    Hi friends! So today's video we are talking about what has been happening recently with Patrick Starr and how sometimes being an "unproblematic" guru can lead to your down fall. I am really interested in hearing what you guys think about this topic and I will see you in the next one!

    He overestimated how popular he still is. He doesn’t have a fan base of young people who are willing to blindly and naively defend him. His core fanbase is smaller than it once was and the audience is probably older and less likely to accept the behaviour. Plus because of the “non-problematic” persona he tried to keep, he probably attracted a following of people who don’t have tolerance for this kind of thing

I think after that big clusterfuck of drama he did actually take a step back and reevaluate the choices he was making,and where he was headed. I think a lot of the issue here is the timing. Jeffree and Nikita already had that “bad girl” rep prior to the pandemic so no one was surprised when they continued being their, for lack of a better word, shitty selves. However, Patrick is trying to pull a 180 in a time where people are really paying attention to how influencers are handling this situation and it’s just not a cute look for him at all. I also think a lot of his behaviour is coming from desperation and he’s trying to find solitude in anyone who’ll support him which unfortunately are these problematic people. He’s always seemed fake, the failure and desperation has just brought it out at the worst possible time.

There's always been anti-Asian sentiments and Covid has heightened the racism. Elderly people (and young people) and getting attacked and assaulted for no reason and it's so sad and disgusting to see. Many Asian& Asian American celebs are sharing information but it isn't catching wind with the media. It would be great to have a spot on your platform to share this information and spread awareness so people know and actively condemn the violence. Through BLM we made it clear that it isnt enough to not be racist, we must be anti-racist and activated - we need to help our fellow Asian community and spread the word because this violence needs to end.

    Two thoughts: Firstly, to speak to why being “messy” hasn’t worked for Patrick...I can’t help but notice that all of the people you listed are thin, conventionally attractive people (if exclude Nikita then they’re all white too). Looking at Patrick, a plus size POC, it doesn’t surprise me that the reception isn’t as warm. (Let me be clear though in saying that I don’t think ANY of what Patrick did is okay.) Secondly, I think to really succeed in the beauty space rn, you have to not only be personable, but also bring something new to the space. Take Robert Welsh for example. He blew the heck up in the past year largely because he brought years of professional experience. He really touts makeup theory and makeup for the average person, something we don’t see much anymore. Similarly innovative is Bailey Saiaran’s Murder Makeup Monday (which Robert has also emulated to huge success). I think that combo is really sets people up for success rn.

All of the influencers who thrive off of being problematic are white or white passing and while I think Patrick is pathetic and attention seeking it does have a factor in how he is being though about right now. EDIT: Also I think that the whole tactic of doing something controversial before a launch to drum up hype only works if you are consistent with your image. • @l.l274
      @l.l274 Před 3 lety +20

      I think a big part of it is auidence though. Both Ricegum and Idubbbz auidence were (mostly) young white boys who watched/liked edgier content, sprinkled in with a lil bit of self righteous attitude. This is partly because both of them made content on calling people out: Idubbz being his content cop series whilst ricegum made "these kidz must be stopped" which is still a form of commentary/call out. So to their auidences, being seen as a hypercite or a liar in a situation is far worse than anything else a person could have done (such as destruction of property and saying a slur) because both their auidences care more about image and a facade of moral superiority than actural bad behaviour.

The only thing that has put a dent in Ian's career is the fact his girlfriend got an Only Fan's. Cause you know, his girlfriend getting an Only fan's is far worse to his auidence than his common use of slurs. This is partly because Ian in the past mocked sex workers so he than attracted an auidence that also mocks sex workers as well.

  • @dezdovalina
    @dezdovalina Před 3 lety +32

    I think another reason for Patrick's inability to make money off of poor behavior just shows more racism in the beauty community. White influencers, like Tana or jeffree, were able to get away with capitalizing on drama, but partick is a person of color, therefore he isn't getting the same blind acceptance and forgiveness. Don't get me wrong, I don't support these actions, but I DO think it's important to acknowledge.
    Update: Frank's reply has changed my opinion. Nikita is a person of color who has built a career in controversy. A bigger sign of racism in the beauty community is the lack of support. It's harder for black creators to grow and excel, despite making good content.

      not necessarily. nikita somehow manages to stay relevant despite constantly lying, appropriating black culture, and profiting off black outrage. She's been going at it for years now and she is still profitable (just like Tana and Jaffar).
      nevertheless, racism is still a problem in the beauty community. i just don't think there are enough bipoc beauty influencers to support your claim.
      (Edit) If anything, racism in the beauty community is reflected more in the lack of recognizable bipoc beauty influencers.

      I don't think it's about race in this specific situation. Jeffree, Tana, Trisha, Nikita, they've all cemented their reputations in being problematic and controversial No one gets surprised when they do something bad because we already have low expectations for them. But for Patrick who brands himself as someone "unproblematic" and never got into scandals before, the damage to his reputation is going to be harsher because people trusted him.

    I have always hated that as a society we've rewarded people's controversial and bad behavior with attention and support. Way back in Kindergarten a teacher told us not to pay attention to the kid acting out in class because they only wanted the attention and that was probably the most impactful early life lesson I learned. Unfortunately when CZcamsrs (or celebrities) get so popular, they're almost too big to fail and no matter what controversy they create, people will still support them.

I honestly think and hope a rise of true professionals will gradually have more room in the beauty community as people grow tired of the drama and product dishonesty.
