- Lisa Gade reviews the late 2017 Dell XPS 13 (9360), refreshed with Intel 8th generation Kaby Lake-R quad core 15 watt Ultrabook CPUs. The XPS 13 is otherwise unchanged, but that performance improvement from the 8th gen CPU is the most significant in years. The laptop is available with an Infinity Edge (tiny bezels) FHD 1920 x 1080 matte display or a 3200 x 1800 QHD+ glossy Sharp IGZO touch screen. It has Intel UHD 620 graphics, is available with a fast PCIe NVMe SSD, up to 16GB DDR3LP RAM and Killer 1535 WiFi. The XPS 13 has a backlit keyboard, Precision trackpad and a fingerprint scanner.

I love how you comprehensively review minor upgrades to product lines! I am eagerly awaiting your review of the HP Spectre x360 13-inch (Late 2017)!
Thank you Lisa, you're the best!
I second this. Looking forward to 13" Spectre x360 review, especially on the heat issue, and the issue of touch screen lag after using the pen that people are talking about. Anyway, thank you in advance Lisa!
Anxiously awaiting Lisa's review of the 8th gen HP Spectre
Dan Robinson or the 8th gen lenovo yoga 720 13 :)
Having watched a ton of laptop reviews in the last couple of years I want to finally comment that your videos are the best content there is in that area. Every review is a joy to watch and you seem to be extremely knowledgeable, going in-depth even with the screen color information at times when it's relevant. Keep up the good work!
You are a sweetheart! :D
I don't think I would ever consider buying a notebook without consulting a Lisa Gade review first. So good and always full of information.
By far the best reviews on youtube
I still have my first gen Dell XPS 15 and I love it
Just discovered you! You are, hands-down, the best reviewer I have seen yet on CZcams. Kudos, ma'am!
Just wanted to say thanks for the reviews. Competent, professional and to the point. Also still happy with my first gen XPS13 of that series, which I got refurbished for 500 bucks two years ago :)
Very excited to see your surface book 2 review! Love your channel! Great video as always
Awesome, thank you so much for the review! Your reviews are always the best!
Omg I just searched this hoping to find lisa and she just released it.
Love your reviews! Can't wait for you to review the new spectre x360 then a comparison between that and the new xps 2 in 1.
1080p nontouch is plenty for me personally as it means better battery life as both high res and touch drop battery life
Solid review, I'll be excited to see your review on the Surface Book 2 :)
Thanks Lisa! Might get one of these.
This is my favorite computer model of all time! I actually love that the design is the same. I’m currently using a XPS 13 Skylake. It still performs like it is brand new. But it’s great to know my favorite design will still be available when I “upgrade”. :)
Dear Lisa, Thank yoh very much for your review. Now, I can decide to choose between Dell XPS 13 and HP Envy 13. Keep productive...
Hey ma'm i really love your rewiews, always full of details about the products. Thanks
I'm okay with the design staying the same since it's a really awesome look. I just wish that would offer different color options.
Happy Halloween back to you! Really love the shirt - cute.
I have had only Dell computers, which the last one of eleven years is still chugging away, albeit very slowly. Big difference between the business and consumer models as I am sure is true with other companies also.
Been a student of yours for several months and hope to be able to put it all together and actually replace my dinosaur Dell laptop. I have a feeling I will continue to enjoy listening even after that. You have made something that is like Greek to me, less painful. Thank you.
Dr. donna Walter as far as laptops go, same I've built a few desktops off of old high end optiplexes, I'm still running a latitude e5410(haven't turned on in a few months), but I'm buying an xps 15 soon
Oilslik - I had hoped to locate one I could use as a tablet/note taker and did not think this one did that. I am tired of filing copious amounts of paper, but realize would have to learn to make my non-paper filing system more usable but think in the end will save space and space costs money. Not comfortable with this cloud thing so for the time anyway, that option is out.
Does this machine do the 360 folding to a tablet? Thank you for your help.
I think the Dell XPS 13 2 in 1 flips to tablet mode but has less hp than this model...found it by accident.
