So true. As a long time viewer of Niki and Gabi, Gabi has always assumed the role of the innocent little girly girl (whereas Niki is the "mature" one) and it's kind of just implied in the nature of her content in order to cater to her young fanbase. When in fact, she is 25 years old and should be treated as such and suffer the consequences that adults do from their actions.

Imo, not media literacy so much as taught about abuse dynamics and interpersonal relationships. I think that would really help all the problems with parasocial relationships and kids, and with the huge numbers of us who face abuse as a child or go on to face it as adults

Her implying bad things happened to her as a child as well in that way really doesn't sit right with me. It comes across as weaponizing trauma
If she is a survivor she should seek therapy and not use it as deflection in Shane Dawson way.

I feel this is the case with Gabi, _because_ she posted it like it was no biggie and is still not realizing the harm she’s done. I don’t think it’s fair to assume she’s lying/deflecting, how would you feel if someone said that when you opened up about your experiences? I would feel defeated. It could very well be a family member she doesn’t want to out as an abuser publicly and as you may know, it takes years for victims to recognize abuse. She needs therapy imho.

a mistake is forgetting to take the chicken out of the freezer when your mom asks you to. purposely uploading, editing a caption, posting, and picking people to SEND naked videos of yourself as a child without disclosing what the post is is NOT a mistake. especially at 25 years old

If you go to the niki and gabi channel about 4 months in they have a video titled ‘we need to talk’ they address the situation and it talks about gabi being upset about the comments to niki. It’s annoying though because when everyone praises gabi and not niki, she never gets upset. 🤔😐 but yeah that WAS the video and the other title is when they speak about it(which is still up btw).
This is one case where intent doesn’t matter. She may not have intended to sell CP, but that’s absolutely exactly what she did. Point blank period.
Exactly, there was a case where someone was playing with a gun, and they didn't intend to shoot anybody but they did. Even though it wasn't their intentions they still went to jail... I was a Gabi fan but this whole situation has shown me she's not the best role model. :(

The world is always in turmoil and we still haven't gotten good at dealing with it. Harder living in a world and a system left behind to be pieced back together by baby boomers to millennial and further who after a reign of flourishing from their parents were handed the totem and lit the whole thing aflame. Its lead to individuals such as this because then many of the children of said baby boomers after enduring the trauma and abuse of their parents went on to do the same to their children. There are many forms of abuse even if done with good intentions. Not ensuring your daughter doesn't turn out like this is a form of it.

So let me clarify. When I said “people who complain about cancel culture”, I mean people who don’t want to be held accountable for their mistakes anymore. We have to remember that cancel culture began as a way to give consequences to people who did shitty things and wouldn’t see consequences otherwise: see Kat Von D. She’s rich and not a social media celebrity, so her livelihood isn’t impacted by people pointing out that anti-vax rhetoric is dangerous and full of misinformation. By “cancelling” her, people knew not to buy her products, so it finally began to hurt her bottom line. There would have been no accountability from Kat, as hard as people tried.
I will admit that there are a lot of problems with cancel culture, but at the same time, most things that go wrong with cancel culture is a consequence of the internet itself. Cancelling the wrong person/for something they didn’t do? Misinformation because of how widespread and fast the internet has made news and communication. Cancelling someone for something that wasn’t even that harmful? It’s difficult to separate bad actors from the good on the internet.
I agree with you on accountability, though. It’s just that when people complain about “cancel culture”, 9/10 times they aren’t saying that because they genuinely care about productively holding people accountable. They just want to go back to a time when you could say or do anything you want without consequence.

@Bird Wing earlier this year a family known for their vlogging channels “rehomed” (their words, not mine) their adopted special needs son after he had been a member of their family for about bc two years. They claimed it was because they were no longer capable of providing adequate care for him, but there seems to be evidence that they adopted him against the advice of various doctors and used the adoption as a gimmick for clicks on their videos. Other people have made some really good videos about the topic that do a way better job of explaining the situation, but ultimately what is most important is protecting the child’s identity (which, clearly, the family did not do)
How do influencers not realize how f***ed these kinds of decisions are? Like how did she not even hesitate to send that video...on a site known for adult content...???

(Sexual clickbait as well as users unknownly bought what the actual video consisted of) Iunderstand only fans can be used for wholesome contact but in those cases this wholesome content is actually wholesome content that has been marketed as such.

This whole situation really disappointed me. I’m only 14 and I already can see the seriousness of the situation that is happening. I’ve been supporting niki and gabi for years and even though I’m young I can see the whole entire situation and what’s happening and it’s disgusting. There’s literally people younger than me who follow and support her, and this is like idk I’m just so disappointed honestly. I think Gabi forgets that her fans aren't literally kids. People often say her fans are "kids" just because it is shorter that saying "young teenagers". Did anyone else watch the Emily D Baker live stream upload where she talked about this?
She said (based off of what her attorney friend who deals with CP cases) that when they do have cases of CP they only look at the image, and the image itself is not enough for her to be tried. Emily said it has to obviously be sexual in the image/video, and a toddler lifting up their dress in a home video isn't that.
I think this shows that we need updated laws in these instances to protect children and that context really does need to be considered in these situations.

the laws, sadly, simply aren’t there to protect children. i couldn’t charge my abuser for sexually abusing me from age 4 until i was 17 because by the time i had enough money and courage to go through with it, the statute of limitations had already expired. it hadn’t even been 4 years.

Its unfortunate that nothing can be done for your situation. The situation itself is traumatizing and hard to speak about when one is not ready. I understand why we have the statue of limitations, but there are some situations that deserve more time.
I saw that Emily D Baker video and it took me a bit but then I “got” it. There isn’t anything inherently shameful or sexual about an anatomical image. So let’s say a photo is taken for the purpose of education, to be published in a medical journal. Someone sees that photo in a medical journal and becomes aroused. Not the purpose of the photo or the intention of the photographer. Does this educational photo suddenly become CP? What if that person republishes the photo on a MAP site? Is the photographer now a criminal because someone misused an image? The answer has to be no. You have to assess the image on its own merits, art vs science vs CP. That’s said, what Gabi did may not be criminal but it’s unethical and just reaches the lowest levels of trolling. It wasn’t cute, or funny. It was in grotesquely poor taste.
If people are going to do things like this, all of their platforms should be removed. Especially since they don't face legal prosecution.

I'm so glad you addressed this! I was part of her "fancybabies" for a very long time, but I grew up and became one of the older fans and while her content was still enjoyable because of her style, her personality became someone I didn't really support anymore. Also her fans have taken stuff too far. Gabi got them to send death threats to one of her ex best friends Chanel Heeter without them knowing the full story to the point where she had to deactivate everything from her social media. Her morals started to be geared towards money and clout and this year really exposed this. She's always done shock value things in the past for attention when she has admitted in an interview, but this is unacceptable. Her pulling this as a stunt and a joke triggered me because I didn't expect this from her at all. It was a slap in the face because she has always prided herself on making her channel a "safe space" free from anxiety for her fans. But it's clear out of all of this, she only cares about a celeb friendship.....
EXACTLY! I also have a similar situation as you where when I was younger she was my role model. It shocked me when someone described her fan base as a cult but when you think about it, it kind of is. It’s also disappointing because some of these younger kids might think that cp isn’t important or bad because their ‘role model’ did it and nothing happened, and that’s the sad reality, cause I used to think that way as well. 😔
