Thanks for your story. I feel I lucked out getting mine more recently missing the whole adapter mess with Cablemod etc. I think they should change the connector but it's an amazing card. I max out 1440P now native, will possibly go 4K in the future. I still prefer the 4090 FE to my 7900XTX, but I can see a lot of people using something like a 7800XT and just FSR/be happy at the midrange. Thanks for the video.

& The maintenance needed on these cards lol. It definitely feels like you can't just plug and play with a 4090, there's so much seemingly that goes into even running it. Of course it runs great but man the stuff you have to monitor on a 4090 is wild (in comparison)

I got a 4090 at launch, and have paired it up with a 13700k as well as an ultrawide oled monitor. It's actually insane.
Yeah it's more than enough in almost every situation.
I have a 4090 but a i7-1100k and is bottlenecking the card even at 4K. Doesn’t help that newer AAA games are all cpu intensive

The 13700K is not enough CPU for a 4090. But then, neither are the 7800X3D or the 14900K. The 4090 is awesome, but if the sword is too heavy to properly swing, what good is it?
I bought a 1080ti w/ i7/7700k back 7 years ago or sumthn. And thats how I plan to purchase when it comes to teh 5090. Even if its $2500 and lasts 5 years. Thats $500/year I spent to damn near guarantee I wont have to address upgrading anytime soon. I have a motto. "Buy once, cry once." And it rarely lets me down

I went from a GTX 680 which I used for 7 years to a GTX 1660 Super that I used for 3 years and currently I have an RTX 4080 because I saw a deal which was just a no brainer.
Combined with the R7 7700X and 32GB DDR5 6000MHz RAM. This 4080 already is just... wow. I can play every game I ever wanted to play on max. settings on high fps.
I couldn't even imagine the power of a 4090. 😅 so yeah, nobody really needs a 4090.

i pushed my 12v connector on my 4090 in like it owed me money. The 12v 2x 8pin connector that came with my corsair is very tight fit with my rog strix 4090. There is zero lateral movement in the connection with that cable
Yup. I made sure it was seated properly and so far no issues. Been using mine for like a yr now.
Needed it to run a 7680x2160 monitor for sim racing. I don't feel lucky or blessed lol, I work my ass off, and spent 2 decades being working poor before my endeavors paid off enough that I can easily buy a $2400 gpu (white rog strix...) in my mid 40s... I also drive a mid tier pickup with 200k miles. Buddy of mine spent more on Taylor Swift tix for his wife and daughter lol.... and that's 1 night.
It's funny you mention the pickup, I almost left in a second describing the 2013 Honda fit I drive. The video was just getting to long.
All I will say is, hey man... whatever makes you happy. PCs are if anything kinda an affordable hobby when you start to look at car parts, camera gear etc.

@@techwandoUS I have a relatively pricey sim racing setup.. ihave about 15k in it including the pc. That might buy me tires and brakes for 1 real race season lol... and I mentioned the truck because i have friends who buy a new premium truck every 3 years, have a corvette, and a harley lol. so when they give me crap for how much i spend to " play games", I kinda laugh..

Anyone thinking about the future of video cards might be interested in the fact that motherboards are coming out with the power delivery in the PCI slot.
I think we're getting to the point of diminished returns as these cards become gargantuan. A new series of cards every two years doesn't allow enough time to shrink the die sizes. Pretty soon, we're all going to he buying cases according to how large the GPU is going to be
100% agree on the timeline, it would be nice to see a 3 year cycle, give us a little more time. Seems like AMD might be doing just that this year ironically. Nvidia is producing too much money to want to stop.
I really hope the cards don't get much bigger too 😬
And need their own nuclear plant to power it.
I've been buying nvidia for twenty years. The releases used to be yearly. Sometimes twice in the same year two different series.
@@yjzep9922 They were certainly less eventful too back then. They'd just slight out releases randomly. Since the 700 series it's been a lot more "formal" or predictable.
I estimate in 5 yrs the graphic card will be two feet long.
Turns out the secret to me enjoying PC gaming as much as console gaming was to have a card where I could just turn everything to ultra and start playing without ever bothering to tune my settings.
No such things as too much power with VR. We are still probably 3 graphics card generations behind unlocking just the current VR head sets potential.
Yeah, certainly with VR sets like Pimax Crystal Super coming. I'm personally using a RTX 4090 + Pico 5 right now. But I will upgrade to a higher end VR set when the RTX 6090 is on the market. Hopefully that will be powerful enough.
After owning a 4090 for 6 months, all I can say is that if you can afford a 4090, you should get one.
its 2 years old better to wait for the 5000 series no point buying it now and regretting when you see the 5000 series. This gpu flagship should be bought when its released thats the only way to justify the price!
Worst time to buy one, 2 years old AND Price increased ..... it used to cost 2,300$ now its 3500$ in my country after all the sanctions and shit. Plus 5090 is close so might as well get that on release thats what i did when i got my 4090 just bought it on release and built a whole pc arpund it
@skilletbakes420 yea I did get my 4099 for $1100 on Facebook marketplace. The 5000 series will probably be a worthy upgrade. Still the 4090 has at least 4 more years of decent performance.

