    If anything, SWOOP's video and experience show all of us how to be (or rather, how NOT to be) a better ally and a better friend to people of color and to LGBTQ+ people. It is so, so upsetting that she looked to her friend for much-needed support, and her friend chose not to provide it. It's even more upsetting that her experience is all too common, I imagine.

    Also, can someone please talk about how CZcams won’t let creators say “racism,” “homophobia,” “sexism,” etc. Every time I see a video with these words censored, I get irrationally angry. I know the content creators are only doing it b/c of YT - but can someone please talk about how fucked up that is? Those are not bad or offensive words! CZcams needs to be held accountable for this!

      I think creators in theory “can” but then they get de-monetized. I would say it is more on brands not wanting to be associated with “polemical” topics.
      But totally agree! It is very frustrating having to see creators dance around YT rules to still be able to monetize their videos.

    • @sarahschwartz6657
      @sarahschwartz6657 Před 3 lety +144

      @@juliadandy6019 At the end of the day though, it is youtube making the choice that certain words and verbiage are deemed to not be brand/advertiser friendly, not the companies putting forth the advertisements themselves. There are a lot of youtubers who depend on their videos as a source, or for virtually all of their income, so the threat of de-monetization is censorship in itself. It is very sad because I think some companies likely would be okay with speaking out against racism, but youtube pretty much blocks it, and I do believe that discussing social issues being seen as inappropriate or explicit is something that youtube needs to do better at addressing. Standing up for people shouldn’t be controversial.

    • @fruitygarlic3601
      @fruitygarlic3601 Před 3 lety +31

      a gremlin with sticky hands That's because monetisation is not based on how "safe" your content is, but rather if there are advertisers looking at you or not. A makeup channel, probably run by a center-right neo-liberal (because that's where society is) can get a slap on the wrist for calling out bigotry by name, because brands don't want a face too polarising or rAdIcAl. While large conservative or an-cap CZcamsrs can get away with using slurs, racist dog whistles, and signalling the JQ while maintaining support; the people who market specifically to the alt-right do not care. Also keep in mind how right-wingers have other streams of income online, because they sell lifestyles harder than most fashion influencers. They can literally afford to take the chance.
      And don't even get me started on the literal n@zi videos on this site. Like, with propaganda. Like, where the comment section is full of people with Black Suns and clown Pepes, waxing about how great Lebensraum would have been. Some of these are recommended to me, despite how many of the CZcamsrs I watch are dem-socs or an-coms.

    For any white women who can’t understand how Mykie’s responses to Spankie were hurtful and damaging, imagine you go to a male friend to discuss how sexism has affected you and caused you pain, and they dismiss all of it. They talk about how from their perspective, men actually have it so much harder because of the me too movement. That of course you have your experiences, but they just don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Now imagine you not only face discrimination for your sex, but also the color of your skin. All of the discrimination white women face, black women face + more.

      @whosaprettykitty5076 Před 3 lety +158

      @Jaxtraterrestrial X no one is saying white women do not face misogyny. The only people who say shit like that are men, and that comment isnt exclusive to white women. We're saying that as a WHITE woman, she has advantages over BIPOC and LGBTQ+ because she's a white cis woman. White women do get oppressed for being women- no one is denying that, but at the end of the day, you're still WHITE. You can't see criticisms made towards one person and then bitch about other bad eggs in other communities. You doing this proves you AREN'T listening because instead of absorbing what was said, you're trying to place blame on others. "I know what Mykie said was wrong, but minorities say mean stuff too!". As soon as you say, "but", it becomes obvious that you're invalidating what was said.
      And if you want to call out people for being shitty, why do you have to call out their identity? Jeffree is a shitty person because he is, not because he's gay. For you to bring up the fact that they're gay and at top men you have some sort of problem with them being gay. Mykie didn't focus on the fact that they were shitty people (James isn't shitty, he's just naive and before the drama, became very egotistical but he has humbled himself and grew), but she didnt. What she said was homophobic.

      @Jaxtraterrestrial X oh god. I was with you but i don’t agree on your comparison of blackface and gay guys expressing their “feminine” side. That’s like talking about the drag community. I don’t really see how that’s the same. Blackface was used to make fun of black people and their skin color and portrayed them as clowns. Gays dressing up as woman has no correlation nor should be used against them in anyway. I think people are forgetting that gay people are still minorities. Eventho y’all say the make up business is “directed to woman” (but want equality for all but complain when a “feminine” minority takes over) is kinda stupid. Being a POC black people are not in the light as white people in this business. BUT it’s not the creators fault. THATS THE ONE THING I NEVER UNDERSTAND IS YALL GETTING MAD AND HATING THE CREATOR WHEN ITS THE PEOPLE AND YALL WHO BRING THEM UP EVERYDAY.

SFX about a real person who suffered violence, like the fact that she mentioned it was a rihanna look is so disgusting, literally no words. Fuck you in every way shape or form for minimalizing this thing, especially with how many women die per year throughout the world due to domestic abuse....
      But in my mind, I'm picturing a world were she could have done like a domestic violence SFX for good. Like imagine if instead of clickbating Rihanna in the tittle, she just called it "a talk about domestic violence" without naming real people, and then she could do the bruises and talk the entire time about domestic violence stats in the world and US, how it affects different communities, the fact that men can also be victims, and how abuse isn't just physical violence but also emotional... so like an educational video, with a disclaimer that the bruises were illustrative or to make a point, but should not be taken as her minimising real life abuse, and then she could have donated the profits from the video to a non-profit for domestic violence and left links for others to do same. Still topical, but educational.

    there’s one thing i do want to say; i think people online often misuse the word “gaslight”. those texts from mykie to spankie are awful, no doubt, but they don’t seem like gaslighting. i understand how language works and i’m not a descriptivist, but i think the word gaslight is very important. it refers to a very specific type of abuse where the abuser makes the victim doubt their sanity. it comes from a play (later adapted to film) called gaslight. a married couple, gregory and paula, move into a house, and gregory slowly starts hiding and moving things and blames it on paula. at one point when paula hears foot steps in the attic and sees a gas light dim and brighten, gregory tells her that she’s imagining things. he puts his pocket watch in her purse and accuses her of stealing it. she starts to think she is crazy and can’t trust her memory or perception. this is gaslighting. i don’t mean to diminish how bad mykie’s texts were at all, i just think the term gaslighting is very important and should not be misused. (this isn’t to say mykie didn’t gaslight spankie, i don’t know, i wasn’t there. it’s just that the texts spankie shows don’t really look like it. this has nothing to do with spankie, it’s more generally just about how we use the term gaslight