Love my 9360 i5 8th gen
I have the 1080p touch screen model and the battery life is amazing 10h+
Are you going to review the Surface Book 2 fifteen inches, and its pressure sensitive pen with pen tilt? Are you also going to update the drivers on the 8th gen HP Spectre 360 fifteen inch, to see if pen tilt is there?
Another great review. I'm helping a friend pick a new laptop, so I look forward to your Yoga 920 review once it comes out.
Anyone want some Howie bread?
I have been using the 4k with 512 gb ssd, 16gb ram model. It’s a beast. I am a programmer. The screen and performance is tremendous
Always great review Lisa, keep it up!
you're my favorite laptop reviewer now
I was recently checking out the XPS13 at a MS store recently. I really like the footprint, and I hope they do a redesign soon. I felt like the metal edges around the hinge were a little sharp and unrefined. A think a little more attention to detail in the design would go a long way.
Always informative review from you! Why haven't you reviewed hp elitebook x360? How you missed it? Looking eagerly to get it reviewed by you soon!
This laptop is the best portable laptop and the design is just amazing, but If you want a more powerful device just go with the 15".
Super helpful review, thank you!
OMG, the inside looks messy. Is the new MacBook Pro 4 lanes T3 ports?
Love your reviews!
Love my Dell XPS 13. Run Linux on it and I might say very impressed. The build is great too.
tpasi2020UG does your XPS 13 have any coil whine? If so, is it noticable in quiet places?
Any plans to review the System 76 models coming next month? Awesome reviews btw!
Love this lady, best reviewer ....
I wish the surface pro would already have this CPUs.
Dell Inspiron 8th Gen review ? Thanks
I use my laptop frequently outside and am concerned about glare and screen brightness. Would you suggest the 1080P over the QHD for outdoor use? Love your reviews!
Great review as always. I like the external look and design of the laptop but I really don't like the look of carbon fibre on anything let alone the internal surface which I would be looking at a lot.
Great video,
What settings are you running League of Legends on?
Happy Halloween, Lisa! Love the shirt, love the review!
Lisa, great review as usual, very detailed and professional. Quick question, on Amazn they sell this laptop with a FHD Touchscreen, i assume that different sellers have different models, have you have the chance to see a version with FHD touchscreen, do you think it is mat finish?, a cheaper quality screen (therefore the lower price), the battery life is it more impacted by the 4k resolution or by the "touch" option? any info/advice you may have would be useful before i decide to order it online. Thx
Does that kind of cpu temperature reduce its longevity of the motherboard/cpu?
design is awesome i love it. i wish i had the new cpu
Great review as always.
As wonderful as this new Dell laptop is, I can never go back to a 16:9 aspect ratio display for productivity pc's.
Microsoft Surface devices offer 3:2 aspect ratio and I only hope other OEM's including Dell follow suit.
Legend, thanks Lisa!
Hello Lisa , really nice review. May i ask , how about running "heavy" programms on it , like SAP 2000 or Autocad or ETABS or other (civil) engineering programms ? Would it run them smoothly ? Thanks in advance .
wow tech reviews with your awesomeness
*Liked* (from my XPS 13 i7-8550U FHD)
i love dell laptop, design wise. even their gaming lineup looks sleek. i own an inspiron, and i don't feel ashamed bringing it anywhere while doing my work.... unlike ASUS ROG, MSI or acer predator. ugh. lmao
if i were to upgrade my laptop in the future, i'd pick dell precision or xps 15
Thanks for your review. I find Dell's speaker sounds louder than HP's. I have the Inspirons and it beats my HP Spectre 13" x360 speakers
I agree. The Spectre x360 has pretty weak speakers.
How would you compare this one with the Zenbook UX331UN? it also has 8th gen i7 with integrated MX150 graphics.
I'm torn between these two..! I don't think I will use the Thunderbolt out so much to use it as a reason to lean toward the xps 13. I would use it mainly for productivity and light occasional gaming..!