I can confirm that the worry about the cable is a thing. I turn off my PSU and disconnect my PC every day because I don’t trust it when I go off to work or something.

Owning a high end card (7900xtx) for the first time I definitely developed thoughts about GPU maintenance and its longevity ("I invested so much, maybe I should change thermal pads at some point" etc.). The 4090 is in its own league but making such an investment comes with the expectation of having a free of issues, high quality experience in every way and a usage of at least 5 years. The reality is obviously different and I feel like the past 2 gens high end cards are more experiments than established, well tested products. Thats why I went all in and got the nitro+ top of the line model, just to minimize any quality issues..So far its been amazing, but not everyones GPU works well in their system.
That said, this is a very nice review! I had to make my own (fairly short) researches and adjustments to make my 7900xtx work without issues (so far) and I hope u can enjoy your 4090 for as long as possible.
Appreciate the well written comment. Happy to hear you are having good experiences with the 7900XTX. Lately I hear nothing but good from the owners of that card.
As for your concern with thermalpads, honestly if the cooler design is good and they are using decent pads (which you can use a GPU teardown site/video to see) then I'd say leave the pads for a long time and just replace the paste the second your warranty is up. The only time I was personally changing pads often was on the FE 30 series cards, because for some weird reason they decided to use really bad, almost paper like thermalpads.
@@techwandoUS Ofc. Ive seen some "low quality" pads on other top models and decided to go for Sapphire just to make sure. But since top GPUs seem to stay very cool (UV+OC-ed mine, 50°C , 65 °C hotspot) maybe maintenance is less of a problem, unless temps start rising unreasonably high. Thanks for your insight.
Out of all the cards I own and have own I love the 4090, it's so powerful but also quite efficient, however that connector is going to be something that will more than likely devalue these cards or make it a headache for every owner. I got my TUF 4090 day one and last week after 18 months of use the connector melted on it. I had to document and show it because it melted on both sides GPU and PSU side. The PSU side got fused and couldnt be unplugged.
I work with high and low voltage electricity always plugged mine fully. I think what happens over time and this is probably unavoidable is that due to the high current going through the wires the plug gets warm and cold, warm and cold and the thin pins expand and contract increasing resistance in the connection and heat until it escalates one day.
I've heard every theory from user error to plugs being rated only for 20 or 30 plugins per cable. It's just a bad design period. I like the idea of one plug to rule them all but any replacement of an already established proven method should be an improvement. This connector isn't over the standard 8 pin connector. I've abused those connectors plugging and unplugging them so much without any issues ever whereas with this one it's almost a given it will one day fail and now I cant leave my computer to render and walk away. That's a huge side effect imo.

@@Zwank36 Were you able to get a replacement relatively hassle free? I had an extended warranty with my local MC so they just gave me a new one. Got another TUf because I like the build quality and cooler especially.

It's a shame you had to go through that, and I have also been saying the same thing. It feels inevitable. It will probably happen to a lot of them as time goes on. Probably right out of their warranty window 😅

