  • Lisa Gade reviews the late 2017 Dell XPS 13 (9360), refreshed with Intel 8th generation Kaby Lake-R quad core 15 watt Ultrabook CPUs. The XPS 13 is otherwise unchanged, but that performance improvement from the 8th gen CPU is the most significant in years. The laptop is available with an Infinity Edge (tiny bezels) FHD 1920 x 1080 matte display or a 3200 x 1800 QHD+ glossy Sharp IGZO touch screen. It has Intel UHD 620 graphics, is available with a fast PCIe NVMe SSD, up to 16GB DDR3LP RAM and Killer 1535 WiFi. The XPS 13 has a backlit keyboard, Precision trackpad and a fingerprint scanner.

Having watched a ton of laptop reviews in the last couple of years I want to finally comment that your videos are the best content there is in that area. Every review is a joy to watch and you seem to be extremely knowledgeable, going in-depth even with the screen color information at times when it's relevant. Keep up the good work!

I have had only Dell computers, which the last one of eleven years is still chugging away, albeit very slowly. Big difference between the business and consumer models as I am sure is true with other companies also.
Been a student of yours for several months and hope to be able to put it all together and actually replace my dinosaur Dell laptop. I have a feeling I will continue to enjoy listening even after that. You have made something that is like Greek to me, less painful. Thank you.

Oilslik - I had hoped to locate one I could use as a tablet/note taker and did not think this one did that. I am tired of filing copious amounts of paper, but realize would have to learn to make my non-paper filing system more usable but think in the end will save space and space costs money. Not comfortable with this cloud thing so for the time anyway, that option is out.

Quick question, on Amazn they sell this laptop with a FHD Touchscreen, i assume that different sellers have different models, have you have the chance to see a version with FHD touchscreen, do you think it is mat finish?, a cheaper quality screen (therefore the lower price), the battery life is it more impacted by the 4k resolution or by the "touch" option? any info/advice you may have would be useful before i decide to order it online. Thx

Can you please do the 8th Generation HP Spectre x360 please, especially regarding the gaming performance with external GPU's connected through Thunderbolt, most people will be split between this and the x360, but, me personally, I think the x360 is much better than this because of the added versatility of the hinge and also, the WIndows Ink support.

Run a benchmark that uses all 8 threads, then pull power and if the XPS13 already warm it throttles down the CPU to 850MHz, if you own the Core i7. So seems that Dell has some issues when running on battery with the power supply from battery.

I went with the xps 13 9360 qhd over the sb 2 only because my surfacepro 4 was trash and had so many issues. Now it is unusable the screen shakes so bad. It was either spend $1700 to get a basic sp2 with the extended warranty (knowing it was going to fail multiple times) or try something new. Microsoft is good about replacing if you buy the warranty but is it really worth it? I decided to try something new. the 9360 qhd was $1100 which made it an easy choice.

Sorry for the upcoming rant, but I really need to get this of my chest after having seen so many positive XPS reviews here. It doesn't mean that I doubt your objectivity. So don't get me wrong. I just hope people dig a bit deeper before they actually fork out their wallets, because these machines aren't cheap, and there may be some nasty experiences down the road.
As much as I am charmed by the design and performance of the XPS line, I will never ever buy another one again. For products in this price range, the failure rate is mind blowing. I've personally owned four over the past years. Four out of four failed comfortably closely after warranty ran out. Two out of those four never even left my desk, and weren't used for more than four hours a week. I take extreme care of my equipment. One of those laptops even arrived not working at all. Another one stopped working within two months. And both replacements for these died within just a few months of warranty running out.
A family members had the previous generation of the XPS 15, with the highest specs. He used it maybe 10 times in about 18 months. Never even took it anywhere. Just been sitting at his desk. It won't even turn on anymore. Having it repaired will cost as much as getting a more reliable new laptop. Way to go, Dell.
Dell puts together some nice hardware and makes it look nice, but the quality of the whole XPS line (even the AIO products, yeah I had one of those too) is pretty damn terrible. I even dare to say it is even worse than Dell customer support.
You say that Dell doesn't have much competition with the whole XPS line anymore. I disagree from the bottom of my heart. Anything with a button and a screen is probably better value for money. And sure, you can buy some extra warranty and coverage from Dell. But why would you have to? This is supposed to be a premium product, right?
In any case, do some SERIOUS digging about the product you want to buy. Do some SERIOUS digging about the customer support you can expect to get in case something does go wrong. But I guess that goes for all products.

