An example of a "true" bastard sword / hand-and-a-half sword

- The term longsword (or "long sword") is often incorrectly applied to one-handed arming swords (also called knightly sword or riding sword) in video games and pen & paper RPGs. And then there is confusion about what a "bastard sword" or "hand-and-a-half sword" is.
So in an attempt to clarify the terms I show a good example of a "true" bastard sword in this video, with a distinctive handle length and shape as well as overall size that makes it sort of a hybrid between a longsword and an arming sword.
Also included is a brief comparison to a greatsword, sometimes called a "true" two-handed sword or Zweihander.
Arms & Armor's reproduction of a mid/late 15th century English sword, shown in this video:

Bastard sword is the bastard child of a longsword and an arming sword.
Actually it only has one and half parents. The grip can't marry both hands.
hence why its a bastard....lol
Stolen comment
It’s also a cousin to the Asshole Axe
or it could have just been bastardized, which is a process that doesn't involve intercourse.
So it's like the bastard son of the long sword & arming sword.
Bryan Johnstone Oh geez, that is terrible.
Tristan Bigornia Just because they weren't married it's terrible that they had a kid? It's none of your business what happens between two consenting swords!

Bryan Johnstone Guys, it's SWORD and BOARD, not SWORD on SWORD! Dual Wielding is not natural!

1,000 dollars for that shit? I can buy the same thing in skyrim for 25 septims. Talk about inflation.
it's the import tax.
To be fair, all you need to do in skyrim is take an iron bar and some leather straps and throw them into a forge.
you can make one out of sheet steel, but trust me it wont be anything like the profesional sword. and its lots of work. if you want something to mess around with get some cheap steel for 10 bucks get ur angle grinder and make something simple. :)
toledan swords are a lot cheaper
Ha sword with a soul of samurai is no match for swords distributed by strange women lying in ponds. They represent the true power of the government.
Are you repressing me? [TRIGGERED]
All those damned iron sticks stand for is the violence inherent in the system!
But the greatest weapon of all is a mandate from the masses!

It’s my favorite too. I mainly use it two handed so recently I’ve used the “two handed sword” but bastard sword is still great.

One of my favorites for The Fantasy Trip. The output and versatility makes it great for many 13+ ST setups!
Gosh bastard sword is so cool in warband.
*Swords 101:*
The pointy end goes into your opponent, the pommel is a lie, and never fart on anyone's balls.
Any questions?
Hahaha
A bastard sword is also versatile; you can use your offhand for a shield etc. as Skallagrim noted, but you could also change grips depending on the situation.
Go in with a shield, and it gets broken or stuck or what-have-you? 2H time.
Go in 2H, then find a shield or need to grapple? 1H time.
Need to deliver a more powerful blow? Drop your shield and grab the sword with both hands.
etc.
Fubuki reference?
I loved that comedic cultist bit. Do more of those.
That's not cultist. That is what the Japanese believed back then. They believed that everything had a soul in some way or form.
Yeah but cultists who are so wrapped up in Japanese culture surely would believe it as well.
Adam The word you're looking for is "weeaboo", dear.
Samir Malik but that was because of the shinto religion so unless the katana fanboys are shinto believers its just bullshit
Samir Malik You really didn't have to type all of that man, I understand exactly where you are coming from haha
I gotta say, the Bastard sword is one of my favorites, just because you get that range of options for its use. You can go two handed, sword and shield, sword and buckler, use it while on horseback, and probably some other things not mentioned. So it gives you a lot of adaptability. And adaptability can be a powerful tool.

As a Bastard sword and Falchion main (with Euro weapons), this is invaluable for explaining just what a bastard sword is! Thanks! Was struggling with the exact phrasing.
Who gives a shit what it is called like. All that matters are its stats. Can you please tell us how much dps does it deal in the next video.
It deals 1d8+your strength modifier. If you crap on the blade the enemy must make a constitution save of difficulty class 12 or suffer infection.
+Sheob 多形体 Depends on whether you use the sword the conventional way, use half-swording or the risky finishing move: End Him Rightly. You need a threaded pommel for that one though.
+Sheob 多形体 It's actually very important. Longswords get a completely different moveset to one-handed swords.
+Ring0Resident Interesting how the 3.5 version get it all wrong when you think about it. As a bastard sword is be 1d10 and a longsword 1d8, I personnaly think it should be the other way around!
B strength and dex. its great for quality builds. Its especially good, because it can be enchanted with all enchanting spells
I love this historical perspective stuff. It's cool to see what was and then how it is reclassed after modern metrics are added. What a lot of people. Don't realize is that the threshold of human knowledge was reached in the late 1700s. Prior to that point, knowledge just wasn't generated at the same rate.