What we really need to do is tell Nvidia to stop being so greedy and sabotaging their own products (already overpriced) so you have to buy another. Why hasn't anyone put the blame on Nvidia yet? This is clearly a problem that they created to make more sales.
Awesome video! Waiting to upgrade my 2080ti. Have been thinking of getting an used 4090 but I might wait for the 5090 instead. If you game, and edit video on the same machine. What type of driver are you running (studio/gaming)? Also it looks like you are running davinci? Is it utilizing the GPU to boost the editing/rendering performance?
Appreciate it! I swap between the gaming driver and studio driver actually. Was planning a video around this very topic just need to get to it.
Davinci resolve also runs really well on both drivers, but I did happen to notice less freezing of the application with a mixture of video file types while running the studio driver. I need to do more tests to really confirm anything, but I currently a lot of 4K Sony footage, AV1 OBS, and 1080p upscaled CZcams mp4s, and when you overlap them, occasionally you run into every now and then.
I've been struggling to find a decent video talking about owning a 4090 for the long run so thanks for this, i'm looking into grabbing one of these bad boys over the 4080 because of the 24gb of vram it offers so i might be able to render 1 or 2 pixels more in premiere, but after you said to wait i'm curious do you think i should wait even for video editing purposes?
Thats an excellent question, and honestly a little bit tough to answer, simply because I do not know what the 5090, or 5080 is going to bring. I would say if you're doing video editing professionally and your time is money then of course going out and getting a card as soon as possible would make the most sense. If it's more of a hobby or something that could wait a little... then we are a summer length away from new releases/announcements.
All this being said though, the major difference you will see across all modern cards in video editing will be things like timeline scrolling with heavy effects, render times, and a few other things like overall system responsiveness.
I used an ARC card for one month, just a A750 with 8GB, and although it did take a bit longer to render, and I sometimes had to pre optimize 4k files for smooth scrolling, it still felt really good.

This is the first GPU where I needed something to keep it from sagging and possibly breaking over time. My Asus TUF 4090 came with a little metal magnetic stand thing that is adjustable. I made sure all power cables are completely plugged in. I feared the melting adapter issue. I've had this card since last October and it's been nothing but amazing. I have it in an i7-3700 system. I was using the i7-8700K and didn't want to bottleneck this new GPU. The i7-8700K was still running games great when paired with a powerful GPU. I also just felt the need to move on from six year old hardware. I fear hardware failure when things get so old. I'm using the Lian Li LANCOOL 216. This case has excellent cooling. The 4090 is so big that it gets real close to the two giant from case fans keeping things cool and quiet.
it would help to also focus at what monitors one is using, as to where i am gaming on a 57" ultra wide with over 16 million pixels, where I need a RTX 4090 (which I have and love it)....
thing about 4090 pricing often makes me smile, like people forgot that nvidia made titan rtx for $2500, they will go to whatever price they want and 1600 isn't that high in the grand scheme of things, like 10 series titan was $1300
Great video and breakdown. I absolutely love my 4090, it's just a beast with everything I throw at it. I don't think I'm gonna even look at 5080/5090 and skip to the 6000 series at this point in another 3 years which is kinda insane when we look back at the 2 year upgrade cycle a lot of us are on with GPU's. Star Citizen is the only game in the future I'm really looking forward too that's demanding and it runs it fantastic. I just can't see needing an upgrade for many years to come. Yes, the price is high but I'm gonna get more years out of this card vs. all the cards I've owned over the past couple of decades.

I owned a RTX 4090 FE for a week and it died in 24 hours lol. No idea what happened, I walked away from my PC with my music playing and came back and my PC wouldn't wake up as music was still playing.. Noticed the GPU LED was off and rebooted and GPU was dead. No power going to GPU. Swapped it out for a MSI RTX 4090 Slim. Didn't wanna bother risking getting a Refurbished one from Nvidia.
Undervolt is the thing to do. I’m not conservative. Running on 750w psu too.. UV at .95v is the key to stock or better performance but 75-100 less watts. So 300-350w max. Oc memory by 800-1000 and do the curve oc. There’s a few videos on it. Very simple. Very effective. Can go as low at .9v without much loss. So probably 250-275w. And it’s insane still. Maybe 5-8% loss. My card doesn’t break 60c ever on 50% fan speed. Tuf non oc
You should check the temperature on your psu. It might blow up if you reach 100% utilization on both cpu and gpu. You can use a cheap scanner
@@tyrellwreleck4226 I’m well aware of the power draw. And always have software running to check it. Corsair hx 750i. The psu fan doesn’t even come on most sessions. No joke. It’s totally fine.. total sys power draw is below 600w even at stock with no UV running cyberpunk or similar game…It could run this way non stop for a decade probably. Sure, I wouldn’t buy a new 750w psu when I replace this one. Probably 8 years old or older…. I’ll go with a 850w min but might just go to a 1k watt to have plenty of headroom, I like the idea of it not having a fan come on ever. But I think in general most people are over cautious and/or worry about stuff that will never be an issue. Also used a cheap 3 to 1 8 pin to 16 pin connector from Amazon. Did upgrade it to Corsair 2 to 1 cable tho. So it only plugs into 2 8 pins on psu… still can pull around 500-550w tho in testing. And this is close to the max psu rating. But I wouldn’t ever run it this hard. Again, this gpu is so damn efficient and looses so little performance capping v at .95. Max is 350-400w tops this way and is very close or better than stock. Of course with mem oc and curve oc. Runs about 30-45hz lower than stock v
@@user-tz7jj7bl6q thats not the point he was trying to make. There is a reason why PSU's are rated for 80%. Thats the peak effecience. Any PSU running above 80% utilisation can have issues. Even without heat, capaciters can still blow when used at or close at 100% for long periods of time. Every PSu should have around 20% overhead capacity for your system of thew way you use your system. Thats just how electronics work.
This is aspecialy true when you think that any component in your system can fail and it will just emergency kill off you system and not damage anything, but a failed PSU usualy takes down components with its death. And you will realy kick yourself in the head when your pricey GPU dies because of a blown PSU that has been utilized close to 100% for to long.
@@ronniebots9225 na.. its fine. And it might run in the 500-500w range even at stock. Closer to 400w with uv. Total power. Not just gpu. This is under 80% in both cases… hmmm…600w is 80%.
I use a CORSAIR Premium 600W PCIe 5.0 / Gen 5 12VHPWR PSU Cable for my Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC and haven't had any issues what so ever. The plug has a snug fit and connects with a very audible click. It also uses solid wire instead of stranded. My motto is click it and forget it.
I have heard good things about the Corsair 12VHPWR cable. Haven't even seen one burn up yet.
Is a 600w PSU not pushing it a bit for a 4090? They advise on 850w minimum.
I have one of the MSI MPG pcie 5 psu's with the right cable and thats been problem free too

