What's weird is embracer has been in the industry a long time. They were Nordic games in 2011 and had full control of THQ way back in 2014 (they bscme THQ Nordic in 2016). They only became embracer in 2019 and those just over four years is when they went down the path of buying everything up and risky investments and I don't know why... They've been in the industry for a good bit of time (not the longest but it was at least 8 years since they were first Nordic games). And even without being in the industry any basic business class will teach you why not to grow too fast. Instead they flew too close to the sun and decided to pop a few massive blimps on the way down so they crash onto all of us.

I'm guessing that once the dust has settled, the industry will revert more to how it was a couple gens back, and had pretty much always been up to that point. When the majority of games fell into that middle budget, or 'AA' range. Rather than almost everything being either 'Indie' or 'AAA' as it is now.

Games that had tighter budgets and more focused gameplay were better overall because they weren't trying to have something for everyone and could make due with less people buying the games because they weren't as expensive and thus build a dedicated fanbase.

@@blickedxbit is insane you don't mention rogue like. Anyway there's a crap ton of indie games and even more AA. More than AAA. The only real thing holding indie back is that the industry as a whole still hasn't managed to stop being niche outside of mobile. The only titles that can breach the general populace are the longest running most well known which have trapped themselves trying to reach unattainable expectations each year. But now we're seeing console games start to trickle down natively to mobile (it's the dead cells and Hades and vampire survivors that are natively playable mobile). Meanwhile AAA games are struggling to reach that critical market and keep chasing those high built up standards from fans. So there's more focus on like cloud gaming but that adds yet another barrier to playing this games. I honestly think we'll see a very different future as time goes on.

I don't think we're going to have a crash. But I do think companies are going to start pulling back on large projects that have three plus million dollar budgets.
I also see less innovation within the industry, meaning fewer new IPs. Gamers love to say they want new stuff. But obviously, they don't. Somehow at the game awards, every single game (aside from a couple which didn't win) that was nominated was an existing IP or a sequel. So companies will double down on pumping out sequels for existing game franchises instead of expanding into newer stuff.

On X, I mentioned a few times in the past; that MSFT / Xbox should swoop in and acquire some studio's and IP's from the Embracer Group. I think, I specifically mentioned Crystal Dynamics as a example, and indeed Eidos. They have great IP's, Chrystal already have experience with working with Xbox if I'm not mistaken. So that could work out. It was surprising to me that 2K picked up the Borderlands studio. I don't mind that they did, so we are sure of more games that go multiplatform, but I did thought .. was Xbox sleeping ? The studio was 400 million, a buy for a company like MSFT / Xbox. Obviously I don't know if there where talks behind closed doors (or the FTC nagging was the reason, they take it easy), but Borderlands would have been a great addition to Xbox in my opinion, just like a Tomb Raider and other titles you (Alex) mentioned. Besides Embracer .. I think IO interactive would also fit Xbox. Same reason; great IP's (hitman, Kane & Lynch) and they are already working together (Perfect Dark Reboot). Although I don't know if Eidos holds some Hitman rights, but you could fix that by buying Eidos, and later take over IO Interactive as well.

First of all, the 1984 video crash was a pure local USA problem. We had none in Europe.
On the other hand you are right. We are standing short before a world wide video game crash this time. At least of the whole triple A industry complex, because these kind of games are now much too expensive to make. They have basically exact the same problems like the movie industry. The costs went out of control.
Bad story telling, boring mechanics and trying to enforce the message on us with the social engineering tries from Black Rock. They are now, because of all that, widely ignored by more and more Gamers, accelerating the high cost problem even further.
This explains also the success of games like Palworld and Helldiver 2. Gamers rather spend their money on these games, than any abomination like "Skull and Bones", "The Suicide Squad" or "Star Wars Outlaws."

And also let's not forget the DEI and the whole Black Rock money for "Changing behaviours" agenda. As a Kojima fan I want to ask you this ? What do you think about Death Stranding ? is it worth it ?

Microsoft needs to *stop* buying up every company and turning the industry into a monopoly. We've all seen how EA and Activision treated the smaller studios they bought, they were forced to work on other games and eventually assimilated into the companies themselves. It's why I'm glad studios like ToysForBob became independent from Microsoft/Activision.

Let’s say another crash happens. What would the aftermath be? Because the problem back then was oversaturation of consoles, but now one big problem is oversaturation of publishers and games.
It kind of sounds like the industry wouldn’t crash, but many publishers would dissolve and a select few would rise from the ashes.

  • @sinjin8576
    @sinjin8576 Před měsícem

People keep talking about a big market crash but therell never be another one like before. Gaming is in such a different place and theres so many different tiers now.
I do think however there will be a massive culling of studios, publishers and major gaming companies in the next decade.
Companies will be forced to downsize and make titles for less...or die off.
This will also be the death kneel for alot of properties should some companies decide to take tjem to the grave and no one deem the rights worth the price.

Microsoft has the cash to swoop in, but we may not get exactly what we may be hoping for with that. They would be putting games on multiple platforms, they are a bit more hands off on projects, but they will absolutely push a narrative and agenda. Tomb raider would absolutely keep going the direction it is going.
I think the industry will start to pull back scope on games to control costs. We already see massive struggles to grow scope and push fidelity while having good performance and minimal bugs. Not every game needs to be a massive open world or have a deep endgame

If you look at the Middle Earth and friends group that Embracer made that group seems like it was designed by Xbox executives (and me) b3cause the division's brands and IP is basically made up of those parts that I believed MS would have gone after Embracer for prior to this restructuring. Now MS can buy it all one package (instead of just piecemeal buys from Embracer itself.) The Coffee Stain and its BFF division has as some interesting stuff, but a buyout Middle Earth would be a perfect strike move. I seriously think Embracer broke the company into this way for a MS buyout than anything. No matter what it signals to me they are setting up for acquisitions. Similar to how Sammy split off their video gaming to make it easier to buy Sega when the time comes rather than dealing with areas nobody (i.e. MS) would want like the betting end of Sammy or how EA split of into two divisions making it easier to sell off one or the other.