I have never owned Dell XPS machine but I can say that what you wrote is generally true for many reviewed models on CZcams. I have watched and read many positive reviews of Lenovo Ideapads (not on this channel ) and in those reviews the models were praised. However, I strongly disagree with such high marks because I have owned many Ideapads and what I can say is that they are not reliable. They break after 1 year or 1,5. Of course, the reviewers rarely have the chance to use the models they review for a longer period of time. I guess, they borrow the product for no more than a week or in a good case scenario for a month and test it and then return it to the store. No wonder that the reviews are so positive! What we need is more follow-up reviews.

I normally like a bigger screen 15.6 on the XPs version, but found a great price on the XPS 13 8th I7 gen. most of the time it will be docked to an external monitor and used for work. I could get the XPS 15 I3 7100 U for a little more. Is there a major difference between the two processors? I am trying to get your opinion on being able to keep the laptop longer, so that is why I am considering the 13.

We are looking for laptops from $300-550 coz when these are sold in India the same laptops cost us around $400-900. I don't know why the markup is for and if it's the import cost then why not manufacture in India.
But the point being none of the reviewers make videos for us, only for those who game or have a lot of money to spare.
Why not make videos for the masses. A population of 1.3 billion in India and majority don't know which business laptop to buy for cheap. Most end up buying laptops with 1tb hdd 5400 rpm with i3 and those machines lag and hang so much. It would get you a lot of views and us a solution to our problem if you were to make videos series for us.
Again, aim for finding the best programming/heavy software running machine which can do all tasks thrown at it with ease but is under $550. No laptops with video card required because we want to work and not play on those. And majority in India don't require video cards for working in India. Please, we need a series on this.
Personally I'm interested in all laptops which are launching with 8th gen i5 with 8gb ram, 256 ssd and an hd ips screen, good battery life and most ports available.
    Thanks

Great review! I currently have the late-2016 Spectre x360 i7 Kaby Lake but the frequent loud fan noise is just getting too much, bios updates don't seem to have fixed it. Does anyone think this Kaby Lake refresh on this XPS 13 would be both a better machine and with less fan noise? Dell seem to have some great upcoming Black Friday and refurb deals so now might be the time to switch. Any advice massively appreciated. :)

What is the best 8th gen 13"&15" laptop in the market? Needs to have: light, 2x m.2 sockets for 2 OS's (windows&ubuntu), removable RAM&battery, 2xUSB, 1xUSB-C, SD-card slot.

Really don't know why the mid-end Dell Inspiron 13' 7373 has the fingerprint sensor in the power button, and the high-end XPS doesn't !!!!

Probably getting this, the i7 is very reasonably priced (because its a refresh maybe?). Seems like the first really worthwile upgrade to my current ultrabook with an i5 4200u.

If you're talking about the version with the new 8th Gen i7 then yes it is. It's the same laptop as the one they released at CES in early January it just now has an 8th Gen Processor in it. They'll release a new version at CES early next January.

Too bad their QC killed my trust along with their bad after sale support. Those coil whine was pretty bad and I've exchanged it 3 times :( . It is a good design and light.

My second XPS13 is on the way - because Dell thinks that the Power Throttling on Battery is not normal. So I will have two XPS13 by mid November and then we will see.

Gigabyte has just about no PR program to work with US reviewers and XoticPC.com so far hasn't been able to get us loaners. A shame, I'd love to cover their gaming laptops.