Can you please do the 8th Generation HP Spectre x360 please, especially regarding the gaming performance with external GPU's connected through Thunderbolt, most people will be split between this and the x360, but, me personally, I think the x360 is much better than this because of the added versatility of the hinge and also, the WIndows Ink support.
Please do a review of the x360.
Great video as always, always watch them till the last.
Awaiting 8th Gen Zenbook UX330UA review
Lisa can you explain a little on the TB3 2 lanes vs 4 lanes? Will it run all accessories?
Hey Lisa what AMD laptop is worth buying these days. What's the latest AMD that's out there?
Hey Lisa, are you guys reviewing the Yoga 920? It looks like it could almost beat out the Spectre.
I'm looking forward to that review too. I'm helping a friend pick out a laptop and that's at the top of my list.
Yes, Lenovo was supposed to get us a review 3 weeks ago, but it's been delayed. I'm hoping next week.
MobileTechReview Can you please do a smackdown of the Lenovo Yoga 920 vs Hp Spectre 8th gen
Display's quality of the Yoga 920 is very bad...
9:50 wow it hits 100 Celsius on the CPU that's really high. I'm more familiar with custom desktops 100c would be way to hot there. Are those kind of cpu temperatures normal in laptops?
Please do the review of new HP SPECTRE X360 (WITH 8TH GEN, 4K DISPLAY) or Asus zenbook flip s or lenovo yoga 920
Am I correct in thinking that currently we cannot get the 15 with the 8th gen? I'm looking to buy right now but the 13 is too small for me and if we can soon expect a revised 15 with the 8th gen I'd happily hold out a little longer
Thanks in advance for your response!
Run a benchmark that uses all 8 threads, then pull power and if the XPS13 already warm it throttles down the CPU to 850MHz, if you own the Core i7. So seems that Dell has some issues when running on battery with the power supply from battery.
And yes, there is coil whine ..
Hi Lisa! Thanks for this! Can you upgrade the ram on this model? I can see there is a slot but just wanna make sure.
Also, is there any way you can review the cheaper inspiron 13 7000 8th gen please?
No, you can't upgrade the RAM. Yes I have the Inspiron 13 7000 in house for review.
Please help me! I’m hearing anlot about the whine coil and I’m deciding to buy this or just settle with the ideapad 320s. Which is better?
I'm tossing up between Dell XPS 13 (9360) QHD touch and MS Surface Book 2 13.5 with 8GB RAM and 256 SSD. I don't really need the detachable screen on the surface book, but can get it for only a slightly higher price than the XPS. How do the 2 compare on quality / spec? Anything else to consider? Your reviews are awesome! :) Thanks.
I went with the xps 13 9360 qhd over the sb 2 only because my surfacepro 4 was trash and had so many issues. Now it is unusable the screen shakes so bad. It was either spend $1700 to get a basic sp2 with the extended warranty (knowing it was going to fail multiple times) or try something new. Microsoft is good about replacing if you buy the warranty but is it really worth it? I decided to try something new. the 9360 qhd was $1100 which made it an easy choice.
Which laptop should I buy to be fully ready for Windows Mixed Reality? I have a budget up to $4000.
Are you going to review the Inspiron 7577 with 1060 ?
When are the Alienware 15 getting it
In the review, you show a M.2 sata interface. However, Dell claims that the 8th gen model comes with PCI-E. Can you confirm which interface it has? Also, how do these run super hot with linux?
Leaving aside the screen size and weight, how is performance of this one compared to the XPS 15 now that has 4 cores? I mean in general use, software development and content creation.
any coil whine?
Love ur work.....plz review asus vivobook s15 2017
How bad is ghosting on the SCREEN?
Would base model this or Microsoft surface book 2 be better?
and how is the sleep performance when the lid is closed?
