Here's a really brief guide. Hope the sun isn't too distracting, I didn't notice the clouds parted until it was too late!
The video is equipped with subtitles, just turn them on.

I'm a 25 years old HEMA instructor and sword performer from Poland. I've been fencing since I was 12, evolving through sport fencing, polish saber, kenjutsu, to finally settle on renaissance german longsword (go Team Meyer!).
I do blacksmithing for a living. Feel free to review my crafts at:
www.audentia.eu
Now go throw some cuts! - Sport
Finally, knowledge that we *really* need: "How to be a sword owner and not be an obnoxious twat at the same time".
Wut
Thats impossible
"I want to leanr the longsword"
"A slight smile is what goes best with a sword" i feel like there's a deep meaning behind this but i can't quite make it out, still a great qoute to keep in mind ^^
Chikirin - Smiling slightly relaxes almost all the muscles from your collar bone up. Now your shoulders are relaxed and highly mobile. Scowling or other such fierce face-making does the exact opposite: stiff, inflexible, immobile.
It’s just the boring shit in movies where the hero keeps making all those straight angry faces like so serious and the villain has an evil lough , he meant to get over this stupid old stuff because they are boring , smiling in the spirit of an athlete and people should learn that , they say “ be a beast , but be nice”
"A slight smile is what goes best with a sword," a quote for the ages right there.
So Alan, in your videos you taught us how to wield a sword and some basic techniques. When is the video about brewing witcher potions and bombs coming up?
I'm waiting for signs tutorial, yrdin and quen could be useful in a hockey game
Well, here's a 5 minute guide that is 13 minutes long. Neat, huh?
Also, a small addendum: HEMA is not limited to longsword. It studies all kind of weapons, as well as unarmed fighting techniques. Remember the nut-biting iconography?
nice video
great vid dude - shame the sun was behind you
spode czyjego młota wyszedł twój mieczur?
Yo. Have a look at the parang lading. Some schools use it offensively, probably like any other short blade, but some schools use them by placing them along the forearm for a more defensive usage. Pretty neat. It might lack the distance and speed, but makes up for it by having better leverage and probably a deeper cut if it does connect
I can't learn things for unarmed situations, just foil/small shield and little more... any suggestion in youtube?
"Fiorerists are people too, inferior, but still people"
Savage.
Id assume you were making up those people talked about in your second point of how not to be obnoxious, but I met one recently. I was showing my new (and relatively sharp) sword to a friend while we were with a group of guys, one of them gawked at the thing and insisted he hold it, my friend passed it to him and before I could say "dont let him handle that" my worst fear of him fingerfucking the blade turned out to be entirely too conservative, as he started flourishing it. The guys all scattered as the moron spun about flailing, and I demanded he stop, only to have him thrust right at me! Just as I thought "right, Im getting the bat now" he stops and thrusts the sword straight into concrete.
Now I treat my swords like guns, I wont even speak of them if im not in polite, respectful company.
So he managed to pierce the concrete? If so, then at least that's impressive. Or do you mean that he had the tip balancing? Still, sorry that some jackass was swinging a dangerous weapon without even asking your permission.
That situation calls for seconds to called and the would be swordsman called to the field lol
That guy would have been kicked out immediately and never invited back for any reason. How disrespectful. And I don't even own a sword!
damn, I just started Fiore and I didn't realize the people were like this :(
If ur friend didnt take ce of smthing u love...stop being friend to that idiot!...😑
I love how I complete a quest everytime you move onto another topic.
What game is the sound from? It's killing me!

Hey ! A brazilian longsword student here!
keep making movies and "basics", we need this!
and, great job with "do this and don't do that" with a longsword!
see ya!
Guys guys... You don't need all this nonsense. Just take your sword, unscrew the pommel and trow it at your enemy to end him rightly.
This is historically accurate ^^
Slash Le Pew
Three people who have been ended rightly “liked” your comment.
Tis but a scratch.
for honor reference
This is the way. ⚔️
This joke is not old enough >.>
He is also. a student. of the, Christopher. Walken. School, of english.
Haha, that was actually funny.
What?
omg, when I read this, clarity came
ahahahaha
U SIR ARE A GENIUS
Holy shit I thought he was gonna cut off an arm or at least dislocate a shoulder. If I had to sword fight this guy and he did that I'd just give up and admit the water's too deep to tread.
Raumance yup, turn around and go back to the training grounds and eat and sleep longsword until you can watch him do it and say, "Weak!"
Funny enough, he dueled someone and almost killed that challenger, the challenger wasn't killed because he stopped the killing blow inches away from his head.
