My 5 or 6 year old Honda lawn mower backfiring

I do it whit newer ones it takes a while but it fils upp the exhaust then when it ignited it spites flames

I held mine all the way in (not revving) and the rpms were fluctuating way to much and it backfired (loud as hell) and fire came out, a good amount to, it's been sitting but I think it's the carb

I was cutting my grandads grass trying to get it to splutter with one of these honda 4.5 hp issy engines and it made a gunshot noise and 1/2 a metre of flames shot out. the noise was deafening. I will put it on youtube if it does it again XD

Surging, clean the fuel pickup screen in the carb and the brass nut that holds the fuel bowl on. Has two holes that can get plugged.
