I got T-boned in my moms RAV4 on my way to pick her up from the airport. The driver was going 50 but it was a Prius so all the damage was fairly low. This is very accurate though. He was going so fast my car spun to the side and his continued straight and hit hit another car head on. No major injuries but still very terrifying. It made me happy I was driving an SUV because the impact would’ve been a lot worse if I was in my own car which ironically, is also a Prius.
I hope this sells more mazdas.. mazda didnt wait for this test to make their cars safer, they did it o n their own.
They did it after previous years got lower ratings. This test wasn't created recently. its just being updated for modern size suvs. Still pretty good that they didnt wait for publicity to hit them poorly before doing something
Yeah not how it works... This test is constantly improved. So (some) automakers improve incrementally.
I own a Mazda. Great company
This single video actually put the CX-5 on my list. I've never actually looked at Mazda before this video. After test-driving a lot of vehicles, I went with a Volvo XC40 electric. I had some issues with it, so I told the dealer they can have it back. I forgot about Mazda again until I randomly saw a bright red CX-5 at some random car seller. My wife liked the color (can't blame her, it is a nice color) and I remembered the high safety and reliability ratings, including this video.
I test-drove the CX-5 and was completely surprised by it. Physical buttons for climate control, every button feels premium, it has great handling, and feels fast enough (even though I currently drive a 400hp EV). I actually had fun driving the CX-5 and loved almost everything about it. It felt like a "sensible premium" car. Good materials, no cheap plastics, but not expensive.
It is currently at the top of my list to buy, and i'm at this moment looking to buy a model that exactly matches my wishes (basically, I want all options, bright red, leather, wooden accents, 4WD)
Edit: I got one! A 2.5 non-turbo ~200hp petrol AWD with all options except 360 camera

I'm a subaru fan and was surprised to see the Forester only get A for the side test (instead of G). Even more interesting, when looking up the test results on the IIHS website, the forester use to get G, but the updated test now shows A. I wonder what changed? Also, we are shopping for the Subaru Ascent later this year and they are one of the few vehicles to get G ratings on every single IIHS test.
Subsru had Subaru Global Safety Platform like Ancap etc.
What changed is the testing methodology. They made the test stricter, and as such it's harder to get a G rating. Vehicles that used to get G would now get A most likely.
When I bought the first Mazda6 in 2003, I remember it having best in class crash ratings and that was 20 yrs ago. I'm really looking forward to seeing what they bring out with the new turbo inline 6 engine and a redesigned rear drive sedan (new Mazda6) and SUV (CX-9 size vehicle)

I didnt even realize that the Mazda's glass didn't completely shatter! Wow! So reassuring since I want a CX-9 as my next vehicle. They didn't wait for the test to come out first. Instead they built thier vehicle to even exceed the previous standards. Good job!
Why did both jeeps have stabilisation to prevent it from flipping?
Surely, if they were going to flip, that would be part of the result? 🤔
The test primarily is to see cabin intrusion, and how structural components and safety equipment (airbags etc) protect the passengers from side impact, specifically. They would be introducing variables to the test if the vehicle flips. And besides IIHS already saw Jeeps flip on testing :D
If own one put a heavy duty stabilize bar,,they are too narrow
CX-5 sacrifices some visibility from its side to strengthen the B pillars. Hope other improve, and they all don't have to give up visibility.
Sacrificing safety in not getting into an accident in the first place, for better performance in an actual crash is incredibly stupid.
I've had a 2020 CX-5 for over 2 years and never experienced any visibility issues. And the BSM - blind spot monitoring - helps immensely.
I have a 2021 and don't have a visibility problem.
There is no visibility problem. It's generally beginner drivers and women that complain about lame stuff like this.
These teams of engineers who design and build these vehicles as well as the ones who do their best to break them in testing two others, and the work that they've done has saved countless lives over the past few decades.
Thank you very much for this perfect video ♡
Wifey been driving a cx 5 for 2 years now. Glad to know they did a good job on safety since she usually has our 2 kiddos in her car more than I do in mines.
Anyone else notice the rollover mitigation prongs on the Jeeps? Not a good sign in the real world. And have you seen the size/height of current American full sizers? They'll quite literally take cabin intrusion to a whole new level.
Yeah - can you imagine a Silverado T-boning say a Miata/MX-5? I would love to know why people choose to buy these monster trucks when they don't need to. If you're in construction etc then fine. But not for the school run!

