2017 HP Spectre x360 15" Intel 8th Gen Review

  • Lisa Gade reviews the late 2017 edition of the HP Spectre x360 with a 15.6” 4K IPS display supporting N-Trig pen and touch, Intel 8th generation 15 watt U series CPUs and NVIDIA MX150 2GB GDDR5 dedicated graphics. The 15” x360 looks identical to last year’s model, and the two things that changed- CPU and GPU are very significant. The CPU is 40% faster thanks to Intel’s doubling cores to 4 in the 8th gen, and NVIDIA’s graphics are roughly 30% faster than last year’s 940MX.
The 2kg / 4.42 lb. laptop is clad in a striking two tone dark ash silver and copper metal casing and it has a backlit keyboard and large trackpad. It has two RAM slots and our model has 16GB DDR4 RAM, a 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD, Intel 8265AC WiFi with Bluetooth 4.2 and Thunderbolt 3.

Looks to me, from a commercial standpoint, HP picked the ideal timeslot, i.e. after the studentsbuyseason & prior to the endofyearbuyseason.
I nevertheless do concur with yout thoughts&feelings, however. :_[ hYlkeW
On the other hand, I don't care much for your taste of food: neither ''Pizza'' nor ''Bagel'', be they ''frozen'' a/o otherwise. :--] hYlkeW

I just have to say, thank you for doing what you do, in the way you do it. It's so nice to see someone that's really knowledgeable about tech that isn't some 19-year-old guy screaming at a camera, talking fast, and using all sorts of hyperbole. All I want are the facts, and that's what you've given. I was debating on getting a new device to replace my aging Surface Pro 3, and it seemed to be coming down to being between the Spectre x360 (13.3" and 15"), the Envy x360 15", the Yoga 720, and the new Surface Pro. Price was the key reason I eliminated the Surface Pro from my options, and I ultimately went with the 8th gen Spectre x360 15" that you featured here. I found your videos (this one and the comparison between it and the Surface Book 2) after I'd already made my decision, but seeing these videos helped me better understand the device and further solidified in my mind that I'd made the right choice. Keep being amazing!

I am looking for this as an editing/portable workstation/gaming laptop and was wondering if the GPU/CPU combo puts out a generous amount of gaming performance so I wouldn't have to go and buy an external GPU housing and GPU. Lisa mentions that the 15" Spectre doesn't have stylus tilt support but the 13" does. Any idea why this is so? Could the 15" have tilt-support with a software upgrade?
And if someone can post a link or two on where the feature of tilt-support is explained I would appreciate it. I tried doing a search on how tilt-support is performed (hardware, software, stylus, etc.) and most of the returns were posts about personal devices not working properly, rather than any explanations on how tilt-support is performed.
    Thanks.

    1) x360 Envy having 32gb RAM, 500 SSD, 1TB HDD is $1300-
    2) option 1 but adding 4K&mx150 it rises to $1800-,
    3) x360 Spectre having 16gb RAM, 500 SDD, no HDD, but 4K&mx150, thunderbolt 3 but no HDMI, and no usb type A, is about $1800.
What do you recomend? Im concerned about ram, disc, and colour accuracy, and $1800 is too much, but It seems that 4k display is better in colours than 1080p

I purchased the Wacom Bamboo Ink pen along with this laptop and found that the smart features of the pen are not supported by this laptop. The rocker button on the base of the pen is not supported at all. I have more pen support in my old Galaxy Note 10 than the Spectre 8th Gen. Hopefully HP will add support in the near future if that is even possible.

You're great info helped steer me to this new laptop.
Hoping you might be able to comment on why Photoshop CC Performance Preferences show the detected GPU as the Intel UHD Graphics 620... shouldn't it be using the MX150?
The Device Manager lists both the Intel 620 and NVIDIA MX150 under display adapters. Photoshop only appears to detect the Intel 620.

I was hoping you'd spend a little time discussing how you feel it works as a tablet, albeit a large one. And since you mentioned the heating base, could you recommend an ideal cooling pad for this machine? This info would be greatly helpful if you find the time. Thanks again.

I'm looking to buy a new laptop with a 8th gen i7 and I think I've settled on either then 13inch or 15inch spectre x360. i'm going to be using the computer for music production, and i was wondering if there really is a performance difference between a 13 inch spectre with 16 GB RAM and a 15 inch model with 16 GB RAM?