4090 tier GPUs are never needed for just gaming but that didn't prevent people from buying them in droves. It's also a good investment. If you sell it at the right time, it could almost pay for the 5090. Think of it like a subscription service that gives you the latest and greatest at a fraction of its cost
I'm buying a 5090 because it's my childhood dream to build the best PC out there. Thanks to god money isn't an issue now.
I've found that I prefer the look of 1440p versus 2160p. The edges of objects seem too crisp and everything is soooo clearly well-defined that games seem almost less "realistic" in 4k.

Actually, in some countries we hope to find a bargain for 2000$. I paid 2500$ for mine, and it was the cheapest on the market, and the cheapest not by little, but around 400$ cheaper than most.
I got my founders card for $1599. Never had any issues with the connector. It runs very cool. The power draw for me has been great, but then I have solar on my house so that helps a lot. I drive a Samsung Neo Odyssey G9. I have no complaints at all.
Got a 7700K / 1080ti rig for the past 7 years. It’s been an amazing setup. I’m scared the 4090 or 5090 won’t have that kind of longevity. I’ll be getting something soon, though. 4080 seems tempting just to save some coin
For me, a big factor in getting me to buy the 4090 over anything else was Ai.
And there was the awful pricing that AMD brought to the Table. I waited 6 months before I said F* it, and bought.
999 for the XTX - 1199 for the 4080 - 1499 for the 4090
I don't regret it. It should be very future-proof and does everything I want to do and game RIGHT NOW, and Games have been BS for a while and that does not seem to change...
1440p upscaled to 4k is still wonderful, and even 1080p to 4k is great.
No worries other than the Cards lifespan, which I hope extends with undervolt and powerlimit.
I have had a 4090 for about a year now with moderate to heavy use and had no problems. No mods at all. I think people aren't always seating the cables enough. If it's loose it might melt. My main issue with this card is no cpu can get anywhere near full use of this cards power.

I'm running two watercooled 4090's in my Workstation (mostly doing CGI with C4d) and one aircooled 4090 in a Rendernode. Fortunately I decided not to go with the Cablemod 90° adapter, but I've been always aware of the dangerous 12VHPwr connector.... Plz nvidia, bring a new power connector to the 5xxx Generation!
I honestly went with the 7900 XTX than a rtx 4090 mainly due to the 12 volt connector. My co-worker's MSI rtx 4090 connector melted on him. That pretty much gave me my decision to go with the 7900 XTX.
This is coming from a guy that has purchased mainly Nvidia cards - 98000 GT Ultimate, gtx 660, gtx 770, gtx 970, 1080 and now on my 1st AMD card - 7900xtx.
4090 is honestly the only card you'll ever need or want for a very long time. Just make sure you don't buy into the histeria about the plug and be checking it every other day. It is an issue but if you make sure it's in all the way and the wires aren't bending at harsh/stressful angles you should be OK . I've also had mine for over a year now and it's been fine. I haven't unplugged it since the build was finished and it is using a right angle adapter bought from Amazon which I'm pretty sure it came from China believe it or not.....

