- The Apple Live Event happened and they announced a few new items like the new iPad air, iPad Pro, Apple Pencil, and Magic Keyboard. They look good so here is our thoughts.

To follow up my previous comment, I have some extra insight. I am the former owner of the M1 iPad Pro, the current owner of the M2 iPad Pro, and the future owner of the M4 iPad Pro with textured glass and the beefed up specs. The thing that people who are non-artists (in the drawing and painting sense) don’t realize is that when we learned to draw and paint with traditional media, we learned to use tools in different positions and motions to create different shapes and textures with the point of the brush. So for my upgrade from the M1 to the M2, it was because I needed the hover cursor to use my iPad as well as I can use photoshop on my laptop. It makes a huge difference in accuracy.
The current switch from M2 to M4 is really not so much about the chip itself, but the new Apple Pencil pro. Being able to rotate it like I would a piece of charcoal to get the sharp edge will make it so much more natural. The pinch to select tool will greatly help with efficiency. And, yes, I could have gotten the new iPad Air in order to get the Apple Pencil, but I actually occasionally hit the top of the performance end with my M2 when I’m doing animation and painting back and forth at the same time. So, I bit the bullet and got the 1TB M4. Can’t wait.

I guess you hit the top of ram (unified memory) with a lot of layers, so I wonder if upgrading to m4 will help. I'm skeptical, because it has the same amount of ram as other m series iPads. Other than ram amount, M1 is still a beast when it comes to performance
But I definitely agree with everything you said about pencil

Apple needs to make a Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro that has an Apple silicon processor. iPad when not in the Keyboard but Mac OS when docked into the keyboard. A better version of Samsung Dex
For me, I'm into animation and 3D sculpting. I have a Windows laptop for 3D animation (I actually upgraded the RAM and added 8 TB of storage for pretty cheap thanks to Black Friday). But I'm pretty excited for this newer iPad with keyboard and pencil. I have an underpowered 6th gen iPad with 1st gen Apple pencil... so this will be a huge upgrade if I decide to get one. Even though I like animation, sometimes I just want to draw and sculpt for fun. Plus this iPad screen will look great. I still want to see the iPad in person at the store first to see if I'm making the right choice in terms of size, and compare the nano texture and standard screen.

I do amateur youtube and I've been hemming and hawing about getting two 4K point and shoots for filming. Also separately I was debating about getting an iPad Mini for media consumption. I saw the iPad event and was blown away. I could get the iPad Pro, a used iPhone with a decent camera, and the iPad mini I wanted and have a THREE camera setup, in 4K then edit the videos on one of the "Cameras" for like $3000 usd. I was looking at two $1200 cameras. Like for $400 more I can get a drawning tablet and mini I wanted. I'm not an Apple guy but I've never felt so targeted lmao.

15:05 I think apple wants to allow slm small language models of ai to run locally because llms although they are fast are slow they can hallucinate and generative ai is kinda taboo because it’s been associated with stealing from artists
This video made me realize that they’re doing both specifically to capture both markets, just in case it goes further one way or another.

Can we have a touch first version of macOS on the iPad Pro ?
I think they also know the laptop is a legacy market to some extent, which is why they’re not going to remove certain ports from it.
Maybe who the iPad Pro is for, I feel like they couldn’t be further from what the original vision for the iPad was, a magic piece of glass; do everything appliance for everyone, removing the barrier of technology.
To be honest, the Pro just seems to be the result of a company trying to work out how to sell a more expensive version of an existing product.
I’m a huge fan of the iPad, but I’m starting to lose hope in its future.
I hear what you’re saying. For me my expectations of the iPad have actually devolved. I went from trying to use it as a computer, back to using it as a traditional iPad. I don’t know that I will ever buy another magic keyboard. In a way it feels freeing, not having to deal with expectations and disappointment. Within that context, it’s an amazing device.

I initially bought the M1 iPad Pro because I thought it would be ideal to use work on all the Logic Pro projects we get from clients when not at our studio without having to lug about my MacBook Pro. I quickly hit a barrier though as there was no way of installing any third party plugins which we and our clients use. I then thought, ok, I'll just use it as a regular tablet like to watch Netflix and CZcams videos but then came to realise that my Mac was always within hand's reach and found it easier to put my feet up, grab the Mac and put it on my lap. Call me lazy but it's way more comfy than having to hold on to a tablet while watching videos. So now it's by my bed and tells the time. I have to admit, the large screen does make it easier to read the time with it bright lovely display.

