Still in 2022 the Roland MV-8800 is a great unit and people are still wanting these beautiful machines.
Remember that the MV was released in 2007 so it's already an 'old' one.
Before buying one on the 2nd hand market I advise you to do this test.
Of course it's important how it looks but much better is to check if all functions are working properly.
Luckily you can put the MV into TEST MODE by pressing and holding MENU + F3 and turning the unit on.
Now you get a list of test functions, like memory test, drive test, button/slider/knobs/pad test and much more.
In this short video I show you some tests to get an idea.
I recommend doing this before buying and also if you already have a unit to make sure all is working properly.

I have one of these w/OP-1 expander.. it’s been collecting dust for many years. You have me dusting it off and desire is returning. It is wonderful! Thanks for reminding me!! You are awesome.
Wow! You've got the complete package!
That diamond is meant to shine so great to know it is dusted off now.
Enjoy it.
Thank You!
A pleasure :D :D Thank you too!
Excellent Rogier, most helpful. :-)
Just to prevent people from buying rubbish ;-)
Or also to test your own gear to see what's wrong.
@@theMIDImaniac however if the unit u are trying to buy is it at a distance from u , like in another country , is there anything u would ask the seller to show u like in a picture ( photo), or video ? ... like if the item is on reverb for exemple ... and any other tips or precautions you'd recomend Roger ? / THX
Good Video 👍 ... and by the way ... i do not comment much , (sorry for that (lack of time ) ) hoewer the Steam 7 and 8 where the dopest dope :-p ... Love them 👍
@@nekoninjakekoninj3529 good question!
1st. Ask for possibility to return unit in case of malfunctioning.
2nd. Ask for video of test mode - pads/A/D/buttons and Memory.
3rd. Ask an audio example of sampling and reproducing.
These are basic and important points.
A seller needs to share this info with an interested buyer.
thanks man
Done with pleasure! ✌🏽🙌🏽
Just purchased one. I will be doing this test, & hopefully it's not trash.
how is it?
🔥💪🏽
BUT ... what if I got it fourth hand ??? Perfect as always, Rogier!
Then you're screwed hahahaha
I have a 8800 unit that was functional prior to upgrading to v1.01. It hangs prior to the Roland splash screen and won’t completly boot. Any ideas?
Olá! Como eu poderia resolver um problema nos pads 1, 2, 5 estão falhando (sensibilidade)? o botão “roll” também não está funcionando. Pode ajudar?
Um forte abraço.
does the midi test suppose to say ok on midi in and midi out ? thanks . mine doesnt
Hi Roger! Sorry but this is totally out of topic since it’s an sp 808 question. I have an mpc one as my main workhorse but would love to use the unique effects of the 808. I hooked up the mpc output into the 808’s . Im planning on connecting BACK the 808 into the mpc by running an rca cable from the 808’s AUX OUT into the MPC’s INPUT. Is that right way to do it? Need your expertise please! Thanks Midi Maniac!👍
¿¡IF you plan to record or sample anything this way!? ¡¡be warned, you’ll very likely get a feedback loop that will very possibly damage your ears!! Keep in mind that when you go to record anything, you’re recording what’s at the input, and so if you record an input on your MPC say? Just be sure that wherever the MPC’s outputs are routed to might just be plugged right back into the input of the same device that you’re sampling. Probably if I try to make a sort of chart to aid my explanation:
(Mixer)->out-->to input of (MPC)->beware of this output, very likely plugged back into mixer, so mute the channel that your MPC is plugged into!
Mixers often have a seperate output for a sampler, or else the headphone output, so that you can cue up sounds and listen and mix what you wouldn’t want the audience to hear. As long as you are recording then the sound will be coming from your source, so no need to play it straight through from the device your recording to since it would be two sources blasting the same thing. I guess the more appropriate way to put it would be like this; keep the recording volume level up and the sampler’s output volume temporarily silent while recording or sampling. Then turn the sampler’s level back up again once you’re finished sampling. By now you’ve probably figured all this out, hopefully this helps someone. Good luck and stay with it! Keep the SP and MPC alive, great hardware!
Hi. I haven't used my MV8000 in years, but I'm thinking about dusting it off. It's a great machine and I should gig deeper with it. One bug that had always baffled me is that quite often when turning the unit on, there is no sound. And by navigating to the system menu, I can see that the main outputs are not selected, but instead, the square is selecting what might be another output that I don't have installed. The square is blank, and frozen in place, I can't move it to the main outputs. I can only get around it by power off, and it can take several boot ups to get it back to the main outputs. Have you ever come across this bug before?
Mine does that, it's annoying. It selects an unused output every time it's booted, you just have to manually select the output you want when you turn it on. I've not come across a setting to change this, however it may be buried in the settings somewhere, where you find default settings like sync and ram and settings like that
😎🤘😎🤘😎🤘
hi thank you very much for the good information
I just tested it, but all of the device auto check items say ok, but ps/2 says NG. Do you know why this is? what is ps/2? I really want to know
Hi!
PS/2 means the mouse connector. Apparently there’s no mouse connected.
Once connected the message will be ‘good’.
🙌🏽🤙🏽
Try it again with a mouse plugged in, and it will say Ok
Do you have the .stl file for the screen angle module Rogier? Is it on thingverse?
Hi!
Unfortunately I didn’t make an stl file.
Eventually I made the screen lift manually with acrylic plate.
Was very easy to do and then the screen became incredible visible.
@@theMIDImaniac thanks! It's a great idea, the screen is difficult to view a lot of the time. Like the MPC2xl would be the perfect solution, with a couple angles to choose from. btw if I find a replacement screen P/N for the MV8000 I will share it with you.
@@robinsutcliffe-video_art another unfortunate part…I don’t own the MV anymore.
Has to sell it last year due to paying bills😅
@@theMIDImaniac Shame - still, it's the best place to share it to get it to other users : )