It wouldn't add a dime over any other card if you did the same workload. This card doesn't just magically peg itself at 600w 24/7.
Most of these are locked at 450w, which could possibly use about 12kwh a day, at 100% use.
Most people are going to game, which won't use 100%, and even then maybe only 8hrs a day (which puts you into a heavy user category.
All that being said it's probably going to use 50-360kwh a month. My power here is $0.16/kwh. So $8 to approximately $55 a month.
What this math doesn't show is that your current system probably used 90% of that already, so the difference for me was almost $0
If your workload is big it does add a bit...mine added about 20-30kwh a month on average but i bought a huge 4k 80w display too so that adds a little too
I bought a MSI Suprim X 4090 in January, probably the worst time to buy one, but I was too tempted... I agree with the general message for gamers who are planning to use it only for gaming: it's not worth it, especially with the 50 series right around the corner... on the other side... i won't upgrade my AM4 system anytime soon and so I'm limited to PCIe 4.0 which means I won't benefit from the 50 series cards anyway since these cards will most likely adapt the PCIe 5.0 standard, so yeah... great video btw, really liked it.

@@techwandoUS Yes, undervolted 5800x3D and 4090, I really like the performance and honestly, I see no need to upgrade for the next years, 4k@120fps should be no problem for most of the games I play (non-competitive) 👍🏻
Been running a styleGAN3 script for 14 hours now with the 4090 at 97%. Its still only running around 150 degrees f. GPU is amazing.

If you just game, you might want the 90 series card, but you sure don't need it.
For content creators or anyone that would use the card as part of their work it makes a lot of sense to get one.
The biggest issue I had with my 4090 Founders was actually getting it to display properly with my monitor - had lots of display errors and black screens initially. It seems to have sorted itself out now - but I would be worried trying to sell it to someone in the future.
I ironically had some of those issues early on with my 4080 also. I think there was a slow growing list of patches to fix display connectivity. I had an old Bravia 4k that just flat out didn't work, now it works.
While you were talking about how high the wattage can get on the 4090, you should have also mentioned how power efficient the card can be keeping the majority of its performance at a 70% power limit and 300w. Something to keep in mind for those who want a powerful card, but not the high diminishing returns for all that extra heat.
der8auer made a video on that exact topic showcasing the expected performance for the suggested power limit. Undervolting is not recommended for the 4000 series FYI, OptimumTech made a video on that as well for anyone interested.
Appreciate the comment, yeah it's been brought up a few times in this comment section. 70% seems to be the sweet spot for balanced power to performance. I'll second that Optimum Tech video also, good watch.

What mount do you use for your monitors?
Honestly it's a bunch of cheap Amazon basics, and then the far right monitor was donated. Nothing special. It was a pain to line them up cause they were all slightly different.
I've owned a 4090 TUF OC for a year and your points are spot on. It's a powerful card that the average consumer just doesn't really need. I've had to convince friends to not buy one simply because they just didn't need it. I had to get a replacement as I was having issues with driver crashing and thankfully my RMA experience was fast and great. They sent me a factory new replacement just under a week of diagnosing the issues with my card. During the down time of not having the card I had to use my 3080 ti and it just felt so different, once you get your hands on something like it, it's just hard to get off it.