"Because a balanced sword just flows from a cut into a cut *proceeds to kill 20 people within 5 seconds*
Lol, he roasted Fiore Dei Liberi at the end. That'll get the sauerkraut and spaghetti flying across the room in a heartbeat.
thats one nice backround
You slavic folks really are the HEMA MVPs nowadays, aren't you? I love it!
Man, this is absolutely golden content for me as I am an aspiring swordsman, this guy is very knowledgeble! Thank you for this, will follow every video!
Watching you always brings ones pleasure. Thank you for your teachings.
Wow, very insightful. You really know your way around a sword. If I didn't know better, I'd say you were an immortal who was preaching upon the dao of the sword for mortals.
This is absolutely one of my new favorite videos on CZcams. 👏👏👏
This guy sounds like Christopher Walken
was thinking the same thing
Me too!
well, he is not from an english speaking country. show some respect. At least he bothers with english.
His german pronounciations are perfect unlike most of the angolaxons who just dont manage to pronounce anything from liechtenauer in a way that a german would recognise it.
Frosttyy12 I'm fucking dead right now 😂. I couldn't place who it was but you're right. Not an insult either! Always liked the way he spoke
yeaaah if only he would pause more and put emphasis on the last word of his statements
This is my favorite content to watch. You're awesome man. Keep it up.
Absolutly fantastic. The best vídeo about longsword use I've ever seen. Thank you so much men
This is some seriously helpful information for everyone who's trying to do some creative work (writing books, doing some animations and so on). Thx for your videos! :-)
Finally found something that covers the full basics of basics :D
Your deep voice and accent make you sound like a villain!
I hope I never invade your world. Except when I have a rapier and a tower shield
Or beer!
Estoc and Buckler, Lets do this....
Hahahahaha 🍻
Maybe an arming sword and tower shield. Better off using the rapier with a dagger....
I just watched how well a longsword can perform against such a set up in well trained hands lol I wouldn't want to be on the pointy end of a sharp one no matter what I'm bringing to the fight lol
A bit late to the party but I really appreciate the subtitles! Thank You!
love your videos! I'd love to see a video of you explaining the differences between Italian and German longsword styles
10:43 i will forever referance this to the countless people brandishing their understanding of HEMA on youtube to thrash movies, games, and other works of entertainment and art. There are so many.
YEEY, Alan's back! Misssed you, man :)
Awesome video with an epic backdrop. Awesome Skwisgaar Skwigelf stlye accent too.

Outstanding
Your videos made me in love with this "sport" , I really hope I can find some trainers in Amsterdam (NL) and start it ASAP.
really I enjoy your teachings so much. Why are you so underrated ?
you should duel with Skallagrim
Hakan Karaağaç skal would get destroyed, I love his channel and he most certainly knows the theory but he still needs more practice, afterall he would be facing a hema instructor who's been training for 13 years. Also his accident doesn't really hel
@@whatthereq
What about Metatron?
@@aaronjacobamadorsalazar1934 I don't think Metatron practice more than Skal. I would say Scholagladiatoria or perhaps on a slim chance, Shadiversity. Maybe they can one day gather up with Kohutovic and Adorea too.
@@aaronjacobamadorsalazar1934
Metatron is easily at the bottom of this list, even accounting for Skals injuries. He's a talker not a fencer, and this is quite evident in his sparring videos.
@@damian2924 Shadiversity, ha ha, good one.
Greetings from Brazil!!! Nice video and guide!!!
The last minute and a half is brilliant!
I don't have any desire for sword fighting, I don't own a sword. I came here from a survival knife video. But dude you video was entertaining and I learnt lots. Great video dude!!!!
About the whole "looking like a weeaboo" thing, in order to be one, you have to reject your own culture and try to be Japanese just based on the little information you got from media such as anime. You can use Japanese-esque things without being a weeaboo as long as you keep in touch with your own culture. Just thought I tell you.
shut weeb
Asian SWEG Very funny...
Cade Thumann 👌👌👌
+juicy nuggets Don't worry. I have a power that negates the power of a flying/thrown pommel. Or rather, I live in a dimension where those things don't work as well. I live in real life LOL :)
+juicy nuggets And I knew they were just messing with me. I felt like messing back for the fun of it.
that fiore joke :D
i like fiore :(
cool 13 minutes worth of info in a 5 minute guide. Thats what i call value for money!
I've just started Hema. Longsword, of course, and I follow your channel religiously.
I suck, which is natural at the beginning, but I'm confident that will change some day.
