- More than half the midsize SUVs tested earn good ratings in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s new side-impact evaluation.
Ten out of 18 midsize SUVs earn good ratings: the Ford Explorer, Infiniti QX60, Lincoln Aviator, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Highlander, Volkswagen Atlas, Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport and Volkswagen ID.4, the only electric vehicle in the group.
Two more, the Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse, earn acceptable ratings. Six others are rated marginal: the Honda Passport, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Jeep Wrangler 4-door, Kia Telluride and Nissan Murano.

can we all appreciate that the Mazda is the oldest one and withstood this test like a champ?!?!
Amazing how the CX9 still maintains such great safety ratings with a 6 yrs old design. Testimony of a great design.
So old
Over the full change cycle :(
@Fraser Mazdas are gorgeous
@Fraser exactly. E.g. if you see the front of a Mazda 2(no more than 15.000€ city car) it is like you see a really nice luxury sports car.
An I also really like that in the interior the do not have big TVs for the infotainment to distract you like other brands do.
Great recycled design
Marginal safety rating for the Wrangler is very generous. The back passenger is not waking away from that wreck. I would call foul play if I were the other car manufactures that received a marginal rating.
So all their sensor and force measurements don't mean anything? It looks like Murano had way more intrusion in the cabin and that's why it got a marginal rating, as the guy explained at the end.
Wrong!
Only in some cases, you’re right. Even though the head injury measures were low, but the head protection is inadequate.
Probably because the door bent outwards and prevented a catastrophic injury to the head.
good job Mazda
韓国でもMAZDA欲しいぞー
Jeep needs to put the rear side airbags in the Wrangler. If Ford can do it for the Bronco, surely they can do it for the Wrangler...
Wrangler Vs Bronco. Let the fight begin!
I Wholeheartedly agree!!!! This is one of my concerns about getting a wrangler. I’ve been driving Jeep for years and the wrangler is my favourite, but I drive in the city and highway a lot. Outside the city I wouldn’t be as concerned, but city drivers are the worst.
A lady with a a camry hit my 2021 mazda 3 awd and she went flying. Tough vehicles indeed.
We're just not gonna talk about how the back seat passenger in the Jeep Wrangler just doesn't get an AirBag. And that's OKAY??
Wrangler is a offroad car.. it doesn't supposed to drive in a road and get into accident
@@lior4334 what?!
@@lior4334😂😂😂
Not OK at all and it needs to be addressed. It is a daily driver for many people. Not everyone is rich enough to have an 80-100K for a side/fun vehicle. These are the 2 reasons I don’t have one. City driving is more likely to have accidents and the wrangler needs to up its safety game.
@@lior4334 Ford Bronco is also an off-road car but it's got AirBags in the back seats.
Didn’t expect that intro
Informative video
Mazda FTW, the CX-9 is an old model but still the best.
How did the Jeep pass with marginal? rear seat passenger died.
No, the injury measures were all good. The marginal came from inadequate head protection.
Poor is no airbag at all.
because made in usa
@@randomcrashingfacility31 lad straight up broke away a plastic pillar
Damn, Jeep Wrangler passenger died
hell ya my boy had no chance they willy'd my boi
Only in some cases. In this case, no.
Very important video, really informative
The Jeep Wrangler rating seems a bit generours. I'll like to hold a moment of silent for the rear seat dummy. RIP
Cant wait for the midsize cars! (the next category of vechiles)
Volkswagen is really impressive 👍
I wish the NHSTA did tests on 10 or 20 year old cars today that has high safety ratings BUT from different areas of the country. What I mean, for example, take a 2003 F150 from a rust belt state and one from a state that have never seen road salt in it life.
Is there a site I can look up individual car crash results? I’m looking for Jeep specific!
I think this test method will have an advantage for heavy cars.
so Vehicle makers may be reluctant to reduce weight
I would give the Jeep a poor rating for the possibility of rear passenger skull fracture. 💀
Low risk of injury to head unless the Wrangler was hit by a larger vehicle in a different car area.
Even the passenger of that jeep lost a limb.
The Jeep structure actually held up well but definitely needs a rear air bag asap

