Well put William. I've ordered the new 11" iPad Pro 256GB WiFi only. Apple giving me £365 for my "old" M1 11".
Apple is so clever at giving you just enough in trade-in to make the price seem more manageable. I do not know how they did it. That's what I was offered too -- I think, it was £300-and-something, but I looked away before I got too tempted -- but I wish they'd let me trade in the Magic Keyboard as well.
How many people think of an iPad as a television replacement? I have a number of large 4K and 8K flatscreens. But more and more I use my 11 inch iPad Air and AirPlay the sound to my HomePods. So… I’d love to see an iPad Air from 15 to 17 inches, but with the same thickness as the new M4 iPad Pros. If the new pros also came in these sizes, they could be a serious alternative to Wacom.
I had an old 12.9-inch iPad Pro on my wall for a time as a kind of dashboard and I would often think how handy it would be to show TV on there. I might even do it, except the reason it's no longer on the wall is the same reason it went up there in the first place: it became faulty and unusable. Now it's even more faulty and unusable. Not sure I can convince myself to spend the money to buy another one just to put up there, but I'd really like it. I'd feel like I was back in BBC newsrooms where we were surrounded by monitors all day. I'd forgotten that, thanks.
I'm still completely satisfied with my iPad Pro M2 with Magic Keyboard. No upgrade needed by me.
I keep repeating to myself that I'm happy with my M1 iPad Pro and Magic Keyboard. I am. I am. Yes. I am. Definitely. Definitely.

I have received my new M4 iPad Pro 13 with 1 TB storage and 16 GB RAM. You won’t believe how fast this tiny machine is ….i played 300 Bullet chess games ( 1 min time limit ) and I have gained most of my Bullet chess ratings today. I used to loose a lot due to my old iPad as well as fast mini PC were so slow. But this beast oh gosh I won’t be going out clubbing in central London anymore hehe so there you go as promised I have given you my review 🙏🌹👌💐👍

Great video! Two things that stood out to me: 1) Always opt for the most expensive device you can afford as it should last a very long time if it is looked after. I remember when the M1 iPad Pro was first released a lot of tech reviewers were wondering why anyone would need so much power in an iPad and were advising that people buy the lower spec iPads. So glad I ignored that advice as I have had my M1 iPad Pro for 3 years now and it is as fast as the day I bought it, and I expect to be using it for many years to come. 2) We have lives in addition to writing. This is why I love the iPad, it is so versatile; what other device can you use as an ebook reader, gaming machine, laptop, desktop, note taker, drawing device, watching videos, etc. I can see why your colleague Wes is so smitten with the iPad.
That is a very good point about the most you can afford. It can get very, very costly, but I don't think I've ever regretted it -- and I have definitely been glad. Mind you, you know Wes has gone for the absolute top of the range iPad Pro? It's really the 13-inch iPad Air that I fancy. But we'll hear on the next AppleInsider podcast what he thinks about it once he's got his.
@@WilliamGallagher Just finished listening to the latest episode of AppleInsider and I am rather envious of Wes’s purchase! I would be tempted myself, but cannot really justify the upgrade. I would also stick with the 11 inch version as that is just the perfect size iPad in my opinion and if you need a bigger screen, just plug one in! All the best.

This was perfect! As soon as I saw the announcement yesterday from Apple, my 'plans, hopes, and dreams' were this is what you would do today. I did not have to get 'lost in the details' because you have done that all for me. Thank you. Now I can get on with the rest of my day, knowing I don't have to buy an iPad Pro with a M4 chip.

Bought a sec-gen iPad Pro 11" (2020), pencil and smart keyboard case off eBay about a year ago and very happy with it. It's not lightning fast and battery so-so but for Scrivener and Zotero it's just fine! Will upgrade in a couple of years but not sure whether to go new and downgrade to Air or used-pro. Will see. Nice vid!

As I age, and my vision degrades, my main criteria is whether I can adequately read the screen.
I wish I didn't know precisely what you mean. But at least we can pinch out to increase the size of most things, rather than holding the iPad next to our noses.