There were changes with the ATX specification to prevent it from operating without a solid connection. Size is great you don't have to deal with noise. Most of this stuff doesn't have anything to do wit YOUR experience and actually using the card. I still believe if you get MSRP (I got 5% under MSRP with MC card) it's WAY better value than the 4080. I know a lot of benchmarks show 20-30% uplift but that was what was available at release. There is 60% more hardware available.
On older cards, one doesn't loose much performance just by setting power to 66%. Would that be an option here?
Very Rarely does anybody who actually owns a 4090 dislikes it. I think the majority of ppl who bought the card had the money to spend and are happy with their purchases.
Nobody ever dislikes their performance, but many people have expressed that they dislike the caveats that come with owning the card.
Good video. I got a 4090 and after being a life long gamer (I'm 50 now) it might simply being too much video card for what I do, I mostly play older games now. A 4070ti Super might do just as well for me.
Physics are real SO I laid my pc case flat on it's side (It's behind my large screen tv) so the pcie cables have no tension and card's pcb won't crack under it's weight. The 4090 dwarfs a 3090 in size and weight.
I was toying with getting a 4090, but the price was ridiculous, so I plumped for a 4080 (sale price), and to be honest, I'm really happy with it
I spent $1,900 on a used founders 3090 during covid. Still using it. So don't feel bad about over spending. I probably out did everyone on that. I'll probably go for the 5080.
Went from a eVGA 3090 rtx to a Zotac 4090 just under a year ago....been in love with this card every since. If you are a VR sim(flight/racing) gamer its literally god sent. my biggest gripe is the INSANE power consumption. Gotta pay to play so they say.....
Don’t regret anything about my 4090. It’s a beast of a card and it will serve me for a very long time before I have the slightest thought of having to upgrade.
Don't feel bad about owning this card. It's a beast, and you utilize it. Don't let people who are jealous bring you down when they pretend they wouldn't take a 4090 if it was offered to them. Every single one of them would, no exception. Most of them would even scalp it if they could. The things people say publicly vs what they actually do in private are two different things.

One year of having a 4090 with a 13900k build. I won’t be upgrading for a few years. But overall, it ain’t worth it for most people. I do work and games on it. It is a fuckin monster.
As someone who has owned 4090 since day 1 the powerdraw is very subjective matter as learning to mess with the vf curve and undervolting is a must do on the 4090. You can generally reduce the wattage by alot and losing not much fps like setting two undervolts one for video editing ect thats slightly more agressive and one for gaming.
Lenovo has had (they go in and out of stock on it; just checked and it was currently in stock when I posted, it was out of stock this morning) the MSI Liquid Suprim X 4090 for $1,749 and discount codes can be applied. For me this brought the price down to $1,525. The liquid cooled card is much smaller (in width it is only up to two slots versus something more like 4 in width). So, those factors together ended up moderating (somewhat) a couple of the drawbacks mentioned in the video (though the price is still very steep).
$1,525 is still a lot better than something like the $1500 4080 Strix. Still a solid deal, nice purchase!

Yeah, I have a couple of additional use cases as well. 1) I plan to use it for GPU multi-core programming / processing and 2) I use a freely available older, beta version of madvr coupled with videoprocessor, a capture card and the 4090 for real-time video processing (mostly for dynamic tone mapping to a projector in a theater setup). The equivalent hardware device (the madvr envy extreme - which is basically a PC with a high end NVIDIA card and the software) goes for around $9,495 to $14,995.

I just purchased a i9-13900k cpu and will be slowly buying components around that. I'm estimating I'll be complete around september. So I was thinking about the 4080 super but I'll see. Probably be my last component to complete the build.

As a fellow 4090 owner I would agree with most of the gripes that you have about the card, the only thing I disagree with is regarding the power draw. I have a founders 4090 which is technically capable of pulling 600w, but I have never actually seen it pull anywhere near that except in benchmarks like furmark and 3dmark. Even the most demanding modern games like Alan Wake 2 or Cyberpunk only pull about 380-400w maximum with path tracing and everything maxed out, with my undervolt it pulls about 250-280w. I upgraded from a 3080 which often pulled more power than my 4090 does.

The 4090 is definitely A very efficient card if used properly and tuned, but most people don't do that. Especially if they have like a strix model or something that's high-end that just instantly sucks as much power from the wall.
Also, some people probably don't see the full power draw because the games they play might not even fully use the card.

9:45 this is my biggest problem with building my new pc. my wish since about 2014 is to play in 4k max res with 240fps. How much years doest it take to achieve that? I mean 4k isnt new anymore. I just want to have a freaking beast to play with. not to think about upgrading every year so i could hold that standart.
I had a GTX 1070 8 gig model overclocked with an Intel i7 7700k processor 16 fb gskill ram till a week ago. Got a 3070 founder edition I would say that’s a good upgrade for the price I paid

