Literally same, I’m 28 and have been active on CZcams since the beginning days so I really thought I had heard of most people from the 2014 era! 😂 never heard of Elle but I will totally watch and enjoy this because I love evolution videos lol

Honestly, Elle's story regarding mental health is a great reference to show how quickly folks are disregarded once they start showing symptoms of the mental issues they've been masking. Everyone calls themselves an advocate until mentally ill people show they're mentall ill. I literally got fired from my last job for talking about my depression.
so sorry to hear this, for me it's the same! i pulled through for a very long time but at some point i couldn't anmore and had to take some time off, my contract was ending soon and they said they didn't want to extend it because i had mental health issues and they didn't want me anymore
it's so true - it looks good to "be" an advocate until you actually have to practice genuine tolerance and understanding. people are generally afraid of what they don't understand and avoid it - which is so detrimental to all of us who need and deserve support.
they legally can’t fire you for that. you should open up a dispute for compensation if you can prove they fired u for that reason
It's like for example emma chamberlain, everyone was so quick to make fun of her for lack of hygiene (despite the fact that I'm pretty sure she was completely trolling her audience after those rumors started) the point was if a CZcamsr really was having issues with their hygiene, it would most likely be a symptom of something larger like possibly depression or other mental health issues. Nobody thought to address that or the fact that Emma has struggled with an ED, which sort of comes hand in hand with depression, so it's really frustrating to see how many people were saying "she's so nasty" "why doesn't she wash her ass" "she's disgusting" over literally one of the most common symptoms of depression, not practicing self-care. Like seriously millennials and gen z are so quick to claim they support mental health issues and the literal millisecond somebody shows symptoms of actually struggling, people immediately turn on them, make fun of them, laugh at them, make horrible videos about them, cancel them, like I don't know why people be acting like humans are subscription services. I searched Emma Chamberlain hygiene the other day because I was thinking about this subject, and there were so many videos of people just ripping into her. Despite the fact that she's one of the sweetest CZcamsrs out there. There's paparazzi videos of her stopping for literally every single fan, every few feet, to take a selfie and say hello to them and she's always so grateful when they tell her how much they love her content. She's so sweet to her fans always. It drives me mad when people act like she isn't human.
@@emacd520 That's a nice idea, but if you don't have the resources/support or mental capacity to successfully do that it's a waste of time. Also if they force you out it's usually because they have something or have fabricated something else on you too. Holding them accountable is a pipe dream made up by Hollywood and internet think pieces.

I felt the same happened with Safiya. She mentioned on a post that she was struggling to put out content, and stopped posting as frequently as she had been doing, and I feel that since then, her views have gone down. She still gets a couple of million views, but it is certainly not the amount of engagement she used to have back in 2019. I love Safiya btw. Her videos are entertaining and wholesome.
I agree with this for sure. She still gets a lot of views, but compared to the amount she was getting a couple years ago it's dropped down a lot.
I think so, yes. I never was subscribed to her or watched her videos but I remember just a couple of years how aggressively her videos were pushed at me. I would find them on my homepage and in the suggestions bar. I don't see them anymore.
I would love an evolution of Safiya some day. She seems to be focusing on weekly lives with her husband but not big uploads like she did before. I just hope she’s finally happy with what she’s doing.
I find it odd cuz I stopped watching her in the beginning of 2019 but have started religiously watching her everyday for the past month or so

It’s crazy how I can relate to elle in the sense of “achieving your goals at 19 and still struggling” not in the sense of becoming famous but in the sense of finally escaping and abusive situations and being on my own, but still not being “happy” like you dreamed you would be and how dangerous it can be to have those expectations without any guidance or support. Never really thought about it that way til you said it out Hannah
I'm not sure how to get this across, but I can understand you on not being as happy as you thought you would be out of and abusive situation. The first time I left my own situation, I suddenly got much, much worse than when I was in it. I went from being able to function and just feeling kinda numb to not being able to get out of bed when I was, theoretically, much better, and I should have thrived. I've realized that it was because I was finally safe to break down. In an abuse situation, stress keeps us alert for the sake of surviving and we learn the system. Once out, you can finally exhale and your body breaks down. I went back a few times to an unhealthy situation because of this. But the beauty is, although you will break down, it is then that healing can begin. Hang in there, I hope you're better.
@D is very correct, I'd also add that trauma when experienced young kinda fucks w you developmentally. So if you're struggling more than your peers, it makes total sense, and you deserve to be safe even if it means you're less productive bc you learned how to be productive in a hellish environment. Especially if you're dealing with mental/physical health problems that went unnoticed bc of abuse/neglect and now have to figure out medications, supports, etc. Gotta keep reminding myself of that one while i struggle in college.

I never watched her content, but this is kind of sad and beautiful at the same time. Sad because CZcams basically screwed her over, but beautiful because she's doing new & amazing things. This also gives me great insight about YT and why I'm struggling as a very micro creator. Thanks Hannah for another wonderful video

"Protect your mental health first, and everything else will fall into place." As someone who's sacrificed grades for my mental health this past semester, it gave me a huge amount of comfort to hear that. I felt like I did myself good.

