WOW That is an absolutely stunning model railroad. Growing up in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania I feel as if I am looking at the real thing. Your attention to detail, the backdrop, the way everything flows naturally and your clever use of scenery to hide is just amazing!!! Im hoping there are more vidoes.
thank you ! I am so glad you liked it. This region sure is the perfekt scene for lots and lots of the trains. There is a slide show too and eventually there will be an update with a new video too.
Great layout of one of my 3 most favorite Eastern United States railroads. If I were living in Northeastern Pennsylvania, I would model the Erie Lackawanna, Lehigh Valley where 7 members of my family worked for and the Delaware & Hudson and it would focus around the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area where I have seen freight trains of my 3 favorite Eastern U.S. railroads.
thanks ! yes these are also my favorite railroads. I have some pictures of me running The Lehigh valleys big alcos if you check out my slideshow. Nowadays i even, from time to time, run some conrail trains, from the early black and blue years. Had i the space i would also include some of the bethlehem area and allentown's big yard.
Amazing layout of my favorite RR! Beautiful job on the scenery: really captured the feel of eastern PA/NY and surrounding areas. I can tell you spent much time collecting rolling stock appropriate to the time and location. Great eye for detail, sir. Bravo!
thanks ! i am really glad you like my version of the Erie Lackawanna in the great state Of Pennsylvania. The books from Morning sun are super when it comes to get the trains right and the surroundings too. So this is my Time Machine and in N scale i think you get the feeling of the nature there with big mountains and railroad tracks crossing steams.
Your layout is one of the best I've seen posted on utube in a long time! Keep up the great work! You've influenced me to get out of the recliner and start working back on my layout. The books and magazines can be read any time! It's train time after this video for sure!
I grew up in Scranton. One of my Dad’s best friends was Robert Downing. He was a manager at Erie Lackawanna, and later Conrail. I’ve been in the Scranton Station before it was a hotel and have visited the new museum dozens of times at Steam Town. My dream is to model the yard there along Lackawanna Avenue where my family’s business, Matthews Brothers Wholesale Drug Store resided for over 150 years! The Starrucca Viaduct is one of my favorites. Strong rail heritage. I’d love to model under ground lines below the yard showing the mining below. Amazing history there. Gorgeous layout! Congrats.
Henrik, you really captured the feel of the PA rolling hills! Makes me nostalgic for my childhood. I grew up next to the EL tracks outside of Binghamton which is nearly on the border with PA. Brilliant modelling!
Super Nice Detailed Layout. It gave me the feel of the EL operating here years ago in central indiana! The trains also added to this by running the mixed consists I used to see too! Very Nice !! 👍
Steve from Buffalo here... first time viewer & n scale model maker. Awesome tour. so many more cool things then other layouts iv'e seen on YT looking forward to another video!
that was a great layout tour. I have been to Steamtown once already and I really like the looks of some of their loco's. you did an amazing job on the viaduct.
I really Like this RR, It doesn't look like your first build that's for sure! I wanted to share a great book for anyone who wants to build a model RR. If you have a basement one bedroom, or a single car garage or just an empty wall in an apartment you can start to build your "dream" RR. I am working on 2 separate RRs. The N scale one is from a book by Robert Schleicher called the best of model railroading magazines track plans. Using his advice I built an HO scale plan In N scale. Completely modular 16' x 5 ft 4 " On The mainlines It has almost 30 inch radius, It easily handles 50 or 60 car trains with a DPU. I built my HO RR Using his modular technique also, Winding around my basement with 3 ft aisles. The Idea is you can move the RR if you want. So you don't have to wait to start building. I started with one 4 x 2 module and tried to get my wife interested, no luck there. But I did build a pretty neat 24 x 30 ft RR in the basement. He explains In the book how to build master modules so you can turn and hide trains. My favorite master module is The Angelica Yard. I am working on a version of his plan for that. Using # 8 crossovers , trains cruise right through. Just remember if you want to model modern stuff(89') use big radius .I just want to recommend This book!!
Thanks ! glad you liked it. This is my 4th layout but the first in N scale. I got tired of the short trains in Ho scale, that i could run i my spare bedroom, so i decided to try the smaller n scale. And the trains i could run sure got longer. Double track and dogbone. I am going to try to find your book. Sounds very interesting and so does your layouts.
Beautiful version of starucca viaduct! My favorite bridge in n.e. pa. Thats what gave me the inspiration for my viaduct. Very impressive layout. Take care
What a beautiful layout! Well done! You have captured The US east coast perfectly with your excellent scenery work. Interesting choice of material for your fascia. Mike
Clearly good things take time and in this case I'm referring to how long it has taken for me to stumble onto this clip of your layout. Your layout has a great "feel" to it in regards to representing the time and location of what you are modelling. In particular you have really captured the "feel" of the country side the Erie Lackawanna RR ran through with your representation of the surrounding terrain and foliage - the train are great too of course. Thank you for sharing.