It makes (kind of) sense to call the bastard sword, a "bastard sword".
The arming sword (or the short-sword), is a "true" short sword in its own right, with shorter blade and handle.
Same goes for the long-sword here, its a true longsword with longer handle and blade length.
While a bastard sword, is not a "true" long or short-sword. It is a bastard, not a thoroughbred in the long-sword or short-sword bloodlines.
Kinda cool.
Bendik Eidshaug But a "true" short sword would be the roman gladius, or an ancient european bronze sword, both of which are noticeably shorter than an arming sword.
Hell, some ancient bronze swords are classified by archeologists as rapiers, despite being in size closer to daggers.
It's all silly modern lexicology, due to our need to classify stuff.
Lindybeige uploaded earlier today a video on polearms, showing how silly our need to categorize stuff is.
*****
That's how I also see them.
Yet, they are noticeably bigger and heavier than daggers, and are also used differently.
Just goes to show how easy it would be to make a weird classification.
Zombigotron Not strictly, if I remember correctly. George Silver used the term short sword to distinguish a normal backsword (ie 1h backsword at his period) from a rapier. I think shortsword=gladius or similar may be another D&Dism...
Jim Heaton
Well, there you go, it all depends on context and frame of reference, there are no universal definitions.
Silver calls a backsword a "short sword", even though it's not a actual "short" sword, but because it is shorter than a rapier.
Medieval manuals call longswords such, because they are longer than one handed swords.
And what about viking swords, and frankish swords, and germanic and anglo-saxon swords?
I agree about the D&D part, but my personal suspicion is that we, the modern people, try to impose a false classification system, simply for our convenience - because it's easier to throw swords into common bags, but this poses the danger of ignoring important details.
For example: many late viking swords look quite similar to early arming swords, but they are actually quite different and are used quite differently.
True. I think the idolisation of strict taxonomy is a modern(ish) thing - post Enlightenment thinking. Silver was pretty clear that the perfect length for a sword was measured from the physical stature of the wielder (which this thread amazingly hasn't touched on yet...)
One thing that I feel needs to be mentioned about using a bastard sword in one hand; you have really huge reach compared to two hands, it was extremely effective to switch the grip and usage during a fight as it was not only a suprising element because of the sudden technique change but you also - out of nowhere - get a nice reach advantage. Which is great. Anyway, Thanks for the great stuff you post, Skall, you've learned me much. I really do hope you are getting better day by day (from the accident), good luck to you.
That intro made me laugh so much haha "soul of the samurai "
What about daggers, sword-breakers or even swords in the offhand? Would really like to hear about their use!
EnCey2 Using a sword and dagger was fairly common and had techniques of it's own, although the techniques were meant for Sabers and Rapiers rather than the with examples shown in the video. I believe Skal did a video on dual wielding.
EnCey2 If i recall correctly, Iberian schools of fighting styles (spanish and portuguese) favor the use of a lighter sword and an off-hand dagger.
One interesting thing as well, Bastard Swords, were really popular with Iberians as well.
***** It depends on school, i presume. Some say that the rapier/dagger combo is best (rapier for longer reach, dagger for parrying and closer encounters, when it's too late and back up really long rapier, as it's mostly stabber, and not a good cutter), whlie others might say that sword/buckler are better.
First combo is optimised for offence with bits of defence, second is the other way around (talking about the offhand, not the sword itself)
***** The existence of parrying daggers that aren't really easier to carry than bucklers would seem to be proof that isn't strictly true. Big shields are great, but if bucklers were strictly superior to daggers the specialized daggers wouldn't exist.
EnCey2 I use an "Arkansas Toothpick" in my off hand when I want to go two-weapon with my bastard sword.
Not all people who prefer Japanese swords are crazy Skall, don't lose faith in us lol.
*****
Don't worry, I'm well aware of that. :)

Bastard is definitely the prettier of the two though.

Can we please talk about how Marth's sword from Fire Emblem is called "Falchion" when the blade he's wielding doesn't even remotely represent a Falchion? .-.
MastaGambit Because in Japan naming things with names from another lenguage is ''cool'' (''Falchion'' is written on katakana iirc, much like ''Fire Emblem'' is written that way in the japanese games, so the most of the characters would most likely be saying things like ''Farchion'' and ''File Embruem'' and the like when mentioning them).
Ya know, much like when people name things with Japanese names for the ''cool'' factor, tis' literally the same thing.
ckueckman
Well I mean yeah sure maybe back in the day when FE Shadow Dragon was first created.
MastaGambit
They still do that shit ALL THE TIME, they just have learned to avoid things like the Falchion deal... most of the time.
MastaGambit Or the fact that never once in history has the word "glaive" referred to a throwing weapon?
To be fair to the games
Falchion is the name of the sword not the type of sword.
Sure it is kinda of dumb but then you see the etymological meaning of Excalibur and you see that it always kind of is
2 handed use only, UNLESS your name is THE MOUNTAIN!

