my oil changes, but I'd rather do this myself as the last time they did it the oil didn't seem all that clean and full when i checked it shortly afterwards. I am not even sure they changed it. On all of my other vehicles I add some clean oil after it stops draining to flush the dirty oil left in the engine. You'd be surprised how much dirty oil id left inside before clean oil drains out.

    Love doing my own work. Did a tire rotation today, would only have been $25 at the dealer but I too like to learn and do my own work. Because I don't have the ability to get all 4 wheels off the ground at once, I used the spare tire to start and learnt how to remove it as I had never actually done that before. It also, provided a good opportunity to check the spares tire pressure. Tpms relearn tool is $25 on amazon.

    • @swallytrip
      @swallytrip Před 2 lety +1

      Those tires need to be rebalanced during a rotation though…and $25 for a rotate and balance isn’t that bad it will save you in the long run of uneven tire wear and possible mechanical wear to suspension parts by them being out of balance. I know some people will argue this but I did tires for 20 years passenger car and commercial tires trust me on this keeping a tire balanced goes a long way

    I’m using in my opinion the best oil and more importantly the best oil filter. Where I live it was a hundred dollar oil change. I save over 50 bucks per oil change on one car. This car uses the same oil filter on another car I have, so I save on the oil filters in bulk on line. Buy oil on sales at local stores. Always have the next oil change for my cars in garage on the shelves.

    i have had several instances of a filter leaking if not tightened tighter than by hand , as far as the lengthy change intervals , after testing on my work truck with oil analysis , that changing oil at 12,000is still within the parameters of good oil quality , it bothered me a bit so i change oil filter half way between changes , and i have always used amsoil oil and wix or ac filters , my trucks get changed out at 200,000 mile plus and do not burn any oil when retired , tip , i do hurt diffs and am experimenting with that as well , trans seem great and service on gm specs

    Really well done video. Looked this up because like you, was on my second oil change after the 1st free one, and after a $97 bill I decided to just go back to doing my own. After owning a 2012 and now having the 2021, am glad GM engineers got their stuff together enough to put the drain plug and filter in an accessible location and am going to do all my own from now on. Only feedback I'd give is to get chocks for your rear tires after getting your angle from the ramps. Unlikely the ebrake fails but redundancy is your friend and especially with you having younger kids who'll want you around for a long time👍

Three comments please,, Not only vehicle in park and using e brake but I always put a pair of tire blocks behind the back wheels. U never know. All I wear disposable gloves, not sure why you would get your hands covered with dirty oil. Lastly I let drip for as long as it takes. One oz of dirty oil darkens a gallon some what. I read else where in the comments that some oil stays in the oil cooler. Im going to have to read further as that wouldn't be good at all for the new oil . Cheers

    From experience I have a couple of suggestions. It seems the oil drain plug has a rubber gasket or O-ring in a groove where it comes in contact with the oil pan. Also, the oil filler cap has a similar O-ring. I noticed a bit of extra torque was necessary to remove the drain plug and the oil filler cap was surprisingly tight. My advice would be to add a bit of oil to those O-rings before re-installing (similar to coating the oil filter gasket.) An after thought is that the drain plug O-ring should per replaced periodically, if not with every oil change; however, I did not research that prior to this edit.

      @@ernestoferrufino6584 you can’t get that dexos rating in conventional oil as far as I can tell. I use full synthetic and go most of the oil life percentage. 8 quarts of full synthetic would be a huge waste if you follow the 3k mile rule of old days.

    Helpful video. Like many mentioned do you really save by doing it yourself? My local Chevy dealer charges me $75 including tax for oil change 8qts, tire rotation, top of fluids and car wash. Not really worth the headache to do yourself anymore, not much saving either.

    So my question is why does your oil pressure read 60 psi at idle in the very beginning of the video? Aside from that, after my one free oil change I just did my second one myself. Takes about 30 minutes in my driveway and I use more premium oil than the dealership offers. I’m a big fan of Mobil 1 extended performance as I’ve had great results in the past so I used that. As others have stated, dealerships are offering reasonable oil changes these days but to me I’d rather spend the short amount of time to do it myself and know it gets done right with the oil of my choice. 10 quarts of Mobil 1 extended performance and two Mobil 1 filters cost me $70 plus tax. My dealer charges about the same for Delco oil and filter. To each his own I guess. Just hit 14k on my 2019 LTZ71 and I have loved every second of ownership so far. Zero issues aside from a few minor recalls that I didn’t even personally experience.

    Newb here. I have a large oil leak the majority of the length beneath my truck after an oil change by a mechanic 5 days ago.
    I've reported smaller puddles for the last 2 months. The mechanic said he couldn't find no leaks. I even took a picture of the last leak. No leaks he said even with proof.
    This is the worst leak I have ever seen. My truck is a 2020 Chevy Silverado. When they changed it, he said there was 5 extra quarts of oil in it. I took it to Valvoline in Phoenix to be checked before driving back to MN 10 days ago. Apparently after telling me it didn't need to be changed, they added that oil. Because I'm an ignorant dipsh*t, I didn't know what they were doing.
    Would anybody know if this is a huge problem? I researched oil leaks after an oil change and found that sometimes it's an easy fix due to a double gasket issue, an oil plug stuck, which just takes replacing by the shop that did the change. My other question is, I drove it approximately 60 miles yesterday without any issues. No smoke, no oil pressure changes, no shifting issues, no oil drips in driveway or on cement apron in front of the garage, no strange smells, etcetera. Is my truck's engine permanently ruined?
    The only reason I noticed it was because I clumsily dropped my keys and upon bending down, discovered the mayhem.
    Good news is my truck decided to unload at home in my garage. It didn't do it on the road, etcetera.
    Sitting here trying to figure out how to get it towed and get a rental car being today is the Labor Day holiday. Mofos are closed.
    First day of work Tuesday... I'm trying to get to work. I've contemplated renting a damn UHaul truck to use until I can get my truck fixed. 😔
    Why is this happening? 🥺 I religiously care for my gorgeous truck. 😩😫

    Terrible protip: keep your engine running while you do an oil change. This ensures all oil is cycled out. Keep it running until it stops, this is the sign it is ready for new oil, among other things.
    In all seriousness, great video.

    Some gloves would be nice and checking with the Dealer. Mine is offering Oil change and Tire rotation for $60 not worth the time or effort to do it yourself.

      @Xeyedjohn Před 2 lety +1

      I agree about using gloves, and you can wipe them down while they are still on before moving to the next step. I disagree about the time and effort of doing it yourself. I guarantee you care more about your truck than the dealer does and you will give it the extra attention it deserves as the owner.

    • @solidamanda
      @solidamanda Před 3 lety

      @@jayer-su3hu good point, however I believe its the price to lure you in for other stuff, like tire rotation. They charge about 80(maybe 60) just to swap tires. They checked the box for tire rotation when you book appointment. You'd have to uncheck to make it 55. So usually its about 130 for oil change and tire rotation. I think that's how they make it work plus the up selling they make on you for other "repairs".

    You shouldn't change the oil so often. Changing under 5000 miles may cause more harm to your engine. New oil has abrasive action to the cylinder for the first few Mike's. I go based on the oil life percentage and change it when it goes under 8% which is around 7000 miles.