Actually my biggest problem is that I'm a former Savateur(Savate aka french boxing), so my instructor is always telling me to calm down lol. :D I'm a bit too agressive in combat/sparring so I need to work on that as well.
But that disadvantage has also proven to be an advantage. Savate is a very flexible martial art, so at least I've picked up leg movements easier then non/ex martial artists.
Anyways, I'm waiting to see more videos from you, preferably instructional.
Hi from Croatia!
the sword maintenance part is great!
If Christopher Walken was a Polish swordsman
That's 1 so far so good. Subscribed
Nothing better than a european man with a deep voice explaining european martial arts ey?
Holy shit you still alive???? Keep making more video!!! Ijust recently picked up longsword and want to learn more cool drills
Awesome video, thanks! Informative and funny!
Awesome video, very informative
great video. I was wondering what was written on the side of your sword?
Haha I just started fiore as my first martial arts and I had to laugh at your fiore comment. You got me to subscribe! Great video
Man, your videos are cool and funny. Especially the "chapters". 😂
Zdravo Alan, I only came across this cool channel recently. That custom XVa sword that you are using, looks like a really well made example of the late medieval longsword. You mentioned that the overall sword is 127 cm's in length. How long is the blade portion itself if I may ask ??
Great video!
nice video. what do you think about the swords of viktor berbekusz?
Nice speed in the cuts!
But what do you have against posing in Ochs (given that it is properly executed, and not like you did to show what not to do)?
Cool video. Learned a lot...
hi , i wanted to say good job on the videos i really like them and i would like to know if i want to learn the hema and krabi krabong ways how do i do that without a sword and without going to a school beacause they are expensive.
keep doing these grate videos
see you soon :)
Damn, this guy is a huge Witcher fan. lol
I'm beginnning to wonder if The Witcher is more than just a game for some people...
Thing is, The Witcher is from Poland, and most Polish people are especially proud of it.
Haha yea, I see that.
witcher utilises folklore found in his country and i dont see why he wouldnt be proud of it.. witcher is also a big success in literary world as well as gaming industry...and not to mention the guy is a HEMA instructor and a swordsmith...and a good one as far as i see it... utilising things like witcher game that is wildly popular offers great conversational tool to help bring swordfighting little closer to a wider audience who might not be interested in it right off the bat...
I don't have nay instructors near me. Do you have any dvds? Amazing technique by the way.
Ive been doing hema for only five years Now, that Video wouldve helped me at the beginning
Not to be dramatic but you have the greatest voice in the history of Planet Earth
This was so so good, and makes me so excited to buy my first longsword. I promise I won't be a twat :D Are there other types of exercise that pair well with the long sword e.g. types of body strength or flexibility training that you'd recommend to get people in shape?
what company did you go with?
this man is a legend
I take it the blade is sharp throughout its whole length so what kind of gloves do you wear in order to grab the blade?
excellent!!!
sir, what is a length of your sword?
Hard to start longsword pratice in Brazil's middle of nowhere...
H E just acknowledge all one needs is devotion, to practice knowledge all one needs is there creativity and their own body. you obviously have access to CZcams, so pick up a big stick, and start watching Hema videos about longsword
The only HEMA school near me has an ordinary instructor. So I practice on my own.... Repetition is the mother of all skill.
This video just made me a subscriber. Now please excuse me while I go take some selfies with my sword.
Wouldnt hands wide also be good for brute force strikes through the gained/additional power from pivoting the blade during strikes?
Thanks my I copy this Video for further study ? Do you recommend any books or manual ..I enjoy your videos ..So keep up the Good work
I want to get 2 longswords that are durable for sparring but I can't find any for under $500 each. Any recommendation?
Cool!
Should sword length follow wielders height?
Where can I get the sword that you're wielding in the video and is it custom made?
It's been made by myself, actually. Perfectly custom.
I charge about 700 USD for a sword like this, 4 months processing time. Interested? :)
Made by your self... Dude that awesome!!!
I know that anyone would have probably already ask you this, but what do you think about nihonto and kenjutsu?
thank You!!
Nice video, but I have a few questions. Should I polish swords to mirror finish? I do mirror finish on my dagger since, well, it's customary to carry one and it's expected to be nice and clean, but I don't know should I do it with swords too since they see much more use than daggers. You mentioned olive oil as "preservant". I heard that olive oil is slightly acidic and may cause slightly gray-ish patina on steel (that's why I use edible bio linseed oil). Since I live in "olive oil region", should I use it instead of linseed oil? And last question is, what is that inscription on your sword? Thank you in advance :D
Is there a new link you can recommend for affordable mass made swords?