It really clicked for me now that youtube as a corporation is legitimately responsible for this burnout, and how taking breaks can ruin careers...this is a real workers rights issue, not just some fluffy complaint. The algorithm is created this way on purpose, which also means it can be changed. Thanks for bringing light to the issue

I dont mind that you take your time making these, they are always so well researched and put together. Well worth the wait in my opinion.
From what I've heard about how CZcams informs creators of their analytics and have set up their algorithm, it seems like creator burn-out is part of CZcams's formula. The pressure seems crushing and I have a lot of empathy for how difficult it must be, especially since creators don't feel like they can talk freely about this issue.
THIS. CZcams's entire platform is designed to always have something new for viewers to watch. Therefore, having its content creators drop off and new ones come in is part of the formula. (It's even baked into the terminology: "Trending". The literal definition of the word "trend" is a short period of something that doesn't last.) As a consequence, the algorithm's design burns out its creators. You Tube expects this. It's sad no one informs the creators of this.
I tried for years as a small creator but the analytics ended up stopping me from posting, because I just didn't gain traction, I just kept seeing a decline in views. I tried a different channel to jump on makeup/try-on trends but it wasn't my passion. I thought about the videos I'd make, and how I was going to carry my channels on, very frequently in my spare time. My best videos for views have been some of my very worst videos. I've basically stopped now because it's not worth the time editing for 5 views lol.
December is usually not a great month for me. This is the second December I’ve been let go from a job and anytime there’s big change I have horrible sleeping issues, these uploads keep coming when I’m sleepless at 2 am and I’m just really thankful for Glowmas🖤🖤🖤
I think it would be neat to do evolution of videos on youtubers like elle who arent problematic, or always mentioned on drama channels. It would be refreshing to see some positive videos on youtubers who expanded beyond just this website and what positive influence they have been, Rosanna Pansino comes to mind, she stills does baking videos but shes branched off into doing other things and just recently gifted her sister a mansion next door to her place. I don’t watch her stuff religiously but seeing youtubers who I’ve used to watch five times a week growing and doing wonderful things makes the world seem less depressing and that not every influencer is just out to scam people.
somehow i have never really heard of elle mills before and this video was honestly so interesting! i watched the videos mentioned and she is seriously so talented and hard working. love your evolution of videos so much! i would be so interested in seeing an evolution of bestdressed if you have time for it

I grew up in the same area as elle and remember back in 2016 a friend of mine, who went to school with her, telling me about how elle talked about wanting to be a youtuber for a while, and how cool it was to see her channel grow. Now it’s even cooler to see how she’s surpassed that goal as a creator!

I'm happy you covered Elle! her content always stood out to me for being able to uniquely encapsulate a feeling of warmth, adolescence & nostalgia all at once. plus her vulnerability talking about her mental health resonated a lot me with me. she'll always be one of my favourite content creators.

P.S. After I posted this, I found her on Instagram, where she appears to be thriving. Many people are confused about why she disappeared. I wish she would have at least made a quick community tab post saying she was off CZcams for a while.
Hannah this was such a good evolution of😭 I first heard of Elle when she was really popular a few years back but since I was already an adult her content really wasn’t made for me so I never really vibed with her. HOWEVER this year I found her through her podcast Crazy Stupid Fangirls as I’m an avid watcher of Michelle Platti. Highly recommend that podcast to watchers of this channel, they have the best guests and Elle and Michelle are so sweet!
This is a great video, Hannah. I'd never heard of Elle before this (being a middle aged Mum of two) but she sounds like an amazing young woman and I hope whatever she ends up doing, she finds happiness and success.
This was my favorite evaluation of so far and by far! I never even watched Elle, and she sounds great, but more important to me is that I just love seeing stuff about CZcamsrs who aren’t “dramatube”. 💕💕

I'm glad you brought up the punishment youtube has for creators that take a break. I've been watching the same people mostly since 2008ish and I've noticed that when they take a break that not only do I no longer get their new vids in my recommended or notification but I've even been unsubbed from them. One of my og favorites left a gaming group and took a break due to his parents getting sick or dying (can't remember) and I didn't know until a year later that he was still making content when he came back to his main channel because not only was he never recommended to me but I was even unsubbed. This has happened to me 3 ish times with different creators and I've noticed it happens when they've gone on a 3+ week break or longer.

i would love to see an evolution of the vlogbrothers, especially since their main channel content has basically not changed since like 2007 and they’ve been growing around that channel! To me they’ve been some of the most influential creators for youtube as a whole

I feel like doing an Evolution of CZcams Content would be very interesting considering how vastly the style of videos has changed over the past 14 years.
Elle's story, in regards to her mental health and creator burnout, reminds me a lot of the Dolan Twins. having to constantly be coming up with creative material to appease your millions of subscribers and remain on the top of the CZcams food chain, all while under the age of 21, in the midst of growing up and figuring yourself out, sounds exhausting and debilitating. in their case, doubly so, because while juggling that, they put this added pressure on themselves to suppress a side of their personalities they knew their fanbase wouldn't like. it all eventually came to a head for them as well. a lot very interesting stuff here.

Could you do an evolution of JacksGap/ Jack and Finn Harries? They used to be huge on youtube (back when the British CZcamsrs were all the rage), but they both went to uni and now their content is now about climate change and activism. Could be so interesting!!
