Thank u very much on explaining on how to use the mcgraw 8 gallon air compressor 100%
Glad to help
Yes indeed very well explained will be purchasing me one of these mcgraw 8 gallon air compressor
Enjoy it
I have the small one in the big one. I got a big one for Christmas and I'm glad I watched this video because instructions was limited and only telling me I had to open the foul but said nothing about the drain valve or anything else. Will this be in my first air compressor? I was going by but the manual was telling me but your video kind of explained more. So either I was missing part of the manual or the manual was just crap cuz I know they don't always tell you everything you need to know. I really appreciate it. We helped me out a lot. Now I know I have to break it in before I have to use it
Thank u for your video. I bought the same exact one. Instructions didn't show which way to turn to open fully both knobs, but they were both very stiff. Afraid to turn either way of being broken. Your video was excellent. U gave me ideas for the hoses as well. Thank u again.
Glad it helped, I wish you the best with your new compressor.
I have the same compressor with a couple minor differences but for a cheap compressor I'm impressed with it. I can run 2 framing guns all day long simultaneously and it keeps up just fine. The only thing I don't like is how it overheats easily when in direct sunlight but in the shade it operates normally without problem. The shroud allows sunlight to heat up the sensor so it cuts power till its cooled for 15 minutes and you do the reset procedure. Overall for the price and it's capabilities, in 20+years of working with pneumatics I am satisfied. I've had much worse from brand names and "better quality" units
Thanks for the info. I think it's hard to beat at this price point.
10/10 setup and Intel, ty
You're welcome and thank you for watching!
Probably gonna buy this compressor, because it is very similar to one I had to part with a few years ago.
MY usage similar to yours, except I will use it for motorcycle and bicycle tires, as well as car tires.
I've had the long inflator nozzle like yours, but found the ball nipple (like the old fashioned service stations used to have on the end of their lines) to be able to reach tighter spots.
For folks who have never used one of these types of compressors, a brief explanation about setting the pressure dial, might be useful.
Thank you so much for this video. Someone gave me this compressor, but it had no air hose, and I had no idea how to determine what size hose and bits to purchase. Now I know 😊
Great to hear!
The drain valve isn't in the center of the tank, it's up the side a bit. That means it will not drain water off the bottom unless water builds up to that valve.
True, you have to tilt the compressor a bit to fully drain the water.
You can just lean it over to get all the water out
Java I was puttin boots on to go get one ur comment made me stop dead in my tracks 🍻🍻🤝🤝 I didnt give that a huge thought thanks
Just tilt it to the sure
After doing braking compressor do you close the regulator or leave it fully open?
If I'm not going to use the compressor right away I leave it open. If I want to use the compressor I adjust the regulator to the pressure I need for what I'm doing. Fully opening the regulator will bleed the pressure from the hose. I think that is good for storage so the hose isn't constantly under pressure when not in use.
Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Just bought on of these yesterday, taking it back tomorrow! Sorry piece of equipment!
Sorry to hear yours is no good Cliff.
What size adapter did you get for transition from air compressor quick disconnect to air hose?
I used 1/4" NPT fittings. Here's a link to a set that's similar to the one I used.
Milton S-212 1/4" NPT M Style Coupler and Plug Kit - 7 Piece

I also added this link in the video description for others that may be interested in what fittings I used in this set up.
Did u have any air leaks at the female coupler end ? Does that female coupler take any size of male adapters ?
No air leaks at the female coupler on mine. If I remember right I think it was a 1/4” coupler.
Is this compressor an automated shit off and on? When in use of an air tool?
Do u leave your drain valve open after each use til u use it again ?
No I don’t
Step 2 under General Operation says to close the in-line Shutoff Valve. Do you know where the in-line Shutoff Valve is located on this compressor? The instruction manual says it's between the compressor and the air hose behind the gauges?
Also, step 4 under General Operation says to Pull the ring on Safety Valve to release pressure. Do you know how long we are supposed to pull on that ring? Is it just a pull and release or pull and hold on for much longer?
Pull and release.
I did not break mine in right. I guess I actually closed the vavle? Plus (+) means pressure not open, I guess. I still ran in for 25 mins. Is it fugazi?
I think I will be fine
@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 Thanks for the video and the follow up!
I just bought a McGraw 8 gallon oil free air compressor from harbor freight just like this one. Why does yours not have the air filter installation? Something doesn’t seem right with my air filter. It doesn’t even thread in more than half way of the threads provided. Was this some sort of design flaw and perhaps why your machine has no air filter to screw on? Any ideas?