That's interesting: my wife used to always buy the cellular one and I never have. Ultimately she's stopped because she just wasn't using it enough and on occasion she'll tether to her iPhone like I do with mine. Would you mind letting me know what you think of your new iPad Air when you get it? I'd be curious to know if you can feel the difference between it and that old model.
Buy any model ipad or even get a 2nd hand one, they all have more processing power than you need for writing & research etc. I feel the most important thing to focus on is seating > keyboard > software > lighting. If you write, then an apple pencil is also pretty nice :D
I hadn't thought of lighting, but otherwise yes, that's what I think. Still, a new iPad lasts longer and we get to use it for more than solely writing. Although why I would want to do anything but write, I do not know.
Indeed, place look at the storage options! Impossible to upgrade later! Good video with some good valid points like the complexity on the Pencils….I still use and typ this on my 2018 iPad pro 2018 with 1 TB of storage, still this thing feels after 6 years speedy and comfortable (even without the Apple or any other external keyboard).
The ONLY way Apple can force me to buy the recent model is that future versions of IOS will no longer support my CPU (A12X)…until that time comes, I will use my device until the last day or when it really starts to fail on battery….Good video William! 😊👍
Thank you. I like how iPads last for an incredibly long time; I loaned a 10-year-old iPad Air to someone recently and it would still be perfectly usable, if they hadn't broken it on me.
Strangely enough I do prefer my MacBook air M3 when it comes to pure writing.
But then I do miss the fluidity of the iPad interface and the touch screen with pencil.
Earlier today I had to mark up a PDF and for the first time ages, easily two years, I tried it on the iPad with an Apple Pencil and actually enjoyed it.

Thanks for the video. One point though: the old iPad 12.9” is 2732 x 2048 at 264 ppi giving 12.9 inch diagonal while the new iPad 13” M4 is 2752 x 2064 at 264 ppi giving 13 inch diagonal. So at least for the larger model, Apple indeed increased the screen size from 12.9” to 13”.

It did always bother me that "12.9" was so close to 13 that I couldn't see why they didn't bother, but I presumed it was something to do with pixel sizes and aspect ratios and things I don't know. But apparently -- I believe anyway -- the 13-inch iPad screen is really 12.9-inches. My head may explode soon.
Lots to drool over here but still won’t run a full version of Scrivener (IPadOS needs to change fundamentally) nor will it play nicely with dictation. Still I made the same decision: an iPad Pro and… l’ve never regretted it one little bit.
Oddly, I'm happy with the Scrivener version that's on iPad, even though I know it is cut down from the Mac one. It seems to me that the visible difference is in the end parts when you compile your text into different formats and actually, I think by going back to basics, the iPad version is even better than the Mac for that bit.
Thank you for this. I am loving my ipad pro 12.9 from 2021, but still I am also intrigued by the new one and the possibility of a trade-in. I edit 4k-video with Lumafusion and the m1 does struggle when I use more than 3 feeds.
You mentioned Android tablets, and I reckon most of them are vastly inferior to the ipad, but what about the galaxy tab s9 ultra? That screen is 14 inches! And a pen is included in the box.
My problem with Android is Android. I've seen some nice hardware, well-designed and well-built phones if not tablets, but it's always clunky on the inside. I realise that's just personal preference, but it's why I'll never be talked into an Android tablet because I know no matter how good it is, it will be this at heart. I'm interested that you use LumaFusion: I've edited video in it on my M1 iPad Pro and it was very good, but I wasn't doing anything remotely as much as you.
There are indeed more technical number-crunching assessments of these new Apple products, but - like many people, I'm thinking - the only reaction I really wanted to hear was yours.

I have a second-generation, 11-inch iPad that works very well for me. I feel no need to upgrade. The only thing I don’t like is that sometimes Scrivener on the iPad doesn’t sync well with projects that I’m also working on on my computer. It hasn’t been practical for me to switch back and forth from the computer to the iPad. I suppose if I were working on one project on my Mac and another on the iPad, I might be okay, but I really don’t work like that. I have found that I do just fine with the Pages app and can switch back and forth between the Mac and the iPad in Pages.
I’ve never felt a need for a larger screen. For one thing, when I was considering the 13-inch iPad, I read that it can be a little “bendy.” That worried me a little. With the new, thinner 11-inch iPad, I worry that might become a problem with that size, too. I would be interested to know, should you get your hands on one, if the new 11-inch feels as rugged as previous models.

