"How is it cursed"
umm, do you think apple intended their charger to be used like this?
The reason the extension cable doesn't work is that it has a ground, the old charger doesn't require one.
Still doesn't make sense, only the other direction would be problematic. (Because you wouldn't have a ground while the charger requires it)
Having a ground where none is required doesn't really change anything.
Yes, apple does this... every time
Yes
@@a-k-s4796but the real question is: why do they use IEC C7 when C5 is available? It’s the same thing but with an actual ground pin
That's literally exactly why they designed it that way. It's a standard for a reason
Of course it works it’s a standard 110-230V AC cable
Yeah, but apple treats it like a proprietary thing and charges up to 30$ for it

But it’s not. It’s the standard.
Both of those designs are standards. I’ve seen the flat sided one on many other products
One is polarized and the other is reversible
*feels like proprietary plug
It's still standard but added an apple mix
@patrickpankratz6077 right but theres still a bone to pick for using different designs on similar products from the same company. They purposefully made them different, so the consumer has to purchase more cables and generate more e-waste
That "8" connection is a Non-polarized C7 IEC cable connection. You can get them cheap anywhere. The reason they are not compatible is because the one that is missing a notch is polarized and must go in a certain way.
Here in germany we have non polarized sockets so even with a polarized plug on the device, I could still swap the polarity😂
@@legominimovieproductions There has to be one hot and one neutral unless using two-phase power, so I doubt that. The plugs that go into the socket may be non-polarized and thus reversible even in a polarized socket, but in order to allow polarized appliances to exist, the socket must support polarized.
@@specialopsdaveThe schuko socket used in Germany is symmetrical: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schuko

The extension has that block over the 8 for two reasons, polarization, and the locking "pin" is ground on the macbook charger. The usb/firewire ac adapters didnt have ground.
Polarity on AC? You must be an Apple fanboy.
@@daze8410 nope, just a general contractor.
I don’t think the polarization matters since if I remember correctly the actual plug itself on all iPhone and IMac chargers have the same sized pins that go in the wall. And most charger bricks have enough tech inside to differentiate polarization, voltages and amps received.
That makes no sense, they made it practically the same shape.
The peg is the same shape tho, so that don't matter
This was so simple yet you managed to hurt my brain
be cautious - figure 8 is non polarized while the other is polarized. Some devices don't care, some you'll blow it up. be careful
Chargers don't care
That means it has to be plugged in a certain way? You're referring to the extender cable with a different notch? Are you sure that cable is like that and how would I tell?
Since there is no switch or metal with live mains, it's ok.
What? Both are AC, the Electronics creating DC current is in the white Box, no way you'll Blow it up with an c7/c8 cable :)
The c7/c8 powerplug is an european standard btw :)
@@iamlegend535 It's not a European standard. It's an international standard by the IEC.(yes I know the IEC is based in Europe). By the way, we see IEC plugs super frequently in the US. Most printers use C7/C8, most laptops use C5/C6, and most computers use C13/C14. By most I mean pretty much all.

yes I haven't been able to record for a while due to my setup being taken apart since my family had new windows installed. It is on my list though!
Just cut out a groove....PS2 users will remember doing this.
You did risk running the PS2 on reverse polarity by doing that, so I'd be very careful doing that. When I did that, I made sure with a multimeter
@@specialopsdavewhat you mean? There is no polarity in AC
@@Matthew_Removeafterwashing One side (the hot side) both pushes AND pulls electrons because it's AC, while the other side (neutral) is connected to ground in the fusebox. If an electronic has its power switch on the neutral side instead of the hot side, the internal parts of the electronic may have AC potential that would shock you if you touched it while you are grounded. Also, capacitors in AC electronics would be filled in the wrong order.
I use to like the apple chargers cause of that, allowing me to use an "8" cable to give it an extension, especially short ones so the powerboard wasn't as crowded, but didn't know the macbook chargers had that notch removed for apparently no reason.
Only reason i can think of is amp rating of the power cable, and the macbook one required it to be thicker or something
That wouldn't be an issue on the A/C side, as your standard cheap wire thickness. (14awg/1.63mm) can handle up to 15 amps, even going a much thinner 18awg(1.024mm) that I don't see used for stuff like this anywhere, that still can carry 10 amps and even the mac book only uses 3.65amps. so it's more of a lets add on a useless tab so the old cables will not fit and you have to buy new ones from us. then any practical reason.