That's a good question but I don't know the answer. I'm thinking there must be a couple different model numbers with a few slight changes. I don't know if my version is newer or older than yours. Mine does have a replaceable air filter but it's not the screw on type. Mine has a single phillips head screw to replace the air filter. (My model is #56269)
Mine too! Just got it today and the screw in air filter still has like an inch of play to be completely on. I have been trying to find someone with the same problem. The videos i have watched seem to be almost, if not all the way screwed on with ease. Mine just doesn't want to full go in. Hate to have to drag this thing back to the store
@@ein9367 I'm not sure your setup or what yours looks like but based off your description it is no different then mine. My air filter has more threads then the port it screws into so it bottoms out before it reaches the full length of threads. Does not effect anything.
Yeah mine theads in just a little bit too. But with a little Teflon tape that's not really a problem
Hey, I have the same one, did exactly as explained, however, my compressor still gets to 60 PSI and turns off after a minute of hick ups.
Any idea what I should do?
Does the regulator need to be open or closed?
If it were mine, I'd return it and get another one. The regulator controls the amount of pressure that is fed into the hose. If it's closed, no pressure to the hose.
Do you think that it has a technical defect? I must say that it’s brand new, I just opened it from the box.
I don't really understand what the problem is. It's really hard to tell what's going on without actually being there or seeing a video of what it's doing or not doing.
@@easyactivations9951 The left gauge should show you what the pressure is in the tank. The right gauge shows what pressure is (regulated) to flow to your tool or through the output hose. Turning the regulator knob counter clockwise will reduce the pressure going to the tool. Turning the regulator knob clockwise will increase the pressure to the tool. If you turn the knob fully counter clockwise it will completely shut off the pressure to your tool. This is how I generally store the compressor because it will take all the pressure off the hose. (just my preference) When I get ready to use the compressor, I'll turn the knob clockwise to the pressure setting I desire for what ever tool I'm using. Hope this helps you out.
@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 Thanks, I just got it yesterday and when it gets to 60 in the tank clock, it will start hick ups, no idea what it is. I'll send you a video later.
For the air connection setup, the directions go over using an in-line shutoff valve and a regulator valve. Are they needed as it seems to say in the directions or are they trying to get me to buy more stuff? 😅
Figure they'd be handy, but wasn't thinking they'd be a necessity!
You don't need another regulator and shutoff valve. The machine has both of those already. Just a hose and some sort of tool at the end of the hose is all you need to use the air compressor.
Hello, thanks for the review. I am a home crafter and want to spray paint my small fence with regular paint. Have you tried painting? I am not needing it for a massive paint job but touch ups on my tool shed, fence, and craft small paint jobs.
I have not done any painting with this compressor. I really don't know what the requirements are for a compressor that's used for painting honestly. You could always get it and try it out. If it's not sufficient just take it back and trade up before your 90 days is up. Good luck with your projects!
There is a restocking fee so you will not get your money back unless you upgrade or exchange and also the minimum requirements for the most basic HVLP I believe are 4 CFM. Which is actually a lot. Now I will say that I've had their 3 gallon hot dog recently which is how I know about the restocking fee but when I use my iwata airbrush at 30 PSI it did not nearly need to refill the tank nearly as often as my hyper tough 3 gallon hot dog air compressor have been using prior to. It doesn't seem as if it's built a little better it's loud as all get out though I can tell you that. But just be wary of the restocking fee it's 20%. I've used the coupon to get it for 49.99 and I got some sandpaper came out to 60 something dollars I got 40 something back so there you go.
You didn’t actually turn it on & operate it?
Does it say what the scfm at 40 psi is rated at it say 90 psi is 4.1 scfm
Not that I have seen
Purchased this exact same compressor and I loved it but it didn't even last a year I was so upset by that.
Can this compressor seat a tire bead on a car tire?
I don't know, I never tried that.
Run it so we can hear it. Is it loud?
Yes, I think it's loud. The good thing is it only takes about two minutes to fill the tank and then shut off. I'll run it in an upcoming video so you can hear it.
Have you tried to run a impact on it yet
No, it will probably run an impact but not for very long. I saw a video of a guy running an impact on the black oiled 8 gallon tank.
It will just make sure to set pressure to the tool your useing. I use mine and frame a whole house with it
Thanks for the input Quinn!
You didn't show the entire compressor in the video but yours is missing an air filter. Did it come like that? Did you buy one and install it?
It came with an air filter but it's a little different shape and size than other models of this compressor.