Watching the side airbag deploy after impact, was a bit interesting. How many vehicles with the back passenger extended past the seat into the trunk area? (Most seemed to stop deployment right by the head rest.) Very few, but certainly looked like that helped with the back passenger. Watching the Toyota RAV not sure I would’ve wanted to have been the back passenger in that type of collision
Its still pretty safe. In the occasion where your head doesnt miss the airbag, at least.
I agree with your observation. The bag DOES need to be extended back at least another foot or so. I had a look at my Rav4 Prime - it should be relatively easy to retrofit an upgraded airbag.
Agree. CX-5's side airbags covered all the way till the end

A side collision is one of the reasons why I sold my Golf R then bought a ‘22 Highlander (Top Safety pick +). Driving a small hatchback w/ a baby in the states is too risky.
is it a top saftey pick using the old test or the new standard of testing with the heavier barrier to replicate the giant pickups out their. Cause theirs only a handfull of cars passing the new tests and most of them are tiny compact suvs suprsingly alot of the bigger suvs have issues with center of gravity

Hrv = Mazda 3, а тут сравнивают hrv и Мазда 5! А не CR-V
No it's not
I did not expect that 😂, I’m randomly owner cx-5 2019
Honda CR V maintained the position after the impact which means it had to absorb the impact by itself, while Mazda CX 5 turned its position which resulted the impact car to slide away and it means less impact to the car. This might be the result of an engineering for the side impact test.
Similar result happens at the front offset test. Some cars sacrifice 20 percent of engine bay and slide away to keep the impact low to the car while some others just try to resist to the impact. The outcome is totally different.
Hi,
I have just one question, why on the two Jeeps, Renagade and Compass, there is a metal structure which supports them on the ground and not all the other suv?

At 7:20 They are showing the interior of a Honda being crashed and not the actual interior of a Nissan Rogue Also I'm curious as to whether or not they set the parking brakes on some of these models before they're crashed and whether or not that has an influence on the Crash results
No parking brakes aren't applied or else the dent goes further
7:18 I also wondered why it showed the interior of the Honda instead of the interior of the Nissan rogue. That’s a little bit fishy.
there is to say about the HR-V, the test version has a slightly dated frame and I think they have not revised it over time. They threw themselves on a new frame, with a questionable aesthetic that of the third series. while CR-V has a greater bulk and gives the idea of being more reinforced. Amazes the renegade is small but.... I am not aware of all the cars some are only for the American market even if a test car looks like a rebranded Opel. Try Mazda cx-3... Suzuki s-cross or vitara?
The problem with all cars is that manufacturers think of two things: first, more profit, second, less weight of the car to avoid high fuel consumption. Each car cabin must use two types of iron with different thickness to protect the occupants at the time of the accident, but Unfortunately, to make the door frame and even the front and rear frame and frame, they use the same alloy and thickness that they use in making the body cover, for example, to use 2 mm iron sheet for the cover and 3 to 4 mm for the car body frame to In accidents, the number of occupants will be reduced or never reduced
It's steel, not iron, and the thickness of that steel is less of a factor than the engineering that goes into it. 1 vs 2 side intrusion beams, for example. High tensile steel vs mild steel. Single shell design vs multi-shell design. Most cars these days are monocoque designs and the passenger cabin is almost always built with heavier steel in a space frame shell design. The body panels are not part of it and are largely irrelevant to secondary protection values.

I recently bought a 2014 Mazda 5 mini wagon. The center post between the front and back side doors is very strong. Just like the Mazda CX5 In this video, the high rated car. Mine was made in Hiroshima Japan. In these videos it looks like the side air bags do a great job of protecting people from glass.
I hope the upcoming redesign H-RV performs better.
Me too
From the video they all look the same to me, in fact the Buick Encore that received ACCEPTABLE to me looked much worst than some that were scored lower, but I'm sure they must have some guidelines to determine each score.

I’ve always preferred older cars due to their simplicity and character, but one being 18 years old and the other 23, I don’t even want to think about how dead I am in one of these crashes. Planning to upgrade at least the daily driver.
Heck even my 2007 Volvo C30, which was considered very safe for its time and class of vehicle, would probably recieve a poor rating with side collisions under these tests. Side impacts were never its strong-suit, recieving either marginal or acceptable in the old tests. I do love my "old" C30, but in terms of safety it probably no longer cuts it with larger heavier vehicles on the road.
edit: it recieved "good" side impact rating in the old test. However deformation is much worse there than even a lot of the new cars with the new test so RIP I guess I'll die then.

Well on the upside, this is a newly tough test, and all things considered all of these vehicles, and their side airbags, mean that they do soooooo much better than if you applied the same speed and situation of a 1995 SUV crashing into the side of a more-common Small 1990s Sedan at 37mph.