I want to build the line between Binghamton and Suffern, NY in Trainz on a merged DEM route I have. That was the ex-Erie line. Now, it's NYS&W, NS, NJT and Metro-North. Freight only west of Port Jervis, NY. Trainz is a simulator on computer made by N3V formerly Auran of Australia. There is a lot of North American content for it. They keep making newer versions every few years. Eventually I want the route to go to Hoboken, NJ.
Absolutely beautiful layout Henrik!! I'm a long time HO scale EL modeler, nothing against N scale lol , but I'm so impressed with your N scale efforts capturing the EL. I grew up along the EL main line in Orange County, NY during the late 60's & up until C rail (thumbs down to crappy rail). I have all those track side memories imprinted in my mind and finally carrying that into my new layout. Building a number of modules along the NY division from SF tower in Suffern, NY/ Hillburn yards (Mahwah Ford assembly plant) up to NJ interlocking tower. Following the Ramapo River & Valley that the main went thru some of the best scenery in NY State. Thanks for sharing!! Please up date when you can. - Alex
thanks ! glad you liked it. Well about ten years ago i switched from Ho to N scale in order to get more space and be able to run longer trains. The old Ho layout was built with some scenes from Hoboken and N J. I would love to build a new layout and include a very compressed Hoboken station and some rail ferry action. Maybe in the future. I wish you a happy easter ! Henrik
I too model Erie-Lackawanna in N scale in the US in NY state. I also have a compressed version of the Starucca Viaduct built out of multiple atlas kits. Mine is double tracked but shorter than the actual number of arches. Very nice work!
yes that is a good choice of railroad and states. I love the colors of the EL and the great nature in both of these states plus the interesting industry of the 1960s and 1970s. I settled for single track because it seemed so hard to kit bash the atlas kits into a double track bridge. But it still is a nice bridge to run trains over. Thanks for watching !
Very nice layout! I grew up outside Corning NY where the Lackawanna met with the Erie railroad - always liked the Lackawanna paint scheme. I'm surprised to see you running the F unit on a freight train - I remember them being used exclusively for passenger service, and the GP7 or such for freight. Poetic license, I suppose, but you've done a great job of depicting the PA-NY landscape.
Thanks for your nice letter. Using the Fs in freight was right for the EL, but the Lackawanna might have used them only for passenger trains. During the EL the passangerbussines dvindled and even E8s and PAs were common in freight. My source for my EL layout is mainly the fine books of Morning sun books. Thanks for watching !
Great Erie Lackawanna layout. Types of trains they hauled and scenery match perfectly. Lots of coal, steel and autoparts. Read in Wikipedia whereby in later years, when coal tonnage was down, they begain hauling more piggyback traffic. It is an interesting railroad.
Tommy Thomason Thanks ! I like the nice colorscheme. The scene is somewhere between late 60s and early 70s. So piggybacks will be running soon on my layout. Today i am also thinking of expanding the timeperiod into Conrail , that would give me the option to run a mix of preconrail roads as well.
@@HenrikSweden1 Sounds cool! Conrail and Chessie System...read that EL Brass were interested in maybe joining Chessie System, but after Hurricane Agnes destroyed the tracks, the Erie Lackawanna relented to joining Conrail.
Tommy Thomason there could have been a medger between the Milwaukee and the El, who had a pool of engines in their piggyback freights. At the time you could see Milwaukeepower on the Elsystem. ICC would never aprove a medger though...sad as This would have resulted in a nationwide trainsservice coast to coast.
@@HenrikSweden1 Fascinating idea I had heard someone mention before; a merger of Erie Lackawanna with Milwaukee Road. Milwaukee wanted to merge with Chicago and Northwestern since 1964, but C&NW did not like the terms of the merger, laid forth by an ICC judge and the deal collapsed. Meanwhile, too much competition and years of deferred maintenance caught up with Milwaukee Road, which dropped from nearly 11,000 miles of track to only 3,000 in its final years.
@@HenrikSweden1 You're quite welcome, and thank you for your kind words :). From the plans I've made, my own layout won't exactly be massive, either (probably 10 x 6 2/3"), but I think it will be manageable and fun to operate.
Thanks for sharing. I am very impressed by your scenery. Reminds me of Pennsylvania where I live. Is there a track plan posted somewhere? Other than the viaduct, are any of the scenes based on any actual locations?
maurice grimes Thanks ! No trackplan yet. Next video maybe. Thats right , only the viaduct is based on the real thing. The rest is built to give the general feeling of Pennsylvania. Maybe the next layout will contain parts from This great state. Thanks for watching !