1:56のマツダCX-9で例えるとは日本でCX-8のXDプロアクティブです。
Seing that the cx-9's platform is already pretty old but is still performed really well on this test is pretty amazing, going to buy the cx-8 in a few months now and im sure that its going to be pretty safe 😀
Seriously? Jeep Wrangler marginal? that dummy almost flew out....very poor to me.
I had 2005 Mazda 6 and got t-boned at the intersection after the other driver beat the red light..i came out with just scratch on my upper arms..
It is clear that the floor doesn't represent the actual road surface where is not as slippery so some vehicles might tip over due to tires friction and damage might be more sever
hey chrysler (fiat)...how about an airbag for the people in the back seat of the jeep?!, crazy!
I was looking forward to see Toyota Highlander😕
What's the weight of crasher???
What happens to the suv and cars
After test crashed them get crush or repair
Really want to see the testing on Volvo 😀. What could happen? The test moving machine broke into pieces? 😂
🤣🤣🤣
Got acceptable lmao
옵션이 없는건지 지프만 2열 에어백 안터지네.. 차체가 튼튼하긴한데 2열기준 제일 위험한건 지프인듯..
Mighty mazda
wranglers back seat is dangery
Where is the Toyota Highlander?
I have a question, what do you actually do with the cars after the test?
The cars are obviously too badly damaged to be repaired, and for liability reasons they wouldn’t want to do that anyway. That’s because if someone bought a repaired crash-tested car and then later got injured due to an accident with the car, they maybe could successfully sue IIHS, blaming them for the crash or injuries. So I’m sure the cars are sold to a scrap yard, which means maybe some parts of them are reused, but that’s it.
I’m sure it depends on which test is conducted. This side test is probably repaired and sold with a salvage title
I’m interested Cyber Truck crash test results!
Well, when the CyberTruck actually comes out...
Wonder what the Explorer missed on, it looked like it did well on SI.
mazda is always the answer
Not good news for all those overpriced Telleurides and Palisades.
POV: You just crashed your Palisade and realized you could've snitched an Expedition Platinum
They had poles stopping them from rolling over
Is anyone surprised Hyundai and Kia performed so poorly? People look at the cost to value with these both have when it comes to tech and performance but tend to overlook how much they value their lives.
just you wait til they improve their structure. remember these company are still rookie in the industry but their market is skyrocketing in less 10 years today.
Yet they excel at other safety ratings. As did other Japanese and American makers who got 'marginal' ratings in these new tests.
I don't think you understand how this works. As tests evolve, so do vehicles in response. This is explained in other videos.
@@mobius88 nope they just never get better, they're always creating new problems for themselves every year, their trend and sales are undeserved and earned by false advertising.
Please remember to wear a helmet or bring pillows with you if you ever find yourself riding the backseat of a Jeep Wrangler!
Nice Video Bro!!!
What tests do you have for people 6’ and taller? What is your dummy heights? I want to have a vehicle where i know being 6’ tall is not going to create the same scenario as when I was driving a Toyota Corolla, got T-boned and ended up with a brain hemorrhage. My head was higher than the airbag, so the hand grip hit my head and I was not protected by the airbag? Do you have any categories that list as vehicles safer for people above certain heights?
why is there an iron barrier to prevent the suv from overturning ?
That ID.4 is built like a tank, 4000 lb barrier barely moved it. Even if you don’t like EVs you have to admit that they are much safer. Compared to the other vehicles the passengers looked like a cloud hit them instead of a car.
@Steven g they have much more room for crumple zones from the lack of an engine, and they have a much lower center of gravity due to the batteries significantly reducing your chances of rollover. Look at tesla for example, they are the safest car manufacturer out there. Beating even the likes of Volvo. The Ford Mach E also preformed exceptionally well in its ratings as well. Did I mention Volvo? Their electric cars are some of the safest out there. Hell even the Nissan Leaf scored 5 stars on all its tests. It’s no coincidence, EV’s are simply safer in comparison. That Mazda is a well designed car, but I can’t wait to see an electric version.
@Steven g there are some unsafe EVs like the Nissan Leaf units from 2011 to 2016
EVs have an advantage in this crash. Weight and the location of weight.
Thought the Wrangler was going to flip over…again…I guess the backseat passenger will think twice about going to Starbucks with his sister in the event it gets t-boned.
I know these ratings aren't just about the head.. But the body and how deep the car penetrated or damaged the vehicle.. But the wrangler needs airbags at the back seats..
Would not want to be the rear passenger in that Jeep!
How much does it cost to build the perpetrator vehicle?!? Cause I'll take that one amongst the civilian vehicles!. Just saying.
Smack that crude Jeep. Yesterday's technology today.
It's so difficult for you to use metric units? gosh.
Vw caprichou 👏🏻👏🏻
How could a palisade get only a marginal!
Did anyone notice how much smoke for the airbags came from the Mazda it was a lot more the the other cars
It’s not smoke it’s powder from the ignited airbag.
Nice
Its about time people see how dangerous these cars can be, it would be worse if hit in the rear, some of these cars no way you would survive
That damn sled has better and more expensive tires than my car does
Why do you need to put all that wiring?
Good news none of the SUVs in the video received a poor rating
I can understand the wrangler being bad but all the rest shouldn't be bad pretty sad that some of these have bad crash ratings
구형 플랫폼이라도 측면은 좀 실망스럽긴해
Hyundais newest 3row SUV, the Palisade, only got a Marginal rating? 😬😬😬😬
POV on the Murano: You died because of it
Nissan Murano is Winner❤
with that industrial design jeep can be at least tougher but it is the opposite... never buy a jeep horrendous.
Contemplating whether some of the cars in this video are midsize...
As we add more 'safety' features to cars, we increase their weight. As the weight increases, we have to add more safety features. Notice that the barrier hitting the vehicles is over 4100 lbs. How about we look at reducing the weight and size of vehicles so we increase the safety and lower carbon emissions through fuel economy?
Americans are getting fatter every year. Reducing weight and size of vehicles will be very difficult when they are built to accommodate our above-average size.
@@chigasaki06 funny you say that because while I'm a big man (6'4, 240 lbs), just yesterday I must have witnessed 6 different instances of both men & women driving XL SUVs and their bodies were stuffed behind the steering wheel. My issue is always height, not girth, but I drive a full size plug in sedan only for the room. Safety requirements continue to increase which adds weight to the vehicle which increases the need for more safety. Airbags are not weightless (I am thankful for them) but sheer size and the ridiculous need for luxury items for entertainment and comfort are also just fattening vehicles beyond the sheer size of the average driver and passengers. We didn't have TVs, VCRs, etc growing up. We read, actually conversed and didn't know what a cupholder was, let alone have vehicles with 10 or more of them.
Great idea in theory, but little to no chance of happening, as it's the style of vehicle that many people choose that dictates the size and weight, more so than the options fitted. So the solution would be to change people's tastes from pick up trucks and large SUVs. Reducing obesity in the population would have multiple benefits including health and medical costs, not just the size of vehicle needed to accommodate their girth.
One thing not often discussed in the crash test ratings is that in a two vehicle crash, with vehicles of equal safety ratings, the occupants of the larger heavier vehicle will generally fair better than those in the smaller lighter vehicle. They have more crush space to start with and the larger vehicle will use the crush space of the smaller vehicle to dissipate some of it's momentum/energy. Another factor is as electric vehicles are rolled out (including PHEVs) weight most likely will increase, at least in the short term, due to the energy density of batteries (and thus the weight).