In which case it would be keyed the wrong way around. You can't plug the higher current Mac charger cable into the firewire charger, but you could plug the lower current firewire charger cable into the Mac charger. Firewire has much less current rating than a laptop charger.
No it's because Apple doesn't want you using just any cable. They want you to buy theirs
@@CrossRoadsOfTimeumm, 3.65a on 120v is over 400w, i think its 3.65 on the dc side?
they don’t, only the weird ipod one is like that
The difference between the two connectors is that 1 is polarized and the other isn't. Some devices require the hot and neutral to only go in a specific way. If revised, it could fry the charger.
It’s a safety design to prevent you from plugging an extension cable with ground to chargers without a ground pin (not all Apple chargers are grounded) and has a false impression of the charger is grounded. There’s always a stupid accident behind every seemingly weird decisions made.
Came here to say this. The other way you can see this is the round metal thing on the MacBook charger vs the plastic one on the FireWire one.
If there's always a reason why does Apple use proprietary USB c cords other then for you to buy therez

Apple users when they discover standardized cables exist:
Apple on its way to create propietary versions of IEC, USB and headphone jacks :
funny how you mentioned IEC when these ARE IEC IEC C7 and C8, they have nothing to do with Apple, Apple was *following* the standards at the time.
@@aeonjoeyNever said they're using propietary versions. I just find them way more than capable of doing that due to all of the propietary crap they have.
Why is Apple so complicated with everything they do 💀
I hate apple but apart from the proprietariness of it, I actually think it's a pretty cool design. It not only allows you to change the connector to fit different countries outlets, but allows you to choose whether you want to stick it directly to the outlet or use an extension if needed. Neat!
@@Iisakkiikthe little 8 is just a standard ac power connector, pcs, xboxes and literally everything has them.
@@prabhsaini1 I know, I'm not blind
@@Iisakkiik you literally said “proprietariness” , which by the way is not a word.
@@prabhsaini1 it's a word that I made up, deal with it. They just used a standard connector as a part of a proprietary design.
It will work, since the cable doesn't have any circuitry and is just carrying wall voltage to the circuit. So long as the connector is right, and the wire is thick enough to handle the load its pretty safe to do this
I use the Apple TV cord on my 2020 mac and it works great, same speed for charging which surprised me and it gives me 6 feet or something extra cord
If only all electronics told you what V/A they need, and all cables told you what they output?! We should normalize this 😂
Bro literally spent $60 on a cord when he could have spent $5 at a thrift shop
"will an electric cable work in place of another electric cable rated the same"
Powerful.
Of course it would work. You have ac current. Neutral and live. As long as both pins go into both sockets on the apple tv cord you have an continuous circuit.
Just don't touch any metal parts because it might be connected to one of the wires for EMI protection.
“This thing here plugged into that thing there”
Me: “slow down you’re getting too technical.”
One of them controls the polarity of the connector, the other does not. The inner connector is a standard IEC appliance connector, and you can get all sorts of cables that will plug into it.
I noticed this with my firewire charger as well, it seems its the only different one as all the chargers in this white box style after it are intercompatible with a single notch, and both styles will take the standardized figure-8 connector
the ipod chargers just seem to take only the standard figure-8
I got a few new condition extension cables for 2.50 each from a thrift store
you can do it with macbook chargers also!
It's 230V or 110V ac, worst case you lose grounding so it'll work but might electrocute you or switch the GFCI off if you're in a country that has sensible electric systems.
(Note that in that case, the macbook is grounded, so if you use a regular IEC C7 plug in the MacBook charger, you won't have ground, but the firewire charger isn't grounded so you can use a regular C7 cable with no issues.)
"Hey this sounds like a skyblock youtuber"
"Oh it was"
hehe thanks
Universally compatible Apple products are like atlantis, it's only a legend
This cable is not just an Apple thing. This is an industry standard figure 8 cable. I used to use an standard Apple USB brick with my PS2 power cable to charge my phone in the mid 2010's.