Thanks for this video! I am working on a fantasy novel featuring a character who is meant to be a master swordsman, and your videos have helped me immensely in picturing his scenes and giving me an idea of what types of things he would say and do in regards to his craft. Also, he actually uses a bastard sword generally so this video has been particularly helpful in getting things about the character correct.

SO A QUESTION! I often wonder why a person would choose to use a Bastard Sword with a shield over an Arming Sword with a shield. To me it's kind of redundant. Yes there's the reach factor but it really isn't much (as shown in your video), so then why?
I believe the choice of a Bastard Sword over an Arming Sword comes down to versatility. If you might come under ranged attacks from bows, the Bastard Sword gives you the ability to use a shield in your off hand. If your shield becomes too damaged or lost, you can use the Bastard Sword as a Long Sword.
Instead of carrying 2 different swords you only need to carry one. It might not be as effective as using a sword of the proper type, but it would cut down on encumbrance.
And expense!
A bastard sword is what you would choose if you trained in both longsword and shield and sword techniques and your main kit is shield and sword. If you lose your shield on the battlefield or at camp and you are stirring the cooking pot and your shield is at your tent and your camp gets attacked you can properly use longsword techniques and on the other side of that it isn't awkward when using with the shield.
If you just train in sword and board you wouldn't get a bastard sword and if you train only in longsword you wouldn't get one either, but if you train in both it is the most practical.
Because it's so damn cool!
Because sums bastards wear that title like armour and may as well get the sword that goes with that armor
It's nice to see you sword skill has been greatly improved from you early video us.
Another good video.
I always enjoy learning this stuff from you, Skall!
One of the things I was really happy about in 5th edition d and d is that they removed bastard sword from the weapons list. And a longsword is still a sword you can use in one or two hands. It used to be a bastard sword was a sword that you could only use in two hands unless you had exotic weapon proficiency. And on the weapon graph it looked like a bastard sword was claymore sized and a longsword was a regular longsword. Now there's no weapon graph and it's up to your imagination.
Long... sword? Well this is getting too technical for me.
It called a long sword cuz it's a sword that's also long and a sword
@@bellepeppermint yeah it's pretty complex, if youd like I can also explain battle axes, but you're on your own for spears
@@bellepeppermint yeah man spears are wack. It's like spear but plural so theres more spears and idk about that shit dude

***** I can see a lot of editing work went into this video, and it turned out really well! I like when you suddenly as if by magic had a shield and then a buckler, looked good. Also ofc stabbing the imaginary voice off camera in the beginning gave me a chuckle as well. Good explanation of the differences between the 3 types of swords.

Love the way you always stamp on the weebs.
I can't believe it, I learned a lot from Souls games about weapons and armors, this is the first time that I really get to test my knowledge about swords. Thanks Souls games and thank you for the extra infos
I love your sense of humor so much. Keep making great content and great jokes.
If it's a longer sword they would call it a long sword- brilliant
So how do flamberge or flame bladed swords hold up as actual usable weapons? are they just decorative?
CamoCam0 There are some of both. Some swiss used flaberge great swords. Some moro kriss were definitely used, but the shapes are definitely for mystical decorative purposes. Some people will say that the wavy shape gives you a longer effective cutting edge per blade length, but I don't really buy that it is a meaningful advantage, vs more length per weight.
You can find a wavy edge even on some pole arms, it wasn't that rare. I think it's a psicological advantage (your weapon looks more intimidating), and I don't think it matters that much. But I guess a wavy edge may act a bit like a saw edge without being wider, inflicting a larger wound... I don't think it was a major advantage, but sure it looks cool!
CamoCam0 They were great for cutting massive loaves of bread, common in those days I'm sure.
Ok, I dont have any knowledge on this, but surely a wavy edged blade would be easier to pull out of an enemy once thrust into? As far as i understand, the early stages of rigour mortis set in almost immediatly. Therefore, a blade with a wavy edge would create a thrust wound greater in size then the actual blade, making it easier to pull out.
This is literally just speculation, if im right I guess im a genius ha
Blades are not difficult to pull out of flesh. That whole suction thing is pure fallacy.
that bastard sword you use for an example is absolutely beautiful I hope to see a review of it in the future.
your "attempt" at explaining basically made me an expert
HAH! You just had to get in a dig at the katana cultists, huh? Can't say I blame you.
I thought this was pretty clear: ”Can it be used well with one hand and with two? Bastard sword.”
i love your/yalls channel!! any video u put out is entertaining no matter the subject thank u for all the good stuff
Thanks for the video great way to clarify the differences in the swords and I'll make sure to check such differences before I purchase.
Man, Dark Souls had me going! Thinking a Bastard Sword is akin to a greatsword/Claymore and longer than a Longsword...
I don't really think it's nit picking to say that what a manufacturer calls their reproduction replica product is wrong; correct is correct and wrong is wrong. So, call it like you see it.

