Kirby and the Forgotten Land is the Game I've Wanted Since 2003

  • Growing up, I was a big fan of Kirby Air Ride. I know it’s not everybody’s cup of tea, but I personally think that City Trial is an absolutely genius multiplayer experience. I remember enjoying it so much that my siblings and I would just turn on free play and roam around the city off of vehicles, platforming our way through this neat little sandbox of a city. And I remember thinking to myself, “man… I want a whole Kirby game that’s like this!” Well, little did I know that HAL was experimenting with a 3D Kirby game that unfortunately never saw the light of day. Shigefumi Kawase would later mention in an Iwata Asks interview that the 3D game was scrapped because they “weren't able to achieve the quality they had hoped for and it never reached completion.” Thankfully, almost 20 years later, Kirby and the Forgotten Land fulfilled that wish. Kirby and the Forgotten Land is Kirby’s first 3D adventure, but it’s not just a Kirby game in 3D. There’s a lot of innovation, love, and care put into this game that makes it so much more than just “Kirby’s 3D now!” This game feels like the culmination of the series’ best ideas put into a new and fresh formula that just makes for a really fun game from start to finish.

I first thought “oh cool this could be a cool introduction to the franchise for me cause this looks so good”. I skipped Star Allies at first because of the mixed reception. So i played the game, got to the ending, had my mind blown, did the post game and had my mind blown again.
This is now might just be my favorite game of all time.
Also Fun Fact: The pop up ghosts in Invasion at the Haunted House of Horrors uses the boo sound effect from mario which always bugged me.
I also 100%’d this game atleast 4 times cause its so damn good.
And after this I played a whole bunch of kirby games, Triple Deluxe, Planet Robobot, Return to Dreamland DX, Super Star, and Star Allies

When I tried the demo, I knew it was gonna be good, but it was even better when I got my hands on it on release day. The leaves are so good, everything is so pleasant, and the bosses, hot damn the bosses. It's like the switch is treating me with amazing bosses, first Metroid dread when I got the switch a few months back, and now kirby? It still doesn't trump ssu, that game just makes me feel good, but this is a damn close second

I wish Adeleine and Ribbon were in Kirby Air Ride. That would be too cute.

It's a surprise to see you covering this game, but for sure a welcome one. It's about time Kirby had his 3D debut, and it succeeded with flying colors. It feels like a fresh start for the series with it cutting back on a lot of the fan service from past games and introducing a ton of original ideas that work so well in the 3D space. If anything, this feels like a counter to the modern games of today. Most AAA experiences these days focus on making the maps as big as possible to give the illusion of a lot of content, a few of which are great, most of them completely falling flat. They also tend to ripoff the consumer in cheap ways like with microtransactions. Even in Nintendo's case, a lot of their games, Kirby Star Allies included, sell you an unfinished package that they claim they'll complete later with their "free update" strategy that just makes the game more underwhelming than it should be. Kirby and the Forgotten Land avoids all of this. The levels aren't any bigger than they need to be and are still dense with tons of cool secrets and collectibles to find. It doesn't leave any stone left unturned as there were no free updates nor DLC promised. Heck, it didn't even have a day one patch like most games today. You can just pop it in and play a complete and polished game from start to finish, and that's how a game stands the test of time in my opinion. Of course, it's by no means flawless. I agree that the lack of copy abilities does damper things a bit, and by the end of the game, you'll find your 2-3 favorites and stick with them. That said, I really love Space Ranger since trapping someone in the energy blast does wicked insane damage, and it also makes me think of Buzz Lightyear, I won't lie. Heck, the Noble Ranger made me think of Woody, funny enough. I agree with your other points as well with the co-op not being that great and the frame rate suffering because of the hardware. The mini bosses tend to repeat themselves a lot, the environments aren't SUPER creative outside of Wondaria Remains, especially for being on a planet away from Popstar, and while the soundtrack is good, it doesn't live up to previous Kirby games for me. But if anything, HAL still nailed a solid foundation that they can easily improve upon in a sequel, and my excitement for the future of the franchise is higher than ever.

I just 100% it not too long ago. Also played it with my child and yeah Bandana Dee is just 2022 Tails which is rough. But its definitely one of my favorite games and I'd gladly complete it again. There are several moments from the midpoint onward that got audible gasps of joy from me (no spoilers). Even the side games were a lot of fun. To anyone that beats the final boss on Wild mode without copy abilities, I salute you! Lol

    Fantastic video!
My favorite aspect of Kirby and the Forgotten Land would be the levels themselves, as they remind me of a more expansive take on 3D World’s levels.

    Since 2003? Kirby should’ve had a 3D game on the N64
