- In this video I call on the local South Waikato District Council here in Tokoroa New Zealand to "put-up or shut-up". They have said I may not fly my drone in this park without having a pilot's license or being under the supervision of someone with MFNZ "wings". I called their bluff and flew with neither.
If the council takes no action for this agregious breach of their diktat then we have proof of bullying. If they do take action, I will rip them to shreds because I am flying in full compliance with their own published drone policy.
Do not give in to bullying -- call their bluff and watch them back down!

I pride myself on not just "talking the talk" but also "walking the walk". It would be unreasonable of me to incite others to take a very practical stand against such tyranny if I were not prepared to do so myself -- and I abhor hypocrisy.

It is very sad when a council conducts a personal vendetta against an old man that's done nothing but advocate that we should always fly safely and responsibly. Yes, Bruce may call out some of the stupid ill thought out rules we have to contend with, but at the end of the day he's always said we should always fly safely and responsibly, and do nothing that endangers others or their property. That only makes the whole thing more disgusting. These people not only have egos the size of a gas giant, they also have no heart.
I have watched and followed you for years, Bruce. If anyone is an expert on all things FPV, quad or wings; it is you. You have helped me and countless others learn to build and fly safely and responsibly. I just wanted to say thank you and I'm glad to see you out flying. I assume you have asked for a copy of the council laws/bylaws to show where it says you are doing something against the rules? If they can't prove it then they should just stut up. Well done Bruce for standing up for your rights.
That video is coming... it's a doozy! I have been accused of breaking a rule that hasn't even been published and which, when I visited the council to request a copy of this new rule, could not be found -- even by the council itself. I think people will clearly see what I mean when I accuse them of bullying and malfeasance when the watch that video.

I truly admire your great spirit in challenging the authorities. They are not doing a great job for obvious reasons. Nevertheless, I can't believe a public resource is spent on such a case, even if the cost involved the electricity for one sent email.

You are absolutely correct but, under our aviation regulations, someone who has a pilot's license (even a microlight one) can buy a 15Kg turbine-powered model and fly it at our local airport without training, experience or supervision - even if they've never flown *any* kind of RC model before. Because it's *safe*... isn't it? Yet, a veteran like myself with over 60 years experience, an intimate knowledge of the technology and the rules and who has a proven competency in flying is forbidden because I'm supposedly *unsafe*. Yep, that sounds like something only a bureaucrat would believe.

A real pilots license doesn't mean you can fly an rc vehicle. Flying real planes does not mean you know how to fly an rc plane. Totally different activities that require different training.
You are absolutely right.. but as far as CAA and our council are concerned... if you have a pilot's license you can just pick up a transmitter and fly a 200mph turbine-powered jet with safety and confidence even if you've never flown any RC models before. Yeah... that's the state of idiocy in respect to regulations around here.
Exactly, first off you potentially have differences such as POV, and reversed controls depending on POV, in the case of FPV this isn't much different, but the narrow field of view will be something very few full size pilots would have to deal with.
Secondly there's the massive difference in power to weight ratios, full size simply can't even begin to compare to that.
That first point is often demonstrated in the flight sim community, which has from time to time IRL fighter pilots joining in, and quite often they do very poorly in PVP vs sim-pilots simply due to not being used to operating with a limited field of view from a monitor.
The fact they say he needs a pilots licence just proves these people are utterly clueless about what they are trying to rule over.
So, my 10 year old nephew needs a pilot license. That little piece of realism will get this thrown out if it goes to court. You have ABSOLUTELY nothing to worry about. You should contact your local news networks to come and film this or at least tell them, "Want to see me bring down an entire council? Come film me in action." That way, it would be out in the public eye for all of NZ to see on the Telly when they watch the news. That would definitely show how twisted this council is. Keep up the good work!!

There is another aspect of bullying that needs to be mentioned. Usually, a bully will form a gang to protect him. Then if he gets called out, his gang members, who have been preconditioned to protect him, step in. Go to your flying field and see if this is not the case. I think that you will see what I mean.