Someone should try a drinking game from every time he said 'sword'.

What always grinds my gears is when they call certain polearms lances when they are clearly not designed to be use by cavalry.
Dracul JOSHI One of my neighboors once called halberd a lance.
Raho Vart As a swiss person... that hurts me somewhere deep down...
Dracul JOSHI "lance" is the french name for "spear" and the name come from the verb "lancer" which mean "to throw" so it's definitely not restrain to cavalry spear.
Uryendel Not in english.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lance
The term from the 17th century came to refer specifically to spears not thrown, used for thrusting by heavy cavalry, and especially in jousting. A thrusting spear which is used by infantry is usually referred to as a pike. -quoted from etymology

8:18 Nice edit. I really like this transition.
What are your thoughts on the sword-staff?
+Skallagrim, how would claymores fit into this taxonomy? Would they count as "longswords"?
+Cameron Nedland
I'd say claymores are kind of in between longswords and greatswords. Closer to longswords though.
+Skallagrim is "Claymore" a medieval term or a modern one?
Also, sometimes you see a wrapped blade or extended handle above the crossguard on two-handers... what is it called and what is it for?
+Froggy711 That is called a ricasso.
+Froggy711 Dunno the name for it but those grips you'll most commonly on swords we call "great swords". They're there to let you grip above the crossguard because great swords are very long (extremely so), so when you eventually fought your way into the enemy formation your enemies would likely be too close together to effective swing your giant sword, so you'd grab that handle above the crossguard to half-sword, or turn your giant sword into a makeshift spear.
A claymore is neither. A claymore is a big fuckin' slab of sharpened metal imbued with the spirit of a blood-thirsty Highlander fighting to protect the lands of his ancestors. It is wielded by another bloodthirsty Highlander also fighting against the invading English. When the Scot wielding the sword is felled by a flow of at least
Best intro you've made so far!
Terminological suggestion:
Longsword: a sword designed to be used in two hands, but which can be used in one hand at a pinch.
Bastard sword: a sword designed to be used in one hand, but which can be used in two hands at a pinch (i.e. when you lose the thing on your other hand, whether it be a shield or the reins of your horse).

No. Aragorn's sword (Anduril) is specifically a longsword, and feels clumsy when used one-handed. It's only slightly shorter than the minimum length for what would be considered a greatsword.

Can a bastard sword be classified as a one handed longsword?
Here we go again...
John snoooow
Ben Ashton I just realized that the Longclaw (Jons sword) is a bastard sword.
Yeah Longclaw is a bastard sword but its pommels is badly shaped
They're very blatant about it in the books.
Well shit, could've looked cool... I obviously haven't read the books.
Rodrigo Ugarte I'm not sure about the classification in the show but in the books the classification is different than in real world(by Skallagrim's classification). In the novels longswords are one handed swords(what we would call arming swords), and bastard swords(or hand and a half) fall in between longswords and greatswords.
I really like swords that are this versatile, because I feel that it allows for a larger skill set to be utilized when fighting, depending on what the situation calls for

Nothing beats the one handed sword and shield combination
Quite a lot, in fact, does, sometimes. Sword and board is a situational style known to fail against even non-pointy pointy sticks. The only definitively bad fighting styles has be turning up armed with soft fruit. Even the black-pudding fighting style has killed somebody XD
Bacon Fish I prefer the going to fast down the stairs killing method or the car crashing combination even though they also get beaten by the non pointy seatbelt and/or the careful observation tactic.
I also did not consider bullet shooting weapons, sniper rifles and weapons of mass destruction or Wolverine's claws, so the shield and sword combination can be considered optimal and maybe that is why it was used for thousands of years

+Scho0rschi True, though in a line battle they can really do a number on a shieldwall. I find flail and shield is a good counter for sword and board in single combat, just need awareness so you dont tangle up or ding yourself in the head
This video was extremely informative for people just getting interested in historically accurate weapon information.
My favorite sword variety has always been the bastard. Thanks for the video!
I've heard the term bastard sword for about as long as I've been collecting (almost 20 years), but I've never really been clear on what it meant. Thanks for the clarification.
I saw this video the day after I got my new hanwei longsword, and it made my day!
I watched a couple of your videos before, bu subscribed after the first 30 seconds of this video.

Great videos. Bastard swords are at the top of my favorites...for what ever reason I simply like them.