i got a 4090 on launch (camped out at microcenter to get one) and although its expensive I haven't regrated the purchase its honestly amazing especially if you get high end oled monitor to pair with it. I only upgrade every other generation or so, so i wont be getting the 5090 but this card being as good as it is im not worried about games in the future struggling to run until the 60 series come out
Got my 4090 running undervolted at 0.9 and power-limited to 70% (5% perf. hit)or often even to 50% (25% perf. hit).
Does everything I need it to do (high Refresh Shooter and crisp 60 or 90 FPS for normal Games at 4k) and I am still on a Dark Power 750W PSU with a 7800X3D (80W at max).
I'm actually eyeballing the 5090 just because I can do some serious rendering work with it, I can literally repay the card with a couple of jobs.
Buying a *90 series card just for gaming it feels like buying a Ferrari F40 just to do groceries.
Imagine being able to almost hot-plug the GPU like Linux allows you to, using Nvidia drivers and everything. I just shutdown my system. Pull 1080Ti. Plug 3060Ti. Boot. Launch game.
That's crazy, had no idea you could do that.
So this is how I mitigated all those issues:
1: I bought a Corsair 12V-HP aftermarket cable that goes straight from my HX100w PS into the GPU, , and I’ve not heard anyone have an issue with that set up, if you can afford a 4090 you can afford a £20 cable.
2: I bought my 4090 direct from Nvidia and got it at msrp £1569.99
3: I bought a Velocty2 water block for £200 for my 4090 and cut the size down drastically which also helps with the weight on the pcie slot.
3: I paired my 4090 with a 7800x3d and max system power draw that I’ve seen with a full custom loop is 600w
Yes it’s expensive, but it really is a Titan class card, and that’s what you should compare it too in terms of price and performance not a XX80ti

Waiting for the 5090 to come out since that's the best opportunnity to snag a deal with a 4090. If I buy it new, I will do it via Micro Center with the extended protection in case it catches on fire and they will just replace it 🙃
I love every minute of owning it. Playing in 4K on 4K screen is a privillage benefit. Still 78 deg C while gaming at the moment.
I got a 4090 at MSRP for the founders tax free shopping from the px, so I got a good deal on it. I'm going to be honest, I have a cable mod cable I seated it once made sure it was seated properly and clicked and I have never looked back. Haven't checked it, don't even worry about it. Hell my PC is usually on over night and when I leave the house unless I just decide to turn it off. I really don't worry about it.

Hey there. I have purchased well over 100 Zotac GPUs over the years for customer machines, but most have been budget systems 1060s/2060s/3060s etc.
The biggest issue they have are fan noise, or dying fans. The 4080/90 I have tried was very quiet up until around 70% fan speed.
Other than that they aren't as bad as people say they are. If anything I think they are a step above some companies like Colorful, yeston, even gigabyte... But they have a different issue in itself.
I was considering the zotac 4090 extreme but got turned off reading about the fan noise, coil whine and the card being built with a heap of plastic. Ended up going with a Gigabyte Gaming OC and have had a great time. But from what I read, zotac still have a great cards. Just depends what you're willing to put up with and the aesthetic you're going for.
got a 4090 since January 2023... total gamechanger for me... I now do my arch viz renders 100% on GPU, no more CPU renders, also opened the world to me to do video walkthroughs in a matter of hours or a couple of days, instead of insane times or just realistically refusing to do videos

I feel like the limitations of number of screens is an issue not being covered. I can only run 4k.240hz & 4k.144hz before i hit my screen output caps.

Ive been running a 4090 fe since end of 2022 and havet touched the cable apart from when i changed my mobo and got a 7800x3d. Its run fine so far no issues 🤞
i own a 6800xt and this thing blows through everything that i want it to with relative ease, especially with the easy to use frame gen that can be enabled in every game that i play. ff7remake 1440p, max settings, up to 240fps, as well as horizon zero dawn. very little to no perceivable difference in latency, and tons of VRAM for games like RE4 Remake and TLOU pt1. we dont need cards like the 4090. most gamers wouldnt be able to tell the difference between the 4090 and the 6800xt let alone the 7900xtx or 7900GRE.

I've been upgrading every turn for 10 years now. The 4090 is the only card I ever bought that didn't leave me wanting even more. Even now after owning it for a full year. I am skipping the 50 series.

I have a 3080 12gb and other than alan wake 2. there have been no games ive played over the last year that have made me want to upgrade. everything runs at 1440p smoothly
No wonder. 3080/12 is just a tad bit slower than 4070 Super. And that one is a beast of a card for 1440p. Thanks to weak 4000 gen performance improvement, 3000 line-up is still relevant.