Very nice!! What radius are you using for the curves? I’m packing up my HO trains and going N scale. My son has an around the room shelf layout in his room. I’m trying to get an idea of radiuses for Nscale. I’ve always been HO until now.
thanks ! glad you liked it. Radius is 14 inches or in cm 35. That's enough to run big engines like alco 628, in multiples of three, without having them look to silly. Now the reason i changed from HO scale to N scale was that i could run trains that looked like trains, without caboose chasing. But i still have my HO trains packed in boxes in my basement. Don't get rid of them. Someday you might go back to Ho scale and then you sure will be sorry you sold everything. Good luck with your new layout !
Perhaps if you renamed your video N SCALE - The Eric Lackawanna Layout - that you would get picked up more in peoples searches. Your layout is fabulous and needs to be appreciated by more people.
Nice video. Great detail in your layout. I wonder why nobody does the New Jersey section of the Lackawanna RR, given that's where the RR got it's name.
Thanks, glad you liked it. Well i was thinking about doing that before i started This layout. But liked the forestcovered mountains in Pennsylvania, so that became my first choise. Maybe next layout. I could imagine a backdrop with Manhattan in the early 70s, with the twin Towers still under construction and the shores of the jerseyside.
Wow very nice working on my own. Would you know if the EL interchanged with the D and H if so where? I’m sure they did I’ve seen many old video’s with both EL and D n H power
I’m working on my own EL layout. Trying to model Binghamton NY where it interchangeable with the D n H, getting the right information is a bit challenging. It was the Delaware division of the EL and the Susquehanna division of the D n H. But I did find out they did interchange at Binghamton and later years also Scranton PA. I grew up seeing the fall of all the great railroads. I was so young and did no realize the reason for all the mixed engines lashed up was the beginning of Conrail. I would see a NYC,EL, LV, DnH,JC, Reading, and Pennsy engines all pulling a long freight and thought that was the normal use. Little did I know it was all falling apart. Till I started really getting into the hobby and found out what really happened. I love the hobby I call mine railroads of the northeast being that I have all those road names. But I have one more to build and that will be my prototype railroad.
Sounds nice ! Love those old buildings near the el yard in Binghamton also would like to have the Allentown yard with LV diesels switching all those trains coming in from among others the Reading. I have today a time period from early 70 s to late 80 s. That way i also can run trains of Conrail and the mix of railroads you mentioned. Havent yet patched any freightcars. But would love to do that. Good luck with your layout !
That is right ! The bridge really should be doubletracked, but the Atlas kit was only onetracked, so This was the easiest way to build it. Although i think the bridge today only has one track. Thanks for watching !
thanks for watching. the track plan is a dogbone so it goes around the mountain , coming from the lower up around the mountain and over the same track, on the steel bridges.
Stunning layout. It looks bigger than it actually is (just my impression). I hope you find a way to extend the layout where you have dead ends. I tale this as an inspiration for my office layout that is more or less a modern era around the room ca. 1ft wide 2 mainline. The idea is to add some industries along the line.
thanks ! glad you liked it. Yes it isn't that big, just around the walls in a spare bedroom. But because i have chosen a very conform scenery, with mountains, rivers and a mainline finding its way through the valleys, it seems much larger. This is also the reason to why i swapped my ho layout for this in n scale. The dead ends will eventually be longer and somehow unified in a new line. I might even build a new layout , same theme, but with primarily mainlines. I love train fanning on my layout. Good luck with your layout !

@@HenrikSweden1 Thank You so much , I’m on the right track cause the research I’ve done has shown the same. Always nice to double check.
Riktigt imponerande! Det måste vara rikligt med timmar bakom det
Mmm helt klart ! Men så är det ju med hobbies . Kul att äntligen fixat en liten film.
I made a video of old trains here in the mountains above where I live in Brasil called 'Paranapiacaba'..this is so like it
Thanks for watching !
could you provide a track plan please..looks great btw
Thanks ! Will do that in the next video. Dont know when though...🤗
That track under the viaduct would be the D nH correct?
That is right ! The bridge really should be doubletracked, but the Atlas kit was only onetracked, so This was the easiest way to build it. Although i think the bridge today only has one track. Thanks for watching !
One question: where does the track go, that goes around the mountain by 6:06?
thanks for watching. the track plan is a dogbone so it goes around the mountain , coming from the lower up around the mountain and over the same track, on the steel bridges.
They make a movie film emulator for your phone if you wanted to make something like this again.
Very nicely done
Best wishes you and yours
Happy New Year

Thanks ! Glad you liked it and the same to you ! Be safe !
It's as good as N scale can get, but it looks fake because N scale looks fake. Proportions are wrong.