Hire an attorney . When the letters from your attorney start arriving , they will begin to realize that you mean business . You already have grounds for a lawsuit . Have the guys you fly with to contribute to the legal fund because you`re fighting for their rights too . I`m speaking of these jerks who believe that they can just make up their own rules and regulations as they go along and not follow the laws as they stand at this time . I have an old friend from New Zealand and I know what he would say about this stinking counsel . He would say , It looks like they have really pissed in their pickles this time and this over reach of their authority is exactly the opening you`ve been waiting for . Drag them through court and sue the crap out of them . Show them no mercy . Let them really have it and they will never mess w/ you or your friends again .

That was terribly naughty of you Bruce, I feel as though several hundred of us should use the handy form on the Customer Services page of the SWDC website to report this civil disobedience and demand to know what Council is going to do about it and keep hounding them until they give an actual answer.

That is indeed part of the plan. If they do not take action then that letter from the council becomes clear evidence of bullying. I'll be posting other videos which clearly demonstrate the council's malfeasance in the days to come. All the evidence will be a matter of public record.

Thank you for your efforts. As the founder of the local club some 50 years ago, I was amazed at how little support I got from members to rid ourselves of a psychopath who felt that no rule applied to him.
A meeting called to address the problem had one attendee, a newcomer, hadn't even got his wings yet.
After putting WAY too much effort into this with virtually no support, I reached out to our national organization for.. some guidance.
The secretary of 30 years with zero flying experience told me that if I can't find my big boy pants and deal with life like an adult, I should go zoom my toys at the kids playground. She expressed how much she detested those of us in the hobby. This from the only paid individual, of 30 years.
Well, so much for where payment of my dues went.
She retired a year or so ago, with a nice big fat pension. It really fit her well.
I've been flying at some local, public parts for the last year or so. No muss, no hassles, we have a gaggle of guys n gals that meet regularly. No dues except everyone takes a turn at loading up at Tim Horton's with coffee and donuts, MMMM, DO-NUTS,

Good on ya mate! I grew up in Tokoroa and now live in Perth Western Australia and love flying my drone here. Like you for some reason the councils over here hate drones and drone owners. It seems every opportunity to take some beautiful footage is blocked with no drone signs everywhere. I took my drone to a dam about 30 km in the middle of no where and there where signs stopping me from flying my drone. I saw not one other person while I was there. Keep up the good fight 👍

My dad best friend and I went flying at our local park here in America, the media isn't doing a very good job at making the hobby the villain, everyone at the park stopped what they were doing and watched us fly. Nobody complained or reported us, some of the neighbors to the park came out of their houses to applaud our flying. I truly believe the FAA has no chance and the laws and rules they're trying to put in place won't be enforced for another 10+ years, kinda like the law of cyclists have to wear helmets, nobody ever does and nobody ever gets in trouble. We have a chance.

"Bullies always back down". Dangerous statement. This is a legal case, I hope you got that response from CAA in writing.
BUT
Bullies hunt in packs. The non legal-threat version of bullying has the bully's friends grab you so the bully can bash you safely. Telling a child at school to stand up to the bully is setting that child up to being hurt. You have to isolate the bully and then show an overpowering response to their threats for it to work. Otherwise getting a recording of the bashing happening ( no one will help you with this ) and taking that to legal representation may work but it is only after the fact AND may still be ignored by authorities.
So, no, bullies do not always back down.
Yes, the exchage with CAA was on X (formerly Twitter) for the entire world to see and I know this bully will back down, I've had to deal with their tactics for almost 20 years.

Auckland City Council, Auckland Transport....like most other councils and politicians in New Zealand have forgotten that they are 'elected' to look after the interest's of the Tax Payer/Rate Payer...Auckland Transport have a policy that states 'No one has the right to disallow access to any publicly funded roading' (other than emergency and/or repair)....an answer to local residents to stop large trucks using a residential street as a short cut to the motorway between the hours of 8pm and 6am...yet Auckland Transport has decided to take a 3rd of the publicly funded roading in Auckland for 8 hours each weekday for 5, for profit, private bus companies.....and have decided to give a 'service charge' of $150.00 if a ratepayer uses it during these restricted times.....they can't call it a 'crime' because it isn't and the police have no power to fine....it's known as a 'service charge' ...They have also spent millions of rate payer dollars on installing camera systems to catch ratepayers legally using their infrastructure.....New Zealand is supposed to be a democracy....not an Authoritarian State.....I would gather your council will be a bit 'slow' in forcing the issue into court...they probably don't have legal basis or standing.....