Thank you very much for all your reviews! they help me a lot! Can you please do a review about asus zenbook flip 14 ( the new one) vs asus zenbook 3 deluxe ux490ua and tell the differents between intel hd graphics 620 to Nvidia GeForce MX150?
got my xps 13 i5 7th gen 128gb 8gb for $800 pre tax.... definitely will buy another one soon for my fam
Sorry for the upcoming rant, but I really need to get this of my chest after having seen so many positive XPS reviews here. It doesn't mean that I doubt your objectivity. So don't get me wrong. I just hope people dig a bit deeper before they actually fork out their wallets, because these machines aren't cheap, and there may be some nasty experiences down the road.
As much as I am charmed by the design and performance of the XPS line, I will never ever buy another one again. For products in this price range, the failure rate is mind blowing. I've personally owned four over the past years. Four out of four failed comfortably closely after warranty ran out. Two out of those four never even left my desk, and weren't used for more than four hours a week. I take extreme care of my equipment. One of those laptops even arrived not working at all. Another one stopped working within two months. And both replacements for these died within just a few months of warranty running out.
A family members had the previous generation of the XPS 15, with the highest specs. He used it maybe 10 times in about 18 months. Never even took it anywhere. Just been sitting at his desk. It won't even turn on anymore. Having it repaired will cost as much as getting a more reliable new laptop. Way to go, Dell.
Dell puts together some nice hardware and makes it look nice, but the quality of the whole XPS line (even the AIO products, yeah I had one of those too) is pretty damn terrible. I even dare to say it is even worse than Dell customer support.
You say that Dell doesn't have much competition with the whole XPS line anymore. I disagree from the bottom of my heart. Anything with a button and a screen is probably better value for money. And sure, you can buy some extra warranty and coverage from Dell. But why would you have to? This is supposed to be a premium product, right?
In any case, do some SERIOUS digging about the product you want to buy. Do some SERIOUS digging about the customer support you can expect to get in case something does go wrong. But I guess that goes for all products.
adudenamedDave haha damn you've been unlucky .. i got the late 2015 model and luckily haven't had any issues besides a dead pixel on arrival which only took dell 3 months to fix but besides that it's been good ...
I have never owned Dell XPS machine but I can say that what you wrote is generally true for many reviewed models on CZcams. I have watched and read many positive reviews of Lenovo Ideapads (not on this channel ) and in those reviews the models were praised. However, I strongly disagree with such high marks because I have owned many Ideapads and what I can say is that they are not reliable. They break after 1 year or 1,5. Of course, the reviewers rarely have the chance to use the models they review for a longer period of time. I guess, they borrow the product for no more than a week or in a good case scenario for a month and test it and then return it to the store. No wonder that the reviews are so positive! What we need is more follow-up reviews.
4 out of 4 is unlucky???
hahah i have experienced exactly opposite of what u said. !! :D
atif4evr, that's amazing. You bought four broken laptops from Dell, and they ended up working for no apparent reason one day? That's remarkable. Give me some of your luck please! I'll be your new best friend!
are you sure with that fingerprint sensor in there?
can you please check that footage?
Did u experience coil whine
It's not an answer to your question, bu I have a brand new Dell 5379 with i7-8550u and it whines like hell .. In fact we bought two and the second one is silent..
@MobileTechReview Can you please confirm how it is if we compare it to apple macbook pro 2017 base model( core i5) but with upgradation of RAM to 16 GB ???. My primary purpose will be Programming and running associated tools .I am unable to compare these two models as one is 7th gen but with apple build./ mac os and other is 8th gen Windows..Please let me know which will be effecient and effective in your opinion ?? Thanks
I normally like a bigger screen 15.6 on the XPs version, but found a great price on the XPS 13 8th I7 gen. most of the time it will be docked to an external monitor and used for work. I could get the XPS 15 I3 7100 U for a little more. Is there a major difference between the two processors? I am trying to get your opinion on being able to keep the laptop longer, so that is why I am considering the 13.
Mark C I'm not good at this stuff but I think the XPS 15 Intel core processor is significantly slower since it is older and isn't as strong as the i5 or i7 (plus the 8th gen cores are like 40% faster than the 7th gen)
How about XPS 13 Developer Edition?
Hi, i like your reviewers. They are in depth.