I built a pc for a client with a 4070 and it was within margin of error of my 3080 but was only using like 170w out of the box and was able to get it down to 160w with higher clocks than stock with afterburner. on my 3080 while undervolted draws 300-320 and when OC its over 400
Ive had a strix 4090 and i have had no problems with mine. Tbh the price was literally the only downside ive had personally. Hell i even have a cablemod 12vhpwr cable and ive left it running over night multiple times with no problems (so far)... ive had it for over 6 months now. But i also dont bother it. I made sure it was seated correctly and with the cablemod cable it had the satisfying click when it seated and then i left it alone
I do 4K video editing with multiple sources using a 4080 Super. It's been great; scrubbing has never been smoother. The 4090 felt like a typical flagship ripoff after seeing the various benchmarks. It's perhaps +20% faster at +60% cost, and is less power efficient. I undervolted my 4080S and it draws around 220W on full load. No worries about melting 12VHPWR connectors!
If I build a cutting edge PC with a 7900XTX, that same PC would have cost $700-1000 more with a 4090, which is often held back by every CPU currently available. Over the course of two years (which is how long a 4090 buyer will use it before buying the next top dog), that's $1.96 - $1.37 per day. Plus constantly worrying all the time about whether that 4090 is going to burn down. I tend to think about such things in terms of opportunity cost. So one could argue all I have to to have a 4090 instead of a 7900XTX is give up my morning and afternoon coffees from Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts every day for a year, but I already don't buy those coffees. For me, it's more of a one-time-purchase opportunity cost analysis. For $700-1000, I can build another whole reasonably capable backup PC, take a very nice long weekend excursion, or put new tires on my truck. And since I don't trace rays and don't constantly obsess over FPS (as long as the game plays smoothly), I can play any game at 4K and high to ultra settings with my 7900XTX. So there's zero benefit for me to game with a 4090 over a 7900XTX.
I remember during the $1 billion Powerball telling myself that if I won, the first thing I'm buying is an RTX 4090. (I did not win the lottery unfortunately)

For me the actual reality check is getting to the part where you say "[…] By 2026 you're gonna be running pretty much anything at 1440p.", where I do understand this is a subjective thing (as in 30 FPS is playable but not for some and they are definitely willing to sacrifice half the amount of pixels displayed on the screen for it) I also can't ignore that that has been the case forever basically as games release in more questionable states than ever before. And the real kicker is recalling how the GTX 980 Ti was a 4K graphics card, and it is able to play Far Cry 2 at 4K without any issues but for most games from the last decade you are safer with 1080p anyway.

I have always said that a 1080P game at ultra looks better than 4K at Low. When referring to the 4090 as a 1440p card, I mostly mean AAA titles above 60 fps at high settings will be probably what you can expect by 2026.
I had an Zotac 3090 which broke down after warrenty but I RMA:ed it still since the retailer I bought it from has really good customer support. And to my surprise, they switched it for an 4090 ! free of charge.
Zotac is pretty alright honestly. I have purchased a lot of budget cards through them. Happy to hear your experience.
I been running a Blender3D network with 2 4090s and both computers cost me just over $50 extra per month on my electric bill. I have a 240v power line specifically for the computers in the office due having a 1600 watt on one of them, so I know exactly how much the 2 systems cost me per month. These cards are overkill unless you need them for work reasons. If you are not constantly rendering like a mad man or maybe mining crypto, you really do not need such an expensive card and I too would recommend going with 4070's or 4080s. Just to note, I expect the 5090's run cost will be about the same as running 2 4090s. The system i built for my son has an older 4070 and I do not know of any game he has not been able to run on high settings including unoptimized games like Star Citizen.
Ok, so 12v cable is not that much of an issue for me, i bought a decent power supply with dedicated cable (no adapters) and it just works. Power consuption can be easily lowered with software limit to 90 or even 80% without significant performance loss, and the price is way too high I agree. It would be nice for 1200 USD. Ngreedia is pushing it.

I have a 4070ti card in my system which I absolutely adore. I can play pretty much anything at ultra or high settings. Only thing I don’t like is just the amount of noise it makes. I’m coming from an iMac so it’s probably not that bad for many dedicated pc players but for me I was surprised how noisy it is. Can’t imagine the 4090 is much quieter. Is this why most gamers play with headphones on these days?
Well, my 4070 Ti is very quiet. It depends on a certain cooler model, I guess. Mine is Palit Gamerock - a massive triple slot cooler with 3 fans. With slight undrvolt I can not really hear the card at all. CPU cooler is much louder in my case.
All 4090s are equi0ped with super massive coolers. So they all should be pretty quiet.

This card to this day still sells out when stock hits very high demand still. I just recently built mine few weeks ago trying to fully switch from console gaming. Still prefer console but for the best frame rate this thing is a champ.