Plug in the FireWire thingy into the Apple TV, so you have it directly hanging off the wall
The prongs that plug into the wall are hot and neutral, and the one with the notch needs hot and neutral on specific contacts, whereas the "8" doesn’t matter what side is hot.
Also, it's why some prongs have the hot prong wider, and some are both same size.
Just some devices require the stream of electricity to flow in a specific direction and some devices don't
Any power cord from Sony will work, the figure 8 style plug is standard shape and a replacement will be found in any hall closet, cable box, thrift store, etc.
This is a known bugg. Once apple updates the firmware of the charger, it will display an unrecognized power cable on the connected device, and you will newer need to deal with longer cables agen.
That’s interesting that the FireWire brick has a different connector than the bigger usb bricks. I’ve been using a 10w iPad brick with a MacBook power lead for years to charge my phone
the keying of the plug is the opposite of what it should be. it disallows an earthed cable to be plugged into a charger that doesnt require earth, but a standard figure 8 can fit into the socket that requires an earth. looks like quite a design flaw to me...
and that charger does not require a ground, the normal prongs that would be used instead of the extension cable does not have a ground.
Yes, the one with 2 notches is a standard NEMA C7 jack. The one with only 1 notch is non-standard.
Can't push it under the rug forever...

That is the perfect representation of the apple ecosystem experience
If it’s just a cord, as long as it’s making a good connection in that configuration it will work, even if you cut down some of it to fit
Bro I remember grabbing my old PS2 slim power cable and plugging it into one of those to get an extra 6ft out of it. It’s a standard AC cable without a ground
I’ve used all kinds of power cords that have the same 8 shape plug you are talking about. Works perfect
i think apple invented "NOTCH" gates
electrical engineers are gonna be pissed
It’s actually a grounding issue. The one for the macbook is grounded and uses that big flat mounting pin for the ground. The firewire charger is ungrounded which is why the pin is made of white plastic. It’s done like this to prevent people from mistakenly believing that they’ve got grounding protection when they don’t.
It’s a bit of an odd omission since the 10/12W chargers have the B-shaped C8 socket instead of the 8-shaped one, and they do have metal posts for grounding. Any standard IEC C7 cable will work with any Apple charger, paywalling the grounded AC cable by using the B-shaped C8 socket is such a weird choice. I’m sure most Apple users don’t even know that the extension cable offers grounding.
Not only will apple tv cables work, but any IEC C7 cable which is what that connector is called. meaning you can use an adapter to convert from C13/C14 (Computer power cable with the 3 pins) to a C7. Dont you just love standards?
Allows someone with a background in electronics to explain. The cable is just passing though 120v ac power to the dc converter brick, and it's a different shape because apple is anti-competitive and proprietary af.
The "8" is a standard. Same as used on things like the Playstation 1 and 2. The "single sided" notched one isn't. Although, a standard 8 type plug would fit into a single notched receptacle.
Imagine thinking you need a special cable for a plug that's now more used than a 3.5 jack
Yea I had a 2010 MacBook Pro, used that extension cord to charge my 2018 MacBook Pro works like a charm.
Long story short it will because the two notches indicate that it is not polarity specific, the one notch only can go in one way and stops you from putting cable in backwards.
God, I've seen more apple specific sockets in this short than I have USB sockets on my PC
The MBP cable is grounded. The FireWire charger is not. That’s why there are two different ports. Which are standard and still used today..
It is necessary to comply with the safety standards. The Extension Cable should not fit because it has a protective earth conductor (the guide groove in the connector includes contacts and the guide bolt on the MacBook's power supply is made of metal), but the Firewire charger does not support grounding (guide bolt made of plastic).
Yup, this was a trick many of us who didn't want to spend $20 back in the day almost immediately figured out.
Across the pond that's called a "kettle lead" but over here it's a boombox or printer cord. Get an inkjet printer, an old boombox, a camcorder battery charger, or a $10 walmart stun gun and they all got that exact same cord on em.
Yes it works, I did this when I was a teenager to extend my charger, and also to charge my iPod that only used FireWire to 30 pin
“And I don’t know why they did this”
Money.
The answer is money.
Pro tip: don't buy junk from tech companies that refuse to use industry standard charging cables so they can sell their proprietary garbage for waaaay more than it's worth . . .
