  • In this video, I test how the MSI RTX 4090 SUPRIM LIQUID X graphics card paired with Intel i7 14700KF CPU performs in Alan Wake 2, which is the most demanding game of 2024 so far. Let's see if it is possible to enjoy the game at 4K, 1440p, or 1080p with maxed out settings, including Ray Tracing, DLSS 3 and Frame Generation.

    • @theivadim
      @theivadim  Před měsícem +135

It's definitely an interesting choice by the game devs. It looks like they decided to go pedal to the metal with graphics quality of the highest options, with future GPUs in mind. Current and older GPUs will have to lower those settings to achieve good performance. However, I can't say that they've cut out a lot of customers.
I've started playing Alan Wake 2 using an RTX 4070 SUPER at 4K, High preset, no Ray Tracing, DLSS Balanced, Frame Gen ON. And I had a good time. The RTX 4090 simply took it to the next level by allowing me to use Ray Tracing and max out every graphics setting.
The next generation of graphics cards will open this experience to a wider audience. Are they future-proofing their game? It does look stunning. There's nothing else like it out there right now.

It looks better than cyberpunk imo. When devs are making a game that is the next level of most demanding games out there.. it only makes sense to allow for settings that will chug even on the fastest GPU.. otherwise you're leaving fidelity on the table. This game is not unoptimized in my experience... It's just that beautiful. There will always(should always) be games that bring the fastest GPUs to it's knees so that people that can afford those GPUs have the options to push the envelope of graphics fidelity. It's the reason you buy that type of GPU.

Game developers do not necessarily make games for current gen hardware. Games like Cyberpunk are made years in advance when it comes to features and respectable technology that can power all those features within the game. Example is path tracing. So just because CP2077 was released by the end of 2020 does not mean that hardware from 2020 (or 2021 or 2022 or 2023) can power it to its fullest potential.

And last i heard, the sales of this game wasn't as expected, makes sense when you think most people are still on 3060 tier of graphics card, and this game preset scaling isn't really good with lowest setting still need decent hardware to run, and even if you can run it at low, it doesn't look as good since the game mechanics is developed around RT, like broken reflections and mirror, bad shadow casting, and poor quality ssr.

Furthermore, I don't like 1080p when it comes to 27 inches or bigger screens. I prefer larger screen and higher resolution and I'd rather boost the FPS by using DLSS or FSR. Initially, I wanted to go for like an OLED monitor, because I am coming from a MacBook, which has the best display out of any laptops, the contrast ratio, the display presets, the DCI-P3 coverage, the HDR, but then I realized it's useless to pay 1200$ for a similar monitor at 4k for gaming.

From my many years of experience:
There's always one or two games that are ahead of their time when it comes to graphics quality. But then 1-3 years later new AAA games launch with the same system requirements. That's how progress happens. Hardware becomes outdated fast.
We've seen similar situations with Red Dead Redemption 2, Control, Cyberpunk 2077. It almost feels like these games have been built with future GPU generations in mind while still allowing current-gen GPUs to play using Medium or High settings.

To be fair, the fact that you can't turn off DLAA takes a major hit in fps. If you were able to completely take out the native resolution AI processing besides frame generation , I guarantee you'll gain much higher fps results. DLAA is the best when it comes to Anti-Aliasing visually but sadly I don't think I see another option that is way less taxing in this game like FXAA + TAA, for example. DLAA is what's holding this game back as a "default" setting but in reality it's just the "ultra setting", subjectively, for Anti-Aliasing, which takes a major hit in comparison to just removing AI completely. You can test this out in Forza Horizon 5, for example. DLAA, as a non-upscaler for resolution, and, focuses purely on polygon edge upscaling for great Anti-Aliasing is better than MSAA visually and efficiently, in exchange for fps. Hope this makes sense, just my opinion. I'm currently running on a 4080 Super, testing this theory out in other games.
In simple terms DLAA results in less fps vs having no AI at all. Sorry if I sound repetitive. Trying to explain this the best I can.

DO NOT ANYONE DO FUCKING NOT Lock your fps to 60 when using DLSS-FG. that makes the game render at 30fps with fake frames added to achieve 60. no matter what game you do that in it will feel like SHIT. even when using a controller which 99 percent dont on pc. with a mouse it feels horrible. you need atleast 60 NATIVE frames per second to us FG. i personally only use it when i have atleast 75 and only in single player games. dont use it at all in multiplayer if you want to have somewhat of a chance against gen z and there gfuel habit.

❤ 100% true, 30fps - 40fps is pretty floaty before FG, im happy enough with 50fps+ prior to FG, butnlimiting fps to 60fps with FG is a no go... way too floaty and the guy in video should have mentioned it.

The RTX 4090 is generally a great Native 1440p GPU, most seem to think 4K but even older / current games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Control, Remnant II, etc. are "optimal" at Native 1440p on a Native 1440p Display.
So what so you think is going to be the case going forward with even more demanding games running UE5, etc?
Many don't want to hear this probably because they bought into the 4K hype and purchased a 4K display but it is what it is.
    I'd take Native 1440p / 90 FPS + over 4K / ~ 60 FPS every time regardless.

Good games is what matter. Hardware is important but if it cannot be utilized, it becomes useless.
But sadly, too many hardware variation nowadays game developer adopted one software for all strength. Which means, the graphic will be lower resolution and blurry when scaled down to satisfy lower end hardware.
Have you seen how sharp a PS1 game and those classic Nintendo games look? Many titles today can't even match that kind of quality when they are set lower, which is laughable.

Dare I say the only reason the 4090 doesn't run well in Alan Wake 2 is because it was a game that was made for consoles also.
I'm playing Once Human at high ultrawide resolution and getting great fps.
Even though they are two different games Once Human looks fabulous. It was made for mobile and PC. It is no slouch when it comes to visuals. And it doesn't even have RT or upscaling from AMD, Intel or NVIDIA in it. It has a resolution slider though.
Even my RTX 3080 laptop at 1080p* was getting 100fps in Once Human.
Again two different games. I'd rather play Once Human. And I love RT and DLSS technology.
Games for PC need to be made from the ground up for PC. Not console first.
    Added note:
I meant to put other examples like the Last of Us remake and Dragon's Dogma. I apologize for not adding this but as usual I was on my phone and in a rush. 😊

expecting 5000 series to be called PTX 50*0
just for how much people blame it on ' path tracing being ultra high end ' technology
this game looks worse than the average 500 mb single dev random game that runs at 4k 200 fps and have path tracing
why is it that even when there is no path tracing on screen the game doesn't get 10 fps higher?
you look at the sky and the game renders in same time everything surrounding you even when you don't see it
remove the shit rendered behind you and you get the expected rtx 4090 fps for 4k
this year i was expecting games to have real time quality parallax and interactive normal maps
you step on mud, you leave a real shoe trace on mud, not some ugly circle
you sprint in mud, you actually slip and throw mud from shoes behind, and still modify the ground where they fall
    same with sand
still waiting axes in games to have their real destiny of chopping wood realistically
oh wait, we shit ourselves with " reflexions "
wait until you put something between you and an object1 and you no longer see the object1 in the clear water reflexion because the path tracing glitches out
if you see light as in this game you have a terrible eye disease, that's not how an eye exposes light
better copy the engines of BF1 and BF5, GRB and GRW, RoTR and SoTR,
the forest 2014 had better realism and better graphics in its first day, 10 year difference and we have this, a world that barely interacts with the player and is blamed on some crap called path tracing