Have you tried to see if the unit will automatically re-pressurize? I have the exact same unit, bought end of Oct, and it's going back. Believe the unload valve is defective, so when the unit hits 120psi and attempts to rebuild pressure in the tank, the compressor sounds like it is power starved. I believe this is caused by too much head pressure on the compressor, because if I drop the line (tool) pressure to 0, it will run again, or if I depressurize the tank. Both options are not acceptable if you expect this unit to restart automatically to keep pressure in the tank. Check out the 1 star reviews on HF. Check your unit before your 90 day warranty expires.
Tom, thanks for the information! My compressor unit seems to be functioning as it should. Fingers crossed that it continues.
Tom, do you plan to replace yours with another one just like it and try again? Or are you going to buy a different brand of air compressor? (Just curious)
I have the same issue. Did you figure it out?
Even I could put that together 😀 hey bruce off topic, I was thinking the other day, didn't you buy a place in AZ near your folks?A winter home. Was just wondering, you havnt mentioned it lately. 😀❄☃️
Yes we had a place in AZ near my folks. We sold it at the end of last season. We are staying put this winter. Just too many places to take care of and decided to thin them out a bit.
Gotcha, I figured that, man I'd like to be somewhere warm in the winter.😀
Me too! I've learned over the years that what I want and what I get are often never the same. I'm just thankful to be close to family and I can help them with what ever I can. My parents live here too and they will stay here this winter as well. They are selling their place in AZ too. We'll get through this winter together weather it be warm or cold.
I think a place in Az for winter and a place on the oregon coast for summer would be ideal but like you say it's hard keeping up 1 house. Especially this year things have been weird.TC😀✌
Is it good for nail gun?
I don't know yet but I hope so.
Yes it is, nail guns dont use constant pressure like an impact or a tire inflator.. theyre short bursts of air and dont deplete the air as fast.
Thanks for the info mixwell 1983!
I could be wrong, but it looks like you closed the regulator valve which prevents air from passing through the male coupler.
Not sure what part of the video you are referring to but the compressor works good as it should.
@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 At 3:40. I have the exact same compressor, and it seems to me counter clockwise would be closing the regulator, not opening it. You'll notice that no air passes through the main coupler when the regulator has been turned counter clockwise, as you're doing. The goal of the break-in instructions is to have air pass through the entire system (opening the regulator and the drain valve). The break in is primarily for draining any water that has been built up in the tank while sitting in the hardware store waiting to get purchased, and to heat up the motor for the first time. Technically, counter clockwise is "opening" the regulator, but the goal is to open the system which requires the regulator valve to be closed. The instruction manual that comes with the unit does a poor job explaining, imo.
Oh yes, I understand now. I agree with your observation. It's been a little while since I did that break in. I may have had the main valve closed instead of open. Luckily I did have the bleed valve on the bottom open so it was draining the tank instead of building pressure during the break in process.
@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 I just purchased mine the other day. How's yours working out for you?
Mine was working quite well but it didn't have enough tank capacity for what I needed. I used it for about a month and a half then decided to trade up on the 21 gallon compressor that HF had on sale. Since I was within the 90 day period all I had to do was take it in and pay the difference to get the larger compressor. During the time I used the 8 gallon it was a great compressor. I didn't have any problems at all with it. It just wasn't enough volume for what I needed.
Whats the point of the 15 minute break in?
Good question
@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 Well? Lol What's the answer? I mean i did it but im curious as to why.
You skipped a step in the break in, and your video doesn't show it until you can see that you added the coupler into the quick release valve
mine shit the bed after 5-6 months 🙄
Its es-cape. Not Ex-Cape
There is an air release on top of the unit. Can any nasa scientist please inform me how the hell to close it???
Nothing in the Instructions manual, no one from the store knows how, and nothing on CZcams!!!
Hose is to small. 3/8!
These medium-small air compressors are basically useless. You only need a very tiny compressor to air up tires but you need a huge compressor to run very small air tools (the ones that use constant flow, not nail guns). So you either have to spend $60 or $600. There is no in between.
I use my compressor to blow out my shop or garage quite often. Or to clean up a work area from sawdust. A pancake compressor is pretty small for that task and a big $600+ dollar compressor is overkill for that task IMO. These small or medium compressors and their medium price range is nice. I think that's why they are some of the most popular and useful compressors on the shelves. It really depends on what the user needs are as to what is the best choice.
This compressor sucks if you like to take breaks all the time and you don’t want to get the job done buy this ! It overheats fast and won’t restart until you unplug it, for 5 min after about 10min after use, what junk
