  • JL Audio 13W7 with a HD1200/1 vs Memphis Car Audio VIV1422 with a VIV2200.1 in this sound off we swap bass systems in a Dodge Charger and compare them against each other using a DB meter to measure how loud each system is. We use a 40hz 50hz and 60hz signal then move into music. The JL Audion system retails for $2700 and the Memphis is $1950. See which is louder!!!.....

The jl audio sub outperformed using less power. The Memphis sub used nearly double the amount of power and came up short. So in terms of what I seen was a subwoofer that was loud using a amplifier that's efficient enough to not tax an electrical system. You get what you pay for

This could easily be due to box rise and the jl amp having a regulated power supply.
Box design and install will matter vastly more that the base equipment.
The enclosure makes the largest difference. That's just hands down fact. Both subs are going to want entirely different enclosures to before optimally.

Not to mention the 1000/2 class ab. Less efficient, but the dynamic mosfet power supply was new, for the time. A regulated power supply. This when Rockford and other companies were taking advantage of igbt power amplification that while somewhat efficient, held high distortion. People were blinded by the simplified power boost, but had little knowledge of the harmonic distortion.

    1. You get what you pay for. 2. If you want it loud, clean, efficient, and in a relatively compact enclosure, then the W7 is hard to beat. I am stating this for the average Joe that only wants one or two subs in a daily driven vehicle. I am not talking about people who wall off a vehicle for the sole purpose of floating a farmer's coveralls. Someone who has a wide variety of musical preferences. JL has done their homework on the W7. I admit, I have heard the Memphis in person at a local shop and it sounds great in the showroom at low to moderate volume, but I can not speak for it when it comes to in-vehicle and at the limit listening. Bottom line: there is no perfect subwoofer OR enclosure. It all depends on your budget, listening preference, and how much room you can sacrifice for the installation. Remember, bass is a lot like drag racing. The more you want, (the faster you want to go) the more exponential the amount of money you will be paying. I have been doing car audio for 30 years and I speak from experience. I replaced two CHEAP Pioneer 15" subwoofers that were sealed in a 4 cu. ft. enclosure, with a single 12w7 in a 1.75 cu. ft. enclosure. Both setups were getting 1000 watts RMS, yet the 12w7 had half the enclosure size. I had both setups metered (back in 2002) and the 12w7 was 2.5 dB louder. The 15's sounded really awesome for what they were, but the JL W7 was better. The difference between them was on either end of the dB scale, at VERY low levels and at very extreme levels. None of my W7s ever suffered a failure. Honestly, I think most subwoofers have the potential to satisfy, as long as you don't cheap out too hard. I would always rather have some cheap subs in the right box than some high dollar subs in the wrong box. Great video though! I do hope to see some Term Lab results, and I think what Memphis has come up with, as far as cone area VS. excursion was quite clever! Sneaky sonsabitches, LoL!

Thanks for your comment the purpose of this video was show 1. JL Audio makes a great woofer in their W7 and is good for the guy that wants a lot of bass in his trunk not necessarily for the guy that competes or walls is car. 2. That Memphis makes a set up that is much less and sounds very similar to the JL set up. True the test equipment used was inexpensive but with all other things being equal it served its purpose. And yeah as soon as I get the Term pro stuff in and learn how to use it we will test again!! Thanks again for your comment and I hope others read it to see your perspective.

I know I have already commented, but I wanted to point out a few other things. 1. Both drivers should have been given the same amplifier to power them. 2. The Memphis has a slight advantage, since it came in a factory prebuilt enclosure. (factory enclosures most often have had some research & development) The JL13 seemed to have been loaded in a basic "JL Spec" enclosure. 3. The subs' in-car frequency response should have been measured with a calibrated mic while playing PINK NOISE. - this would somewhat reveal the test vehicle's cabin gain, and these drivers will perform much differently in different sized vehicles. I know this video was a couple years ago, but JL has raised the price of the 13W7 to currently $1,799.99. (which is ridiculous) The Memphis is showing a price of $999.95. Even when the JL was $1,449.99 - it wasn't at the same price point as the Memphis, but I get it. It's cool to see a comparison between two flagship drivers. I love my ported 13w7, but I am getting ready to design a custom sealed enclosure and see what it will do!

Memphis makes great woofers but they aren't on par with the W7. The JL has a flatter response, where the Memphis drops sharply as you get into higher frequencies. A 10db increase is what the human ear perceives as twice as loud and the JL is almost at 7, so that's going to be pretty noticeable. At 80hz I'd imagine it would tip even further in JL's favor. Efficiency is another thing to consider, a 13W7 is using half the power to produce the same volume, that's a big difference and plays a big part in system design if you now have to have hardware capable of delivering that extra 1k watts...
JL really has bass down, there's not many other woofer's out there that can compete with the sound quality of a JL woofer. A W3 or W6 are even difficult to compete with. They may not be the loudest and they are pretty pricy, but if you want clean, deep, and accurate bass they are the way to go.

  • @johnbooth3
    @johnbooth3 Před 3 lety +4

Great Video. I would like to hear you opinion on the sound quality of the 2. I know that is so subjective but can be somewhat data driven. The one item in all of this is the power. The JL Audio was louder with almost half the power. Yes it is more expensive but you will have to double the amount of power the car produces to drive the Memphis system which will increase the price. I would like to see 30 and 70 added to this test in the future. The other item I noticed is how consistent the SPL numbers were across the board on the JL compared to the Memphis which could show better sound quality as you don't have to tune the system as much. Maybe showing an average of the SPL readings between to the 2 to see what the average shows. Again very cool test.
For all those who didn't see the JL amp it is in the same spot as the Memphis. The camera shot doesn't show it that well but you can make out the amp and notice it is the HD1200.

The problem is that JL woofer is a 3 ohm speaker so it’s hard to find an amp that will work other than the JL Audio.
      LET ME EXPLAIN:
The JL amps output the same power between 1.5-4 ohm. Whereas your Rockford amp is rated at:
      400 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms
      800 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms
      1,200 watts RMS x 1 at 1 ohm
So at 3 ohm(the impedance of your W7) that amp only outputs about 600 watts. Now the W7 is rated between 400-1000 but you want to be at 1000 or close to it. JL was sneaky when they designed this woofer because no amp is optimized to be loaded to 3 ohms. Normally 1 ohm or 2 ohm.
And since the JL Amps put out the same power between 1.5-4 ohms their older Slash Series or HD are the best amps to run that woofer. The HD750/1 ($999)will work but the HD1200/1. $1499!
But if you don’t want spend so much here’s an alternative:
      1600.1 EVOX2 - 2Ω Here are the ratings
      Power @ 4Ω: 1 X 1056 WRMS
      Power @ 2Ω: 1 X 1600 WRMS
So at 3 ohms that should put you right in the middle 1300 or so. Which is plenty of power! Now those amps are a little over rated in my option so you should be just fine. And only $550

Edit listening to results maybe not audible in volume but type of bass would have to be different. I am biased though guys won't lie I'm a fan boy hard and I own the hd 1200 and hd 600 4 channel beautiful amps and so tiny and well made! You would test with a real spl meter and test across the frequency range to show that response.