I just had the realization while watching a few minutes into the topic. Apples dream future is to replace macbooks entirely. Apple vision pro is supposed to be the "super computing" device as well as the phone replacement. Ipads are the mac replacement.
We aren't there yet. I wouldnt call it close enough to hold, but getting ever closer to touch.
Mac os served as many ppls entry point into the computing experience back in the day and its how apple came to power--the mac was apples identity. Then the iphone revolution came about and its now their identity. While macs were a great tool for creativity and entering the a digital age, we long passed that.
Looking ahead, does apple want to keep investing and building off a legacy device -- a device that is no longer the company's image/bread and butter. Or would they build a device that is powerful yet "simple". One far more inline and relatable to an experience their customers already know, love and enjoy.
I grew up with desktops and laptops long before phones and tablets, so i cant ever see a world where ipads replace a mac for me. But to kids born now or ppl who never really had personal computers growing up. Yeah i can see how a desktop os is just clunky and "outdated" compared to a phone os.
M4 ipad pro is no big whoop. Its faster to do nothing. But the message and the drive behind it, is to push the market into believing that ipads are the future and the doorway to creativity much in the same way mac os was in that 90s - '00s era
Like when I’m in my 80s and I can no longer handhold regular sized tablets I will get an iPad Mini.
The iIpad Air is heavier and that can’t be helped as the weight loss is due to the expensive display on the M4 iPad Pro
As a non-creator, I have to say these come across as a spec bump while leaving the limitations of iPad OS in place. The OS is the limiting factor. I consume content on my iPad when I am commuting or waiting for an activity. All my iPads are pre-M1. I don't see anything here that makes me say: Yes! I must upgrade. I don't need more processing power then the A-Series chip in iPad Air. My iPad 3 and 10th gen work fin for video conferencing and Skype. I don't use them to edit photos or compose videos.
I have finally decided to get an 11-inch iPad Air with 1TB of storage. Previously, I planned on getting an iPad Pro because only the iPad Pro models then had more than 256 GB of memory.
My current iPad Pro is an 8-year-old 10.5 inch with 256 GB of memory so the model I plan to get has three improvements:
1) faster chip
2) bigger display
3) four times the memory
Of course, if money were no object, I would get the new iPad Pro but with limited financial resources the one I chose represents the best value for money that suits my needs.
Of course, the marginal increase in performance with the M4 iPad Pro is substantial, but to me simply doesn’t justify the marginal increase in price after doing a cost benefit analysis. The marginal gain in utility for what I mostly use my iPad for - editing videos using iMovies - doesn’t justify the marginal cost.
As a matter of fact, to keep costs down, I’m not getting the cellular feature not the pencil nor keyboard.
Apple Watch is for fitness and health, iPad (and pencil) is for artists.
Apple has to thread carefully to avoid mutilation of their products although they also have to see how technology is heading. I think Laptops are transforming into pads. Just imagine having a powerful screen you can attach o a keyboard when needed. I see no need for the mackbookpro

Different versions of the same M4 chips.
Not enough artists and content creators rich enough to support it if they aren't starving.
Steve Jobs would simplify it to three-tiers and rhe Pencil just like he did upon returning to Apple to right the ship.

Hmmm… so afaik apple made a pen input on screen device already in the 90s. Was called newton. Secondly - afaik apple invented the tablet with the iPad. Thirdly - apple invented the personal computer with the apple I. Fourthly - apple invented the smartphone with the iPhone. Fifthly (does that exist), apple invented the mouse. And apple invented windows. But yes - then they took their time to bring the pen back as input devices. Rightfully though because it was - other than Wacom - the first time it actually worked.
We need more powerful 5G not crippled 5G ,so we don’t need iPad optimized for their maximum profits !
I’ve been saying this for years. Now they need to make a 14inch model and trim down some specs to make it affordable. I thought that they would do it for sure this years since we got the dreams animation app. The next set of iPads NEED to have a larger display. Dreams and procreate are becoming cluttered, 14in is the sweet spot.

Apple has missed the mark SO badly… How many total iPad users are professional content creators? Maybe a couple hundred thousand around the US and maybe a million world wide??? Verses 100Million+ iPad users. Building a product so tightly focused is a huge fail, unless you do it as an offshoot of your main product line. Way overpriced and high dollar accessories??? Apple is just trying to make bank before the economy drops and there are no sales. The average person uses to the iPad as an augmentation of the MacBook for easy portability. Hummmm, like me think for a second, Macbook Air 15 for $1,500 with 16GB ram and 512GB SSD or a new iPad Pro 13 for over $2.5K by the time you add the new pencil and magic keyboard? And you can’t use the new pencil or keyboard with the iPad Air or use the old gen 2 pencil, which I just bought about 8 months ago??? Who is the stupid decision maker at Apple and why are you guys supporting this nonsense? None of these changes help the average Joe, only the high dollar artsy fartsy user. All pencils should work with all iPad and all keyboard should work with every device with the same pinout/position.

These guys are sounding like sheep giving Apple way too much credit ! The moved the camera , wow. Was ridiculous they didn't do it sooner . Also to keep talking about how Apple gets it pertaining to making the iPad more like a MacBook leaving out that without a huge update to iPad os18 it's just a spec bump is ridiculous. Without a needed update you paid more for a spec bump that's still far from MacBook. Along with not even mentioning you need the 1 TB version to even get the full power of its usage . This was pretty amateur but wish them well
I saw on another channel reviewing these new iPads & accessories, the CZcamsr making this same point. He said that like later this year, during the WWDC, Apple will likely preview upgrades to all its OS’s which will then (again, likely) be released in the fall of this year. So, it seems like it would make sense to wait to buy any of the new iPads until then.
I’m guessing Apple wanted to have an event that centered on the physical changes to the iPad (and its accessories), which aren’t insignificant. This also would make the upcoming WWDC a bit less hectic. I’d think they’d want to wait until the OS upgrades were released to release the new iPads. But if they’d done that, instead of people pointing out the “new hardware using old software” there’d be a different group of people shouting “Why announce these now without releasing them!?!?”

If Apple wasn’t concerned about with competing with its own products and opened up compatibility with iPad they have always intentionally neutered, it would be the best tablet by such a margin. They never would tho…

If you want a glorified ipad to take notes, watch media, study, read, an ipad 10/9th gen is MORE THAN ENOUGH. PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. you can buy a laptop for your editing purposes. To graphic designers, artists... only they should consider buying these advanced ipads.