A video series on affordable laptops for students and professionals who don't game would be nice. Most of us in India don't have much money to afford these laptops but still require good laptops for work. We are looking for laptops from $300-550 coz when these are sold in India the same laptops cost us around $400-900. I don't know why the markup is for and if it's the import cost then why not manufacture in India.
But the point being none of the reviewers make videos for us, only for those who game or have a lot of money to spare.
Why not make videos for the masses. A population of 1.3 billion in India and majority don't know which business laptop to buy for cheap. Most end up buying laptops with 1tb hdd 5400 rpm with i3 and those machines lag and hang so much. It would get you a lot of views and us a solution to our problem if you were to make videos series for us.
Again, aim for finding the best programming/heavy software running machine which can do all tasks thrown at it with ease but is under $550. No laptops with video card required because we want to work and not play on those. And majority in India don't require video cards for working in India. Please, we need a series on this.
Personally I'm interested in all laptops which are launching with 8th gen i5 with 8gb ram, 256 ssd and an hd ips screen, good battery life and most ports available.
Thanks
Great review! I currently have the late-2016 Spectre x360 i7 Kaby Lake but the frequent loud fan noise is just getting too much, bios updates don't seem to have fixed it. Does anyone think this Kaby Lake refresh on this XPS 13 would be both a better machine and with less fan noise? Dell seem to have some great upcoming Black Friday and refurb deals so now might be the time to switch. Any advice massively appreciated. :)
Could you please review the Lenovo ideapad 720S 13"?
What is the best 8th gen 13"&15" laptop in the market? Needs to have: light, 2x m.2 sockets for 2 OS's (windows&ubuntu), removable RAM&battery, 2xUSB, 1xUSB-C, SD-card slot.
Please review XPS 13 9370 with 4K infinity display
Could you kindly do a smackdown between XPS 13 9360 (2018) and Samsung 9 13.3 (2018)
Wish theyd do a new design i just cant get excited about it like the razer stealth....but i like the dell customer support better
Really don't know why the mid-end Dell Inspiron 13' 7373 has the fingerprint sensor in the power button, and the high-end XPS doesn't !!!!
Is this thing worth it for AutoCAD 2018 and Creo?
does it still have a coil whine?
Im debating between this exact model of Dell xps 13 or the BB black friday sale HP - Spectre x360 2-in-1 13.3" Touch-Screen Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 16GB Memory - 512GB Solid State Drive - HP finish in natural silver both are $999.99. Help me pick please.
Hey Lisa are you planning on making a review on the Asus Zenbook Pro UX550VE. I cannot seem to find any review on it but everywhere it says it is released
I doubt it, Asus doesn't have any review loaners for us.
Does it charge ovee usb c?
Probably getting this, the i7 is very reasonably priced (because its a refresh maybe?). Seems like the first really worthwile upgrade to my current ultrabook with an i5 4200u.
If you're talking about the version with the new 8th Gen i7 then yes it is. It's the same laptop as the one they released at CES in early January it just now has an 8th Gen Processor in it. They'll release a new version at CES early next January.
Still has the coil whine?
Too bad their QC killed my trust along with their bad after sale support. Those coil whine was pretty bad and I've exchanged it 3 times :( . It is a good design and light.
J Law I have the same issue with coil whine
Martin - hopefully Lisa can let us know if she is experiencing any coil whine with her unit ?
My second XPS13 is on the way - because Dell thinks that the Power Throttling on Battery is not normal. So I will have two XPS13 by mid November and then we will see.
By any chance are you planning to make a review of the Gigabyte Aero 14Kv7?
Gigabyte has just about no PR program to work with US reviewers and XoticPC.com so far hasn't been able to get us loaners. A shame, I'd love to cover their gaming laptops.
Thank you for the answer it would be great, I would love to see a smackdown between the Dell XPS 15 and the aero 15 or 14kv7, still your channel rocks, great reviews. One question how long did it take to arrive your mi notebook pro?
I wonder about the authenticity of claim concerning that carbon fiber palm rest.