The locking pin is metal and there is a contact in the other side for the 3 wire connection on the wall they specifically use a different pattern so you dont connect it woth a non grounded cable
Just so you know, that figure 8 connector is standardized and you can get one many places not just an Apple tv
Those power connectors are called "Panasonic connectors." There are several varieties: the racetrack (just like those, but no notches); the "B", or single notch; the Figure-8, or two notches; and the "D," which has no notches but is flat on one end. Of these, the figure-8 plug is most useful, because it fits in all the other sockets as well as its own. Just use a sharp knife to cut the second notch, and you're good to go.
Polarized vs non polarized power plug.
The "figure 8" port means you can plug your cables in and darn way you like and the electronics inside the charger will make sure the magic pixies go where they need to no matter what. Non-polarized cables have 2 identical small "blades" that can be plugged into a wall outlet in either orientation.
The "B"b shaped power plug is for polarized cables, meaning that the "hot" wire from the outlet is meant to go only onto 1 specific pin in the charger and the other is for the "neutral" wire from the outlet.
Polarized cables will also have a large and a small "blade" that corresponds to the large and small slits on the wall outlet.
Non-polarized = any which way but loose.
Polarized = my way or the FRY way.
I have filed out notches in the oval cables to make figure of 8 cables in a pinch many times. For a second there I thought it was going to be that locking peg that i would have just cut off. Just be thankful for once apple used a standard mains cord interface instead of proprietary bs for once.
Apple user discovers standard cables
Yes, it's a standard IEC C7/C8 connection. The 8 is non polarized, the 8 is polarized, which doesn’t matter for a power adapter connected to AC power like the situation you have here
I love to see others doing this with the extender cables. I use the Mac extender with my old 10w iPad block so I can plug in anywhere and sit comfortably ten feet away
Fun fact: Firewire can wake up any fully dead iPod, providing the drive still functions. It can even fully turn one on with no battery or a fully cooked battery
I do this on my charger for my macbook to save on cables.
then, the extension cable is different because on the macbook the pin is metallic for ground, whereas the firewire is plastic as it's non-grounded.
Plug it in and have your merry way :D
Be careful when doing this check the charges to insure nothing horrendous happens
I would be careful when using the wrong cable, some cables are rated for different wattages, and putting too many watts through it could cause a fire. But this likely wouldn't cause a fire as it doesn't take a lot of power.
Of course it works it's a normal 240v ac power cord😂 lol
"These things are backwards compatible" shhhhhh, dont let Apple know that!
Its just standard AC, you could use a couple of forks and some electrical tape if you wanted to and it would work
Apples makes more money from accessories than computers.
check voltage and amperage... if you supply enough amperage at the right voltage then you can make anything work on anything...
Apple 30 pin- I just loved the sound of that… rather than lighting or usb-c or just another cord to make life harder, it’s just a classic 30 pin from when things were just built to work rather than make life harder and everything cost more… I miss post 2020 and so forth…
good old 'kettle flex' cables, as used to be a really common way for kettle manufacturers to make a global product. make one kettle than ship whichever cable the region needs to go with it
Who would think it wouldn’t work, common sense says that it’s just a plug going into an outlet, there are no electronic deviating bits between that 8 shaped socket and the plug on the wall.
I will never complain about tool batteries again.
It’s because Apple discovered a deep love for proprietary hardware
The two connectors are for one that needs to be grounded and one that doesn’t. There’s a B and a 8. The 8 can be flipped. The B Is more sensitive to hot and neutral being in the right place. It’s a standard.
Oh, come on, you definitely know why they made 2 versions on cable pin. It's Apple
The difference: one is polarized, while the other one isn't. Plugging the wrong cable in could cause damage.
you can plug a regular black cord the same one that for example your playstation uses
Those figure 8 ac connector is everywhere on the device that use internal mounted psu but doesn't require much power from the wall

the single notch cable has a third “earth” connection which connects to that metal nipple thing on the macbook brick. the intention is for you to NOT use a simple two prong cable with the mac charger per strict standards regarding earth connections. the double notched connector is for simple two prong connectors without the earth connection.
the FIreWire charger adapter is a universal standard (in Europe for mostly AV Stuff), the macbook extension cable does not have a universal standard Connector like apples USB ports with a extra notch, here is there one notch less.
