  • We might think we know the names of swords, but often we have been misled. Well it's time to clear the confusion, if there is any confusion to be had for your understanding of proper sword names might be right, or is it?

A bastard sword is called a bastard sword because while it is a longsword and designed to be used primarily in 2 hands, the smaller size and shorter handle makes it more effective to be used in 1 hand if you wanted to. It isn't as good as an arming sword in that regard, or as good as a larger longsword used 2 handed, but it can do both well enough. So it is sort of the bastard child between the two.

    I think I may've figured it out:
-Dagger - to stab things, carve flutes and cut your dinner
-Shortsword - halfway between daggers and arming swords. Mostly for stabbing, but it can cut.
-Arming Sword - standard one-handed swords. Best balance, and work nice with a shield.
-Bastard Sword - halfway between an arming sword and a longsword. More versatile than other types, and my personal favourite
-Longsword - the large, two-handed sword, that isn't meant to be used with a shield or just one hand (which isn't to say that you can't, but it's a bad idea). This is the point where swords start leaning away from finesse and towards brute force.
-War Sword - halfway between longsword and greatsword: more in reach and force, but less in control. Defintely can't be used with one hand.
-Greatsword - the largest type of sword. Made with the simple purpose of "pulverize". It has the impressive reach and probably quite some momentum.

i hear the term "claymore" thrown around alot about swords that look like your great sword so where would that terminology fit in or where does it come from?

You said a greatsword should come up to your head, but my question is, are you shorter or taller than average? Does that affect that, or should the sword for your build usually match that idea?

Another funny question is there such a thing as a huge great sword ? like the Frysian Hero Grutte Pier (Pier Gerlofs Donia) he had a great sword of 2.13 meters tall, would they call it a great sword or a huge great sword ?

Thank you! Your video cleared up what type of sword I have and now I know what the proper damage is that I'll be giving the zombies. I did see once in a book of arms about the Arming sword and I thought it was odd they were calling a long sword an arming sword but I remis I never looked into it. Thank you again!

Dark Souls seems to be pretty accurate with its terminology.

So basically (notice my capitalisation) a Long Sword is a great sword and a Great Sword is a long sword, while a Short Sword is just a short sword

Thankyou! I was starting to become aware that the names of swords weren't exactly what I thought they were, now you've cleared it up for me.