Backseat of Jeep needs airbag
The type of fatal car-vehicle collisions varies by country (traffic environment), but in Japan, the most common type is head-on collision (33.0%, 2021), encounter collisions (12.4%), collisions at right and left turns (6.1%), and rear-end collisions (4.7%) (excluding accidents between vehicles and pedestrians). Among these, collisions from 90° to the side occur in only a small percentage of "encounter collisions," where one vehicle is passing through an intersection while the other collides with the center of the side of the passing vehicle. From this, it can be concluded that 90° side impact to the driver's side is a rare mode of fatal automobile accidents in Japan.
Mazda is the best
The id.4 is not midsize, also a lot of these vehicles are crossovers, not SUVs for example, the explorer is a crossover, not an Suv
This test is outdated!
The test vehicle should be a bigger one because for:
Sedans: The barrier hits above the floor and right to the doors and side panels.
SUVs: The Barrier hits the doors with the floor first which absorb the energy generated by the crash.
What no toyota or subaru to embarrass the competition
😂
Or Honda
Only 2 SUV's in these video the rest are crossovers
Hey these are typical midsize ones the Palisade and the poor Telluride are stretched midsize SUVs

They should also do crash tests for the rear passenger if they’re not wearing a seatbelt. I’ve seen almost every people (including me most of the time lol) who doesn’t wear the seatbelt in the rear.
And I also come from a country where 99% passengers sitting in the rear do not wear any seatbelts so this might be an interesting test in the future.
Or, you know, you could just wear your seat belt? 🤔
What Sergey said.
Garbage test, driver dummy not sitting high enough and why is there a anti roll over brace on the passenger side?
뒷사람 뇌진탕 100%네

They should have tested 4runner it would have scored poor.
They will test it eventually!
Shouldn’t be surprising considering it is a 10+ old design.