Thank you. I'm concerned about Scrivener: I haven't noticed any problems but I suppose lately I've been writing almost exclusively in the Mac version. Have you asked the makers -- Literature and Latte, what a great name -- about it?
@@WilliamGallagher I haven't contacted Literature and Latte. (You're right: great name.) I mostly work on the Mac, too, so it's not a big concern if Scrivener doesn't want to sync well on the iPad. The iPad is handy for jotting quick notes in Pages when I get a new story idea but am not at my computer. That's mostly what I use it for, in terms of writing.
My wife and I watched Arrival tonight, and we mentioned you. I told her the story of your friend who persuaded you to see it in the theatre, and you didn't really want to go, but it turned out to be Arrival and you loved it. I told her you watch it every New Years Eve. At midnight, right? I'm thinking we should watch it then, too. But to watch it with you, we'd have to start it at 4:00 pm. (Pacific Time.) I guess that would work.

I would wait until WWDC next month to know what the new AI operating system will do and see if their are differences between the iPad Air or the iPad Pro (M4) or if weight is a consideration then iPad Pro and the New Magic Keyboard make the whole thing lighter than last years iPad Pro (M2) ALSO if you get the pencil you can edit your work easily.
That is a very good point. I was with you until that bit about the Pencil, mind, as my handwriting is so appalling that even little scribbles I make on documents are simply pathetic. My Mac just autocorrected "simply" into "silly". I think it knows me well.
I bought my iPad Pro 9.7" in 2016 when it was released, along with an Apple Pencil. I use this lots however it is time to replace. I will be getting the new iPad Pro 11" as I think that my old one will soon be declared end of line, and its battery doesn't last long either.
Why the Pro - I don't exactly do £d or video editing on it? Because it will hopefully last me eight years
I will buy the Logitech case to save a few £s and the cheapest Pencil that will work with it too for more saving money.
Yes! Pro ones last longer, absolutely. Once you get beyond the pain of paying all that cash, I think they are worth it over the long run.
@@WilliamGallagher Unfortunately Apple don't seem to offer an academic discount in the new iPad Pro so either wait for a return to school offer, or order via Costco for a £50 discount!
Fun fact, the 2024 version iPad Pro models are lighter than their corresponding 2024 iPad Air counterparts. Makes you question why they still call it an iPad Air.

That’s Apple for you don’t offer enough except for extortionate prices, and for me I currently enjoy using the iPad Pro 12 inch M1 however it has been 4 years, and the M1 is slowly starting to degrade due to the battery i may and i might buy the new version with iPad Pro 13’inch with M4 but that all depends on my budget.
You could get Apple to replace the battery in your iPad. I don't know how much it costs but I understand they'll do it so long as the machine isn't so old that they no longer have the batteries.
@@WilliamGallagher it is a iPad Pro M1 from January 2021, four years on and usually Apple tends to refund the money back to you as I gather. But if I do go down this route I’ll ask for screen repair and battery replacement and I would have two iPads lol.

@@aglez6370 writing on digital screen is noticeably better, the font is much clearer and better for free form long form writing, I would recommend new 13inch with OLED, good luck to your search.
I have finally decided to get an 11-inch iPad Air with 1TB of storage. Previously, I planned on getting an iPad Pro because only the iPad Pro models then had more than 256 GB of memory.
My current iPad Pro is an 8-year-old 10.5 inch with 256 GB of memory so the model I plan to get has three improvements:
1) faster chip
2) bigger display
3) four times the memory
Of course, if money were no object, I would get the new iPad Pro but with limited financial resources the one I chose represents the best value for money that suits my needs.
Of course, the marginal increase in performance with the M4 iPad Pro is substantial, but to me simply doesn’t justify the marginal increase in price after doing a cost benefit analysis. The marginal gain in utility for what I mostly use my iPad for - editing videos using iMovies - doesn’t justify the marginal cost.
As a matter of fact, to keep costs down, I’m not getting the cellular feature not the pencil nor keyboard.

