    The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 has a different look this year, but it's just one of the many upgrades that ASUS have put in to really support the gaming experience. While the specs with the AMD Ryzen 9 and RTX 4060 are familiar, an OLED display with VRR and better speakers could be the pushes that make this update something to consider. Come see what worked and what didn't with the ASUS Zephyrus G14 (2024)!

      Since no reviewer has pointed this out, I'd like to inform ppl from my own experience with an ROG laptop with a MUX switch that when you unplug and expect armory crate to turn off the dGPU to save power, it often fails due to many windows processes still using it and you'd have to manually go into armory crate to stop them and do the switch. When you do plug back in, Nvidia still runs in "optimus" mode (display signal buffers thru iGPU), limiting power and G-sync options.
      Nvidia does offer an "auto select" option ("Nvidia GPU only" when in game and "optimus" otherwise) but when you unplug, armory crate would still notify you that it cannot overwrite this "auto select" setting. You'd need to specifically and manually choose "optimus" for armory crate to turn off the dGPU.

    I got my 2024 G14 about a month ago, same config as yours in this video. I can confirm pretty much everything you mentioned and I'm happy with my purchase. The 16gb soldered isn't a huge dealbreaker for me, as I don't do a lot of heavy duty graphical work - whenever I'm editing video for work, I do it on an overpowered desktop rig at home. I did do some light editing on DVR while traveling (mostly just some small tweaks to existing projects) and I did not experience a lot of lag or stuttering. Audio editing for radio and podcasts works without a hitch. Casual gaming on older titles is fantastic on the OLED screen, for recent triple A titles I have to turn down the settings to high - not really a big deal, as the small OLED screen is super crisp and has great, bright colors. Watching 3K or 4K videos is amazing; can't see myself going back to a non-OLED panel after this. Normal productivity like writing, spreadsheets, emails and browsing is a breeze. Finally, battery time is not bad at all; depending on the task I get anywhere between 6 and 9 hours.
    Overall, I think this is a solid model. As you mentioned: it's not perfect, but for the first gen of a completely redesigned G14 I think it largely succeeds.

    Great video as always. Potential advice if you're sticking with this, is that the USB4 port on the left supports the same bandwidth as TB4 (40Gbs) so "most" TB4 will have a successful handshake and accept the USB4 port and it also runs up to 100W PD and supports pass-through so leave it in Performance Mode which you will miss out on around 2% CPU (multi-thread) and 10% GPU compared to Turbo/Manual but I'd prefer that and keep a one-cable solution. Cheers.

    One observation: for video content creators that don't utilise micro-sd's might not be ideal , but for ppl that use action cams a lot its perfect. I want with me in the field the thinnest package possible and the ability to just pull the micro SD card from a camera and put it fast into the laptop in order to empty the content.The extended battery life ,lets say compared to a Blade 14, also helps when on the go. You kinda want to previsualize your stuff on the go and when the temperatures are cold, lets say 10 C or below , every bit of battery life helps. Nice little review anyways!! Cheers! 😉

    My 2021 G14 lasted for years until I broke it. Finally a reason to upgrade. This 2024 model totally looks worth it. I got really tired of the FHD display, and seeing that the 2024 model has QHD and OLED and smaller bezels while still maintaining optimal performance in gaming is phenomenal. And the fact that they made it slimmer, sleeker, and lighter is fantastic too. I never had issues with 16gb in the old model either. I mean for only a few hundred dollars more than what I got the 2021 model for, and almost the same price considering Best Buy's sale price...why not get this thing? Especially paired with a carrying case and/or cooling pad, I guarantee you can't beat this for the price and size if your priority is gaming and consuming media!
    Btw, I think the laptop speakers sounded better than the soundcore speaker, at least through video audio lol.

    very nice video and voice editing. One question toward the end of the video about the lack of TB4, that is my main concern. is the lack of fully charging the laptop the only issue or even if it was fully charged, USB4 is inferior to TB4 for dock connectivity? Also, are there TB4 docks that can deliver 180 watts of power? for instance, I understand CalDigit TS4+ can only power up to 98watts. what I am getting at, is that I am not sure even with TB4 you would enjoy the full power without the dedicated adapter.