Can you make a video about performing cuts? This one is very good.
I like your style... subscribed. br. from finland (rookie fan of liechtenauer)
Thanks for the video.
Amazing vid
Hi !
First of all, i need to say that i really like your videos ! So thanks for subscribing those !
I now have a request (pretty please !), i'm training with two butterfly knife (Baart Cham Dao in chinese) and i would like if you could do some videos about dual wielding swords techniques and trainings sequences ?
In any case, i'll continue to watch your uploads ! cheers from France !
oh at last...
need more like this!!
still confused about the blank thing at the end tho..
Ah damn, something went wrong in the rendering settings. :(
so funny, weird and entertaining!! Subscribed
Where's the problem in holding the sword as Geralt does? :D
It's been overused by cringey people. :(
But is it actually functional, or just a "cool looking" stance for the game?
A proper fenestra, ochs or even a croce are not only functional, but look pretty good too.
Hi, you seem very skillful. I have to choice between HEMA and HMB. Which is better?
Where do you pull those places out of? Do you just drive an hour or two and go "yeah that'll do"? Where do you live that you can find so many places like that?
Also, it would be awesome if you showed some forging here
Actually, all these locations are within half an hour's walk of my girlfriend's home. But I want to diversify now, go shoot at some authenthic castle ruins. :)
I didn't give forging videos much thought - there's a bazillion channels already doing that. :)
i was actually thinking the same thing, that would be cool to do something like demolition ranch does have a second channel with all your blacksmith stuff, id watch.
do you know if Fabri Armorum makes good swords? their price is pretty cheap
Just have to say that I checked out your website and the stuff you guys make is fucking beautiful
loving the witcher sound effects
Hey Alan!
Nice video, but it does leave me with a question; why do you recommend against the hangetort or ochs guard (it seemed like those were the ones you were using)?
I find it quite effective defensively, as it has the point towards your opponent, while allowing you to parry and counterattack easily. Or did you exclusively mean for posing?
I recommend against them WHILE POSING FOR PHOTOS XD
They are perfectly functional otherwise. I just included the section about posing to possibly reduce the amount of ABSOLUTELY CRINGEWORTHY sword photos in the web, so that the HEMA community is perceived less as freaks and more like sportsmen. :)
Figured that's what you meant, just checking! Thanks for the swift reply, consider me subscribed :)
I recently bought my first sword, because I'm taking up blacksmithing. I got a katana, because training in that style is more readily available nearby.
However, I am equally interested in sabre, longsword, rapier and jian.
Love the vids.
where do u get your swords, like the one u use in the vid, or r they all crafted by u?
Diamondback17 I make them, yes.
I like this guy.
I'm hooked, dude. Were you in some longsword fighting camp in those clips in the end? How can I go to live there? Lol. But also, srsly, how can I? I'll build armor for work so i can live and practice longsword all day.
Hey, Allan, Id wanna ask how much does ur sword weigh? Not sure ull answer, but e was worth a try😅
smile and stab, that sound very resonable. the element of surprise will likely give you the advantage in any kind of combat hahaha. love your videos btw, i discover it from the witcher 3 game
There's some nice reassures here for getting a nice steel sword, but where can I find and affordable training implement just to get started. Like a wooden waster or something.
blackfencer.com :)
Oh yes, I've heard of these before. Thanks :)
Can you do a video about saber fancing? Im in an polish reenactemnt group myself (cossacks) and im just coriuous what can you do or what do you know about that weapon. :)
I'm not much of a saber fencer, but I could do a video of +sieniawskifencing teaching me. :)
Awesome! That would be great to watch! And also check my group called Pułk Czarnieckiego. Love your videos.
Wiwat!
I like your style. Where do you train and fight? HEMA, HMB, anything? Your experiense will be interesting to apply to different situations.
I started with HMB, then studied sport fencing and kenjutsu, and then started doing HEMA. And I feel I'm not going back to the other disciplines. :)
So cool! Other strange question -- do you go to reenactment festivals or consider going there? In historical gear, I mean
Do you have any advices for the people that want to buy an optimal sword for the different body size?
+Hyperion Black There's no such thing. If you prefer a longer sword, buy a longer sword. Whatever feels the most comfortable.
I feel that the perfect sword for me is 127 cm total length, for my 180 cm of height. But a person of the same height might prefer longer or shorter blades.
Great vid man!
However, could you stand with the sun being in front or to the side of you?
It is hard to see a lot when the sun shines directly into the camera
Hope your other vids fixed that!
Great content.