Do you prefer writing on a Mac or iPad?
Oh, that is a hard one. Since I bought a MacBook Pro that I can carry with me to most places, I think I'd have to say the Mac. But if I'm away, or I'm running a workshop, then the fact that I can have that iPad flat on the desk instead of putting a barrier between me and the participants, that's very appealing. And that when they're gone, when we're done, I can just carry on writing whatever I started on the Mac, it is fantastic. I wouldn't like you to take either away from me. But I do think that having the MacBook Pro is the key reason why I won't be buying one of the new iPads. Well, I say that now. Ask me in an hour and it might be different. But speaking of asking, may I ask you? Do you write on both and have a preference?

Until they make ipadOS more Mac like, pro makes no real sense. iPad mini - it’s a tablet ideal for writing on and consuming media. I can share stuff between my Mac.
I do keep fancying macOS on an iPad, but then I also like iPadOS -- and yet I think a way to switch between them, as is often suggested, would make for the worst of both worlds.

Seriously though, they just need a lite version of MacOS, I’ve tried to use my work ipadPro for work as a primary device and I fail every time… so end up carrying that and a laptop.
If, or until, it's possible to run Mac OS on an iPad it will, as far as I'm concerned, be a very inferior writing machine. I rarely use mine for writing, even though I have the Magic Keyboard. iPad OS simply doesn't cut it for me. The hardware is marvellous; the software is meh.
I like the software more than you, but macOS on an iPad would be so good, you're right.
NANO TEXTURE SCREEN... Note that it is only avaialble if you get the 1TB or 2 TB iPad Pro (so that is an additional $600 / $800 from the base model + an additional $100 to select the Nano Textrure) So $700 / $900 to have no reflection or $50 to get Paperlike Screen Protector. ALSO you need to use the special Apple Cloth to clean the screen. Othereise it might damage the screen.
Yes, I should have said that about the specific models it's available on. I've been hearing that it's a coating rather than an etching -- I'm really not sure yet -- which might make a difference about the microfibre cloth you can use. I've never been that fussed about glare on the screen so I doubt I'd go for that version anyway, but I'd like to know more.

I have Paperlike on my iPad. Love it. I see no need to pay for a nano-etched glass screen when Paperlike is so affordable.
You can’t lay/sit awkwardly with an iPad and type well without it flopping over awkwardly. The MacBook Air, on the other hand, won’t flop. Longer lasting battery as well…
I have typed on my MacBook Pro lying down with it on my chest. It was a terrible, terrible mistake.

The new pencil has the magnetic charing in a different place due to the iPad Screen Camera being moved. So it only works with the New iPad Air and M4 Pro since they have the new camera placement.
You beat me to it. Yes. Maybe it's because I'm not a big Apple Pencil user, but I was okay with this change and it only working with the new iPads. I do like that thing where you squeeze the Pencil and an arc of controls appears on the iPad screen though.
Instead of everyone participating in the deception called "iPad Pro," it would be better for all to acknowledge the truth: Apple has been selling the iPad Pro without suitable software for years! It's a fantastic phenomenon how users are mesmerized by the design and performance of something that cannot be utilized in professional work and tasks! Yes, in professional work, why else would someone pay $3,000 (including Magic Keyboard, Mouse, Apple Pencil, Apple Care) only to use it to read newspapers on the couch or play a couple of games and then revert to using a MacBook Air (which costs $1,200-$1,300) to continue their work?! Even video or photo editing does not function properly (lacking plugins, missing features, no complete export capability from Capture One to Photoshop, etc.). I mean, who exactly are you fooling for five whole years?! Selling a children’s toy with iPhone software at the price of a MacBook Pro and recording who buys it to sort who is foolish and who is wise?! Is this what the infamous "iPad Pro" project is about?! THERE IS NO SOFTWARE FOR THE iPAD PRO, PERIOD! No one has ever managed to utilize even the performance of the "M1" chip, and now they're introducing an "M4", APPLE SOFTWARE, software, not hardware!
I do think Logic Pro for the iPad is amazing, but I'd struggle to find anything more than that - or at least that I would use. Final Cut Pro is pretty close but doesn't feel as there yet as Logic Pro to me.
