  • I've had some requests for a Mopar revival on the channel so I picked up the cheapest vehicle I could find on an estate auction. Let's see if this 1977 Dodge Monaco 2 door with a 360 V8 engine will run after sitting since 1989!

Congrats on doing a Mopar! A couple things: Always check the fluid on a Torqueflite with it running in neutral. The pump doesn't pump in park. The AC compressor looks like a York but it's a Chrysler-built RV-2. I think that's a Holley 2245 carb. Lucky it didn't have Lean-Burn...they definitely had it by '77 but not in everything. Mopars are a little different...people tend to be scared of them for some reason.

Take ten feet of yellow ski rope lower the piston to bottom of cylinder put as much of the rope in the cylinder as you can get then rotate piston until you lock the engine you can remove the spring on the valve and rotate valve or hook a pair of vice gripes to it and move up and down I have replaced broken springs between races before

Just a tip....but always pull the sparkplugs in an old engine and put some type of oil in the cylinders for a day or two before turning over. Marvel mystery oil works well. Just dry cranking it like that is a sure way to break a ring for no reason. After that...spin it over without plugs in it to get some oil pressure up.

@@richardbates2367 Cool, that is what mine was. Dark metallic green with velour seats. All green. I don't think mine had a 727 torcflight. I think it was a 904. At that time I had a 73 dodge pickup. D100. I ended up pulling of the 2bbl off the truck which had a 318 too. Then putting that carb on the fury and the fury carb on the truck. I rebuilt them both. The truck carb worked well on the fury and the truck wasn't as picky as the fury so worked out good for me. When I got that fury in 1991 it still had the fuel restrictor on it mounted off the alternator between the fuel pump and carb. Then it had the fuel wasting light on the left marker light. It had a white vinyl top. It had those noisy overload springs. Must have been a towing package. It had maybe just under 100k. Good car. I had it until 99 and someone stole it. Never saw it again. Thanks your reply took me back in time.

Chrysler products from the mid-70's. Barfsville! And that pile only stayed on the road for 12 years. Mid-70's was when I learned to drive, but I have no fond memories of those smogged, carburated beasts. Had a '79 Aspen that ran like garbage at only 20K miles and the interior was falling apart too. Was nice to hear the old Mopar starter sound though.
P.S. - Mortske could be a mechanic in Cuba. He can get almost anything to run.

Keep going through it. You've gone this far, and you are so close. You don't see those cars every day, so it's worth fixing. I enjoy seeing you fix vehicles that are less common, or that I don't know anything about. You do a very good job of explaining things, and I enjoy learning about cars I have never seen before, like this one. I'm a 100% self taught mechanic, and unfortunately there are certain things that I have not been able to teach myself thus far. I just learned through trial and error working at a junkyard. I successfully revived 11 classic cars working there, and we were able to resell them. So I like I said, I enjoy seeing some of your more challenging revivals, because I seem to learn a lot from them. I would love to see you do some dedicated videos explaining how certain parts work, and how to properly rebuild, diagnose, and/or tune them. It would be invaluable to me. But anyway, this is a beautiful car, and i would like to see it run again with the original drivetrain. When I am working on something, I keep it original unless I have to change it.

Sir I like your work ethic and the fact that you don't use colorful words. I'm a mechanic myself and I've brought many old cars back to life. Mopars can be cantankerous when they want to be. The firing order is similar to GM'S Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile and Pontiac V8's. The initial ignition timing must be set to TDC otherwise the engine can run hot. As you found out the valves are non adjustable. A complete rebuild is probably your best bet here. Anyway keep up the gr8 work you and Duff.