    • @LeRatVisseur
      @LeRatVisseur Před 2 měsíci +2

      I don’t think you can transfer 180 watt in the form of usb c at the moment
      Tb5 could have the potential for 240w, but it’s not for tomorrow

      @@LeRatVisseur thanks. but then Joshua critique at around 14minutes is really not accurate. if I heard him correctly, he implies the lack of TB4 prevents this from getting charged from the hub. but it wont get charged anyway even if it was thunderbolt. correct?

    • @LeRatVisseur
      @LeRatVisseur Před měsícem +3

      @@DanielRodriguez-fg5ll I am not 100% certain and this is to be confirmed
      Basically tb4 = intel and usb 4 = amd and have very similar functionalities
      USB 4 can only provide around 100w which is not enough for this laptop, so you need to have a dedicated cable to power the laptop (monitor and periphericals should work via a dock on the usb 4 port)
      Tb4 have higher transfer speeds than usb 4 but still cannot transfer more power (100w) than usb 4, so having tb4 on this laptop wouldn’t solve this problem ( since the laptop simply draw too much power for that type of connectivity)
      Tb5 could enable 240w of transfer
      I repeat that I am not very familiar with tb and usb 4 specifications, this was what I understood when I searched for a laptop about 2 years ago

    Seems a good mid-range to premium gaming laptop in the thinner and lighter sector. It is expensive. e.g. in the UK, it is £2400 for 32GB/1TB/R9/4070. Still cheaper than the M3 Pro MB Pro 14 with 36GB/1TB but closer than it has ever been at a £300 difference, and looking online you can get the MB with a £250 discount. Of course, if you are buying for gaming then the ASUS would be the best choice, but for pro users with no OS preference, I would still prefer the MB for its better battery life, lower fan noise, cooler running, better speakers, and has comparable performance and display.

    I was looking forward to upgrading from my older G14 to a 2024 model. Nope! The new look is hideous and the thermals are bad. The new third fan now runs continuously and it struggles to cool even a 4070. Decided to go for a 2023 model that was on disccount.

    You didn't mention the annoying, high pitched fan noise. is this an Ad or what?

    • @jvtechtea
      @jvtechtea  Před 2 měsíci +2

      Not an ad, I would have said so if it was. I honestly didn't really notice a high pitch. To my brain, it's just a loud fan and I'm used to that in any gaming PC. Probably didn't bother me because I often play with headphones or as part of a desktop rig that includes box speakers

    Honestly this year Rog phone and zephyrus laptop completely lost their identity. Now it's just some kind of MacBook clone. I really hope they'll make only USB charging (because power delivery supports 200W) next year. For now, I'll stay with my 2022 model

    - That LED stripe is LAME AF.
    - The soldered RAM (without ability to add RAM) is LAME AF
    - The DOWNGRADE ON GPU (and stagnant CPU option) is also LAME AF.
    - DOLLAR STORE MACBOOK LOOK IS LAME/CHEESE AF.
    - ARMOURY CRATE (of late) is LAME AF.
    THIS IS A DOWNGRADE AT A HIGHER PRICE! I'm saying this as a purchaser/user of the last last three iterations.

      I dig mine. I disable the slash lighting. Have the 4070 model. It is so much cooler and less noisy than the 2023 model. I’m not looking to power a ship to the moon. I want something comfortable. You’re lame.

    Bad performance for the price. Fans are loud.
    They could of easily kept the same thickness. But nope they need to make a worse laptop. Who even asked for a thinner laptop? NOBODY its a gaming laptop.

    It's very compact. I like it. Just got it. It's not as powerful for video editing like the MacBook Pro is. Well, the M3 Pro and Max are. It'll play games, I play Forza when I do play, don't always have time for it. I use it for work on the go and for mainly video editing. Just drop to 30fps and that'll chew through that, don't understand why it's dropping frames doing 4K60 videos.
