    "Who’s ready for an almighty off-road showdown!
    We’ve got our hands on one of the most renowned off-roaders around, the Land Rover Defender, and it’s going head-to-head against… a Dacia Duster!
    Ok, just hear us out! Everyone knows that the Defender is a great car for off-roading. After all, the model we have here is powered by a 3-litre turbo Diesel engine with 300hp & 650Nm of torque. What’s more, it comes with loads of off-roading tech, including a central locking diff and air suspension!
    However, it’s pretty expensive, costing from £84,000. In comparison, the Dacia Duster costs just £22,500! Sure it’s down on power, with its 1.5-litre turbo diesel only producing 115hp & 260Nm, but is it a better value buy than the Defender?
    Well it’s time to find out! Stick with Mat over this series of 6 challenges to see whether the Duster is a better value purchase than the Defender!"

    My honest opinion is that relatively cheap cars like Duster, Panda, Jimny, etc are best off-road, because you wouldn't be afraid of your car as much when you drive expensive ones, so you would personally perform better.

    • @HarryFlashmanVC
      @HarryFlashmanVC Před 14 dny

      @gerrybailey447 hmmm... well it would be close. The very best off road vehicles are light ones.. look at the Lada Niva and the off road vehicles farmers use these days.
      The Defender has extremely sophisticated traction control which would compensate for its huge weight... to an extent but there's always a point at which the laws of physics kick in. Where I live, on a hill farm in Northumberland England, many of the farmers still have old Daihatsu 4tracks from the 1990s because they are super light, super tough and literally go anywhere, half the size of the Defender. Also the Duster is a huge seller round here. What you don't see much of is new Defenders.. they are extortionate and are seen as luxury cars for the rich, you only see them with fishing rods or when there's a pheasant shoot... both very expensive here.
      My money would be on the Duster IF it had an experienced off road driver. If both drivers were novices or they were both experienced I suspect the Defender would clinch it.
      For the record, we have a Mitsubishi Shogun (Montrero/Pajero) long wheel base, which is quite an old fashioned 4x4 with mud tyres on it, it pretty much goes anywhere but for the really tricky stuff it's a quadbike or a tractor at the end of the day.
      I wouldn't but either the Defender (too expensive, too complex for us to service easily) or the Duster (too small, this is our family car). But once the kids have left I would consider a Duster.
      Edit... just re read your question... Defender on road vs Duster on off road: Duster, every time.
      Last winter I was at a funeral in rural Somerset, very wet and muddy, the Church used a field as an overspill lots of London plated Range Rovers and new Defenders on road tyres. I ended up towing 5 of these out of the field with my Shogun on semi muds. They were completely stuck.
      Tyres are everything especially in mud

    • @alembic1105
      @alembic1105 Před 11 měsíci +6

      The truth is though that most cars would make it. All a car needs is decent ground clearance, and then once you start adding things like 4 wheel drive and good tyres it becomes even easier. The difference is though that when it's your own car, you want to look after it, you don't want to just make it whilst absolutely knackering the engine, transmission and all the suspension components. That's why you pay more for a vehicle like a Defender, because it can also make it (just like any economy car could've made all the same challenges), but it has the capacity to do a lot more, so it's not torturing the car, but rather using it as intended. If you treated your Duster like this every day, it would be a very sorry sight after around 1 year and would be worth nothing.

For a Pretender trying to claim to be the most off-road capable from the brand, that's a major issue. There should have been one final test, 10 rounds of the entire course. The reliably unreliable landrover would have broken down and only cost a few thousand to repair but the duster would have just done it without any mechanical or electronic trickery melt downs. I am a lifelong landy fan but tbf if that duster was just better looking inside and out, i would be tempted.

    I love the look of the Defender, and if money was no object, it would be my first choice. But the Duster is amazing value for money, and would suit all but the extreme off road enthusiasts, especially with off road tyres fitted. And an ideal school run car, as it is smaller on the road than a Defender.

    I honestly liked this video a lot.
    The mechanical tech difference betwen them is enormous, but still were rounding up the same results.
    Both cars wonderful.

    Maybe would have been better (and fair) to have both cars same tires. On such a terrains, the tires can make huge differences.

    Wow... soon you will get to be an experienced Duster driver and discover the ESP OFF function/button to avoid loosing engine power ;) - also now imagine an upgraded Duster :)

    Both great cars and and entertaining review, the Dacia Duster 4x4 has hill hold assist which may have helped with the up hill race..

    It would be nice to see the Defender vs Discovery vs Range Rover Sport in this course and see which is the best as they could all be used for off road & daily basis.

    I think I fell in love with the duster a little bit during this video! What a little beast for the price.

    The Duster did remarkably well, and almost certainly the more reliable vehicle.

    defender has so much technology should have done much better in the last challenge and Duster was impressive with this tires . offroad is about fun too so Duster sure wins

    My honest opinion is that Duster has performed well, though its smaller than Giant Defender with 3.0L.

    Im very much impressed by both vehicles!
    I find it extremely lovely that the Defender isn't just used as a Street-mouse, but as a off-road stallion, true to it's nature. Also impressed by Land Rovers work on the Vehicle despite being a Unibody!
    Now the Duster did perform extremely well in my Opinion. For such a fraction of the price of the Defender, you get no real luxuries, no 3rd row, no complex off-road tech. But you get something honest to itself. And a real contender in the Off-Road World!
